We investigate quantum quenches and the Loschmidt echo in the two dimensional, three band $α-T_3$ model, a close descendant of the dice lattice. By adding a chemical potential to the central site, the integral of the Berry curvature of the bands in different valleys is continously tunable by the ratio of the hopping integrals between the sublattices. By investigating one and two filled bands, we find that dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT), i.e. nonanalytical temporal behaviour in the rate function of the return amplitude, occurs for a certain range of parameters, independent of the band filling. By focusing on the effective low energy description of the model, we find that DQPTs happen not only in the time derivative of the rate function, which is a common feature in two dimensional models, but in the rate function itself. This feature is not related to the change of topological properties of the system during the quench, but rather follows from population inversion for all momenta. This is accompanied by the appearance of dynamical vortices in the time-momentum space of the Pancharatnam geometric phase. The positions of the vortices form an infinite vortex ladder, i.e. a macroscopic phase structure, which allows us to identify the dynamical phases that are separated by the DQPT.
We investigate a generic dynamical theory to characterize topological quantum phases by quantum quenches, and study the emergent topology of quantum dynamics when the quenches start from a deep or shallow trivial phase to topological regimes. Two dynamical schemes are examined: One is to characterize topological phases via quantum dynamics induced by a single quench along an arbitrary axis, and the other applies a sequence of quenches with respect to all (pseudo)spin axes. These two schemes are both built on the so-called dynamical bulk-surface correspondence, which shows that the $d$-dimensio…
We show that the non-equilibrium time-evolution after interaction quenches in the one dimensional, integrable Hubbard model exhibits a dynamical transition in the half-filled case. This transition ceases to exist upon doping. Our study is based on systematically extended equations of motion. Thus it is controlled for small and moderate times; no relaxation effects are neglected. Remarkable similarities to the quench dynamics in the infinite dimensional Hubbard model are found suggesting dynamical transitions to be a general feature of quenches in such models.
A long-lived prethermal state may emerge upon a sudden quench of a quantum system. In this paper, we study a quantum quench of an initial {\it critical} state, and show that the resulting prethermal state exhibits a genuinely quantum and dynamical universal behavior. Specifically, we consider a scenario where the "speed of light" characterizing the propagation of local perturbations is suddenly quenched at criticality. We also find that the system approaches the prethermal state in a universal way described by a new exponent that characterizes a kind of quantum aging.
We report on the dynamical formation of exceptional degeneracies in basic correlation functions of non-integrable one- and two-dimensional systems quenched to the vicinity of a critical point. Remarkably, fine-tuned semi-metallic points in the phase diagram of the considered systems are thereby promoted to topologically robust non-Hermitian (NH) nodal phases emerging in the coherent long-time evolution of a dynamically equilibrating system. In the framework of non-equilibrium Green's function methods within the conserving second Born approximation, we predict observable signatures of these nov…
We study the quench dynamics of a one-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas in an optical lattice potential with synthetic spin-orbit coupling. At equilibrium, the ground state of the system can undergo a topological phase transition and become a topological superfluid with Majorana edge states. As the interaction is quenched near the topological phase boundary, we identify an interesting dynamical phase transition of the quenched state in the long-time limit, characterized by an abrupt change of the pairing gap at a critical quenched interaction strength. We further demonstrate the topological natu…
We investigate the dynamical effects of a magnetic flux quench in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in a one-dimensional ring geometry. We show that, even when the system is initially in the half-filled insulating state, the flux quench induces a time-dependent current that eventually reaches a finite stationary value. Such persistent current, which exists also in the thermodynamic limit, cannot be captured by the linear response theory and is the hallmark of nonlinear dynamical effects occurring in the presence of dimerization. Moreover, we show that, for a range of values of dimerization streng…
In this article, a method is proposed to spatially scale up a trapped ultracold gas while conserving the quantum correlations of the initial many-body state. For systems supporting self-similar dynamics, this is achieved by implementing a many-body finite-time frictionless quantum quench of the harmonic trap which acts as a quantum dynamical microscope.
We study the off-equilibrium dynamics of the infinite dimensional Bose Hubbard Model after a quantum quench. The dynamics can be analyzed exactly by mapping it to an effective Newtonian evolution. For integer filling, we find a dynamical transition separating regimes of small and large quantum quenches starting from the superfluid state. This transition is very similar to the one found for the fermionic Hubbard model by mean field approximations.
