Let $(X, C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along a connected reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f : (X, C) \to (Z, o)$ such that $C = f^{-1} (o)_{\mathrm{red}}$ and $-K_X$ is $f$-ample. Assume that each irreducible component of $C$ contains at most one point of index $>2$. We prove that a general member $D\in |{-}K_X|$ is a normal surface with Du Val singularities.
We study deformations of a pair of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold $X$ with only terminal singularities and its elephant $D \in |{-}K_X|$. We prove that, if there exists $D \in |{-}K_X|$ with only isolated singularities, the pair $(X,D)$ can be deformed to a pair of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold with only quotient singularities and a Du Val elephant. When there are only non-normal elephants, we reduce the existence problem of such a deformation to a local problem around the singular locus of the elephant. We also give several examples of $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-folds without Du Val elephants.
Let $f:X\to S$ be an extremal contraction from a threefolds with terminal singularities onto a surface (so called Mori conic bundle). We study some particular cases of such contractions: quotients of usual conic bundles and index two contractions. Assuming Reid's general elephants conjecture we also obtain a rough classification. We present many examples.
We show that terminal 3-fold divisorial contraction to a point of index $>1$ with non-minimal discrepancy may be factored into a sequence of flips, flops and divisorial contractions to a point with minimal discrepancies.
We study Calabi--Yau 3-folds with infinitely many divisorial contractions. We also suggest a method to describe Calabi--Yau 3-folds with the infinite automorphism group.
We study type III contractions of Calabi-Yau threefolds containing a ruled surface over a smooth curve. We discuss the conditions necessary for the image threefold to by smoothable. We describe the change in Hodge numbers caused by this contraction and smoothing deformation. A generalization of a fomula for calculating Hodge numbers of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ with ordinary double and triple points is presented. We use these results to construct new Calabi-Yau threefolds of Picard rank two arising from a family of quintic threefolds containing a cone.
We construct 16 new examples of Calabi--Yau threefolds with Picard group of rank 1. Each of these examples is obtained by smoothing the image of a primitive contraction with exceptional divisor being a del Pezzo surface of degree 6, 7 or $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$.
We construct examples of primitive contractions of Calabi--Yau threefolds with exceptional locus being $ \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{P}^2$, and smooth del Pezzo surfaces of degrees $\leq 5$. We describe the images of these primitive contractions and find their smoothing families. In particular, we give a method to compute the Hodge numbers of a generic fiber of the smoothing family of each Calabi--Yau threefold with one isolated singularity obtained after a primitive contraction of type II. As an application, we get examples of natural conifold transitions between some families…
We treat threefolds with divisorial contractions whose exceptional divisors contract to compound Du Val points. We prove that general elements in their anticanonical systems around the exceptional divisors have at worst Du Val singularities. As applications to classification, we describe divisorial contractions to compound A_n points, and moreover we conclude that discrepancies of divisorial contractions to compound D_n or E_n points are at most four.
Let $(X, C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along an irreducible reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f: (X, C)\to (Z, o)$ such that $C=f^{-1}(o)_{red}$ and $-K_X$ is ample. Assume that $(X, C)$ contains a point of type (IIA) and that a general member $H\in |O_X|$ containing $C$ is normal. We classify such germs in terms of $H$.
Assume that $(X, C)$ contains a point of type (IIA). This paper continues our study of such germs containing a point of type (IIA) started in our previous paper arXiv:1601.07671.
Let $(X,C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along an irreducible reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f: (X,C)\to (Z,o)$ such that $C=f^{-1}(o)_{red}$ and $-K_X$ is ample. Assume that $(X,C)$ contains a point of type (IC) or (IIB). We complete the classification of such germs in terms of a general member $H\in |\mathcal O_X|$ containing $C$.
We prove that the ACC conjecture for minimal log discrepancies holds for threefolds in $[1-δ,+\infty)$, where $δ>0$ only depends on the coefficient set. We also study Reid's general elephant for pairs, and show Shokurov's conjecture on the existence of $(ε,n)$-complements for threefolds for any $ε\geq 1$. As a key important step, we prove the uniform boundedness of divisors computing minimal log discrepancies for terminal threefolds. We show the ACC for threefold canonical thresholds, and that the set of accumulation points of threefold canonical thresholds is equal to $\{0\}\cup\{\frac{1}{n}\…
Let $(X,C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along an irreducible reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f: (X,C)\to (Z,o)$ such that $C=f^{-1}(o)_{\red}$ and $-K_X$ is ample. Assume that a general member $F\in |-K_X|$ meets $C$ only at one point $P$ and furthermore $(F,P)$ is Du Val of type A if index$(X,P)=4$. We classify all such germs in terms of a general member $H\in |O_X|$ containing $C$.

We shall investigate a flipping contraction g : X -> Y from a 4-fold X with at most isolated complete intersection singularities. If Y has an anti-bi-canonical divisor (=bi-elephant) with only rational singularities, then g carries an inductive structure chained up by blow-ups (La Torre Pendente), and in particular the flip exists. This naturally contains Miles Reid's `Pagoda' as an anti-canonical divisor (=elephant) and its proper transforms.
An extremal curve germ is the analytic germ of a threefold with terminal singularities along a reduced complete curve admitting a contraction whose fibers have dimension at most one. The aim of the present paper is to review the results concerning those contractions whose central fiber is irreducible and contains only one non-Gorenstein point.
Let $f\colon X\to S$ be an extremal contraction from a threefold with only terminal singularities to a surface. We study local analytic structure such contractions near degenerate fiber $C$ in the case when $C$ is irreducible and $X$ has on $C$ only one non-Gorenstein point.
