If one analyses the quantum creation of the universe, it turns out that the most natural way in which the universes can be created is in pairs of universes whose time flow is reversely related. It means that the matter that propagates in one of the universes can be seen, from the point of view of the other universe, as antimatter, and viceversa. They thus form a universe-antiuniverse pair. From a global point of view, i.e. from the point of view of the whole multiverse ensemble, the creation of universes in universe-antiuniverse pairs restores the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in each individual universe and it might provide us with distinguishable imprints of the whole multiverse proposal.
Within the third quantisation formalism, we find solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt in terms of two sets of modes that can be identified with the Hartle-Hawking's no boundary condition and with the Vilenkin's tunneling boundary condition, respectively. The two sets of modes are related by a Bogolyubov transformation so the no boundary vacuum state turns out to be equivalent to a thermal distribution of tunnelling positive and negative modes representing, in a relative sense, universes and antiuniverses
The classical evolution of the universe can be seen as a parametrised worldline of the minisuperspace, with the time variable $t$ the parameter that parametrises the worldline. The time reversal symmetry of the field equations implies that for any positive oriented solution there can be a symmetric negative oriented one that, in terms of the same time variable, represent an expanding and a contracting universe, respectively. However, the choice of the time variable induced by the correct value of the Schrödinger equation in the two universes makes that their physical time variables could be re…
In the present article we point out a conceptual issue of the Third Quantization formalism for Canonical Quantum Gravity. Based on earlier results on interuniversal entanglement, the picture of noninteracting universe-antiuniverse pairs is incomplete. In particular, the variation of the entanglement entropy with the scale factor, understood as a measure of time, implies either an interaction between pairs of universes or universes with a heat bath, i.e. an external field. We propose a simple solution to the problem by adding a new quantum field to the formalism. Correspondingly, particles of t…
We review the canonical quantisation of the geometry of the spacetime in the cases of a simply and a non-simply connected manifold. In the former, we analyse the information contained in the solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and interpret them in terms of the customary boundary conditions that are typically imposed on the semiclassical wave functions. In particular, we review three different paradigms for the quantum creation of a homogeneous and isotropic universe. For the quantisation of a non-simply connected manifold the best framework is the so-called third quantisation formalism, …
In the present article we analyze the phenomenon of particle creation in a cosmological anisotropic universe when a constant electric field is present. We compute, via the Bogoliubov transformations, the density number of particles created.
The creation of universes in entangled pairs may avoid the initial singularity and it would have observable consequences in a large macroscopic universe like ours, at least in principle. In this paper we describe the creation of an entangled pair of universes from a double instanton, which avoids the initial singularity, in the case of a homogeneous and isotropic universe with a conformally coupled massless scalar field. The thermodynamical properties of inter-universal entanglement might have observable consequences on the properties of our single universe provided that the thermodynamics of …
General ideas of gauge/gravity duality allow for the possibility of time dependent solutions that interpolate between a perturbative gauge theory phase and a weakly curved string/gravity phase. Such a scenario applied to cosmology would exhibit a non-geometric phase before the big bang. We investigate a toy model for such a cosmology, whose endpoint is the classical limit of the two-dimensional non-critical string. We discuss the basic dynamics of this model, in particular how it evolves toward the double scaling limit required for stringy dynamics. We further comment on the physics that will …
In this article we compute the density of Dirac particles created by a cosmological anisotropic Bianchi I universe in the presence of a constant electric field. We show that the particle distribution becomes thermal when one neglects the electric interaction.
The stealth scalar field is a non-trivial configuration without any back-reaction to geometry, which is characteristic for non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Studying the creation probability of the de Sitter universe with a stealth scalar field by the Hartle and Hawking's semi-classical method, we show that the effect of the stealth field can be significant. For the class of scalar fields we consider, creation with a stealth field is possible for a discrete value of the coupling constant and its creation probability is always less than that with a trivial scalar field. However, those creati…
Quantum Action Principle which has been used as a ground for a probabilistic interpretation of one-particle relativistic quantum mechanics \cite{GLL} is applied to quantum cosmology. The quantum creation of matter in a minisuperspace model with one homogeneous scalar field is considered. The initial state of the universe is defined as a stationary ground state of the Hamiltonian with the Euclidean signature in which the mean value of the universe radius is equal to the Plank length and the number of the scalar field quanta is equal zero. We interpret the change of the signature as the universe…
In the very early universe, a generalized Schwinger effect can create pairs from both electrical and gravitational fields. The expectation value of fermionic current induced by these newly created pairs has been recently computed in de Sitter spacetime. I will discuss different limiting cases of this result and some of its possible physical interpretations.
