It has long been speculated that many starburst or compact dwarf galaxies are resulted from dwarf-dwarf galaxy merging, but unequivocal evidence for this possibility has rarely been reported in the literature. We present the first study of deep optical broadband images of a gas-dominated blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) VCC848 (Mstar=2e8Msun) which hosts extended stellar shells and thus is confirmed to be a dwarf-dwarf merger. VCC848 is located in the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. By analyzing the stellar light distribution, we found that VCC848 is the result of a merging between two dwarf galaxies with a primary-to-secondary mass ratio < ~ 5 for the stellar components and < ~ 2 for the presumed dark matter halos. The secondary progenitor galaxy has been almost entirely disrupted. The age-mass distribution of photometrically selected star cluster candidates in VCC848 implies that the cluster formation rate (CFR, proportional to star formation rate) was enhanced by a factor of ~ 7 - 10 during the past 1 Gyr. The merging-induced enhancement of CFR peaked near the galactic center a few hundred Myr ago and has started declining in the last few tens of Myr. The current star formation activities, as traced by the youngest clusters, mainly occur at large galactocentric distances (> ~ 1 kpc). The fact that VCC848 is still (atomic) gas-dominated after the period of most violent collision suggests that gas-rich dwarf galaxy merging can result in BCD-like remnants with extended atomic gas distribution surrounding a blue compact center, in general agreement with previous numerical simulations.
We measure the mass growth rate by merging for a wide range of galaxy types. We present the small-scale (0.014 < r < 11 h70^{-1} Mpc) projected cross-correlation functions w(rp) of galaxy subsamples from the spectroscopic sample of the NYU VAGC (5 \times 10^5 galaxies of redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.15) with galaxy subsamples from the SDSS imaging (4 \times 10^7 galaxies). We use smooth fits to de-project the two-dimensional functions w(rp) to obtain smooth three-dimensional real-space cross-correlation functions ξ(r) for each of several spectroscopic subsamples with each of several imaging subsampl…
We present results from the first numerical analysis to support the hypothesis, first proposed in Coleman et al. (2004), that the Fornax dwarf galaxy was formed from the minor merging of two dwarfs about 2 Gyr ago. Using orbits for the Fornax dwarf that are consistent with the latest proper motion measurements, our dynamical evolution models show that the observed asymmetric shell-like substructures can be formed from the remnant of a smaller dwarf during minor merging. These models also predict the formation of diffuse stellar streams. We discuss how these stellar substructures depend on mode…
A population of so-called "blueberry" starbursting dwarf galaxies with extremely blue colors, low-metallicities, and enormous ionization ratios, has recently been found by Yang et al. (2017). Yet we still do not know their detailed properties, such as morphologies, AGN occupations, massive star contents, infrared emission, dust properties, etc. As a pilot study of the blueberries, we investigate the spectroscopic and photometric properties of two blueberry candidates, RGG B and RGG 5, for which Hubble Space Telescope high-resolution images are available. We find that RGG B and RGG 5 perhaps ar…
We present an analysis of the kinematics of a sample of 14 galaxy clusters via velocity dispersion profiles (VDPs), compiled using cluster parameters defined within the X-Ray Galaxy Clusters Database (BAX) cross-matched with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We determine the presence of substructure in the clusters from the sample as a proxy for recent core mergers, resulting in 4 merging and 10 non-merging clusters to allow for comparison between their respective dynamical states. We create VDPs for our samples and divide them by mass, colour and morphology to assess how their ki…
We present multi-band photometry covering $\sim$ 5°$\times$ 5°across $ω$ Cen collected with the Dark Energy Camera, combined to Hubble Space Telescope and Wide Field Imager data for the central regions. The unprecedented photometric accuracy and field coverage allowed us to confirm the different spatial distribution of blue and red main-sequence stars, and of red-giant branch (RGB) stars with different metallicities. The ratio of the number of blue to red main-sequence stars shows that the blue main-sequence sub-population has a more extended spatial distribution compared to the red main-seque…
Galaxy interactions are known to trigger starbursts. Young massive star clusters formed in interacting galaxies and mergers may become young globular clusters. The ages of these clusters can provide clues about the timing of interaction-triggered events, and thus provide an important way to reconstruct the star formation history of merging galaxies. Numerical simulations of galaxy mergers can implement different star formation rules. For instance, star formation dependent on gas density or triggered by shocks, predicts significantly different star formation histories. To test the validity of t…
