Electric fields can transform materials with respect to their structure and properties, enabling various applications ranging from batteries to spintronics. Recently electrolytic gating, which can generate large electric fields and voltage-driven ion transfer, has been identified as a powerful means to achieve electric-field-controlled phase transformations. The class of transition metal oxides (TMOs) provide many potential candidates that present a strong response under electrolytic gating. However, very few show a reversible structural transformation at room-temperature. Here, we report the realization of a digitally synthesized TMO that shows a reversible, electric-field-controlled transformation between distinct crystalline phases at room-temperature. In superlattices comprised of alternating one-unit-cell of SrIrO3 and La0.2Sr0.8MnO3, we find a reversible phase transformation with a 7% lattice change and dramatic modulation in chemical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties, mediated by the reversible transfer of oxygen and hydrogen ions. Strikingly, this phase transformation is absent in the constituent oxides, solid solutions and larger period superlattices. Our findings open up a new class of materials for voltage-controlled functionality.
Efficient manipulation of magnetic materials is essential for spintronics. In spin-current generator/magnet bilayers, the efficiency of spin-orbit torques per magnetic layer thickness scales inversely with the magnetic layer thickness, leading to considerable power increase in applications with large magnetic layer thickness. Here, we develop a 3D spin-orbit material scheme in which the spin torque efficiency can be remarkably boosted up by stacking [spin-current generator/magnet/oxide]n superlattices, with the oxide layers breaking the inversion symmetry. In contrast, the spin torque diminish…
We report on the growth and properties of high quality bicolor oxide superlattices, composed of two perovskites out of BaTiO3, CaTiO3, and SrTiO3. The artificially grown superlattices are structurally unique and have a macroscopically homogeneous phase, which is not feasible to recreate in bulk form. By artificial structuring, it is found that the polarization of such superlattices can be highly increased as compared to pseudo-binary ceramics with the same overall composition. Such strong enhancement in superlattice is attributed to newly-developed ionic motions of A-site cations at the hetero…
Oxide heterostructures exhibit many intriguing properties. Here we provide design principles for inducing multiple topological states in (001) ($AM$O$_3$)$_1$/($AM'$O$_3$)$_1$ oxide superlattices. Aided by first-principles calculations and model analysis, we show that a (Sr$M$O3)$_1$/(Sr$M'$O$_3$)$_1$ superlattice ($M$ = Nb, Ta and $M'$ = Rh, Ir) is a strong topological insulator with $Z_2$ index (1;001). More remarkably, a (SrMoO3)$_1$/(SrIrO3)$_1$ superlattice exhibits multiple coexisting topological insulator (TI) and topological Dirac semi-metal (TDS) states. The TDS state has a pair of ty…
Resonant tunnelling is a quantum mechanical process that has long been attracting both scientific and technological attention owing to its intriguing underlying physics and unique applications for high-speed electronics. The materials system exhibiting resonant tunnelling, however, has been largely limited to the conventional semiconductors, partially due to their excellent crystalline quality. Here we show that a deliberately designed transition metal oxide superlattice exhibits a resonant tunnelling behaviour with a clear negative differential resistance. The tunnelling occurred through an a…
Transport and magnetoresistance measurements are performed on metallic, high-carrier density YTiO3-CaTiO3 superlattices as a probe towards the investigation of an emergent magnetic order of YTiO3. On varying the thickness of YTiO3 while keeping the CaTiO3 layer thickness constant in the superlattices, a low-temperature upturn in sheet-resistance, a non-Fermi liquid-like charge transport and positive magnetoresistance are observed. Analyses of the origin of such effects suggest that a unique antiferromagnetic order is realized in the ultra-thin, epitaxially strained YTiO3 layers, which corrobor…
In this review, we propose a summary of the most recent advances in the first-principles study of ferroelectric oxide epitaxial thin films and multilayers. We discuss in detail the key roles of mechanical and electrical boundary conditions, providing to the reader the basic background for a simple and intuitive understanding of the evolution of the ferroelectric properties in many nanostructures. Going further we also highlight promising new avenues and future challenges within this exciting field or researches.
We construct ferroelectric (LuFeO3)m/(LuFe2O4) superlattices with varying index m to study the effect of confinement on topological defects. We observe a thickness-dependent transition from neutral to charged domain walls and the emergence of fractional vortices. In thin LuFeO3 layers, the volume fraction of domain walls grows, lowering the symmetry from P63cm to P3c1 before reaching the non-polar P63/mmc state, analogous to the high-temperature ferroelectric to paraelectric transition. Our study shows how dimensional confinement stabilizes textures beyond those in bulk ferroelectric systems.

