The \textit{heavy-fluxonium} circuit is a promising building block for superconducting quantum processors due to its long relaxation and dephasing time at the half-flux frustration point. However, the suppressed charge matrix elements and low transition frequency have made it challenging to perform fast single-qubit gates using standard protocols. We report on new protocols for reset, fast coherent control, and readout, that allow high-quality operation of the qubit with a 14 MHz transition frequency, an order of magnitude lower in energy than the ambient thermal energy scale. We utilize higher levels of the fluxonium to initialize the qubit with $97$\% fidelity, corresponding to cooling it to $190~\mathrm{μK}$. We realize high-fidelity control using a universal set of single-cycle flux gates, which are comprised of directly synthesizable fast pulses, while plasmon-assisted readout is used for measurements. On a qubit with $T_1, T_{2e}\sim$~300~$\mathrm{μs}$, we realize single-qubit gates in $20-60$~ns with an average gate fidelity of $99.8\%$ as characterized by randomized benchmarking.
Coherent controlization, i.e., coherent conditioning of arbitrary single- or multi-qubit operations on the state of one or more control qubits, is an important ingredient for the flexible implementation of many algorithms in quantum computation. This is of particular significance when certain subroutines are changing over time or when they are frequently modified, such as in decision-making algorithms for learning agents. We propose a scheme to realize coherent controlization for any number of superconducting qubits coupled to a microwave resonator. For two and three qubits, we present an expl…
We propose a experimentally feasible scheme to demonstrate the geometric phase in flux qubits by means of detuning coherent microwave pulse techniques. Through measuring the probability of the persistent current state in flux qubits, one can detect the Berry phase that is acquired with system's Hamiltonian adiabatical circular evolution in the parameter space. Furthermore, we show that one should choose an appropriate amplitude of pulses in an experiment to obtain high readout resolution when detuning frequency of pulses is fixed and controlled phase shift gates can be implemented based on the…
We replace the Josephson junction defining a three-junction flux qubit's properties with a tunable direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (DC-SQUID) in order to tune the qubit gap during the experiment. We observe different gaps as a function of the external magnetic pre-biasing field and the local magnetic field through the DC-SQUID controlled by high-bandwidth on chip control lines. The persistent current and gap behavior correspond to numerical simulation results. We set the sensitivity of the gap on the control lines during the sample design stage. With a tuning range …
Electron-spin nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond are a natural candidate to act as a quantum memory for superconducting qubits because of their large collective coupling and long coherence times. We report here the first demonstration of strong coupling and coherent exchange of a single quantum of energy between a flux-qubit and an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy color centers.
We have incorporated a single crystal silicon shunt capacitor into a Josephson phase qubit. The capacitor is derived from a commercial silicon-on-insulator wafer. Bosch reactive ion etching is used to create a suspended silicon membrane; subsequent metallization on both sides is used to form the capacitor. The superior dielectric loss of the crystalline silicon leads to a significant increase in qubit energy relaxation times. T1 times up to 1.6 micro-second were measured, more than a factor of two greater than those seen in amorphous phase qubits. The design is readily scalable to larger integ…
A major challenge in the field of quantum computing is the construction of scalable qubit coupling architectures. Here, we demonstrate a novel tuneable coupling circuit that allows superconducting qubits to be coupled over long distances. We show that the inter-qubit coupling strength can be arbitrarily tuned over nanosecond timescales within a sequence that mimics actual use in an algorithm. The coupler has a measured on/off ratio of 1000. The design is self-contained and physically separate from the qubits, allowing the coupler to be used as a module to connect a variety of elements such as …
We have analyzed theoretically the operation of the Bayesian quantum feedback of a solid-state qubit, designed to maintain perfect coherent oscillations in the qubit for arbitrarily long time. In particular, we have studied the feedback efficiency in presence of dephasing environment and detector nonideality. Also, we have analyzed the effect of qubit parameter deviations and studied the quantum feedback control of an energy-asymmetric qubit.
