We have studied numerically the evolution of magnetic fields in barotropic neutron stars, by performing nonlinear magnetohydrodynamical simulations with the code PLUTO. For both initially predominantly poloidal and toroidal fields, with varying strengths, we find that the field settles down to a mixed poloidal-toroidal configuration, where the toroidal component contributes between 10% and 20% of the total magnetic energy. This is, however, not a strict equilibrium, as the instability leads to the development of turbulence, which in turn gives rise to an inverse helicity cascade, which determines the final 'twisted torus' setup. The final field configuration is thus dictated by the non-linear saturation of the instability and is not stationary. The average energy of the poloidal and toroidal components, however, is approximately stable in our simulations, and a complex multipolar structure emerges at the surface, while the magnetic field is dipolar at the exterior boundary, outside the star.
This work presents an implementation of the resistive MHD equations for a generic algebraic Ohm's law which includes the effects of finite resistivity within full General Relativity. The implementation naturally accounts for magnetic-field-induced anisotropies and, by adopting a phenomenological current, is able to accurately describe electromagnetic fields in the star and in its magnetosphere. We illustrate the application of this approach in interesting systems with astrophysical implications; the aligned rotator solution and the collapse of a magnetized rotating neutron star to a black hole…
We have numerically solved the Grad-Shafranov equation for axisymmetric static MHD equilibria of matter confined at the polar cap of neutron stars. From the equilibrium solutions we explore the stability of the accretion mounds using the PLUTO MHD code. We find that pressure driven modes disrupt the equilibria beyond a threshold mound mass, forming dynamic structures, as matter spreads over the neutron star surface. Our results show that local variation of magnetic field will significantly affect the shape and nature of the cyclotron features observed in the spectra of High Mass X-ray Binaries…
We discuss basic features of steady accretion disk morphology around magnetized compact astrophysical objects. A comparison between the standard model of accretion based on visco-resistive MHD and the plasma instabilities, like ballooning modes, triggered by very low value of resistivity, is proposed.
The observations of GW170817/GRB170817A have confirmed that the coalescence of a neutron-star binary is the progenitor of a short gamma-ray burst. In the standard picture of a short gamma-ray burst, a collimated highly relativistic outflow is launched after merger and it successfully breaks out from the surrounding ejected matter. Using initial conditions inspired from numerical-relativity binary neutron-star merger simulations, we have performed general-relativistic hydrodynamic (HD) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations in which the jet is launched and propagates self-consistently. The c…
We examine the range of rest-mass densities, temperatures and magnetic fields involved in simulations of binary neutron star mergers (BNSM) and identify the conditions under which the ideal magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) breaks down using recently computed conductivities of warm, magnetized plasma created in such systems. While previous dissipative MHD studies of BNSMs assumed that dissipation sets in due to low conduction at low rest-mass densities, we show that this paradigm must be shifted: the ideal MHD is applicable up to the regime where the hydrodynamic description of matter breaks down. W…
We examine the long-term evolution of accretion tori around black hole (BH) remnants of compact object mergers involving at least one neutron star, to better understand their contribution to kilonovae and the synthesis of r-process elements. To this end, we modify the unsplit magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solver in FLASH4.5 to work in non-uniform three-dimensional spherical coordinates, enabling more efficient coverage of a large dynamic range in length scales while exploiting symmetries in the system. This modified code is used to perform BH accretion disk simulations that vary the initial magnet…
Gravitational waves provide a unique and powerful opportunity to constrain the dynamics in the interior of proto-neutron stars during core collapse supernovae. Convective motions play an important role in generating neutron stars magnetic fields, which could explain magnetar formation in the presence of fast rotation. We compute the gravitational wave emission from proto-neutron star convection and its associated dynamo, by post-processing three-dimensional MHD simulations of a model restricted to the convective zone in the anelastic approximation. We consider two different proto-neutron star …
We performed axisymmetric, grid-based, ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of oscillating cusp-filling tori orbiting a non-rotating neutron star. A pseudo-Newtonian potential was used to construct the constant angular momentum tori in equilibrium. The inner edge of the torus is terminated by a "cusp" in the effective potential. The initial motion of the model tori was perturbed with uniform sub-sonic vertical and diagonal velocity fields. As the configuration evolved in time, we measured the mass accretion rate on the neutron star surface and obtained the power spectrum. The prominent …