We study the transport properties in SrVO3/LaVO3 (SVO/LVO) superlattices deposited on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. We show that the electronic conduction occurs in the metallic LVO layers with a galvanomagnetism typical of a 2D Fermi surface. In addition, a Kondo-like component appears in both the thermal variation of resistivity and the magnetoresistance. Surprisingly, in this system where the STO interface does not contribute to the measured conduction, the Kondo correction is strongly anisotropic. We show that the growth temperature allows a direct control of this contribution. Finally, the key…
We study the equilibrium arrangements of polarization vortices in (PbTiO$_3$)$_n$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices by means of second-principles simulations. We find that, at low temperatures, polarization vortices organize in a regular arrangement in which clockwise and counter-clockwise vortices alternate positions, leading to a crystal-like structure with well defined handedness. This chiral crystal melts at a critical temperature $T_\mathrm{M}$ into a chiral liquid, where long-range order is lost but handedness is preserved. At even higher temperatures, $T_\mathrm{C}$, a second phase transiti…
We investigate the structural, electronic, transport, and thermoelectric properties of LaNiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3(001)$ superlattices containing either exclusively $n$- or $p$-type interfaces or coupled interfaces of opposite polarity by using density functional theory calculations with an on-site Coulomb repulsion term. The results show that significant octahedral tilts are induced in the SrTiO$_3$ part of the superlattice. Moreover, the La-Sr distances and Ni-O out-of-plane bond lengths at the interfaces exhibit a distinct variation by about $7\,\%$ with the sign of the electrostatic doping. In cont…
Here, we present the theoretical analysis of the structural and electronic degrees of freedom of two different oxide/fluoride perovskite superlattices, KTaO$_3$/KZnF$_3$ and KTaO$_3$/KNiF$_3$. Using first-principles calculations, we found the appearance of a two-dimensional electron, 2DEG, and hole, 2DHG, gases as a function of the number of layers of the different pristine materials. We demonstrate that the phonon-dynamics at the KTO/K$M$F superlattices play a crucial role in the appearance of these effects. Additionally, our results reveal a rather sizeable Rashba-type spin-splitting at thes…
Interfaces between correlated complex oxides are promising avenues to realize new forms of magnetism that arise as a result of charge transfer, proximity effects and locally broken symmetries. We report upon the discovery of a non-collinear magnetic structure in superlattices of the ferromagnetic metallic oxide La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and the correlated metal LaNiO3 (LNO). The exchange interaction between LSMO layers is mediated by the intervening LNO, such that the angle between the magnetization of neighboring LSMO layers varies in an oscillatory manner with the thickness of the LNO layer. The…
Oxide superlattices and microstructures hold the promise for creating a new class of devices with unprecedented functionalities. Density-functional studies of the recently fabricated superlattices of lattice-matched perovskite titanates (SrTiO3)n/(LaTiO3)m reveal a classic wedge-shaped potential originating from the Coulomb potential of a charged sheet of La atoms. The potential in turn confines the electrons in the vicinity of the sheet, leading to an Airy-function localization of the electron states. Magnetism is suppressed for structures with a single LaTiO3 monolayer, while the bulk antife…
By combining first-principles simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we demonstrate how the interplay of quantum confinement and epitaxial strain allows to selectively design $n$- and $p$-type thermoelectric response in (LaNiO$_3$)$_3$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_1(001)$ superlattices. In particular, varying strain from $-4.9$ to $+2.9\%$ tunes the Ni orbital polarization at the interfaces from $-6$ to $+3\%$. This is caused by an electron redistribution among Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$- and $3d_{z^2}$-derived quantum well states which respond differently to strain. Owing to thi…
Ferroics, characterized by a broken symmetry state with nonzero elastic, polar, or magnetic order parameters $\vec{u}$, are recognized platforms for staging and manipulating topologically-protected structures as well as for detecting unconventional topological phenomena. The unrealized possibility of producing ordered topological phases in magnetoelectric multiferroics, exhibiting coupled magnetic and polar order parameters, is anticipated to engender novel functionality and open avenues for manipulating topological features. Here, we report the discovery of an ordered $π_1$-$S_\infty$ vortex …
Accessing the regime of coherent phonon propagation in nanostructures opens enormous possibilities to control the thermal conductivity in energy harvesting devices, phononic circuits, etc. In this paper we show that coherent phonons contribute substantially to the thermal conductivity of LaCoO3/SrTiO3 oxide superlattices, up to room temperature. We show that their contribution can be tuned through small variations of the superlattice periodicity, without changing the total superlattice thickness. Using this strategy, we tuned the thermal conductivity by 20% at room temperature. We also discuss…

We have investigated two-dimensional thermoelectric properties in transition metal oxide heterostructures. In particular, we adopted an unprecedented approach to direct tuning of the 2D carrier density using fractionally δ-doped oxide superlattices. By artificially controlling the carrier density in the 2D electron gas that emerges at a LaxSr1-xTiO3 δ-doped layer, we demonstrate that a thermopower as large as 408 μV K-1 can be reached. This approach also yielded a power factor of the 2D carriers 117 μWcm-1K-2, which is one of the largest reported values from transition metal oxide based materi…