In this article we compute the density of scalar and Dirac particles created by a cosmological anisotropic Bianchi type I universe in the presence of a time varying electric field. We show that the particle distribution becomes thermal when one neglects the electric interaction.
We discuss a two-step mechanism to create a new inflationary domain beyond a wormhole throat which is created by a phase transition around an evaporating black hole. The first step is creation of a false vacuum bubble with a thin-wall boundary by the thermal effects of Hawking radiation. Then this wall induces a quantum tunneling to create a wormhole-like configuration. As the space beyond the wormhole throat can expand exponentially, being filled with false vacuum energy, this may be interpreted as creation of another inflationary universe in the final stage of the black hole evaporation.
In the no-boundary univers e the universe is created from an instanton. However, there does not exist any instanton for the ``realistic'' $FRW$ universe with a scalar field. The ``instanton'' leading to its quantum creation may be modified and reinterpreted as a constrained gravitational instanton.
Singular instantons of the type introduced by Hawking and Turok (hep-th/9802030) lead to unacceptable physical consequences and cannot, therefore, be used to describe the creation of open universes.
A scenario for gravitational particle creation in a stiff matter dominated flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe is presented. The primary creation of scalar particles is calculated using quantum field theory in curved spacetime and it is found to be strongly dependent on the scalar mass and the expansion parameter of the universe. The particle creation is most effective for a very massive scalar field and large expansion parameter. We apply the results to cosmology and calculate an upper bound for the equilibrium temperature of the secondary particles created by the scalar field decay.
We investigate the bubble nucleation in five dimensional spacetime catalyzed by quintessence. We especially focus on decay of a metastable Minkowski vacuum to an anti-de Sitter vacuum and study dynamics of the bubble on which four dimensional expanding universe is realized. We also discuss the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture and impose a constraint on the parameter space of the catalysis. As an application of this model, we propose an inflation mechanism and an origin of the dark energy in the context of quintessence in five dimensions.
We study the quantum creation of black hole pairs in the (anti-)de Sitter space background. These black hole pairs in the Kerr-Newman family are created from constrained instantons. At the $WKB$ level, for the chargeless and nonrotating case, the relative creation probability is the exponential of (the negative of) the entropy of the universe. Also for the remaining cases of the family, the creation probability is the exponential of (the negative of) one quarter of the sum of the inner and outer black hole horizon areas. In the absence of a general no-boundary proposal for open universes, we t…
Here we formulate scenario of emergent universe from particle creation mechanism in spatially flat braneworld models. We consider an isotropic and homogeneous universe in Braneworld cosmology and universe is considered as a non-equilibrium thermodynamical system with dissipation due to particle creation mechanism. Assuming the particle creation rate as a function of the Hubble parameter , we formulate emergent scenario in RS2 and DGP models of Braneworld.
Based on an earlier introduced new class of generalized gravity-matter models defined in terms of two independent non-Riemannian volume forms (alternative generally covariant integration measure densities) on the space-time manifold, we derive an effective "Einstein-frame" theory featuring the following remarkable properties: (i) We obtain effective potential for the cosmological scalar field possessing two infinitely large flat regions which allows for a unified description of both early universe inflation as well as of present dark energy epoch; (ii) For a specific parameter range the model …
Under certain circumstances, the collision of magnetic monopoles, topologically locked-in regions of false vacuum, leads to topological inflation and the creation of baby universes. The future evolution of initial data represented by the two incoming monopoles may contain a timelike singularity but this need not be the case. We discuss the global structure of the spacetime associated with monopole collisions and also that of topological inflation. We suggest that topological inflation within magnetic monopoles leads to an eternally reproducing universe.
An interesting idea is that the universe could be spontaneously created from nothing, but no rigorous proof has been given. In this paper, we present such a proof based on the analytic solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation (WDWE). Explicit solutions of the WDWE for the special operator ordering factor p=-2 (or 4) show that, once a small true vacuum bubble is created by quantum fluctuations of the metastable false vacuum, it can expand exponentially no matter whether the bubble is closed, flat or open. The exponential expansion will end when the bubble becomes large and thus the early univer…
We present a non-singular instanton describing the creation of an open universe with a compactified extra dimension. The four dimensional section of this solution is a singular instanton of the type introduced by Hawking and Turok. The ``singularity'' is viewed in five dimensions as a smooth bubble of ``nothing'' which eats up a portion of spacetime as it expands. Flat space with a compact extra dimension is shown to be gravitationally metastable, but sufficiently long lived if the size of the extra dimension is large compared with the Planck length.
