Complex plasma mixtures with three or more components are often encountered in astrophysics or in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. For mixtures containing species with large differences in atomic number Z, the modeling needs to consider at the same time the kinetic theory for low-Z elements combined with the theory of strongly coupled plasma for high-Z elements, as well as all the intermediate situations that can appear in multi-component systems. For such cases, we study the pair distribution functions, self-diffusions, mutual diffusion and viscosity for ternary mixtures at extreme conditions. These quantities can be produced from first principles using orbital free molecular dynamics at the computational expense of very intensive simulations to reach good statistics. Utilizing the first-principles results as reference data, we assess the merit of a global analytic model for transport coefficients, Pseudo-Ions in Jellium (PIJ), based on an iso-electronic assumption ( iso-n e ). With a multi-component hypernetted-chain integral equation, we verify the quality of the iso-n e prescription for describing the static structure of the mixtures. This semi-analytical modeling compares well with the simulation results and allows one to consider plasma mixtures not accessible to simulations. Applications are given for the mix of materials in ICF experiments. A reduction of a multicomponent mixture to an effective binary mixture is also established in the hydrodynamic limit and compared with PIJ estimations for ICF relevant mixtures.
Theoretical modelling of ionization potential depression and the related ionization equilibrium in dense plasmas, in particular in warm/hot dense matter, represents a significant challenge due to ionic coupling and electronic degeneracy effects. We present a quantum statistical model based on dynamical structure factors for the ionization potential depression, where quantum exchange and dynamical correlation effects in plasma environments are consistently and systematically taken into account in terms of the concept of self-energy. Under the condition of local thermodynamic equilibrium, the ch…

M. More,Phys.
Transport properties of the ionic component of dense plasmas are investigated on the basis of effective potentials taking into account the presence of an external alternating electrical (laser) field. The latter generates single particle oscillations of electrons and significantly changes the screening of the test charge in plasma. Therefore, transport coefficients become non-monotonic function of the oscillation frequency. The results for the diffusion and viscosity coefficients are presented. These transport coefficients are computed using the generalized Coulomb logarithm within the Chapman…
The dynamical structure factor (DSF) of strongly coupled ions in dense plasmas with partially and strongly degenerate electrons is investigated. The main focus is on the impact of electronic correlations (non-ideality) on the ionic DSF. The latter is computed by carrying out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with a screened ion-ion interaction potential. The electronic screening is taken into account by invoking the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjölander approximation, and compared to the MD simulation data obtained considering the electronic screening in the random phase approximation and using the Yuk…
Phase diagrams of fully ionized binary ionic mixtures are considered within the framework of the linear mixing formalism taking into account recent advances in understanding quantum one-component plasma thermodynamics. We have followed a transformation of azeotropic phase diagrams into peritectic and eutectic types with increase of the charge ratio. For solid $^{12}$C/$^{16}$O and $^{16}$O/$^{20}$Ne mixtures, we have found extensive miscibility gaps. Their appearance seems to be a robust feature of the theory. The gaps evolve naturally into two-solid regions of eutectic phase diagrams at highe…
The idea of using a gas-mixture comprising atoms with high mass number in order to increase proton energies in laser induced plasma acceleration at under critical density is investigated by means of 2D PIC (Particle-In-Cell) simulations. Comparing and discussing the case of a pure hydrogen plasma, and that of a plasma containing higher mass number species with a small percentage of hydrogen, we demonstrated that the mixture enhances the energies of the accelerated protons. We also show that using a gas-mixture introduces the possibility of using the densities ratio to change the relative accel…
In this article we report acceleration observed for ions in a forward ablation geometry of 50 nm thick nickel film coated on a glass plate under nanosecond laser ablation. A detailed study with varying background pressure and laser energy of time of flight (TOF) spectra of ionic and other neutral transitions from plasma is undertaken. The results indicate that TOF spectra recorded for different neutral transitions exhibit different dynamical behavior (the slower peak of the neutral emission becomes faster with background pressure). Similar observation is seen for the ionic species as well. The…
