We investigate observational constraints on cosmological parameters combining 15 measurements of the transversal BAO scale (obtained free of any fiducial cosmology) with Planck-CMB data to explore the parametric space of some cosmological models. We investigate how much Planck + transversal BAO data can constraint the minimum $Λ$CDM model, and extensions, including neutrinos mass scale $M_ν$, and the possibility for a dynamical dark energy (DE) scenario. Assuming the $Λ$CDM cosmology, we find $H_0 = 69.23 \pm 0.50$ km s${}^{-1}$ Mpc${}^{-1}$, $M_ν < 0.11$ eV and $r_{\rm drag} = 147.59 \pm 0.26$ Mpc (the sound horizon at drag epoch) from Planck + transversal BAO data. When assuming a dynamical DE cosmology, we find that the inclusion of the BAO data can indeed break the degeneracy of the DE free parameters, improving the constraints on the full parameter space significantly. We note that the model is compatible with local measurements of $H_0$ and there is no tension on $H_0$ estimates in this dynamical DE context. Also, we discuss constraints and consequences from a joint analysis with the local $H_0$ measurement from SH0ES. Finally, we perform a model-independent analysis for the deceleration parameter, $q(z)$, using only information from transversal BAO data.
An observational tension on estimates of the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, using early and late Universe information, is being of intense discussion in the literature. Additionally, it is of great importance to measure $H_0$ independently of CMB data and local distance ladder method. In this sense, we analyze 15 measurements of the transversal BAO scale, $θ_{\rm BAO}$, obtained in a weakly model-dependent approach, in combination with other data sets obtained in a model-independent way, namely, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) information, 6 gravitationally lensed quasars with measured time delays by…
The 2-point angular correlation function $w(θ)$ (2PACF), where $θ$ is the angular separation between pairs of galaxies, provides the transversal Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal almost model-independently. In this paper we use 409,337 luminous red galaxies in the redshift range $z = [0.440,0.555]$ obtained from the tenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR10) to estimate $θ_{\rm{BAO}}(z)$ from the 2PACF at six redshift {shells}. Since noise and systematics can hide the BAO signature in the $w - θ$ plane, we also discuss some criteria to localize the acoustic bump. We …
A plethora of observational data obtained over the last couple of decades has allowed cosmology to enter into a precision era and has led to the foundation of the standard cosmological constant and cold dark matter paradigm, known as the $Λ$CDM model. Given the many possible extensions of this concordance model, we present here several novel consistency tests which could be used to probe for deviations from $Λ$CDM. First, we derive a joint consistency test for the spatial curvature $Ω_{k,0}$ and the matter density $Ω_\textrm{m,0}$ parameters, constructed using only the Hubble rate $H(z)$, whic…
The assumption of a Friedmann-Lemaître-Roberton-Walker (FLRW) Universe is one of the fundamental pillars of modern Cosmology. It is crucial to confront it against cosmological observations in order to confirm (or rule out) the validity of the $Λ$CDM paradigm. We perform a consistency test of the FLRW metric using measurements of both radial and transversal modes of Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations in a model-independent fashion using Gaussian Processes. The impact of different prior assumptions for the sound horizon scale and the Hubble Constant is also explored. We find a mild deviation of the …
In this work we introduce two new polynomial parametrizations of dark energy and explore their correlation properties. The parameters to fit are the equation of state values at z=0 and z=0.5, which have naturally low correlation and have already been shown to improve the popular Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parametrization. We test our models with low redshift astronomical probes: type Ia supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), in the form of both current and synthetic data. Specifically, we present simulations of measurements of the radial and transversal BAO scales similar to …

We measure the transverse baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signal in the local Universe using a sample of blue galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) survey as a cosmological tracer. The method is weakly dependent on a cosmological model and is suitable for 2D analyses in thin redshift bins to investigate the SDSS data in the interval $z {\in} [0.105, 0.115]$. We detect the transverse BAO signal $θ_{BAO} = 19.8^° {\pm} 1.05^°$ at $z_{eff} = 0.11$, with a statistical significance of $2.2 σ$. Additionally, we perform tests that confirm the robustness of this angular BAO signature. S…
We present cosmological constraints from a joint analysis of the pre- and post-reconstruction galaxy power spectrum multipoles from the final data release of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Geometric constraints are obtained from the positions of BAO peaks in reconstructed spectra, analyzed in combination with the unreconstructed spectra in a full-shape (FS) likelihood using a joint covariance matrix, giving stronger parameter constraints than FS-only or BAO-only analyses. We introduce a new method for obtaining constraints from reconstructed spectra based on a correlated t…
Following a quasi model-independent approach we measure the transversal BAO mode at high redshift using the two-point angular correlation function (2PACF). The analyses done here are only possible now with the quasar catalogue from the twelfth data release (DR12Q) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, because it is spatially dense enough to allow the measurement of the angular BAO signature with moderate statistical significance and acceptable precision. Our analyses with quasars in the redshift interval z = [2.20,2.25] produce the angular BAO scale theta_BAO = 1.77 +- 0.31 deg with a statistical…
