We present multi-band photometry covering $\sim$ 5°$\times$ 5°across $ω$ Cen collected with the Dark Energy Camera, combined to Hubble Space Telescope and Wide Field Imager data for the central regions. The unprecedented photometric accuracy and field coverage allowed us to confirm the different spatial distribution of blue and red main-sequence stars, and of red-giant branch (RGB) stars with different metallicities. The ratio of the number of blue to red main-sequence stars shows that the blue main-sequence sub-population has a more extended spatial distribution compared to the red main-sequence one, and the frequency of blue main-sequence stars increases at a distance of $\sim$ 20 arcmin from $ω$ Cen center. Similarly, the more metal-rich RGB stars show a more extended spatial distribution compared to the more metal-poor ones in the outskirts of the cluster. Moreover, the centers of the distributions of metal-rich and metal-poor RGB stars are shifted in different directions with respect to the geometrical center of $ω$ Cen. We constructed stellar density profiles for the blue and red main-sequence stars; they confirm that the blue main-sequence sub-population has a more extended spatial distribution compared to the red main-sequence one in the outskirts of $ω$ Cen, as found based on the star number ratio. We also computed the ellipticity profile of $ω$ Cen, which has a maximum value of 0.16 at a distance of $\sim$ 8 arcmin from the center, and a minimum of 0.05 at $\sim$ 30 arcmin; the average ellipticity is $\sim0.10$. The circumstantial evidence presented in this work suggests a merging scenario for the formation of the peculiar stellar system $ω$ Cen.
This paper presents a detailed kinematic and chemical analysis of 16 members of the Kapteyn moving group. The group does not appear to be chemically homogenous. However, the kinematics and the chemical abundance patterns seen in 14 of the stars in this group are similar to those observed in the well-studied cluster, Omega Centauri. Some members of this moving group may be remnants of the tidal debris of Omega Cen, left in the Galactic disk during the merger event which deposited Omega Cen into the Milky Way.
The infrared channel of the Wide-Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope revealed multiple main sequences of very low-mass stars in the globular clusters NGC 2808 and Omega Centauri. In this paper I summarize the observational facts and provide a possible interpretation.
The stellar system omega Centauri is well known for the large range in abundance among its member stars. Recent work has indicated that the globular cluster M22 (NGC 6656) also possesses an internal abundance range, albeit substantially smaller than that in omega Cen. Here we compare, as a function of [Fe/H], element-to-iron ratios in the two systems for a number of different elements using data from abundance analyses of red giant branch stars. It appears that the nucleosynthetic enrichment processes were very similar in these two systems despite the substantial difference in total mass.
The double main sequence identified in the globular cluster Omega Centauri has been interpreted using isochrones to indicate a large variation in the abundance of helium. If true, a helium enhancement carries strong implications for the chemical and stellar evolutionary history of this cluster. However, only indirect measures currently support this conjecture. We report the discovery of a variation in the line strength of the near-infrared He I 10830 A transition in twelve similar red giants in Omega Centauri observed with PHOENIX on Gemini-S. Abundances of these stars derived from Magellan/MI…
We have used high resolution observations obtained at the AAT with UHRF (R ~ 100,000) and at Gemini-S with b-HROS (R ~ 150,000) to determine magnesium isotope ratios for seven omega Centauri red giants that cover a range in iron abundance from [Fe/H] = --1.78 to --0.78 dex, and for two red giants in M4 (NGC 6121). The omega Centauri stars sample both the "primordial" (i.e., O-rich, Na and Al-poor) and the "extreme" (O-depleted, Na and Al-rich) populations in the cluster. The primordial population stars in both omega Centauri and M4 show (25Mg, 26Mg)/24 Mg isotopic ratios that are consistent wi…
We present a chemical abundance analysis of a metal-poor star, ROA 276, in the stellar system omega Centauri. We confirm that this star has an unusually high [Sr/Ba] abundance ratio. Additionally, ROA 276 exhibits remarkably high abundance ratios, [X/Fe], for all elements from Cu to Mo along with normal abundance ratios for the elements from Ba to Pb. The chemical abundance pattern of ROA 276, relative to a primordial omega Cen star ROA 46, is best fit by a fast-rotating low-metallicity massive stellar model of 20 Msun, [Fe/H] = -1.8, and an initial rotation 0.4 times the critical value; no ot…
We present the first comprehensive study of the most massive globular cluster Omega Centauri in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) extending from the center to ~ 28% of the tidal radius using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope aboard AstroSat. A comparison of the FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams with available canonical models reveals that the horizontal branch (HB) stars bluer than the knee (hHBs) and the white dwarfs (WDs) are fainter in the FUV by ~ 0.5 mag than model predictions. They are also fainter than their counterparts in M13, another massive cluster. We simulated HB with at least five sub…