Several mean-field computations have revealed the existence of an out of equilibrium dynamical transition induced by quantum quenching an isolated system starting from its symmetry broken phase. In this work we focus on the quantum phi^4 N-component field theory. By taking into account dynamical fluctuations at the Hartree-Fock level, corresponding to the leading order of the 1/N expansion, we derive the critical properties of the dynamical transition beyond mean-field theory (including at finite temperature). We find diverging time and length-scales, dynamic scaling and aging. Finally, we unv…
The correlated non-equilibrium quantum dynamics following a multiple interaction quench protocol for few-bosonic ensembles confined in finite optical lattices is investigated. The quenches give rise to an interwell tunneling and excite the cradle and a breathing mode. Several tunneling pathways open during the time interval of increased interactions, while only a few occur when the system is quenched back to its original interaction strength. The cradle mode, however, persists during and in between the quenches, while the breathing mode possesses dinstinct frequencies. The occupation of excite…
We investigate the non-equilibrium behavior of a fully-connected (or all-to-all coupled) Bose-Hubbard model after a Mott to superfluid quench, in the limit of large boson densities and for an arbitrary number $V$ of lattice sites, with potential relevance in experiments ranging from cold atoms to superconducting qubits. By means of the truncated Wigner approximation, we predict that crossing a critical quench strength the system undergoes a dynamical phase transition between two regimes that are characterized at long times either by an inhomogeneous population of the lattice (i.e. macroscopica…
We study the dynamical evolution of a two-dimensional Bose gas after a disorder potential quench. Depending on the initial conditions, the system evolves either to a thermal or a superfluid state. Using extensive quasi-exact numerical simulations, we show that the two phases are separated by a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The thermalization time is shown to be longer in the superfluid phase, but no critical slowing down is observed at the transition. The long-time phase diagram is well reproduced by a simple theoretical model. The spontaneous emergence of Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions fol…
We study the quench dynamics on cross-stitch flat band networks by a sudden change of the inter-cell hopping strength $J$. For quench processes with $J$ changing as $J=0\rightarrow J\neq0$, we give the analytical expression to the Loschmidt echo which possesses a series of zero points at critical times $t^{*}$, indicating where the dynamical quantum phase transitions occur. We further study the converse quench process with $J\neq0\rightarrow J=0$, and find a non-trivial example that the pre-quench quantum state is not an eigenstate of the post-quench Hamiltonian, whereas the Loschmidt echo $\m…
The spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas provides a totally new platform to realize topological superfluids and related topological excitations. Previous studies have mainly focused on the properties of the ground state. Here we consider a two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling subject to a perpendicular Zeeman field. For this system, we have found that its ground state topological structure is captured by the spin texture, which is readily measurable in experiments. We show that, when the Zeeman field is suddenly quenched, dynamical topological phases can be realized. Mo…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) represent a counterpart in non-equilibrium quantum time evolution of thermal phase transitions at equilibrium, where real time becomes analogous to a control parameter such as temperature. In quenched quantum systems, recently the occurrence of DQPTs has been demonstrated, both with theory and experiment, to be intimately connected to changes of topological properties. Here, we contribute to broadening the systematic understanding of this relation between topology and DQPTs to multi-orbital and disordered systems. Specifically, we provide a detailed …
In this work we revisit collapse and revival oscillations in superfluids suddenly quenched by strong local interactions for the case of a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. As the main result we identify the inherent nonequilibrium quantum many-body character of these oscillations by revealing that they are controlled by a sequence of underlying dynamical quantum phase transitions in the real-time evolution after the quench, which manifest as temporal nonanalyticities in return probabilities or Loschmidt echos. Specifically, we find that the time scale of the collapse and revival oscillations…
We present a numerical study of the Higgs mode in an ultracold confined Fermi gas after an interaction quench and find a dynamical vanishing of the superfluid order parameter. Our calculations are done within a microscopic density-matrix approach in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes framework which takes the three-dimensional cigar-shaped confinement explicitly into account. In this framework, we study the amplitude mode of the order parameter after interaction quenches starting on the BCS side of the BEC-BCS crossover close to the transition and ending in the BCS regime. We demonstrate the emergence o…
We develop a generic method to compute the dynamics induced by quenches in completely connected quantum systems. These models are expected to provide a mean-field description at least of the short time dynamics of finite dimensional system. We apply our method to the Bose-Hubbard model, to a generalized Jaynes-Cummings model, and to the Ising model in a transverse field. We find that the quantum evolution can be mapped onto a classical effective dynamics, which involves only a few intensive observables. For some special parameters of the quench, peculiar dynamical transitions occur. They resul…