As the length-scales of materials decrease, heterogeneities associated with interfaces approach the importance of the surrounding materials. Emergent electronic and magnetic interface properties in superlattices have been studied extensively by both experiments and theory. $^{1-6}$ However, the presence of interfacial vibrations that impact phonon-mediated responses, like thermal conductivity $^{7,8}$, has only been inferred in experiments indirectly. While it is accepted that intrinsic phonons change near boundaries $^{9,10}$, the physical mechanisms and length-scales through which interfacia…
Control of structural couplings at the complex-oxide interfaces is a powerful platform for creating new ultrathin layers with electronic and magnetic properties unattainable in the bulk. However, with the capability to design and control the electronic structure of such buried layers and interfaces at a unit-cell level, a new challenge emerges to be able to probe these engineered emergent phenomena with depth-dependent atomic resolution as well as element- and orbital selectivity. Here, we utilize a combination of core-level and valence-band soft x-ray standing-wave photoemission spectroscopy,…
A direct correlation is seen between the coercive field (HC) and the magnetic-field-dependent resistivity (MR) in SrMnO3/SrRuO3 superlattices of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The magnetoresistance shows a sharp jump at Hc for in-plane current and the out-of-plane magnetic field. Both HC and high-field MR also oscillate with the thickness of the SrMnO3 spacer layers separating the metallic ruthenate. Since the spacer in these superlattices has no mobile carriers to facilitate an oscillatory coupling, we attribute the observed behavior to the spin-polarized quantum tunneling of electrons be…
A 2D electron gas system in an oxide heterostructure serves as an important playground for novel phenomena. Here, we show that, by using fractional delta-doping to control the interface's composition in LaxSr1-xTiO3/SrTiO3 artificial oxide superlattices, the filling-controlled 2D insulator-metal transition can be realized. The atomic-scale control of d-electron band filling, which in turn contributes to the tuning of effective mass and density of the charge carriers, is found to be a fascinating route to substantially enhanced carrier mobilities.
Topological polar vortices that are the electric analogues of magnetic objects, present great potential in applications of future nanoelectronics due to their nanometer size, anomalous dielectric response, and chirality. To enable the functionalities, it is prerequisite to manipulate the polar states and chirality by using external stimuli. Here, we probe the evolutions of polar state and chirality of polar vortices in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices under electric field by using atomically resolved in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy and phase-field simulations. We find that the adj…
Controlling the electronic properties of interfaces has enormous scientific and technological implications and has been recently extended from semiconductors to complex oxides which host emergent ground states not present in the parent materials. These oxide interfaces present a fundamentally new opportunity where, instead of conventional bandgap engineering, the electronic and magnetic properties can be optimized by engineering quantum many-body interactions. We utilize an integrated oxide molecular-beam epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy system to synthesize and investigat…
We report the observation of low-frequency modes in the Raman spectra of thin-film superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7-δ} $ and various manganite perovskites. Our study shows that these modes are caused by the backfolding of acoustic phonons due to the additional periodicity introduced by the superlattice. Such modes were previously only observed for ultra-pure semiconductor superlattices. They can be used to determine the bilayer thickness of the superlattice and its speed of sound. Moreover, we use the spatial resolution of Raman microscopy to map…
Ab initio calculations are used to predict that a superlattice composed of layers of LaTiO3 and LaNiO3 alternating along the [001] direction is a S=1 Mott insulator with large magnetic moments on the Ni sites, negligible moments on the Ti sites and a charge transfer gap set by the energy difference between Ni d and Ti d states, distinct from conventional Mott insulators. Correlation effects are enhanced on the Ni sites via filling the oxygen p states and reducing the Ni-O-Ni bond angle. Small hole (electron) doping of the superlattice leads to a two-dimensional single-band situation with holes…
The competition between collective quantum phases in materials with strongly correlated electrons depends sensitively on the dimensionality of the electron system, which is difficult to control by standard solid-state chemistry. We have fabricated superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the wide-gap insulator LaAlO3 with atomically precise layer sequences. Using optical ellipsometry and low-energy muon spin rotation, superlattices with LaNiO3 as thin as two unit cells are shown to undergo a sequence of collective metalinsulator and antiferromagnetic transitions as a function of decr…

The origin of the functional properties of complex oxide superlattices can be resolved using time-resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction into contributions from the component layers making up the repeating unit. The CaTiO3 layers of a CaTiO3/BaTiO3 superlattice have a piezoelectric response to an applied electric field, consistent with a large continuous polarization throughout the superlattice. The overall piezoelectric coefficient at large strains, 54 pm/V, agrees with first-principles predictions in which a tetragonal symmetry is imposed on the superlattice by the SrTiO3 substrate.