The helium-enriched (He-enriched) metal-rich red giants of Omega Centauri, discovered by Hema and Pandey using the low-resolution spectra from the Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) and confirmed by the analyses of the high-resolution spectra obtained from the HRS-South African Large Telescope (SALT) for LEID 34225 and LEID 39048, are reanalysed here to determine their degree of He-enhancement/hydrogen-deficiency (H-deficiency). The observed MgH band combined with model atmospheres with differing He/H ratios are used for the analyses. The He/H ratios of these two giants are determined by enforcing th…

We analyze data from the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys of the globular cluster Omega Cen. We construct a photometric and proper-motion catalog using the GO-9442, GO-10252, and GO-10775 data sets. The 2.5- to 4-year baseline between observations yields a catalog of some 10^5 proper motions, with 53,382 high-quality measurements in a central field. We determine the cluster center to ~1-arcsecond accuracy using two different star-count methods, and a completely independent method using 2MASS images. We also determine the kinematical center of the proper motions, which agree…
We present [K/Fe] abundance ratios for a sample of 450 stars in Omega Centauri, using high resolution spectra acquired with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES@VLT. Abundances for Fe, Na and Mg were also derived. We detected intrinsic K variations in the analysed stars. Moreover, [K/Fe] shows a significant correlation with [Na/Fe] and anti-correlation with [Mg/Fe]. The presence of a clear-cut Mg-K anti-correlation makes Omega Centauri the third stellar system, after NGC 2419 and NGC 2808, hosting a sub-population of stars with [Mg/Fe]<0.0 dex, K-enriched in the case of Omega Centauri by ~0.3 …
Recent exam of large samples of omega Cen giants shows that it shares with mono-metallic globular clusters the presence of the sodium versus oxygen anticorrelation, within each subset of stars with iron content in the range -1.9<~[Fe/H]<~-1.3. These findings suggest that, while the second generation formation history in omega Cen is more complex than that of mono-metallic clusters, it shares some key steps with those simpler cluster. In addition, the giants in the range -1.3<[Fe/H]<~-0.7 show a direct O--Na correlation, at moderately low O, but Na up to 20 times solar. These peculiar Na abunda…
High spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra of red giants in the globular cluster Omega Centauri are analysed for stellar parameters and chemical abundances of 15 elements including helium by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. The simultaneous abundance analysis of MgH and Mg lines adopting theoretical photospheres and a combination of He/H$-$ratios proved to be the only powerful probe to evaluate helium abundances of red giants cooler than 4400 K, wherein otherwise helium line transitions (He {\scs I} 10830 and 5876 Å) present for a direc…
We investigate the formation processes of the Galactic globular cluster (GC) omega Cen with multiple stellar populations based on our original hydrodynamical simulations with chemical enrichment by Type II supernovae (SNe II), asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and neutron star mergers (NSMs). The principal results are as follows. Multiple stellar populations with a wide range of [Fe/H] can be formed from rather massive and compact molecular cloud with a mass of 2 * 10^7 M_sun in the central region of its dwarf galaxy within less than a few hundred Myr. Gas ejected from SNe II and AGB stars …
We measured temperatures, gravities, and masses for a large sample of blue horizontal branch stars in omega Centauri, comparing the results with theoretical expectations for canonical and He-enriched stars, and with previous measurements in three other clusters. The measured gravities of omega Cen stars are systematically lower than canonical models, in agreement with expectations for He-enriched stars, and contrary to that observed in the comparison clusters. However, the derived masses are unrealistically too low as well. This cannot be explained by low gravities alone, nor by any of the oth…
The most massive and complex globular clusters in the Galaxy are thought to have originated as the nuclear cores of now tidally disrupted dwarf galaxies, but the connection between globular clusters and dwarf galaxies is tenuous with the M54/Sagittarius system representing the only unambiguous link. The globular cluster Omega Centauri (w Cen) is more massive and chemically diverse than M 54, and is thought to have been the nuclear star cluster of either the Sequoia or Gaia-Enceladus galaxy. Local Group dwarf galaxies with masses equivalent to these systems often host significant populations of…
We present the results of a survey of radial velocities over a wide region extending from r~10 arcmin out to r~80 arcmin (~1.5 tidal radii) within the massive star cluster omega Centauri. The survey was performed with FLAMES@VLT, to study the velocity dispersion profile in the outer regions of this stellar system. We derived accurate radial velocities for a sample of 2557 newly observed stars, identifying 318 bona-fide cluster red giants. Merging our data with those provided by Pancino et al. (2007), we assembled a final homogeneous sample of 946 cluster members that allowed us to trace the ve…
