We study an inhomogeneous random connection model in the connectivity regime. The vertex set of the graph is a homogeneous Poisson point process $\mathcal{P}_s$ of intensity $s>0$ on the unit cube $S=\left(-\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right]^{d},$ $d \geq 2$ . Each vertex is endowed with an independent random weight distributed as $W$, where $P(W>w)=w^{-β}1_{[1,\infty)}(w)$, $β>0$. Given the vertex set and the weights an edge exists between $x,y\in \mathcal{P}_s$ with probability $\left(1 - \exp\left( - \frac{ηW_xW_y}{\left(d(x,y)/r\right)^α} \right)\right),$ independent of everything else, where $η, α> 0$, $d(\cdot, \cdot)$ is the toroidal metric on $S$ and $r > 0$ is a scaling parameter. We derive conditions on $α, β$ such that under the scaling $r_s(ξ)^d= \frac{1}{c_0 s} \left( \log s +(k-1) \log\log s +ξ+\log\left(\frac{αβ}{k!d} \right)\right),$ $ξ\in \mathbb{R}$, the number of vertices of degree $k$ converges in total variation distance to a Poisson random variable with mean $e^{-ξ}$ as $s \to \infty$, where $c_0$ is an explicitly specified constant that depends on $α, β, d$ and $η$ but not on $k$. In particular, for $k=0$ we obtain the regime in which the number of isolated nodes stabilizes, a precursor to establishing a threshold for connectivity. We also derive a sufficient condition for the graph to be connected with high probability for large $s$. The Poisson approximation result is derived using the Stein's method.
For a measure mu supported on a compact connected subset of a Euclidean space which satisfies a uniform d-dimensional decay of the volume of balls we show that the maximal edge in the minimum spanning tree of n indepndent samples from mu is, with high probability (log n/n)^(1/d).
We introduce a new way to sample inhomogeneous random graphs designed to have a lot of flexibility in the assignment of the degree sequence and the individual edge probabilities while remaining tractable. To achieve this we run a Poisson point process over the square $[0,1]^2$, with an intensity proportional to a kernel $W(x,y)$ and identify every couple of vertices of the graph with a subset of the square, adding an edge between them if there is a point in such subset. This ensures unconditional independence among edges and makes many statements much easier to prove in this setting than in ot…
The objective of this study is to examine the asymptotic behavior of Betti numbers of Čech complexes treated as stochastic processes and formed from random points in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$. We consider the case where the points of the Čech complex are generated by a Poisson process with intensity $nf$ for a probability density $f$. We look at the cases where the behavior of the connectivity radius of Čech complex causes simplices of dimension greater than $k+1$ to vanish in probability, the so-called sparse and Poisson regimes, as well when the connectivity radius i…
We consider a class of point processes (pp), which we call {\em sub-Poisson}; these are pp that can be directionally-convexly ($dcx$) dominated by some Poisson pp. The $dcx$ order has already been shown useful in comparing various point process characteristics, including Ripley's and correlation functions as well as shot-noise fields generated by pp, indicating in particular that smaller in the $dcx$ order processes exhibit more regularity (less clustering, less voids) in the repartition of their points. Using these results, in this paper we study the impact of the $dcx$ ordering of pp on the …
We propose an algorithm for the closed-form recursive computation of joint moments and cumulants of all orders for k-hop counts in the 1D unit disk random graph model with Poisson distributed vertices. Our approach uses decompositions of k-hop counts into multiple Poisson stochastic integrals. As a consequence, using the Stein method we derive Berry-Esseen bounds for the asymptotic convergence of renormalized k-hop path counts to the normal distribution as the density of Poisson vertices tends to infinity. Computer codes for the recursive symbolic computation of moments and cumulants are provi…
Given two independent Poisson point processes $Φ^{(1)},Φ^{(2)}$ in $R^d$, the continuum AB percolation model is the graph with points of $Φ^{(1)}$ as vertices and with edges between any pair of points for which the intersection of balls of radius $2r$ centred at these points contains at least one point of $Φ^{(2)}$. This is a generalization of the $AB$ percolation model on discrete lattices. We show the existence of percolation for all $d > 1$ and derive bounds for a critical intensity. We also provide a characterization for this critical intensity when $d = 2$. To study the connectivity probl…