The process of quantum creation of a qusihomogeneous inflationary universe near a cosmological singularity is considered. It is shown that during the evolution quantum fluctuations of spatial topologies increase and the universe acquires homogeneous and isotropic character on arbitrary large distances.
A flat FLRW cosmological model with perfect fluid comprising of variable Chaplygin gas has been studied in context of f(R; T) gravity with particle creation. The considered scale factors describe the accelerated expansion of universe due to the effective negative pressure produced during evolution of universe. The role of particle creation pressure on the cosmological parameters have been discussed in detail. By considering well accepted values of free parameters, the late time expansion of the universe with energy conditions have also been studied. The state-finder diagnostic for the consider…
We present a new class of complex instantons in the context of ekpyrotic cosmological theories. These instantons, which satisfy the "no-boundary" boundary conditions, describe the emergence of a classical, contracting universe out of nothing. The ekpyrotic attractor is essential in guaranteeing an evolution towards a real, Lorentzian history of the universe. In the context of the no-boundary proposal, the relative probability for such ekpyrotic histories compared to inflationary ones is very high -- in fact, assuming a bounce can be incorporated, these new instantons currently describe the mos…
If inflation can occur only at the energy density V much smaller than the Planck density, which is the case for many inflationary models based on string theory, then the probability of quantum creation of a closed or an infinitely large open inflationary universe is exponentially suppressed for all known choices of the wave function of the universe. Meanwhile under certain conditions there is no exponential suppression for creation of topologically nontrivial compact flat or open inflationary universes. This suggests, contrary to the standard textbook lore, that compact flat or open universes …
A complete quantum field theoretic study of charged and neutral particle creation in a rapidly/adiabatically expanding Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric for an O(4) scalar field theory with quartic interactions (admitting a phase transition) is given. Quantization is carried out by inclusion of quantum fluctuations. We show that the quantized Hamiltonian admits an su(1,1) invariance. The squeezing transformation diagonalizes the Hamiltonian and shows that the dynamical states are squeezed states. Allowing for different forms of the expansion parameter, we show how the neutral and charged partic…
A model of an emergent universe is formulated using the mechanism of particle creation. Here the universe is considered as a non-equilibrium thermodynamical system with dissipation due to particle creation mechanism. The universe is chosen as spatially flat FRW space-time and the cosmic substratum is chosen as perfect fluid with barotropic equation of state. Both first and second order deviations from equilibrium prescription is considered and it is found that the scenario of emergent universe is possible in both the cases.
Using squeezed vacuum state formalism of quantum optics, an approximate solution to the semiclassical Einstein equation is obtained in Bianchi type-I universe. The phenomena of nonclassical particle creation is also examined in the anisotropic background cosmology.
An expanding closed universe filled with radiation can either recollapse or tunnel to the regime of unbounded expansion, if the cosmological constant is nonzero. We re-examine the question of particle creation during tunneling, with the purpose of resolving a long-standing controversy. Using a perturbative superspace model with a conformally coupled massless scalar field, which is known to give no particle production, we explicitly show that the breakdown of the semiclassical approximation and the ``catastrophic particle production'' claimed earlier in the literature are due to an inappropriat…
The possibility of an emergent universe solution to Einstein's field equations allowing for an irreversible creation of matter at the expense of the gravitational field is shown. With the universe being chosen as spatially flat FRW spacetime together with equation of state proposed in [17], the solution exists when the ratio of the phenomenological matter creation rate to the number density times the Hubble parameter is a number $β$ of the order of unity and independent of time. The thermodynamic behaviour is also determined for this solution. Interestingly, we also find that an emergent unive…
We investigate the decay of metastable de Sitter, Minkowski and anti-de Sitter vacua catalyzed by a black hole and a cloud of strings. We apply the method to the creation of the four dimensional bubble universe in the five dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime recently proposed by Banerjee, Danielsson, Dibitetto, Giri and Schillo. We study the bounce action for the creation and find that the bubble with very small cosmological constant, of order $Λ^{(4)}/M^2_4 \sim 10^{-120}$, is favored by the catalysis by assuming appropriate mass scales of the black hole and the cloud of strings to reproduce…
Over the years, de Sitter spacetime has been a central focus, in studies involving quantum fields, for its importance in the early and late expansion stages of the universe. While de Sitter spacetime closely mimics characteristics of the inflationary and dark energy dominated universe it does not help to understand the radiation and matter dominated expansions. In this review, we revisit some recent works, involving the author, which study gravitational particle creation beyond the de Sitter stage. Specifically, we present novel aspects of particle creation in the radiation dominated universe,…
A scheme for incorporating the creation of radiation and matter into the cosmological evolution is introduced so that it becomes possible to merge the times before and after the creation of radiation and matter in a single scale factor in Robertson-Walker metric. This scheme is illustrated through a toy model that has the prospect of constituting a basis for a realistic model.