This work was initially motivated by Miranda's work on elliptic Weierstrass threefolds. Miranda [Mi] describes a smooth equidimensional (flat) model for any elliptic Weierstrass threefold; such models occur naturally in the study of moduli spaces. In this paper we use minimal model theory to link birational maps of log surfaces (log contractions) to equidimensional fibrations of elliptic threefolds. As a corollary we show that an elliptic fibration of positive Kodaira dimension has a minimal model with an equidimensional birationally equivalent elliptic fibration satisfying certain good proper…
In this paper we study a local structure of extrmal contractions $f\colon X\to S$ from threffolds $X$ with only terminal singularities onto a surface $S$. If the surface $S$ is non-singular and $X$ has a unique non-Gorenstein point on a fiber we prove that either the linear system $|-K_X|$, $|-2K_X|$ or $|-3K_X|$ contains a "good" divisor.
The main propose of this paper is to show that Bridgeland's moduli space of perverse point sheaves for certain flopping contractions gives the flops, and the Fourier-Mukai transform given by the birational correspondence of the flop is an equivalence between bounded derived categories.
In this note we show a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for pl-contractions on threefolds in characteristic $p>5$. We deduce several applications for klt threefolds: the vanishing of higher direct images of structure sheaves of Mori fibre spaces, Kollár's result on local vanishing and the rationality of the singularities of the base of a conic bundle.
In this short note we show that the closed cone of moving curves of a smooth Fano-threefold is polyhedral. The proof relies on a famous result of Bucksom, Demailly, Paun and Peternell which says that the strongly movable cone is dual to the cone of pseudoeffective divisors. Finally, we relate the extremal rays of the cone of moving curves on a threefold with extremal rays in the cone of strongly movable curves on a birational model obtained by a Mori contraction.
We prove the rationality of the Kähler cone and the positivity of $c_2(X)$, if $X$ is a Calabi-Yau-threefold with $ρ(X)=2$ and has an embedding into a ${\bb P}^n$-bundle over ${\bb P}^m$ in the cases $(n,m)=(1,3),(3,1)$. The case $(n,m)=(2,2)$ has been done in the first part of this paper. Moreover, if $(n,m)=(3,1)$, we describe the 'other' contraction different from the projection.
We investigate Gromov-Witten invariants associated to exceptional classes for primitive birational contractions on a Calabi-Yau threefold X. It was observed in a previous paper that these invariants are locally defined, in that they can be calculated from knowledge of an open neighbourhood of the exceptional locus of the contraction; in this paper, we make this explicit. For Type I contractions (i.e. only finitely many exceptional curves), a method is given for calculating the Gromov-Witten invariants, and these in turn yield explicit expressions for the changes in the cubic form $D^3$ and the…
We prove the existence of a Mori contraction on a compact Kaehler threefold whose canonical bundle is (analytically) not nef if the threefold can be approximated by projective threefolds or if the algebraic dimension is 2.
We discuss the problem of classifying birational extremal contractions of smooth threefolds where the canonical bundle is trivial along the curves contracted, in the case when a divisor is contracted to a point. We prove the analytic rigidity of the contraction in the case this divisor is normal of degree >= 5 (i.e. we show that the analytic structure of the contraction is completely determined by the isomorphism class of the exceptional locus and its normal bundle in X). This was previously known only in the case of smooth exceptional locus.
We consider $K_X$-negative extremal contractions $f\colon X\to (Z,o)$, where $X$ is an algebraic threefold with only $ε$-log terminal Q-factorial singularities and $(Z,o)$ is a two (resp., one)-dimensional germ. The main result is that $K_X$ is 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6-complementary or we have, so called, exceptional case and then the singularity $(Z\in o)$ is bounded (resp., the multiplicity of the central fiber $f^{-1}(o)$ is bounded).
We prove the boundedness theorem for Fano threefolds with log-terminal singularities of any fixed index. This is an improvement of our earlier result, where we required additionally that the variety is Q-factorial, with Picard number 1. The new ideas of the paper include the following. 1. Using Alexeev Minimal Model program with suitable boundary to find horizontal extremal contractions. 2. Using Kollár's effective Base Point Freeness theorem. 3. Using Kawamata's result on the length of extremal curves with suitable boundary to avoid gluing curves in some cases.
We continue the classification of terminal Fano threefolds with an effective two-torus action. In earlier work we settled the Q-factorial case with Picard number one. Here we treat the larger class of varieties that do not admit any contraction of a prime divisor; these are called combinatorially minimal.
We prove that if $X---> X^+$ is a threefold terminal flip, then $c_1(X).c_2(X)\leq c_1(X^+).c_2(X^+)$ where $c_1(X)$ and $c_2(X)$ denote the Chern classes. This gives the affirmative answer to a Question by Xie \cite{Xie2}. We obtain the similar but weaker result in the case of divisorial contraction to curves.
Normally one assumes isolated surface singularities to be normal. The purpose of this paper is to show that it can be useful to look at nonnormal singularities. By deforming them interesting normal singularities can be constructed, such as isolated, non Cohen-Macaulay threefold singularities. They arise by a small contraction of a smooth rational curve, whose normal bundle has a sufficiently positive subbundle. We study such singularities from their nonnormal general hyperplane section.
M-theory compactification leads one to consider 7-manifolds obtained by rolling Calabi-Yau threefolds in the web of Calabi-Yau moduli spaces. The resulting 7-space in general has singularities governed by the extremal transition undergone. After providing some background in Sec. 1, the simplest case of conifold transitions is studied in Sec. 2. In Sec. 3 we employ topological methods, Smale's classification theorem of smooth simply-connected spin closed 5-manifolds, and a computer code in the Appendix to understand the 5-manifolds that appear as the link of the singularity of a singuler Calabi…