A major challenge in operating multi-qubit quantum processors is to mitigate multi-qubit coherent errors. For superconducting circuits, besides crosstalk originating from imperfect isolation of control lines, dispersive coupling between qubits is a major source of multi-qubit coherent errors. We benchmark phase errors in a controlled-phase gate due to dispersive coupling of either of the qubits involved in the gate to one or more spectator qubits. We measure the associated gate infidelity using quantum process tomography. In addition, we point out that, due to coupling of the gate qubits to a …
A fault-tolerant quantum processor may be configured using stationary qubits interacting only with their nearest neighbours, but at the cost of significant overheads in physical qubits per logical qubit. Such overheads could be reduced by coherently transporting qubits across the chip, allowing connectivity beyond immediate neighbours. Here we demonstrate high-fidelity coherent transport of an electron spin qubit between quantum dots in isotopically-enriched silicon. We observe qubit precession in the inter-site tunnelling regime and assess the impact of qubit transport using Ramsey interferom…
We demonstrate coherent control and measurement of a superconducting qubit coupled to a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator with a dynamically tunable qubit-cavity coupling strength. Rabi oscillations are measured for several coupling strengths showing that the qubit transition can be turned off by a factor of more than 1500. We show how the qubit can still be accessed in the off state via fast flux pulses. We perform pulse delay measurements with synchronized fast flux pulses on the device and observe $T_1$ and $T_2$ times of 1.6 and 1.9 $μ$s, respectively. This work demonstrates how…
Qubits driven by resonant strong pulses are studied and a parameter regime is explored in which the dynamics can be solved in closed form. Instantaneous coherent destruction of tunneling can be seen for longer pulses, whereas shorter pulses allow a fast preparation of the qubit state. Results are compared with recent experiments of pulsed nitrogen-vacancy center spin qubits in diamond.
We propose a hybrid system composed of a Majorana qubit and a nanomechanical resonator, implemented by a spin-orbit-coupled superconducting nanowire, using a set of static and oscillating ferromagnetic gates. The ferromagnetic gates induce Majorana bound states in the nanowire, which hybridize and constitute a Majorana qubit. Due to the oscillation of one of these gates, the Majorana qubit can be coherently rotated. By tuning the gate voltage to modulate the local spin-orbit coupling, it is possible to reach the resonance of the qubit-oscillator system for relatively strong couplings.
We propose an approach to coherently transfer populations between selected quantum states in one- and two-qubit systems by using controllable Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passages (SCRAPs). These {\it evolution-time insensitive} transfers, assisted by easily implementable single-qubit phase-shift operations, could serve as elementary logic gates for quantum computing. Specifically, this proposal could be conveniently demonstrated with existing Josephson phase qubits. Our proposal can find an immediate application in the readout of these qubits. Indeed, the broken parity symmetries of the boun…
We propose the use of coherent control of a multi-qubit--cavity QED system in order to explore novel phase transition phenomena in a general class of multi-qubit--cavity systems. In addition to atomic systems, the associated super-radiant phase transitions should be observable in a variety of solid-state experimental systems, including the technologically important case of interacting quantum dots coupled to an optical cavity mode.
Coupling Majorana fermion excitations to coherent external fields is an important stage towards their manipulation and detection. We analyse the charge and transmon regimes of a topological nano-wire embedded within a Cooper-Pair-Box, where the superconducting phase difference is coupled to the zero energy parity states that arise from Majorana quasi-particles. We show that at special gate bias points, the photon-qubit coupling can be switched off via quantum interference, and in other points it is exponentially dependent on the control parameter $E_J/E_C$. As well as a probe for topological-s…
We demonstrate a planar, tunable superconducting qubit with energy relaxation times up to 44 microseconds. This is achieved by using a geometry designed to both minimize radiative loss and reduce coupling to materials-related defects. At these levels of coherence, we find a fine structure in the qubit energy lifetime as a function of frequency, indicating the presence of a sparse population of incoherent, weakly coupled two-level defects. This is supported by a model analysis as well as experimental variations in the geometry. Our `Xmon' qubit combines facile fabrication, straightforward conne…
We propose to implement tunable interfaces for realizing universal quantum computation with topological qubits. One interface is between the topological and superconducting qubits, which can realize arbitrary single-qubit gate on the topological qubit. When two qubits are involved, the interface between the topological qubits and a microwave cavity can induce a nontrivial two-qubit gate, which can not be constructed based on braiding operations. The two interfaces, being tunable via an external magnetic flux, may serve as the building blocks towards universal quantum computation with topologic…
We demonstrate that the [Yb(trensal)] molecule is a prototypical coupled electronic qubit-nuclear qudit system. The combination of noise-resilient nuclear degrees of freedom and large reduction of nutation time induced by electron-nuclear mixing enables coherent manipulation of this qudit by radio-frequency pulses. Moreover, the multi-level structure of the qudit is exploited to encode and operate a qubit with embedded basic quantum error correction.