Neutron stars are among the most fascinating astrophysical sources, being characterized by strong gravity, densities about the nuclear one or even above, and huge magnetic fields. Their observational signatures can be extremely diverse across the electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from the periodic and low-frequency signals of radio pulsars, up to the abrupt high-energy gamma-ray flares of magnetars, where energies of ~10^46 erg are released in a few seconds. Fast-rotating and highly magnetized neutron stars are expected to launch powerful relativistic winds, whose interaction with the supernov…
Remnant accretion disks formed in compact object mergers are an important ingredient in the understanding of electromagnetic afterglows of multi-messenger gravitational-wave events. Due to magnetically and neutrino driven winds, a significant fraction of the disk mass will eventually become unbound and undergo r-process nucleosynthesis. While this process has been studied in some detail, previous studies have typically used approximate initial conditions for the accretion disks, or started from purely hydrodynamical simulations. In this work, we analyse the properties of accretion disks formed…
3D Magnetohydrodynamic simulations show that when matter accretes onto neutron stars, in particular if the misalignment angle is small, it does not constantly fall at a fixed spot. Instead, the location at which matter reaches the star moves. These moving hot spots can be produced both during stable accretion, where matter falls near the magnetic poles of the star, and unstable accretion, characterized by the presence of several tongues of matter which fall on the star near the equator, due to Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. Precise modeling with Monte Carlo simulations shows that those movemen…
We study a resistive tearing instability developing in a system evolving through the combined effect of Hall drift in the Electron-MHD limit and Ohmic dissipation. We explore first the exponential growth of the instability in the linear case and we find the fastest growing mode, the corresponding eigenvalues and dispersion relation. The instability growth rate scales as $γ\propto B^{2/3} σ^{-1/3}$ where $B$ is the magnetic field and $σ$ the electrical conductivity. We confirm the development of the tearing resistive instability in the fully non-linear case, in a plane parallel configuration wh…
We present a discussion of two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) configurations, concerning the equilibria of accretion disks of a strongly magnetized astrophysical object. We set up a viscoresistive scenario which generalizes previous two-dimensional analyses by reconciling the ideal MHD coupling of the vertical and the radial equilibria within the disk with the standard mechanism of the angular momentum transport, relying on dissipative properties of the plasma configuration. The linear features of the considered model are analytically developed and the non-linear configuration problem…
We discuss a novel instability in inertia-less electron magneto-hydrodynamics (EMHD), which arises from a combination of electron velocity shear and electron density gradients. The unstable modes have a lengthscale longer than the transverse density scale, and a growth-rate of the order of the inverse Hall timescale. We suggest that this density-shear instability may be of importance in magnetic reconnection regions on scales smaller than the ion skin depth, and in neutron star crusts. We demonstrate that the so-called Hall drift instability, previously argued to be relevant in neutron star cr…
A major uncertainty in the structure and dynamics of magnetized, radiation pressure dominated neutron star accretion columns in X-ray pulsars and pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources is that they are thought to be subject to the photon bubble instability. We present the results of two dimensional radiation relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a non-accreting, static atmosphere to study the development of this instability assuming isotropic Thomson scattering in the slow diffusion regime that is relevant to neutron star accretion columns. Photon bubbles generally grow faster toward …
High-energy phenomena in astrophysics involve quite generally a combination of relativistic motions and strong gravity. The simultaneous solution of Einstein equations and General Relativistic MHD equations is thus necessary to model with accuracy such phenomena. The so-called Conformally Flat Condition (CFC) allows a simplified treatment of Einstein equations, that can be particularly efficient in those contexts where gravitational wave emission is negligible, like core-collapse, or the formation/evolution of neutron stars. We have developed a set of codes to model axisymmetric MHD flows, in …
Three-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are performed to investigate how a magnetically confined mountain on an accreting neutron star relaxes resistively. No evidence is found for non-ideal MHD instabilities on a short time-scale, such as the resistive ballooning mode or the tearing mode. Instead, the mountain relaxes gradually as matter is transported across magnetic surfaces on the diffusion time-scale, which evaluates to $τ_\mathrm{I} \sim 10^5 - 10^8$ yr (depending on the conductivity of the neutron star crust) for an accreted mass of $M_a = 1.2 \times 10^{-4} M_…
The properties of a new-born neutron star, produced in a core-collapse supernova, can be strongly affected by the possible late fallback which occurs several hours after the explosion. This accretion occurs in the regime dominated by neutrino cooling, explored initially in this context by Chevalier (1989). Here we revisit this approach in a 1D spherically symmetric model and carry out numerical simulations in 2D in an accretion column onto a neutron star considering detailed microphysics, neutrino cooling and the presence of magnetic fields in ideal MHD. We compare our numerical results to the…