The number of atomic layers confined in a two-dimensional structure is crucial for the electronic and magnetic properties. Single-layer and bilayer $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ square lattices are well-known examples where the presence of the extra layer turns the XY-anisotropy to the $c$-axis anisotropy. We report on experimental realization of a hybrid SrIrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice that integrates monolayer and bilayer square lattices in one layered structure. By synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, magnetization, and resistivity measurements, we found that the hybrid…
Perovskite bilayers with (111)-orientation combine a honeycomb lattice as a key feature with the strongly correlated, multiorbital nature of electrons in transition metal oxides. In a systematic DFT+$U$ study of (111)-oriented (La$X$O$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_4$ superlattices, we establish trends in the evolution of ground states versus band filling in (111)-oriented (La$X$O$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_4$ superlattices, with $X$ spanning the entire $3d$ transition metal series. The competition between local quasi-cubic and global triangular symmetry triggers unanticipated broken symmetry phases, with m…
Understanding the nature of electrical conductivity, superconductivity and magnetism between layers of oxides is of immense importance for the design of electronic devices employing oxide heterostructures. We demonstrate that resonant inelastic X-ray scattering can be applied to directly probe the carriers in oxide heterostructures. Our investigation on epitaxially grown LaAlO3/SrTiO3 superlattices unambiguously reveals the presence of both localized and delocalized Ti 3d carriers. These two types of carriers are caused by oxygen vacancies and electron transfer due to the polar discontinuity a…

First-principles techniques are used to investigate the behavior of BiFeO$_{3}$/LaFeO$_{3}$ perovskite oxide superlattices epitaxially grown on a (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrate. The calculations show that 1/1 superlattices exhibit a $Pmc2_1$ ground state combining a trilinear coupling of one polar and two oxygen rotational lattice modes, and weak ferromagnetism. The microscopic mechanism allowing one to manipulate the magnetization with an electric field in such systems is presented and its dependence on strain and chemical substitution is discussed. BiFeO$_{3}$/LaFeO$_{3}$ artificial superlattices…

The epitaxial stabilization of a single layer or superlattice structures composed of complex oxide materials on polar (111) surfaces is severely burdened by reconstructions at the interface, that commonly arise to neutralize the polarity. We report on the synthesis of high quality LaNiO$_3$/mLaAlO$_3$ pseudo cubic (111) superlattices on polar (111)-oriented LaAlO$_3$, the proposed complex oxide candidate for a topological insulating behavior. A series of superlattices composed of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) and ferroelectric/paraelectric Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ (0$\leq $x$\leq $1) were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition. Films of epitaxial nature comprised of spherical mounds having uniform size are obtained. Magnetotransport properties of the films reveal a ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the range of 145-158 K and negative magnetoresistance as high as 30%, depending on the type of ferroelectric layers employed for their growth (\QTR{it}{i.e.} '\QTR{it}{x'} value). Ferroelec…
The nature of the magnetic order in (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)9/(LaNiO3)3 superlattices is investigated using x-ray resonant magnetic reflectometry. We observe a new c-axis magnetic helix state in the (LaNiO3)3 layers that had never been reported in nickelates, and which mediates the ~130deg magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)9 layers, illustrating the power of x-rays for discovering the magnetic state of complex oxide interfaces. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy show that Ni-O ligand hole states from bulk LaNiO3 are mostly filled due to inte…
We employed first-principles density functional theory calculations guided by group-theoretical analysis and demonstrated the control of insulator-metal-insulator transition, polarization and two sublattice magnetization in (LaFeO$_3$)$_1$/(CaFeO$_3$)$_1$ superlattice via. multi structural mode coupling i.e., 'multimode coupling'. We have discovered a polar A-type charge disproportionation mode, Q$_{ACD}$ (analogous to the A-type antiferromagnetic ordering), and found that it couples with the trilinear coupling, $Q_{Tri}$ mode (common in $Pnma$ perovskite oxides and involves three structural m…