The LIGO/Virgo detections of gravitational waves from merging black holes of $\simeq$ 30 solar mass suggest progenitor stars of low metallicity (Z/Z$_{\odot} \lesssim 0.3$). In this talk I will provide constrains on where the progenitors of GW150914 and GW170104 may have formed, based on advanced models of galaxy formation and evolution combined with binary population synthesis models. First I will combine estimates of galaxy properties (star-forming gas metallicity, star formation rate and merger rate) across cosmic time to predict the low redshift BBH merger rate as a function of present day…
Stellar bars are a common morphological feature of spiral galaxies. While it is known that they can form in isolation, or be induced tidally, few studies have explored the production of stellar bars in galaxy merging. We look to investigate bar formation in galaxy merging using methods from deep learning to analyse our N-body simulations. The primary aim is to determine the constraints on the mass ratio and orientations of merging galaxies that are most conducive to bar formation. We further aim to explore whether it is possible to classify simulated barred spiral galaxies based on the mechani…

We propose that there is an evolutionary link between ultra-compact blue dwarf galaxies (UCBDs) with active star formation and nucleated dwarfs based on the results of numerical simulations of dwarf-dwarf merging. We consider the observational fact that low-mass dwarfs can be very gas-rich, and thereby investigate the dynamical and chemical evolution of very gas-rich, dissipative dwarf-dwarf mergers. We find that the remnants of dwarf-dwarf mergers can be dominated by new stellar populations formed from the triggered starbursts and consequently can have blue colors and higher metallicities (Z~…
We analyze the position of the two populations of blue stragglers in the globular cluster M30 in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Both populations of blue stragglers are brighter than the cluster's turn-off, but one population (the blue blue-stragglers) align along the zero-age main-sequence whereas the (red) population is elevated in brightness (or colour) by $\sim 0.75$ mag. Based on stellar evolution and merger simulations we argue that the red population, which composes about 40\% of the blue stragglers in M 30, is formed at a constant rate of $\sim 2.8$ blue stragglers per Gyr over the la…
We propose that the rotational kinematics of the globular cluster system (GCS) in M31 can result from a past major merger event that could have formed its bulge component. We numerically investigate kinematical properties of globular clusters (GCs) in remnants of galaxy mergers between two disks with GCs in both their disk and halo components. We find that the GCS formed during major merging can show strongly rotational kinematics with the maximum rotational velocities of 140 - 170 km/s for a certain range of orbital parameters of merging. We also find that a rotating stellar bar, which can be…
Recent observations have revealed that at least 8 globular clusters (GCs) in the Galaxy show internal abundance spreads in [Fe/H]. We investigate the origin of these `anomalous' GCs using numerical simulations of GCs in the dwarfs orbiting around the Galaxy and chemical evolution model of dwarfs hosting the GCs. The principal results are as follows. GCs formed in a host dwarf galaxy with a total mass of ~ 10^10 M_sun can merge to form a single nuclear GC before the host is completely destroyed by the Galaxy, if they are massive (> 3*10^5 M_sun) and if they are formed in the inner region (R<400…
The origin of the observed steep rotation curves of blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) remains largely unexplained by theoretical models of BCD formation. We therefore investigate the rotation curves in BCDs formed from mergers between gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies based on the results of numerical simulations for BCD formation. The principal results are as follows. The dark matter of merging dwarf irregulars undergoes a central concentration so that the central density can become up to six times higher than those of the initial dwarf irregulars. However, the more compact dark matter halo …
Hierarchical triple-star systems are expected to form frequently via close binary-binary encounters in the dense cores of globular clusters. In a sufficiently inclined triple, gravitational interactions between the inner and outer binary can cause large-amplitude oscillations in the eccentricity of the inner orbit ("Lidov-Kozai cycles"), which can lead to a collision and merger of the two inner components. In this paper we use Monte Carlo models of dense star clusters to identify all triple systems formed dynamically and we compute their evolution using a highly accurate three-body integrator …
A clear link between a dwarf-dwarf merger event and enhanced star formation (SF) in the recent past was recently identified in the gas-dominated merger remnant VCC 848, offering by far the clearest view of a gas-rich late-stage dwarf-dwarf merger. We present a joint analysis of JVLA HI emission-line mapping, optical imaging and numerical simulations of VCC 848, in order to examine the impact of the merger on the stellar and gaseous distributions. VCC 848 has less than 30% of its HI gas concentrated within the central high-surface-brightness star-forming region, while the remaining HI is entrai…
An investigation on the possible dynamical models of the core galaxy NGC 1399 is performed. Because early-type galaxies are likely to be formed through merging events, remnant rings are considered in the modeling process. A numerical survey over three parameters is employed to obtain the best-fit models that are completely consistent with observations. It is found that the inner slope of dark matter profile is a cuspy one for this core galaxy. The existence of remnant rings in best-fit models indicates a merging history. The remnant ring explains the flatten surface brightness, and thus could …
