Annotating a qualitative large-scale facial expression dataset is extremely difficult due to the uncertainties caused by ambiguous facial expressions, low-quality facial images, and the subjectiveness of annotators. These uncertainties lead to a key challenge of large-scale Facial Expression Recognition (FER) in deep learning era. To address this problem, this paper proposes a simple yet efficient Self-Cure Network (SCN) which suppresses the uncertainties efficiently and prevents deep networks from over-fitting uncertain facial images. Specifically, SCN suppresses the uncertainty from two different aspects: 1) a self-attention mechanism over mini-batch to weight each training sample with a ranking regularization, and 2) a careful relabeling mechanism to modify the labels of these samples in the lowest-ranked group. Experiments on synthetic FER datasets and our collected WebEmotion dataset validate the effectiveness of our method. Results on public benchmarks demonstrate that our SCN outperforms current state-of-the-art methods with \textbf{88.14}\% on RAF-DB, \textbf{60.23}\% on AffectNet, and \textbf{89.35}\% on FERPlus. The code will be available at \href{https://github.com/kaiwang960112/Self-Cure-Network}{https://github.com/kaiwang960112/Self-Cure-Network}.

Facial expression is an essential factor in conveying human emotional states and intentions. Although remarkable advancement has been made in facial expression recognition (FER) task, challenges due to large variations of expression patterns and unavoidable data uncertainties still remain. In this paper, we propose mid-level representation enhancement (MRE) and graph embedded uncertainty suppressing (GUS) addressing these issues. On one hand, MRE is introduced to avoid expression representation learning being dominated by a limited number of highly discriminative patterns. On the other hand, G…
We address the problem of suppressing facial expressions in videos because expressions can hinder the retrieval of important information in applications such as face recognition. To achieve this, we present an optical strain suppression method that removes any facial expression without requiring training for a specific expression. For each frame in a video, an optical strain map that provides the strain magnitude value at each pixel is generated; this strain map is then utilized to neutralize the expression by replacing pixels of high strain values with pixels from a reference face frame. Expe…

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) suffers from data uncertainties caused by ambiguous facial images and annotators' subjectiveness, resulting in excursive semantic and feature covariate shifting problem. Existing works usually correct mislabeled data by estimating noise distribution, or guide network training with knowledge learned from clean data, neglecting the associative relations of expressions. In this work, we propose an Adaptive Graph-based Feature Normalization (AGFN) method to protect FER models from data uncertainties by normalizing feature distributions with the association of ex…

Facial expression has a significant role in analyzing human cognitive state. Deriving an accurate facial appearance representation is a critical task for an automatic facial expression recognition application. This paper provides a new feature descriptor named as Quadrilateral Senary bit Pattern for facial expression recognition. The QUEST pattern encoded the intensity changes by emphasizing the relationship between neighboring and reference pixels by dividing them into two quadrilaterals in a local neighborhood. Thus, the resultant gradient edges reveal the transitional variation information,…

Recognition of facial expression is a challenge when it comes to computer vision. The primary reasons are class imbalance due to data collection and uncertainty due to inherent noise such as fuzzy facial expressions and inconsistent labels. However, current research has focused either on the problem of class imbalance or on the problem of uncertainty, ignoring the intersection of how to address these two problems. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a framework based on Resnet and Attention to solve the above problems. We design weight for each class. Through the penalty mechanism, our model …

Facial expressions are the most common universal forms of body language. In the past few years, automatic facial expression recognition (FER) has been an active field of research. However, it is still a challenging task due to different uncertainties and complications. Nevertheless, efficiency and performance are yet essential aspects for building robust systems. We proposed two models, EmoXNet which is an ensemble learning technique for learning convoluted facial representations, and EmoXNetLite which is a distillation technique that is useful for transferring the knowledge from our ensemble …
Automatic facial expression analysis is a challenging issue and influenced so many areas such as human computer interaction. Due to the uncertainties of the light intensity and light direction, the face gray shades are uneven and the expression recognition rate under simple Local Binary Pattern is not ideal and promising. In this paper we propose two state-of-the-art descriptors for person-independent facial expression recognition. First the face regions of the whole images in a video sequence are modeled with Volume Local Directional Binary pattern (VLDBP), which is an extended version of the…

By utilizing label distribution learning, a probability distribution is assigned for a facial image to express a compound emotion, which effectively improves the problem of label uncertainties and noises occurred in one-hot labels. In practice, it is observed that correlations among emotions are inherently different, such as surprised and happy emotions are more possibly synchronized than surprised and neutral. It indicates the correlation may be crucial for obtaining a reliable label distribution. Based on this, we propose a new method that amends the label distribution of each facial image b…

Despite the success of deep neural networks on facial action unit (AU) detection, better performance depends on a large number of training images with accurate AU annotations. However, labeling AU is time-consuming, expensive, and error-prone. Considering AU detection and facial expression recognition (FER) are two highly correlated tasks, and facial expression (FE) is relatively easy to annotate, we consider learning AU detection and FER in a multi-task manner. However, the performance of the AU detection task cannot be always enhanced due to the negative transfer in the multi-task scenario. …

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) in the wild is an extremely challenging task in computer vision due to variant backgrounds, low-quality facial images, and the subjectiveness of annotators. These uncertainties make it difficult for neural networks to learn robust features on limited-scale datasets. Moreover, the networks can be easily distributed by the above factors and perform incorrect decisions. Recently, vision transformer (ViT) and data-efficient image transformers (DeiT) present their significant performance in traditional classification tasks. The self-attention mechanism makes tran…

Deep models for facial expression recognition achieve high performance by training on large-scale labeled data. However, publicly available datasets contain uncertain facial expressions caused by ambiguous annotations or confusing emotions, which could severely decline the robustness. Previous studies usually follow the bias elimination method in general tasks without considering the uncertainty problem from the perspective of different corresponding sources. In this paper, we propose a novel method of multi-task assisted correction in addressing uncertain facial expression recognition called …

Embedding methods have achieved success in face recognition by comparing facial features in a latent semantic space. However, in a fully unconstrained face setting, the facial features learned by the embedding model could be ambiguous or may not even be present in the input face, leading to noisy representations. We propose Probabilistic Face Embeddings (PFEs), which represent each face image as a Gaussian distribution in the latent space. The mean of the distribution estimates the most likely feature values while the variance shows the uncertainty in the feature values. Probabilistic solution…

However, the automatic recognition of facial expressions using image template matching techniques suffer from the natural variability with facial features and recording conditions. In spite of the progress achieved in facial emotion recognition in recent years, the effective and computationally simple feature selection and classification technique for emotion recognition is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose an efficient and stra…