A new model for the electrical conductivity of dense plasmas with a mixture of ion species, containing no adjustable parameters, is presented. The model takes the temperature, mass density and relative abundances of the species as input. It takes into account partial ionization, ionic structure, and core-valence orthogonality, and uses quantum mechanical calculations of cross sections. Comparison to an existing high fidelity but computationally expensive method reveals good agreement. The new model is computationally efficient and can reach high temperatures. A new mixing rule is also presente…
Composition analysis of LiF-C thin film for neutral and ionic contributions in Front Ablation (FA) and Back Ablation (BA) geometries in vacuum and 2\times10-1 mbar argon has been done. Temporal evolution of ionic to neutral ratio and neutral abundance for both the geometries has been estimated. For neutral abundance, two approaches viz Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) analysis as well as integrated intensity ratio of Li I 670.1 nm and Li I 610.3 nm lines assuming LTE conditions are explored. The present attempt will be interesting from the view point of understanding the evolution of …

Based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurements of the spatially averaged and peak helium metastable atom densities in a capacitively coupled micro atmospheric pressure plasma jet operated in He/N$_2$ mixtures, the energy efficiency of metastable species (He-I 2$^3$S$_1$) generation is compared for three different scenarios: single frequency operation at (i) 13.56 MHz and (ii) 54.12 MHz, and Voltage Waveform Tailoring (VWT) at (iii) "valleys"-waveforms synthesized from four consecutive harmonics of 13.56 MHz. For each case, the dissipated power is measured based on a …
A zero-dimensional (volume-averaged) and a pseudo-one-dimensional (plug-flow) model are developed to investigate atmospheric-pressure plasma jet devices operated with He, He/O$_2$, He/N$_2$ and He/N$_2$/O$_2$ mixtures. The models are coupled with the Boltzmann equation under the two-term approximation to self-consistently calculate the electron energy distribution function (EEDF). The simulation results are verified against spatially resolved model calculations and validated against a wide variety of measurement data. The nitric oxide (NO) concentration is thoroughly characterized for a variat…
Ultracold plasmas are a promising candidate for the creation of strongly-coupled Coulomb systems. Unfortunately, the values of the coupling parameter Gamma_e actually achieved after photoionization of the neutral atoms remain relatively small because of the considerable intrinsic heating of the electrons. A conceivable way to get around this obstacle might be to utilize a spontaneous ionization of the ultracold Rydberg gas, where the initial kinetic energies could be much less. However, the spontaneous avalanche ionization will result in a very inhomogeneous distribution (clusterization) of th…
The dynamic electron-ion collisions play an important rolein determining the static and transport properties of warmdense matter (WDM). Electron force field (eFF) method is applied to study the ionic transport properties of warm densehydrogen. Compared with the results from quantum moleculardynamics and orbital-free molecular dynamics, the ionicdiffusions are largely reduced by involving the dynamic collisions of electrons and ions. This physics is verified by quantum Langevin molecular dynamics (QLMD) simulations, which includes electron-ion collisions induced friction(EI-CIF) into the dynami…
It is shown that a small contamination of a relativistically hot electron component can induce a new scale (for structure formation) to a system consisting of an ion-degenerate electron plasma. Mathematically expression of this additional scale length is the increase in the index of quasi-equilibrium Beltrami-Bernoulli states that have been invoked to model several astrophysical systems of interest. The two species of electrons, due to different origin of their relativistic effective masses, behave as two distinct components (each with its own conserved helicity) and add to the richness of the…
Diffusion coefficients are essential microphysics input for modeling white dwarf evolution, as they impact phase separation at crystallization and sedimentary heat sources. Present schemes for computing diffusion coefficients are accurate at weak coupling ($Γ\ll 1$), but they have errors as large as a factor of two in the strongly coupled liquid regime ($1 \lesssim Γ\lesssim 200$). With modern molecular dynamics codes it is possible to accurately determine diffusion coefficients in select systems with percent-level precision. In this work, we develop a theoretically motivated law for diffusion…
Plasma dynamics critically depends on density and temperature, thus well-controlled experimental realizations are essential benchmarks for theoretical models. The formation of an ultracold plasma can be triggered by ionizing a tunable number of atoms in a micrometer-sized volume of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by a single femtosecond laser pulse. The large density combined with the extremely low temperature of the BEC give rise to an initially strongly coupled plasma in a so far unexplored regime bridging ultracold neutral plasma and ionized nanoclusters. Here, we report on ultrafast cooli…