A FRWL cosmological model with perfect fluid comprising of van der Waals gas and dust has been studied in the context of dynamical analysis of a three-component autonomous non-linear dynamical system for the particle number density $n$, the Hubble parameter $H$, and the temperature $T$. Perfect fluid isentropic particle creation at rate proportional to an integer power $α$ of $H$ has been incorporated. The existence of a global first integral allows the determination of the temperature evolution law and hence the reduction of the dynamical system to a two-component one. Special attention is pa…
We show that the instability of the singular Vilenkin instanton describing the creation of an open universe can be avoided using, instead of a minimally coupled scalar field, an axionic massless scalar field which gives rise to the Giddings-Strominger instanton. However, if we replace the singularity of the Hawking Turok instanton for an axionic wormhole some interpretational and technical difficulties would appear which can be overcome by introducing a positive cosmological constant in the action. This would make the instanton finite and free constant in the action. This would make the instan…
We study some gravitational instanton solutions that offer a natural realization of the spontaneous creation of inflationary universes in the brane world context in string theory. Decoherence due to couplings of higher (perturbative) modes of the metric as well as matter fields modifies the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for de Sitter space. Generalizing this new wavefunction to be used in string theory, we propose a principle in string theory that hopefully will lead us to the particular vacuum we live in, thus avoiding the anthropic principle. As an illustration of this idea, we give a phenomen…
We calculate the probability of creation of a universe with space topology $S^{1}\times T_{g}$, where $S^{1}$ is the circle and $T_{g}$ is a compact hyperbolic surface of genus $g\geq 2$. We use the method of path integrals as applied to quantum cosmology.
The problem of particle creation from vacuum in a flat Robertson-Walker space-time is studied. Two sets of exact solutions for the Klein Gordon equation are given. Then the canonical method based on Bogoliubov transformation is applied to calculate the pair creation probability and the density number of created particles. Some particular cosmological models such as radiation dominated universe and Milne universe are discussed. For the both cases the vacuum to vacuum transition probability is calculated and the imaginary part of the effective action is extracted.
A classical model for the interior structure of a Schwarzshild black hole which consists in creating multiple de Sitter universes with lightlike boundaries is proposed. The interaction of the boundaries is studied and a scenario leading to disconnected de Sitter universes is described.
Particle creation has been considered as a possible justification for the accelerated expansion of the universe, obeying the second law of thermodynamics, together with the possible existence of Dark Energy. This paper introduces the possibility that the destruction of baryonic and/or dark matter particles also verifies the second law of thermodynamics thanks to a particle exchange with dark energy. General equations for the variation of the number of particles in accelerated universes have been obtained. Finally, a new model of the universe has been developed which predicts dark energy proper…
We investigate the minimal conditions under which the creation of our universe might arise due to a "bounce" from a previous collapse, rather than an explosion from a big-bang singularity. Such a bounce is sometimes referred to as a Tolman wormhole. We subject the bounce to a general model-independent analysis along the lines of that applied to the Morris-Thorne traversable wormholes, and show that there is always an open temporal region surrounding the bounce over which the strong energy condition (SEC) must be violated. On the other hand, all the other energy conditions can easily be satisfi…
We discuss a dramatic difference between the description of the quantum creation of an open universe using the Hartle-Hawking wave function and the tunneling wave function. Recently Hawking and Turok have found that the Hartle-Hawking wave function leads to a universe with Omega = 0.01, which is much smaller that the observed value of Omega > 0.3. Galaxies in such a universe would be about $10^{10^8}$ light years away from each other, so the universe would be practically structureless. We will argue that the Hartle-Hawking wave function does not describe the probability of the universe creatio…
The predictions of the semiclassical description of particle creation based on QFT in classical backgrounds may be significantly modified when the source of the classical background is also quantized and backreaction is taken into account. In the cases of a stable charged particle, expanding empty (Milne) universe, and de Sitter universe with a true cosmological constant, the semiclassical particle creation is completely blocked up.