The clustering properties of the Universe at large-scales are currently being probed at various redshifts through several cosmological tracers and with diverse statistical estimators. Here we use the three-point angular correlation function (3PACF) to probe the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) features in the quasars catalogue from the twelfth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with mean redshift z = 2.225, detecting the BAO imprint with a statistical significance of 2.9σ, obtained using lognormal mocks. Following a quasi model-independent approach for the 3PACF, we find the BAO tr…
Due to the low resolution of slitless spectroscopy, future surveys including those made possible by the Roman and Euclid space telescopes will be prone to line mis-identification, leading to interloper galaxies at the wrong redshifts in the large-scale structure catalogues. The most pernicious of these have a small displacement between true and false redshift such that the interloper positions are correlated with the target galaxies. We consider how to correct for such contaminants, focusing on $\rm Hβ$ interlopers in [OIII] catalogues as will be observed by Roman, which are misplaced by $Δd =…

In this paper, we consider the recently proposed hybrid metric-Palatini gravitational theory, which consists of adding to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian an $f(\mathcal{R})$ term constructed à la Palatini. Using the respective dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation, we explore the cosmological evolution of a specific model, given by $f(\mathcal{R}) \propto \mathcal{R}^2$, and obtain constraints on the free parameters by using different sources of cosmological data. The viability of the model is analysed by combining the conditions imposed by the Supernovae Ia and Baryonic Acoustic…
The statistical power of Lyman-$α$ forest Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements is set to increase significantly in the coming years as new instruments such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument deliver progressively more constraining data. Generating mock datasets for such measurements will be important for validating analysis pipelines and evaluating the effects of systematics. With such studies in mind, we present LyaCoLoRe: a package for producing synthetic Lyman-$α$ forest survey datasets for BAO analyses. LyaCoLoRe transforms initial Gaussian random field skewers into skew…
We analyse some open debates in cosmology in light of the most updated quasar (QSO) sample, covering a wide redshift range up to $z\sim7.5$, combined with type Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Indeed, extending the cosmological analyses with high-redshift data is key to distinguishing between different cosmological models that are degenerate at low redshifts, and allowing better constraints on a possible dark energy (DE) evolution. Also, we discuss combinations of BAO, SNe, and QSO data to understand their compatibility and implications for extensions of the standard…
From the analysis of Supernova Ia data alongwith Observational Hubble Data (OHD) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data, we attempt to find out the nature of a scalar potential that may be responsible for the Dark Energy of the universe. We demonstrate that in order to explain the varying dark energy equation of state ($ω_X(z)$) as obtained in a model independent way from the analyses of observational data, we need to invoke a quintom scalar field having a "quintessence" part for $ω_X(z) > -1$ and a "phantom" part for $ω_X(z) < -1$. We consider a Gaussian type potential for these scalar fi…
In this thesis, I analyse the 2D anisotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal present in the final WiggleZ dataset. I utilise newly released covariance matrices from the WizCOLA simulations and follow well tested methodologies used in prior analyses of the BAO signal in alternative datasets. The WiggleZ data is presented in two forms - in multipole expansion and in data wedges - both of which are analysed in this thesis. I test my model against previous one dimensional analyses of the BAO signal in the WiggleZ data and against WizCOLA simulations, and find it to be free of bias or syst…

Photometric data can be analyzed using the three-dimensional correlation function $ξ_{\rm p}$ to extract cosmological information via e.g., measurement of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). Previous studies modeled $ξ_{\rm p} $ assuming a Gaussian photo-$z$ approximation. In this work we improve the modeling by incorporating realistic photo-$z$ distribution. We show that the position of the BAO scale in $ξ_{\rm p}$ is determined by the photo-$z$ distribution and the Jacobian of the transformation. The latter diverges at the transverse scale of the separation $s_\perp $, and it explains wh…

[abridged] We present an anisotropic analysis of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale in the twelfth and final data release of the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). We independently analyse the LOWZ and CMASS galaxy samples: the LOWZ sample contains contains 361 762 galaxies with an effective redshift of $z_{\rm LOWZ}=0.32$; the CMASS sample consists of 777 202 galaxies with an effective redshift of $z_{\rm CMASS}=0.57$. We extract the BAO peak position from the monopole power spectrum moment, $α_0$, and from the $μ^2$ moment, $α_2$, where $μ$ is the cosine of the angl…
Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) provide a robust standard ruler, and can be used to constrain the expansion history of the Universe at low redshift. Standard BAO analyses return a model-independent measurement of the expansion rate and the comoving angular diameter distance as function of redshift, normalized by the sound horizon at radiation drag. However, this methodology relies on anisotropic distance distortions of a fixed, pre-computed template (obtained in a given fiducial cosmology) in order to fit the observations. Therefore, it may be possible that extensions to the consensus $Λ$CD…