The properties of the extremely strong magnetic fields of neutron stars affect in a unique way their evolution and the associated phenomenology. Due to the lack of constraints from direct observations, our understanding of the magnetic field configuration in neutron star interiors depends on the progress in theoretical modelling. Here we discuss the effort in building models of magnetized neutron stars focussing on some of the recent results. In particular, we comment on the instability of purely poloidal and purely toroidal magnetic field configurations and on the evidence in favour of the so…
We obtain the general forms for the current density and the vorticity from the integrability conditions of the basic equations which govern the stationary states of axisymmetric magnetized self-gravitating barotropic objects with meridional flows under the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) approximation. As seen from the stationary condition equations for such bodies, the presence of the meridional flows and that of the poloidal magnetic fields act oppositely on the internal structures. The different actions of these two physical quantities, the meridional flows and the poloidal magnetic fields…
Coalescence of binary neutron stars (BNSs) is one of the sources of gravitational waves (GWs) able to be detected by ground-based interferometric detectors. The event GW170817 was the first observed in the gravitational and electromagnetic spectra, showing through this joint analysis a certain compatibility with the models of short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) to explain the signature of this system. Due to the intense magnetic fields of the neutron stars, the plasma magnetosphere stays strongly magnetized and the propagation of the GW through plasma can excite magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes such…
We report work towards a relativistic formulation for modeling strongly magnetized neutron stars, rotating or in a close circular orbit around another neutron star or black hole, under the approximations of helical symmetry and ideal MHD. The quasi-stationary evolution is governed by the first law of thermodynamics for helically symmetric systems, which is generalized to include magnetic fields. The formulation involves an iterative scheme for solving the Einstein-Maxwell and relativistic MHD-Euler equations numerically. The resulting configurations for binary systems could be used as self-con…
We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) with a new magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model, in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. The previous MHD model (Shi \& Li 2009) is re-examined and the relation between the frequencies of the kHz QPOs and the accretion rate in LMXBs is obtained. Our result agrees with the observations of six sources (4U 0614+09, 4U 1636--53, 4U 1608--52, 4U 1915--15, 4U 1728--34, XTE 1807--294) with measured spins. In this model the kHz QPOs originate from the MHD waves in the compressed magne…
Black hole-torus systems from compact binary mergers are possible engines for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). During the early evolution of the post-merger remnant, the state of the torus is determined by a combination of neutrino cooling and magnetically-driven heating processes, so realistic models must include both effects. In this paper, we study the post-merger evolution of a magnetized black hole-neutron star binary system using the Spectral Einstein Code (SpEC) from an initial post-merger state provided by previous numerical relativity simulations. We use a finite-temperature nuclear equation …
We have performed stability analysis of axisymmetric accretion mounds on neutron stars in High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) by 2-D MHD simulations with the PLUTO MHD code. We find that the mounds are stable with respect to interchange instabilities, but addition of excess mass destabilizes the equilibria. Our simulations confirm that accretion mounds are unstable with respect to MHD instabilities beyond a threshold mass. We investigate both filled and hollow mounds and the for the latter also compute the expected profile of cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSF). In comparison to CRSF fr…
In this work, we investigate the influence of the phase transition and a stiffer fluid in neutron stars' cores on the static equilibrium configuration, dynamical stability, and tidal deformability. For this aim, it is taken into account that the fluid in the core and the envelope follow the relativistic polytropic equation of state. We find that the phase transition and a stiffer fluid in the core will reflect in the total mass, radius, speed of sound, core radius, radial stability with a slow and rapid conversion at the interface, and tidal deformability. We also investigate the dimensionless…
We perform MHD simulations of a thin resistive and viscous accretion disk around a neutron star with the surface dipolar magnetic field of 10$^8$ Gauss. The system evolution is followed during the interval of 500 millisecond pulsar rotations. Matter is accreted through a stable accretion column from the disk onto the star. We also show propagation of the stellar wind through the corona. Analysis of the mass accretion flux and torques on the star shows that the disk reaches the quasi-stationary state.