We study quantum teleportation between two different types of optical qubits using hybrid entanglement as a quantum channel under decoherence effects. One type of qubit employs the vacuum and single photon states for the basis, called a single-rail single-photon qubit, and the other utilizes coherent states of opposite phases. We find that teleportation from a single-rail single-photon qubit to a coherent state qubit is better than the opposite direction in terms of fidelity and success probability. We compare our results with those using a different type of hybrid entanglement between a polar…
We construct optimized implementations of the CNOT and other universal two-qubit gates that, unlike many of the previously proposed protocols, are carried out in a single step. The new protocols require tunable inter-qubit couplings but, in return, show a significant improvements in the quality of gate operations. Our optimization procedure can be further extended to the combinations of elementary two-qubit as well as irreducible many-qubit gates.
We present a new experimental protocol for performing universal gates in a register of superconducting qubits coupled by fixed on-chip linear reactances. The qubits have fixed, detuned Larmor frequencies and can remain, during the entire gate operation, biased at their optimal working point where decoherence due to fluctuations in control parameters is suppressed to first order. Two-qubit gates are performed by simultaneously irradiating two qubits at their respective Larmor frequencies with appropriate amplitude and phase, while one-qubit gates are performed by the usual single-qubit irradiat…
We propose a sequence of pulses intended to preserve the state of a qubit in the presence of strong, coherent coupling to another quantum system. The sequence can be understood as a generalized SWAP and works in formal analogy to the well-known spin echo. Since the resulting effective decoherence rate of the qubits state is strongly influenced by the additional system, this sequence might serve to protect its quantum state as well as negating the effects of the coherent coupling. A possible area of application are large scale quantum computing architectures, where spectral crowding of the reso…
In this work we demonstrate theoretically how to use external laser field to control the population inversion of a single quantum dot exciton qubit in a nanocavity. We consider the Jaynes-Cummings model to describe the system, and the incoherent losses were take into account by using Lindblad operators. We have demonstrated how to prepare the initial state in a superposition of the exciton in the ground state and the cavity in a coherent state. The effects of exciton-cavity detuning, the laser-cavity detunings, the pulse area and losses over the qubit dynamics are analyzed. We also show how to…
The quantum degeneracy point approach [D. Vion et al., Science 296, 886 (2002)] effectively protects superconducting qubits from low-frequency noise that couples with the qubits as transverse noise. However, low-frequency noise in superconducting qubits can originate from various mechanisms and can couple with the qubits either as transverse or as longitudinal noise. Here, we present a quantum circuit containing a universal quantum degeneracy point that protects an encoded qubit from arbitrary low-frequency noise. We further show that universal quantum logic gates can be performed on the encod…
The coherent control of spin qubits forms the basis of many applications in quantum information processing and nanoscale sensing, imaging and spectroscopy. Such control is conventionally achieved by direct driving of the qubit transition with a resonant global field, typically at microwave frequencies. Here we introduce an approach that relies on the resonant driving of nearby environment spins, whose localised magnetic field in turn drives the qubit when the environmental spin Rabi frequency matches the qubit resonance. This concept of environmentally mediated resonance (EMR) is explored expe…
We study the coherent control of microwave photons propagating in a superconducting waveguide consisting of coupled transmission line resonators, each of which is connected to a tunable charge qubit. While these coupled line resonators form an artificial photonic crystal with an engineered photonic band structure, the charge qubits collectively behave as spin waves in the low excitation limit, which modify the band-gap structure to slow and stop the microwave propagation. The conceptual exploration here suggests an electromagnetically controlled quantum device based on the on-chip circuit QED …
Based on a pure solid-state device consisting of two superconducting LC circuits coupled to a superconducting flux qubit, we propose in this paper that the maximally entangled coherent states of the two LC modes can be generated for arbitrary coherent states through flux qubit controls.