We present a detailed analysis of star formation properties of galaxies in a nearby ($z\sim0.046$) young ($\sim$0.6 Gyr) post-merger cluster system A3376, with a moderate shock front ( $v_{s}\sim$1630 km/s) observed as symmetric radio relics. Exploiting the spectroscopic data from the wide-field OmegaWINGS survey and the associated photometric information, our investigations reveal the plausible effects of the dynamic post-merger environment differing from the putative pre-merger cluster environment. The remnants of the pre-merger relaxed cluster environment are realised through the existence …
Binary systems can evolve into immensely different exotic systems such as blue straggle stars (BSSs), yellow straggler stars, cataclysmic variables, type Ia supernovae depending on their initial mass, the orbital parameters and evolution. The aim of this thesis is to understand the demographics of post-mass-transfer systems (BSSs, white dwarfs and blue lurkers) present in the open clusters and how they are formed. First, we identified the cluster members using Gaia EDR3 data in six open clusters. Two of the clusters, M67 and King2, were studied in detail using UVIT, Gaia, GALEX, 2MASS and othe…
Recent observations and hydrodynamical simulations of star formation inside a giant molecular cloud have revealed that, within a star forming region, stars do not form evenly distributed throughout this region, but rather in small sub-clumps. It is generally believed that these sub-clumps merge and form a young star cluster. The time-scale of this merging process is crucial for the evolution and the possible survival of the final star cluster. The key issue is whether this merging process happens faster than the time needed to remove the residual gas of the cloud. A merging time-scale shorter …
The growth of galaxy clusters is energetic and may trigger and/or quench star formation and black hole activity. The ENISALA project is a collection of multiwavelength observations aimed at understanding how large-scale structure drives galaxy and black hole evolution. Here, we introduce optical spectroscopy of over 800 H$α$ emission-line galaxies, selected in 14 z~0.15-0.31 galaxy clusters, spanning a range of masses and dynamical states. We investigate the nature of the emission lines in relation to the host galaxy properties, its location within the cluster, and the properties of the parent…
Blue straggler stars (BSSs) are stars observed to be hotter and bluer than other stars with the same luminosity in their environment. As such they appear to be much younger than the rest of the stellar population. Two main channels have been suggested to produce such stars: (1) collisions between stars in clusters or (2) mass transfer between, or merger of, the components of primordial short-period binaries. Here we suggest a third scenario, in which the progenitor of BSSs are formed in primordial (or dynamically formed) hierarchical triple stars. In such configurations the dynamical evolution…

Globular clusters (GCs) are some of the most visible tracers of the merging and accretion history of galaxy halos. Metal-poor GCs, in particular, are thought to arrive in massive galaxies largely through dry, minor merging events, but it is rare to see a direct connection between GCs and visible stellar streams. NGC 474 is a post-merger early-type galaxy with dramatic fine structures made of concentric shells and radial streams that have been more clearly revealed by deep imaging. We present a study of GCs in NGC 474 to better establish the relationship between merger-induced fine structure an…
Following the study of Darg et al. (2009; hereafter D09a) we explore the environments, optical colours, stellar masses, star formation and AGN activity in a sample of 3003 pairs of merging galaxies drawn from the SDSS using visual classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project. While D09a found that the spiral-to-elliptical ratio in (major) mergers appeared higher than that of the global galaxy population, no significant differences are found between the environmental distributions of mergers and a randomly selected control sample. This makes the high occurrence of spirals in mergers unlikely to …
We investigate the host galaxies of compact objects merging in the local Universe, by combining the results of binary population-synthesis simulations with the Illustris cosmological box. Double neutron stars (DNSs) merging in the local Universe tend to form in massive galaxies (with stellar mass $>10^{9}$ M$_\odot$) and to merge in the same galaxy where they formed, with a short delay time between the formation of the progenitor stars and the DNS merger. In contrast, double black holes (DBHs) and black hole $-$ neutron star binaries (BHNSs) form preferentially in small galaxies (with stellar …
We present early results from a detailed analysis of the BSS population in Galactic GCs based on HST data.Using proper motion cleaning of the color-magnitude diagrams we construct a large catalog of BSSs and study some population properties.Stellar evolutionary models are used to find stellar mass and age estimates for the BSS populations in order to establish constraints related to the dynamical interactions in which they may have formed.