We investigate the onset of pressure driven toroidal mode instabilities in accretion mounds on neutron stars by 3D MHD simulations using the PLUTO MHD code. Our results confirm that for mounds beyond a threshold mass, instabilities form finger like channels at the periphery, resulting in mass loss from the magnetically confined mound. Ring like mounds with hollow interior show the instabilities at the inner edge as well. We perform the simulations for mounds of different sizes to investigate the effect of the mound mass on the growth rate of the instabilities. We also investigate the effect of…
We investigate new solutions for magnetized neutron stars with a barotropic core in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium and a magneto-elastic crust, which was neglected by previous studies concerning stars in MHD equilibrium. The Lorentz force of the barotropic star is purely irrotational and the structures of magnetic fields are constrained. By contrast, a solenoidal component of the Lorentz force exists in the elastic crust and the structures of the magnetic fields are less restricted. We find that the minor solenoidal component in the elastic crust is important for sustaining the strong m…
The ohmic decay of magnetic fields in the crusts of neutron stars is generally believed to be governed by Hall drift which leads to what is known as a Hall cascade. Here we show that helical and fractionally helical magnetic fields undergo strong inverse cascading like in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), but the magnetic energy decays more slowly with time $t$: $\propto t^{-2/5}$ instead of $\propto t^{-2/3}$ in MHD. Even for a nonhelical magnetic field there is a certain degree of inverse cascading for sufficiently strong magnetic fields. The inertial range scaling with wavenumber $k$ is compatibl…
Giant flares on soft gamma-ray repeaters that are thought to take place on magnetars release enormous energy in a short time interval. Their power can be explained by catastrophic instabilities occurring in the magnetic field configuration and the subsequent magnetic reconnection. By analogy with the coronal mass ejection (CME) events on the Sun, we develop a theoretical model via an analytic approach for magnetar giant flares. In this model, the rotation and/or displacement of the crust causes the field to twist and deform, leading to flux rope formation in the magnetosphere and energy accumu…
We recalculate the modes of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) waves in the MHD model (Shi, Zhang & Li 2014) of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs), in which the compressed magnetosphere is considered. A method on pointby- point scanning for every parameter of a normal LMXBs is proposed to determine the wave number in a NS-LMXB. The dependence of the twin kHz QPO frequencies on accretion rates ( DOt(M) ) is obtained with the wave number and magnetic field (B?) determined by our method. Based on the MHD model, a new explanation of …
In the present paper we consider special classes of massive tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity whose target space metric admits Killing field(s) with a periodic flow. For such tensor-multi-scalar theories we show that there exist mixed configurations of tenor-multi-scalar solitons and relativistic (neutron) stars. The influence of the curvature of the target space on the structure of the mixed configurations is studied for two explicit scalar-tensor theories. The stability of the obtained compact objects is examined and it turns out that the stability region spans to larger central energy…

Pitch-angle scattering rates for cosmic-ray particles in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations with imbalanced turbulence are calculated for fully evolving electromagnetic turbulence. We compare with theoretical predictions derived from the quasilinear theory of cosmic-ray diffusion for an idealized slab spectrum and demonstrate how cross helicity affects the shape of the pitch-angle diffusion coefficient. Additional simulations in evolving magnetic fields or static field configurations provide evidence that the scattering anisotropy in imbalanced turbulence is not primarily due to coherence w…
Long-term ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations in full general relativity are performed for a massive neutron star formed as a remnant of binary neutron star mergers. Neutrino radiation transport effects are taken into account as in our previous papers. The simulation is performed in axial symmetry and without considering dynamo effects as a first step. In the ideal MHD, the differential rotation of the remnant neutron star amplifies the magnetic-field strength by the winding in the presence of a seed poloidal field until the electromagnetic energy reaches $\sim 10\%$ of …