A scheme based on Coherent Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP) of exchange-only spin qubit quantum states in a linearly arranged double quantum dot chain is demonstrated. Logical states for the qubit are defined by adopting the spin state of three electrons confined in a double quantum dot. The possibility to obtain gate operations entirely with electrical manipulations makes this qubit a valuable architecture in the field of quantum computing for the implementation of quantum algorithms. The effect of the external control parameters as well as the effect of the dephasing on the coherent tun…
Initialization, manipulation, and measurement of a three-spin qubit are demonstrated using a few-electron triple quantum dot, where all operations can be driven by tuning the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. Multiplexed reflectometry, applied to two nearby charge sensors, allows for qubit readout. Decoherence is found to be consistent with predictions based on gate voltage noise with a uniform power spectrum. The theory of the exchange-only qubit is developed and it is shown that initialization of only two spins suffices for operation. Requirements for full multi-qubit control using only…
In condensed matter systems, coherent backscattering and quantum interference in the presence of time-reversal symmetry lead to well-known phenomena such as weak localization (WL) and universal conductance fluctuations (UCF). Here we use multi-pass Landau-Zener transitions at the avoided crossing of a highly-coherent superconducting qubit to emulate these phenomena. The average and standard deviation of the qubit transition rate exhibit a dip and peak when the driving waveform is time-reversal symmetric, analogous to WL and UCF, respectively. The higher coherence of this qubit enabled the real…
We propose computing bus devices that enable quantum information to be coherently transferred between topological and conventional qubits. We describe a concrete realization of such a topological quantum bus acting between a topological qubit in a Majorana wire network and a conventional semiconductor double quantum dot qubit. Specifically, this device measures the joint (fermion) parity of these two different qubits by using the Aharonov-Casher effect in conjunction with an ancilliary superconducting flux qubit that facilitates the measurement. Such a parity measurement, together with the abi…
Introducing classical fields, we can transfer entanglement completely from discrete qubits into entangled coherent state. The entanglement also can be retrieved from the continuous-variable state of the cavities to the atomic qubits. Via postselection measure, atomic entangled state and entangled coherent state can be mutual transformed fully.
We considered a nanoelectromechanical system consisting of a movable Cooper-pair box qubit which is subject to an electrostatic field, and coupled to the two bulk superconductors via tunneling processes. We suggest that qubit dynamics is related to the one of a quantum oscillator and demonstrate that a bias voltage applied between superconductors generates states represented by the entanglement of qubit states and coherent states of the oscillator if certain resonant conditions are fulfilled. It is shown that a structure of this entanglement may be controlled by the bias voltage in a way that …
Semiconductor qubits rely on the control of charge and spin degrees of freedom of electrons or holes confined in quantum dots (QDs). They constitute a promising approach to quantum information processing [1, 2], complementary to superconducting qubits [3]. Typically, semiconductor qubit-qubit coupling is short range [1, 2, 4, 5], effectively limiting qubit distance to the spatial extent of the wavefunction of the confined particle, which represents a significant constraint towards scaling to reach dense 1D or 2D arrays of QD qubits. Following the success of circuit quantum eletrodynamics [6], …
We consider an $N$ qubit system and show that in the symmetric subspace, $\mathbb{S}$ a state is not globally entangled, iff it is a coherent state. It is also proven that in the orthogonal complement $\mathbb{S}_{\bot}$ all states are globally entangled.