Leveraging the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) feature present in clustering 2-point statistics, we aim to measure cosmological distances independently of the underlying background cosmological model. However this inference is complicated by late-time non-linearities that introduce model and tracer dependencies in the clustering correlation function and power spectrum, which must be properly accounted for. With this in mind, we introduce the "Purely-Geometric-BAO," which provides a rigorous tool to measure cosmological distances without assuming a specific background cosmology. We focus on …
We examine the impact of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale measurements on the discrepancy between the value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) inferred from the local distance ladder and from Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. While the BAO data alone cannot constrain $H_0$, we show that combining the latest BAO results with WMAP, Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), or South Pole Telescope (SPT) CMB data produces values of $H_0$ that are $2.4-3.1σ$ lower than the distance ladder, independent of Planck, and that this downward pull was less apparent in some earlier analyses that us…
During this work, an interacting chameleon like scalar field scenario, by considering SNeIa, CMB, BAO and OHD data sets is investigated. In fact, the investigation is realized by introducing an ansatz for the effective dark energy equation of state, which mimics the behaviour of chameleon like models. Based on this assumption, some cosmological parameters including Hubble, deceleration and coincidence parameters in such mechanism are analysed. It is realized that, to estimate the free parameters of a theoretical model, by regarding the systematic errors it better the whole of the above observa…
Three-dimensional correlations of the Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest and cross correlations between the Ly$α$ forest and quasars have been measured on large scales, allowing a precise measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature at redshifts $z>2$. These 3D correlations are often modelled using linear perturbation theory, but full-shape analyses to extract cosmological information beyond BAO will require more realistic models capable of describing non-linearities present at smaller scales. We present a measurement of the Ly$α$ forest flux power spectrum from large hydrodynamic simula…
In the upcoming era of high-precision galaxy surveys, it becomes necessary to understand the impact of redshift uncertainties on cosmological observables. In this paper we explore the effect of sub-percent photometric redshift errors (photo-$z$ errors) on galaxy clustering and baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO). Using analytic expressions and results from $1\,000$ $N$-body simulations, we show how photo-$z$ errors modify the amplitude of moments of the 2D power spectrum, their variances, the amplitude of BAO, and the cosmological information in them. We find that: a) photo-$z$ errors suppres…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the distribution of galaxies provides a fundamental standard ruler which is widely used to constrain cosmological parameters. In most analyses, the comoving length of the ruler is inferred from a combination of CMB observations and theory. However, this inferred length may be biased by various non-standard effects in early universe physics; this can lead to biased inferences of cosmological parameters such as H_0, Ω_m and w, so it would be valuable to measure the absolute BAO length by combining a galaxy redshift survey and a suitable direct low…
We perform a tomographic baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) analysis using the monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole of the redshift-space galaxy power spectrum measured from the pre-reconstructed combined galaxy sample of the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release (DR)12 covering the redshift range of $0.20<z<0.75$. By allowing for overlap between neighbouring redshift slices, we successfully obtained the isotropic and anisotropic BAO distance measurements within nine redshift slices to a precision of $1.5\%-3.4\%$ for $D_V/r_…
We present improved methodology for including covariance matrices in the error budget of Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) galaxy clustering measurements, revisiting Data Release 9 (DR9) analyses, and describing a method that is used in DR10/11 analyses presented in companion papers. The precise analysis method adopted is becoming increasingly important, due to the precision that BOSS can now reach: even using as many as 600 mock catalogues to estimate covariance of 2-point clustering measurements can still lead to an increase in the errors of ~20%, depending on how the cosmologic…
We analyse the MOdified Gravity (MOG) theory, proposed by Moffat, in a cosmological context. We use data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Cosmic Chronometers (CC) to test MOG predictions. For this, we perform $χ^2$ tests considering fixed values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, the self-interaction potential of one of the scalar fields in the theory. Our results show that the MOG theory is in agreement with all data sets for some particular values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, being the BAO data set the most powerful tool to test MOG predictions, due to its constraining power.
We investigate two new observational perspectives in the context of torsional gravitational modification of general relativity, i.e., the $f(T)$ gravity: i) We use Pantheon data of type Ia supernovae motivated by a time variation of the Newton's constant on the supernovae distance modulus relation, and find that a joint analysis with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), i.e., Pantheon+BAO+BBN, provides constraints on the effective free parameter of the theory to be well compatible with the $Λ$CDM prediction; ii) We present the framework of $f(T)$ gravity at th…