The structure and the magnetic properties of an InGaAs/Fe3Si superlattice in a cylindrical geometry are investigated by electron microscopy techniques, x-ray diffraction and magnetometry. To form a radial superlattice, a pseudomorphic InGaAs/Fe3As bilayer has been released from its substrate self-forming into a rolled-up microtube. Oxide-free interfaces as well as areas of crystalline bonding are observed and an overall lattice mismatch between succeeding layers is determined. The cylindrical symmetry of the final radial superlattice shows a significant effect on the magnetization behavior of …
In the quest for quantum spin liquids, thin films are expected to open the way for the control of intricate magnetic interactions in actual materials by exploiting epitaxial strain and two-dimensionality. However, materials compatible with conventional thin-film growth methods have largely remained undeveloped. As a promising candidate towards the materialization of quantum spin liquids in thin films, we here present a robust ilmenite-type oxide with a honeycomb lattice of edge-sharing IrO$_6$ octahedra artificially stabilized by superlattice formation with an ilmenite-type antiferromagnetic o…
Tunable quantum phase transitions and novel emergent fermions in solid state materials are fascinating subjects of research. Here, we propose a new stable two-dimensional (2D) material, the blue phosphorene oxide (BPO), which exhibits both. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that its equilibrium state is a narrow-bandgap semiconductor with three bands at low energy. Remarkably, a moderate strain can drive a semiconductor-to-semimetal quantum phase transition in BPO. At the critical transition point, the three bands cross at a single point at Fermi level, around which the quasipart…
In the framework of the modern theory of polarization, we rigorously establish the microscopic nature of the electric displacement field D. In particular, we show that the longitudinal component of D is preserved at a coherent and insulating interface. To motivate and elucidate our derivation, we use the example of LAO/STO interfaces and superlattices, where the validity of the above conservation law is not immediately obvious. Our results generalize the "locality principle" of constrained-D density functional theory to the first-principles modeling of charge-mismatched systems.

Emergent behavior at complex oxide interfaces has driven much of the research in the oxide thin film community for the past twenty years. Interfaces have been engineered for potential applications in spintronics, topological quantum computing, and high-speed electronics in cases where the bulk materials would not exhibit the desired properties. Advances in thin film growth have made the synthesis of these interfaces possible, while surface characterization tools such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been critical to understanding surface and interfacial phenomena in these materials. In…
Artifical superlattice (SL) potentials have been employed extensively for band structure engineering of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac electron gas in graphene. While such engineered electronic band structures can modify optical or plasmonic properties of graphene, an emergent polaritonic behavior beyond weak perturbative effects (e.g. anisotropic Drude weights) has not been reported. Here, we show that an extreme modulation of one-dimensional (1D) SL potentials in monolayer graphene deforms the underlying Dirac band dispersion and introduces ladder-like energy levels near the Fermi surface, which…
The atomic-level control achievable in artificially-structured oxide superlattices provides a unique opportunity to explore interface phases of matter including high-density 2D electron gases. Electronic-structure calculations show that the charge distribution of the 2D gas is strongly modulated by electron-phonon interactions with significant ionic polarization. Anharmonic finite-temperature effects must be included to reproduce experiment. Density functional perturbation theory is used to parameterize a simple model introduced to represent these effects and predict temperature dependencies.
By combining ab initio simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we explore the thermoelectric properties of (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_n$(001) superlattices ($n=1,3$) and identify a strong dependence on confinement, spacer thickness, and epitaxial strain. While the system with $n=3$ shows modest values of the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, the simultaneous reduction of the LaNiO$_3$ region and the LaAlO$_3$ spacer thickness to single layers results in a strong enhancement, in particular of the in-plane values. This effect can be further tuned by us…