The formation of an equilibrium quantum state from an uncorrelated thermal one through the dynamical crossing of a phase transition is a central question of non-equilibrium many-body physics. During such crossing, the system breaks its symmetry by establishing numerous uncorrelated regions separated by spontaneously-generated defects, whose emergence obeys a universal scaling law with the quench duration. Much less is known about the ensuing re-equilibrating or "coarse-graining" stage, which is governed by the evolution and interactions of such defects under system-specific and external constr…
Recent experiments began to explore the topological properties of quench dynamics, i.e. the time evolution following a sudden change in the Hamiltonian, via tomography of quantum gases in optical lattices. In contrast to the well established theory for static band insulators or periodically driven systems, at present it is not clear whether, and how, topological invariants can be defined for a general quench of band insulators. Previous work solved a special case of this problem beautifully using Hopf mapping of two-band Hamiltonians in two dimensions. But it only works for topologically trivi…
We study the effect of strong disorder on topology and entanglement in quench dynamics. Although disorder-induced topological phases have been well studied in equilibrium, the disorder-induced topology in quench dynamics has not been explored. In this work, we predict a disorder-induced topology of post-quench states characterized by the quantized dynamical Chern number and the crossings in the entanglement spectrum in $(1+1)$ dimensions. The dynamical Chern number undergoes transitions from zero to unity, and back to zero when increasing the disorder strength. The boundaries between different…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are topologically characterized in quantum quench dynamics in topological systems. In this paper, we study Loschmidt amplitudes and DQPTs in quantum quenches in mirror-symmetric topological phases. Based on the topological classification of mirror-symmetric insulators, we show that mirror symmetry creates symmetry-protected DQPTs. If mirror symmetry is present, topologically robust DQPTs can occur in quantum quenches, even in high-dimensional time-reversal invariant systems. Then, we also show that symmetry-protected DQPTs occur in quenches in two-di…
We study the phase ordering dynamics of a uniform Bose gas in two dimensions following a quench into the ordered phase. We explore the crossover between dissipative and conservative evolution by performing numerical simulations within the classical field methodology. Regardless of the dissipation strength, we find clear evidence for universal scaling, with dynamical critical exponent $z$ characterising the growth of the correlation length. In the dissipative limit we find growth consistent with the logarithmically corrected law $[t/\log(t/t_0)]^{1/z}$, and exponent $z=2$, in agreement with pre…
In an equilibrium three-dimensional (3D) disordered condensate, it's well established that disorder can generate an amount of normal fluid equaling to $\frac{4}{3}$ of the condensate depletion. The concept that the superfluid is more volatile to the existence of disorder than the condensate is crucial to the understanding of Bose glass phase. In this Letter, we show that, by bringing a weakly disordered 3D condensate to nonequilibrium regime via a quantum quench in the interaction, disorder can destroy superfluid significantly more, leading to a steady state in which the normal fluid density f…
We analytically and numerically study the Loschmidt echo and the dynamical order parameters in a spin chain with a deconfined phase transition between a dimerized state and a ferromagnetic phase. For quenches from a dimerized state to a ferromagnetic phase, we find that the model can exhibit a dynamical quantum phase transition characterized by an associating dimerized order parameters. In particular, when quenching the system from the Majumdar-Ghosh state to the ferromagnetic Ising state, we find an exact mapping into the classical Ising chain for a quench from the paramagnetic phase to the c…
We formulate dynamical phase transitions in subsystems embedded in larger quantum systems. Introducing the entanglement echo as an overlap of the initial and instantaneous entanglement ground states, we show its analytic structure after a quench provides natural definition of dynamical phase transitions in the subsystem. These transitions come in two varieties, the entanglement-type transitions and the bulk-type Loschmidt transitions. The entanglement-type transitions arise from periodic reorganization of quantum correlations between the subsystem and its environment, manifesting in instantane…
Motivated by recent experimental progress in the study of quantum systems far from equilibrium, we investigate the relation between several dynamical signatures of topology in the coherent time-evolution after a quantum quench. Specifically, we study the conditions for the appearance of entanglement spectrum crossings, dynamical quantum phase transitions, and dynamical Chern numbers. For non-interacting models, we show that in general there is no direct relation between these three quantities. Instead, we relate the presence of level crossings in the entanglement spectrum to localized boundary…