Coherent control of quantum states is at the heart of implementing solid-state quantum processors and testing quantum mechanics at the macroscopic level. Despite significant progress made in recent years in controlling single- and bi-partite quantum systems, coherent control of quantum wave function in multipartite systems involving artificial solid-state qubits has been hampered due to the relatively short decoherence time and lacking of precise control methods. Here we report the creation and coherent manipulation of quantum states in a tripartite quantum system, which is formed by a superco…
We investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit-oscillator system embedded in a noisy environment by employing the hierarchical equations of motion approach. It is found that the decoherence rate of the whole qubit-oscillator-bath system can be significantly suppressed by enhancing the coupling strength between the qubit and the harmonic oscillator. Moreover, we find that the non-Markovian memory character of the bath is able to facilitate a robust quantum coherent dynamics in this qubit-oscillator-bath system. Our findings may be used to engineer some tunable coherent manipulations in me…
Low-frequency noise can induce serious decoherence in superconducting qubits. Due to its diverse physical origin, such noise can couple with the qubits either as transverse or as longitudinal noise. Here, we present a universal quantum degeneracy point approach that can protect an encoded qubit from arbitrary low-frequency noise. We further show that universal quantum logic gates can be performed on the encoded qubits with high fidelity. The proposed scheme can be readily implemented with superconducting flux qubits or with a qubit coupling with a superconducting resonator. Meanwhile, the sche…
Solid-state quantum emitters with manipulable spin-qubits are promising platforms for quantum communication applications. Although such light-matter interfaces could be realized in many systems only a few allow for light emission in the telecom bands necessary for long-distance quantum networks. Here, we propose and implement a new optically active solid-state spin-qubit based on a hole confined in a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot grown on an InGaAs metamorphic buffer layer emitting photons in the C-band. We lift the hole spin-degeneracy using an external magnetic field and demonstrate hole inje…
We experimentally demonstrate coherence recovery of singlet-triplet superpositions by interlacing qubit rotations between Carr-Purcell (CP) echo sequences. We then compare performance of Hahn, CP, concatenated dynamical decoupling (CDD) and Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) for singlet recovery. In the present case, where gate noise and drift combined with spatially varying hyperfine coupling contribute significantly to dephasing, and pulses have limited bandwidth, CP and CDD yield comparable results, with T2 ~ 80 microseconds.
High-fidelity gate operations are essential to the realization of a fault-tolerant quantum computer. In addition, the physical resources required to implement gates must scale efficiently with system size. A longstanding goal of the superconducting qubit community is the tight integration of a superconducting quantum circuit with a proximal classical cryogenic control system. Here we implement coherent control of a superconducting transmon qubit using a Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) pulse driver cofabricated on the qubit chip. The pulse driver delivers trains of quantized flux pulses to the qubit …
Quantum annealing is an optimization technique which potentially leverages quantum tunneling to enhance computational performance. Existing quantum annealers use superconducting flux qubits with short coherence times, limited primarily by the use of large persistent currents $I_\mathrm{p}$. Here, we examine an alternative approach, using qubits with smaller $I_\mathrm{p}$ and longer coherence times. We demonstrate tunable coupling, a basic building block for quantum annealing, between two flux qubits with small ($\sim 50~\mathrm{nA}$) persistent currents. Furthermore, we characterize qubit coh…
Operation speed and coherence time are two core measures for the viability of a qubit. Strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and relatively weak hyperfine interaction make holes in germanium (Ge) intriguing candidates for spin qubits with rapid, all-electrical coherent control. Here we report ultrafast single-spin manipulation in a hole-based double quantum dot in a germanium hut wire (GHW). Mediated by the strong SOI, a Rabi frequency exceeding 540 MHz is observed at a magnetic field of 100 mT, setting a record for ultrafast spin qubit control in semiconductor systems. We demonstrate that the s…
We introduce a new gate that transfers an arbitrary state of a qubit into a superposition of two quasi-orthogonal coherent states of a cavity mode, with opposite phases. This qcMAP gate is based on conditional qubit and cavity operations exploiting the energy level dispersive shifts, in the regime where they are much stronger than the cavity and qubit linewidths. The generation of multi-component superpositions of quasi-orthogonal coherent states, non-local entangled states of two resonators and multi-qubit GHZ states can be efficiently achieved by this gate.