Using VLT/FLAMES optical IFU observations, we present a detailed study of UM 448, a nearby Blue Compact Galaxy (BCG) previously reported to have an anomalously high N/O abundance ratio. NTT/SuSI2 images reveal a morphology suggestive of a merger of two systems of contrasting colour, whilst our H-alpha emission maps resolve UM 448 into three separate regions that do not coincide with the stellar continuum peaks. UM 448 exhibits complex emission line profiles, with lines consisting of a narrow, central component, an underlying broad component and a third, narrow blue-shifted component. Radial ve…
We compile two samples of cluster galaxies with complimentary hydrodynamic and N-body analysis using FLASH code to ascertain how their differing populations drive their rotational profiles and to better understand their dynamical histories. We select our main cluster sample from the X-ray Galaxy Clusters Database (BAX), which are populated with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies. The BAX clusters are tested for the presence of sub-structures, acting as proxies for core mergers, culminating in sub-samples of 8 merging and 25 non-merging galaxy clusters. An additional sample of 12 galaxy c…
We present a pilot study of the intracluster light (ICL) in massive clusters using imaging of the $z=0.566$ cluster of galaxies WHL J013719.8-08284 observed by the RELICS project with the HST. We measure the ICL fraction in four optical ACS/WFC filters (F435W, F475W, F606W, and F814W) and five infrared WFC3/IR bands (F105W, F110W, F125W, F140W, and F160W). The ICL maps are calculated using the free of a priori assumptions algorithm CICLE, and the cluster membership is estimated from photometric properties. We find optical ICL fractions that range between $\sim$6\% and 19\% in nice agreement wi…
Blue stragglers are thought to be formed from the merger or coalescence of two stars, but the details of their formation in clusters has been difficult to disentangle. We discuss the two main formation mechanisms for blue stragglers (stellar collisions or mass transfer in a binary system). We then look at the additional complications caused by the stars living in the dynamically active environment of a star cluster. We review the recent observational and theoretical work which addresses the question "which mechanism dominates?" and conclude that the most likely answer is that both mechanisms a…
With the aim of exploring the fast evolutionary path from the blue cloud of star-forming galaxies to the red sequence of quiescent galaxies in the local universe, we select a local advanced merging infrared luminous and ultraluminous galaxy (adv-merger (U)LIRGs) sample and perform careful dust extinction corrections to investigate their positions in the SFR-$M_{\ast}$, u-r and NUV-r color-mass diagrams. The sample consists of 89 (U)LIRGs at the late merger stage, obtained from cross-correlating the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey and 1 Jy ULIRGs samples with the Sloan Digital Sky Sur…
We use Horizon-AGN, a hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, to explore the role of mergers in the evolution of massive (M > 10^10 MSun) galaxies around the epoch of peak cosmic star formation (1<z<4). The fraction of massive galaxies in major mergers (mass ratio R<4:1) is around 3%, a factor of ~2.5 lower than minor mergers (4:1<R <10:1) at these epochs, with no trend with redshift. At z~1, around a third of massive galaxies have undergone a major merger, while all such systems have undergone either a major or minor merger. While almost all major mergers at z>3 are 'blue' (i.e. have signific…
New high-resolution maps with the IRAM Interferometer of the redshifted [C II] 158 micron line and the 0.98mm dust continuum of HDF850.1 at z = 5.185 show the source to have a blueshifted northern component and a redshifted southern component, with a projected separation of 0.3 arcsec, or 2 kpc. We interpret these components as primordial galaxies that are merging to form a larger galaxy. We think it is the resulting merger-driven starburst that makes HDF850.1 an ultraluminous infrared galaxy, with an L(IR) of 1E13 Lsun. The observed line and continuum brightness temperatures and the constant …
Stars in globular clusters are generally believed to have all formed at the same time, early in the Galaxy's history. 'Blue stragglers' are stars massive enough that they should have evolved into white dwarfs long ago. Two possible mechanisms have been proposed for their formation: mass transfer between binary companions and stellar mergers resulting from direct collisions between two stars. Recently, the binary explanation was claimed to be dominant. Here we report that there are two distinct parallel sequences of blue stragglers in M30. This globular cluster is thought to have undergone 'cor…
We use photometry and proper motions from Gaia DR2 to determine the blue straggler star (BSS) populations of 16 old (1-10 Gyr), nearby ($d< 3500$ pc) open clusters. We find that the fractional number of BSS compared to RGB stars increases with age, starting near zero at 1 Gyr and flattening to $\sim 0.35$ by 4 Gyr. Fitting stellar evolutionary tracks to these BSS, we find that their mass distribution peaks at a few tenths of a solar mass above the main-sequence turnoff. BSS more than 0.5 $M_\odot$ above the turnoff make up only $\sim25$\% of the sample, and BSS more than 1.0 $M_\odot$ above th…