The problem of cosmological particle creation for a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic Universes is discussed in the context of f(R) theories of gravity. Different from cosmological models based on general relativity theory, it is found that a conformal invariant metric does not forbid the creation of massless particles during the early stages (radiation era) of the Universe.
In the Friedmann equations, an infinite initial density is avoided only when the universe is spatially flat. With such equations being then valid when the scale factor $a=0$, the universe must also be in the state of vacuum when $a$ is infinitesimal. Matter creation thus largely comes from nonlinearity of the Friedmann equations at a finite $a$. For the correspondence between such an initial vacuum and the Friedmann universe, therefore, a vacuum density is suggested to be gravitationally significant only when it could also have a matter phase. The effective cosmological term is then due to suc…
A new ''twice loose shoe'' method in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation of the universe wave function on the cosmic scale factor a and a scalar field $ϕ$ is suggested in this letter. We analysis the both affects come from the tunneling effect of a and the potential well effect of $ϕ$, and obtain the initial values $a_0$ and $ϕ_0$ about a primary closed universe which is born with the largest probability in the quantum manner. Our result is able to overcome the ''large field difficulty'' of the universe quantum creation probability with only tunneling effect. This new born universe has to suffer a sta…
Results on particle creation from vacuum by the gravitational field of the expanding Friedmann Universe are presented. Finite results for the density of particles and the energy density for created particles are given for different exact solutions for different regimes of the expansion of the Universe. The results are obtained as for conformal as for nonconformal particles. The hypothesis of the origination of visible matter from the decay of created from vacuum superheavy particles identified with the dark matter is discussed.
Effects of the vacuum polarization leading to change of the effective gravitational constant and particle creation in the early Universe are discussed. Gauss-Bonnet type coupling to the curvature is considered. Renormalization methods are generalized for such coupling and the N-dimensional space-time. Calculations of creation of entropy and visible matter of the Universe by the gravity of dark matter are made.
For a quantum field in a curved background the choice of the vacuum state is crucial. We exhibit a vacuum state in which the expectation values of the energy and pressure allow an intuitive interpretation. We apply this general result to the de Sitter universe.
The free Dirac equation is solved in a Bianchi Type I space-time, which represents a homogeneous but anisotropic universe, to show the creation of fermionic particles. It is found that unlike in the isotropic case, massless fermion production is possible. An estimate of the energy density of massless particles created during an early anisotropic phase of cosmological expansion is shown to cause substantial back-reaction on the gravitational field. The potential relevance to dark matter particle production, primordial magnetogenesis, and early universe cosmology is discussed briefly.
We treat quantum creation of gravitons by small scale factor oscillations around the average of an expanding universe. Such oscillations can arise in standard general relativity due to oscillations of a homogeneous, minimally coupled scalar field. They can also arise in modified gravity theories with a term proportional to the square of the Ricci scalar in the gravitational action. The graviton wave equation is different in the two cases, leading to somewhat different creation rates. Both cases are treated using a perturbative method due to Birrell and Davies, involving an expansion in a confo…
In this article the particle creation process of scalar and spin 1/2 particles in a spatially open cosmological model associated with a universe filled by radiation and dustlike matter. The Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations are solved via separation of variables. After comparing the{\it \ in }and% {\it \ out} vacua, we obtain that the number of created particles corresponds to Planckian and Fermi-Dirac distributions for the scalar and Dirac cases
Using the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal for the wave function of the universe, we can study the wave function and probability of a single black hole created at the birth of the universe. The black hole originates from a constrained gravitational instanton with conical singularities. The wave function and probability of a universe with a black hole are calculated at the $WKB$ level. The probability of a black hole creation is the exponential of one quarter of the sum of areas of the black hole and cosmological horizons. One quarter of this sum is the total entropy of the universe. We show…
We show that in the isentropic scenario the first order thermodynamical particle creation model gives an emergent universe solution even when the chemical potential is non-zero. However there exists no emergent universe scenario in the second order non-equilibrium theory for the particle creation model. We then point out a correspondence between the particle creation model with barotropic equation of state and the equation of state giving rise to an emergent universe without particle creation in spatially flat FRW cosmology.