The origin and stability of a thin sheet of plasma in the magnetosphere of an accreting neutron star is investigated. First the radial extension of such a magnetospheric disc is explored. Then a mechanism for magnetospheric accretion is proposed, reconsidering the bending wave explored by Agapitou, Papaloizou & Terquem (1997), that was found to be stable in ideal MHD. We show that this warping becomes unstable and can reach high amplitudes, in a variant of Pringle's radiation-driven model for the warping of AGN accretion discs (Pringle (1996)). Finally we discuss how this mechanism might give …
In this work we analyze hydrostatic equilibrium configurations of neutron stars in a non-minimal geometry-matter coupling (GMC) theory of gravity. We begin with the derivation of the hydrostatic equilibrium equations for the $f(R,L) $ gravity theory, where $R$ and $L$ are the Ricci scalar and Lagrangian of matter, respectively. We assume $f(R,L)=R/2+[1+σR]L$, with $σ$ constant. To describe matter inside neutron stars we assume the polytropic equation of state $p=K ρ^γ$, with $K$ and $γ= 5/3 $ being constants. We show that in this theory it is possible to reach the mass of massive pulsars such …
Magnetic fields are expected to play a key role in the dynamics and the ejection mechanisms that accompany the merger of two neutron stars. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations offer a unique opportunity to unravel the details of the ongoing physical processes. Nevertheless, current numerical studies are severely limited by the fact that any affordable resolution remains insufficient to fully capture the small-scale dynamo, initially triggered by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, and later sourced by several MHD processes involving differential rotation. Here, we alleviat…
In accreting neutron star binaries, matter is channelled by the magnetic fields from the accretion disc to the poles of neutron stars forming an accretion mound. We model such mounds by numerically solving the Grad-Shafranov equation for axisymmetric static MHD equilibria. From our solutions we infer local distortion of field lines due to the weight of accreted matter. Variation in mass loading at the accretion disc will alter the shape of the accretion mound which will also affect the local field distortion. From simulations of cyclotron resonance scattering features from HMXBs, we conclude t…
Code comparisons are a valuable tool for the verification of supernova simulation codes and the quantification of model uncertainties. Here we present a first comparison of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) supernova simulations with the CoCoNuT-FMT and Aenus-Alcar codes, which use distinct methods for treating the MHD induction equation and the neutrino transport. We run two sets of simulations of a rapidly rotating 35M gamma-ray burst progenitor model with different choices for the initial field strength, namely 10^12 G for the maximum poloidal and toroidal field in the strong-field cas…
We propose the mean field dynamo model for the generation of strongest magnetic fields, $B\sim 10^{15}\,{\rm G}$, in a neutron star (NS) accounting for the chiral magnetic effect (CME) driven by the shock in a supernova (SN) progenitor of that NS. The temperature jump at a narrow shock front, where an initial magnetic field existing in inflowing matter rises sharply, is the source of the CME that prevails significantly the erasure of the CME due to the spin-flip through Coulomb collisions in plasma. The growth of the magnetic field just behind the shock given by the instability term $\nabla\ti…
As another step towards understanding the long-term evolution of the magnetic field in neutron stars, we provide the first simulations of ambipolar diffusion in a spherical star. Restricting ourselves to axial symmetry, we consider a charged-particle fluid of protons and electrons carrying the magnetic flux through a motionless, uniform background of neutrons that exerts a collisional drag force on the former. We also ignore the possible impact of beta decays, proton superconductivity, and neutron superfluidity. All initial magnetic field configurations considered are found to evolve on the an…

Three-dimensional, Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) simulations are presented of the interaction between neutron superfluid vortices and proton superconductor flux tubes in a rotating, harmonic trap, representing an idealised model of the outer core of a neutron star. Low-energy states of the neutron condensate are calculated by evolving the GPE in imaginary time in the presence of a prescribed, static, rectilinear flux tube array. The calculations are carried out as a function of the angle between the global magnetic and rotation axes, and the amplitude and sign of the current-current and dens…