We discuss and experimentally demonstrate a probabilistic Hadamard gate for coherent state qubits. The scheme is based on linear optical components, non-classical resources and the joint projective action of a photon counter and a homodyne detector. We experimentally characterize the gate for the coherent states of the computational basis by full tomographic reconstruction of the transformed output states. Based on the parameters of the experiment we simulate the fidelity for all coherent state qubits on the Bloch sphere.
We discuss the long distance transmission of qubits encoded in optical coherent states. Through absorption these qubits suffer from two main types of errors, the reduction of the amplitude of the coherent states and accidental application of the Pauli Z operator. We show how these errors can be fixed using techniques of teleportation and error correcting codes.
Majorana bound states have been a focus of condensed matter research for their potential applications in topological quantum computation. Here we utilize two charge-qubit arrays to explicitly simulate a DIII class one-dimensional superconductor model where Majorana end states can appear. Combined with one braiding operation, universal single-qubit operations on a Majorana-based qubit can be implemented by a controllable inductive coupling between two charge qubits at the ends of the arrays. We further show that in a similar way, a controlled-NOT gate for two topological qubits can be simulated…
In this letter we propose a scheme to build up high coherent solid-state quantum bit (qubit) from two coupled quantum dots. Quantum information is stored in electron-hole pair state with the electron and hole locating in different dots, and universal quantum gates involving any pair of qubits are realized by effective coupling interaction via virtually exchanging cavity photons.
We propose a quantum state transfer from an atomic qubit to a cat-like qubit by means of one degenerate Raman interaction and one Hadamard gate operation for coherent states. We show that the coefficients of the atomic qubit can be mapped onto coherent state qubit, with an effective qubit state transfer.
Discrete coherent states for a system of $n$ qubits are introduced in terms of eigenstates of the finite Fourier transform. The properties of these states are pictured in phase space by resorting to the discrete Wigner function
We put forward a method of constructing discrete coherent states for n qubits. After establishing appropriate displacement operators, the coherent states appear as displaced versions of a fiducial vector that is fixed by imposing a number of natural symmetry requirements on its Q-function. Using these coherent states we establish a partial order in the discrete phase space, which allows us to picture some n-qubit states as apparent distributions. We also analyze correlations in terms of sums of squared Q-functions.
Readout of the state of a superconducting qubit by homodyne detection of the output signal from a dispersively coupled microwave resonator is a common technique in circuit quantum electrodynamics, and is often claimed to be quantum non-demolition (QND) up to the same order of approximation as in the dispersive approximation. However, in this work we show that only in the limit of infinite measurement time is this protocol QND, as the formation of a dressed coherent state in the qubit-cavity system applies an effective rotation to the qubit state. We show how this rotation can be corrected by a…
We demonstrate ultrafast coherent coupling between an atomic qubit stored in a single trapped cadmium ion and a photonic qubit represented by two resolved frequencies of a photon. Such ultrafast coupling is crucial for entangling networks of remotely-located trapped ions through photon interference, and is also a key component for realizing ultrafast quantum gates between Coulomb-coupled ions.
We propose a set of universal gate operations for the singlet-triplet qubit realized by two electron spins in a double quantum dot, in the presence of a fixed inhomogeneous magnetic field. All gate operations are achieved by switching the potential offset between the two dots with an electrical bias, and do not require time-dependent control of the tunnel coupling between the dots. We analyze the two-electron dynamics and calculate the effective qubit rotation angle as a function of the applied electric bias. We present explicit gate sequences for single-qubit rotations about two orthogonal ax…
In this paper we investigate the entanglement of multi-qubit fermionic coherent states described by anticommutative Grassmann numbers. Choosing an appropriate weight function, we show that it is possible to construct some entangled pure states, consisting of {\bf{GHZ}}, {\bf{W}}, Bell and biseparable states, by tensor product of fermion coherent states. Moreover a comparison with maximal entangled bosonic coherent states is presented and it is shown that in some cases they have fermionic counterpart which are maximal entangled after integration with suitable weight functions.