We derive abundances of Fe, Na, O, and s-elements from GIRAFFE@VLT spectra for more than 200 red giant stars in the Milky Way satellite Omega Centauri. Our preliminary results are that: (i) we confirm that Omega Centauri exibiths large star-to-star metallicity variations ($\sim$ 1.4 dex); (ii) the metallicity distribution reveals the presence of at least five stellar populations with different [Fe/H]; (iii) a clear Na-O anticorrelation is clearly observed for the metal-poor and metal-intermediate populations while apparently the anticorrelation disappears for the most metal-rich populations. I…
In this letter, the results of our low-resolution spectroscopic survey for identifying the hydrogen-deficient (H-deficient) stars in the red giant sample of the globular cluster Omega Cen are reported. Spectral analyses were carried out on the basis of the strengths of (0,0) MgH band and the Mg b triplet. In our sample, four giants were identified with weak/absent MgH bands in their observed spectra not as expected for their well determined stellar parameters. The Mg abundances for the program stars were determined from subordinate lines of the MgH band to the blue of the Mg b triplet, using t…
We analysed high-resolution UVES spectra of six stars belonging to the subgiant branch of omega Centauri, and derived abundance ratios of 19 chemical elements (namely Al, Ba, C, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, La, Mg, Mn, N, Na, Ni, Sc, Si, Sr, Ti, and Y). A comparison with previous abundance determinations for red giants provided remarkable agreement and allowed us to identify the sub-populations to which our targets belong. We found that three targets belong to a low-metallicity population at [Fe/H]~-2.0 dex, [alpha/Fe]~+0.4 dex and [s/Fe]~0 dex. Stars with similar characteristics were found in small am…
We report a spectroscopic study of 19 photometric variables and 55 blue, yellow and red straggler candidates in the field of omega Centauri. We confirm the cluster membership of 18 variables and 54 straggler candidates. Velocity variations are detected in 22 objects, and another 17 objects are classified as suspected of being velocity-variable. Velocity data of 11 photometric variables phase with their photometric periods, however none of these objects has a mass function indicating the presence of a massive degenerate component. Based on both photometric and spectroscopic data we find that th…
By using high-resolution spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO/VLT, we measured radial and rotational velocities for 110 Blue Straggler stars (BSSs) in Omega Centauri, the globular cluster-like stellar system harboring the largest known BSS population. According to their radial velocities, 109 BSSs are members of the system. The rotational velocity distribution is very broad, with the bulk of BSSs spinning at less than ~40 km/s (in agreement with the majority of such stars observed in other globular clusters) and a long tail reaching ~200 km/s. About 40% of the sample has vsini >40 k…
We summarize results of a search for X-ray-emitting binary stars in the massive globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) using Chandra and HST. ACIS-I imaging reveals 180 X-ray sources, of which we estimate that 45-70 are associated with the cluster. We present 40 identifications, most of which we have obtained using ACS/WFC imaging with HST that covers the central 10'x10' of the cluster. Roughly half of the optical IDs are accreting binary stars, including 9 very faint blue stars that we suggest are cataclysmic variables near the period limit. Another quarter comprise a variety of different…
Omega Centauri is no longer the only globular cluster known to contain multiple stellar populations, yet it remains the most puzzling. Due to the extreme way in which the multiple stellar population phenomenon manifests in this cluster, it has been suggested that it may be the remnant of a larger stellar system. In this work, we present a spectroscopic investigation of the stellar populations hosted in the globular cluster Omega Centauri to shed light on its, still puzzling, chemical enrichment history. With this aim we used FLAMES+GIRAFFE@VLT to observe 300 stars distributed along the multimo…
We herein determine the average integrated mass loss from stars stars belonging to the dominant metal-poor population ([Fe/H] ~ --1.7) of the Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri (NGC 5139) during their red giant and horizontal branch evolution. Masses are empirically calculated from spectroscopic measurements of surface gravity and photometric measurements of temperature and luminosity. Systematic uncertainties prevent an absolute measurement of masses at a phase of evolution. However, the relative masses of early asymptotic giant branch stars and central red giant branch stars can be mea…
We report the discovery of two Li-rich giant stars (fainter than the red giant branch bump) in the stellar system Omega Centauri using GIRAFFE-FLAMES spectra. These two stars have A(Li)=1.65 and 2.40 dex and they belong to the main population of the system ([Fe/H]=--1.70 and --1.82, respectively). The most Li-rich of them (#25664) has [Na/Fe]=+0.87 dex that is ~0.5 dex higher than those measured in the most Na-rich stars of Omega Centauri of similar metallicity. The chemical abundances of Li and Na in #25664 can be qualitatively explained by deep extra mixing efficient within the star during i…