The random connection model is a random graph whose vertices are given by the points of a Poisson process and whose edges are obtained by randomly connecting pairs of Poisson points in a position dependent but independent way. We study first and second order properties of the numbers of components isomorphic to given finite connected graphs. For increasing observation windows in an Euclidean setting we prove qualitative multivariate and quantitative univariate central limit theorems for these component counts as well as a qualitative central limit theorem for the total number of finite compone…
Consider a dynamic random geometric social network identified by $s_t$ independent points $x_t^1,\ldots,x_t^{s_t}$ in the unit square $[0,1]^2$ that interact in continuous time $t\geq 0$. The generative model of the random points is a Poisson point measures. Each point $x_t^i$ can be active or not in the network with a Bernoulli probability $p$. Each pair being connected by affinity thanks to a step connection function if the interpoint distance $\|x_t^i-x_t^j\|\leq a_\mathsf{f}^\star$ for any $i\neq j$. We prove that when $a_\mathsf{f}^\star=\sqrt{\frac{(s_t)^{l-1}}{pπ}}$ for $l\in(0,1)$, the…
We consider a fractional counting process with jumps of amplitude $1,2,\ldots,k$, with $k\in \mathbb{N}$, whose probabilities satisfy a suitable system of fractional difference-differential equations. We obtain the moment generating function and the probability law of the resulting process in terms of generalized Mittag-Leffler functions. We also discuss two equivalent representations both in terms of a compound fractional Poisson process and of a subordinator governed by a suitable fractional Cauchy problem. The first occurrence time of a jump of fixed amplitude is proved to have the same dis…
This paper introduces a generalization of the so-called space-fractional Poisson process by extending the difference operator acting on state space present in the associated difference-differential equations to a much more general form. It turns out that this generalization can be put in relation to a specific subordination of a homogeneous Poisson process by means of a subordinator for which it is possible to express the characterizing Lévy measure explicitly. Moreover, the law of this subordinator solves a one-sided first-order differential equation in which a particular convolution-type int…
We consider connectivity properties of the Branching Interlacements model in $\mathbb{Z}^d,~d\ge5$, recently introduced by Angel, Ráth and Zhu in 2016. Using stochastic dimension techniques we show that every two vertices visited by the branching interlacements are connected via at most $\lceil d/4\rceil$ conditioned critical branching random walks from the underlying Poisson process, and that this upper bound is sharp. In particular every such two branching random walks intersect if and only if $5\le d\le 8$. The stochastic dimension of branching random walk result is of independent interest.…
We study the homology of random Čech complexes generated by a homogeneous Poisson process. We focus on 'homological connectivity' - the stage where the random complex is dense enough, so that its homology "stabilizes" and becomes isomorphic to that of the underlying topological space. Our results form a comprehensive high-dimensional analogue of well-known phenomena related to connectivity in the Erdős-Rényi graph and random geometric graphs. We first prove that there is a sharp phase transition describing homological connectivity. Next, we analyze the behavior of the complex in the critical w…
We consider a semi-scale invariant version of the Poisson cylinder model which in a natural way induces a random fractal set. We show that this random fractal exhibits an existence phase transition for any dimension $d\geq 2,$ and a connectivity phase transition whenever $d\geq 4.$ We determine the exact value of the critical point of the existence phase transition, and we show that the fractal set is almost surely empty at this critical point. A key ingredient when analysing the connectivity phase transition is to consider a restriction of the full process onto a subspace. We show that this r…