We study the dynamics of a two-dimensional Bose gas after an instantaneous quench of an initially ultracold thermal atomic gas across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, confirming via stochastic simulations that the system undergoes phase ordering kinetics and fulfills dynamical scaling hypothesis at late-time dynamics. Specifically, we find in that regime the vortex number decaying in time as $\langle N_v \propto t^{-1}\rangle$, consistent with a dynamical critical exponent $z \approx 2$ for both temperature and interaction quenches. Focusing on finite-size box-like geometr…

In this work we numerically investigate the fate of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in the presence of quenched phase under Peierls substitution using time-dependent real space and momentum space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation methods and Anderson pseudospin representation method. This kind of phase imprint can be realized by modulating electric field in ultracold atoms and illumining of THz optical pump pulse in solids with conventional and unconventional superconductors. In the case of weak phase imprint, the BCS pairing is stable; while in the strong phase imprint, instability to…
Thermalization of isolated quantum systems is a long-standing fundamental problem where different mechanisms are proposed over time. We contribute to this discussion by classifying the diverse quench dynamical behaviours of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, which includes well-defined quantum collapse and revivals, thermalization, and certain special cases. These special cases are either nonthermal equilibration with no revival but a collapse even though the system has finite degrees of freedom or no equilibration with no collapse and revival. Given that some integrable systems are already sho…
Using a Fermi-Bose mixture of ultra-cold atoms in an optical lattice, we construct a quantum simulator for a U(1) gauge theory coupled to fermionic matter. The construction is based on quantum links which realize continuous gauge symmetry with discrete quantum variables. At low energies, quantum link models with staggered fermions emerge from a Hubbard-type model which can be quantum simulated. This allows us to investigate string breaking as well as the real-time evolution after a quench in gauge theories, which are inaccessible to classical simulation methods.
The exact description of the time evolution of open correlated quantum systems remains one of the major challenges of the condensed matter theory, specially for asymptotic long times where most numerical methods fail. Here, the post-quench dynamics of the $N$-component Bose-Anderson impurity model is studied in the $N\to\infty$ limit. The equilibrium phase diagram is similar to that of the Bose-Hubbard model in that it contains local versions of the Mott and Bose phases. Using a numerically exact procedure we are able to study the real time evolution including asymptotic long time regimes. The…
We study the dynamics arising from a double quantum quench where the parameters of a given Hamiltonian are abruptly changed from being in an equilibrium phase A to a different phase B and back (A$\to$B$\to$A). As prototype models, we consider the (integrable) transverse field Ising as well as the (non-integrable) ANNNI model. The return amplitude features non-analyticities after the first quench through the equilibrium quantum critical point (A$\to$B), which is routinely taken as a signature of passing through a so-called dynamical quantum phase transition. We demonstrate that non-analyticitie…
In quenching a topological phase across phase transition, the dynamical bulk-surface correspondence emerges that the bulk topology of $d$-dimensional ($d$D) phase relates to the nontrivial pattern of quench dynamics emerging on $(d-1)$D subspace, called band inversion surfaces (BISs) in momentum space. Here we report the first experimental observation of the dynamical bulk-surface correspondence through measuring the topological charges in a 2D quantum anomalous Hall model realized in an optical Raman lattice. The system can be quenched with respect to every spin axis by suddenly varying the t…
We report dynamical quantum phase transition portrait in the alternating field transverse XY spin chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by investigating singularities in the Loschmidt echo and the corresponding rate function after a sudden quench of system parameters. Unlike the Ising model, the analysis of Loschmidt echo yields non-uniformly spaced transition times in this model. Comparative study between the equilibrium and the dynamical quantum phase transitions in this case reveals that there are quenches where one occurs without the other, and the regimes where they co-exist. Howev…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of an isolated quantum system after a sudden quench to a dynamical critical point is expected to be characterized by scaling and universal exponents due to the absence of time scales. We explore these features for a quench of the parameters of a Hamiltonian with $O(N)$ symmetry, starting from a ground state in the disordered phase. In the limit of infinite $N$, the exponents and scaling forms of the relevant two-time correlation functions can be calculated exactly. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by the numerical solution of the corresponding equations. Mo…
When a quantum system is quenched from its ground state, the time evolution can lead to non-analytic behavior in the return rate at critical times $t_c$. Such dynamical phase transitions (DPT's) can occur, in particular, for quenches between phases with different topological properties in Gaussian models. In this paper we discuss Loschmidt echos generalized to density matrices and obtain results for quenches in closed Gaussian models at finite temperatures as well as for open system dynamics described by a Lindblad master equation. While cusps in the return rate are always smoothed out by fini…