Let S_{n,k} denote the random geometric graph obtained by placing points inside a square of area n according to a Poisson point process of intensity 1 and joining each such point to the k=k(n) points of the process nearest to it. In this paper we show that if Pr(S_{n,k} connected) > n^{-γ_1} then the probability that S_{n,k} contains a pair of `small' components `close' to each other is o(n^{-c_1}) (in a precise sense of `small' and 'close'), for some absolute constants γ_1>0 and c_1 >0. This answers a question of Walters. (A similar result was independently obtained by Balister.) As an applic…
Consider a graph on $n$ uniform random points in the unit square, each pair being connected by an edge with probability $p$ if the inter-point distance is at most $r$. We show that as $n\to\infty$ the probability of full connectivity is governed by that of having no isolated vertices, itself governed by a Poisson approximation for the number of isolated vertices, uniformly over all choices of $p,r$. We determine the asymptotic probability of connectivity for all $(p_n,r_n)$ subject to $r_n=O(n^{-\varepsilon})$, some $\varepsilon >0$. We generalize the first result to higher dimensions and to a…
Random geometric graphs consist of randomly distributed nodes (points), with pairs of nodes within a given mutual distance linked. In the usual model the distribution of nodes is uniform on a square, and in the limit of infinitely many nodes and shrinking linking range, the number of isolated nodes is Poisson distributed, and the probability of no isolated nodes is equal to the probability the whole graph is connected. Here we examine these properties for several self-similar node distributions, including smooth and fractal, uniform and nonuniform, and finitely ramified or otherwise. We show t…
In this paper, we study one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equation with jump under logarithmic growth assumption in the z-variable (|z|\sqrt{|\ln|z|}|) and an L^p terminal value (for a suitable p>2). We show the existence and the uniqueness of the solution when the noise is driven by a Brownian motion and an independent Poisson random measure. In addition, we highlight the connection of such BSDEs with stochastic optimal control problem, where we show the existence of an optimal strategy for the stochastic control problem.
We consider random graphs with uniformly bounded edges on a Poisson point process conditioned to contain the origin. In particular we focus on the random connection model, the Boolean model and Miller-Abrahams random resistor network with lower-bounded conductances. The latter is relevant for the analysis of conductivity by Mott variable range hopping in strongly disordered systems. By using the method of randomized algorithms developed by Duminil-Copin et al. we prove that in the subcritical phase the probability that the origin is connected to some point at distance $n$ decays exponentially …
Since the seminal work by Nagel and Weiss, the iteration stable (STIT) tessellations have attracted considerable interest in stochastic geometry as a natural and flexible, yet analytically tractable model for hierarchical spatial cell-splitting and crack-formation processes. We provide in this paper a fundamental link between typical characteristics of STIT tessellations and those of suitable mixtures of Poisson hyperplane tessellations using martingale techniques and general theory of piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMPs). As applications, new mean values and new distributional res…
In this paper, we compute the expected number of vehicles with at least one two-hop path to a fixed roadside unit (RSU) in a multi-hop, one-dimensional vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) where other cars can act as relays. The pairwise channels experience Rayleigh fading in the random connection model, and so exist, with a probability given by a function of the mutual distance between the cars, or between the cars and the RSU. We derive exact expressions for the expected number of cars with a two-hop connection to the RSU when the car density $ρ$ tends to zero and infinity, and determine its beh…
The fundamental group of the $2$-dimensional Linial-Meshulam random simplicial complex $Y_2(n,p)$ was first studied by Babson, Hoffman and Kahle. They proved that the threshold probability for simple connectivity of $Y_2(n,p)$ is about $p\approx n^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we show that this threshold probability is at most $p\le (γn)^{-1/2}$, where $γ= 4^4/3^3$, and conjecture that this threshold is sharp. In fact, we show that $p=(γn)^{-1/2}$ is a sharp threshold probability for the stronger property that every cycle of length $3$ is the boundary of a subcomplex of $Y_2(n,p)$ that is homeomorph…
