We review the recent proof of the N.Takahashi's conjecture on genus $0$ Gromov-Witten invariants of $(\mathbb{P}^2, E)$, where $E$ is a smooth cubic curve in the complex projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$. The main idea is the use of the algebraic notion of scattering diagram as a bridge between the world of Gromov-Witten invariants of $(\mathbb{P}^2, E)$ and the world of moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$. Using this bridge, the N.Takahashi's conjecture can be translated into a manageable question about moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$.
This survey is based on a three hours lecture series given as part of the Beijing-Zurich moduli workshop in Beijing, 9-12 September 2019.
We study torsion free sheaves on integral projective curves with at most ordinary cusps as singularities. Adjusting Seshadri's structure from the nodal case to this one, we describe these sheaves by means of a triple defined in the normalization of the curve.
We classify (semi)stable sheaves on a rational curve with one node. The results are based on the classification of indecomposable torsion-free sheaves due to Drozd and Greuel "Tame and wild projective curves and classification of vector bundles", where the sheaves are described in terms of certain combinatorial data. We translate the condition of (semi)stability into this combinatorial language and solve the so obtained problem.
We prove the existence of fine moduli spaces of simple coherent sheaves on families of irreducible curves. Our proof is based on the existence of a universal upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of such sheaves, which we provide.
As a continuation of the work of Freiermuth and Trautmann, we study the geometry of the moduli space of stable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with Hilbert polynomial $4m+1$. The moduli space has three irreducible components whose generic elements are, respectively, sheaves supported on rational quartic curves, on elliptic quartic curves, or on planar quartic curves. The main idea of the proof is to relate the moduli space with the Hilbert scheme of curves by wall crossing. We present all stable sheaves contained in the intersections of the three irreducible components. We also classify stable sheav…
We prove formulae for the motives of stacks of coherent sheaves of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's triangulated category of mixed motives with rational coefficients.
We show that for any stable sheaf $E$ of slope $> 2g-1$ on a smooth, projective curve of genus $g$, the associated Picard sheaf $\hat{E}$ on the Picard variety of the curve is stable. We introduce a homological tool for testing semistability of Picard sheaves.
In this paper we give a survey about the classification of vector bundles and torsion free sheaves on degenerations of elliptic curves. Coherent sheaves on singular curves of arithmetic genus one can be studied using the technique of matrix problems or via Fourier-Mukai transforms, both methods are discussed here. Moreover, we include new proofs of some classical results about vector bundles on elliptic curves.
Let $Y$ be a geometrically irreducible reduced projective curve defined over real numbers. Let $U_Y$ (respectively, $U'_Y$) be the moduli space of geometrically stable torsionfree sheaves (respectively, locally free sheaves) on $Y$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$. Define $χ\, =\, d+n(1-\text{genus}(Y))$, where $\text{genus}(Y)$ is the arithmetic genus. If $2n$ is coprime to $χ$, then there is a Poincare sheaf over $U_Y\times Y$. If $2n$ is not coprime to $χ$, then there is no Poincare sheaf over any nonempty open subset of $U'_Y$.
We study the moduli space of stable sheaves of Euler characteristic 2, supported on curves of arithmetic genus 2 contained in a smooth quadric surface. We show that this moduli space is rational. We compute its Betti numbers and we give a classification of the stable sheaves involving locally free resolutions.
These are the notes accompanying 13 lectures given by the authors at the Clay Mathematics Institute Summer School 2014 in Madrid. The notes give an introduction into the theory of $\ell$-adic sheaves with emphasis on their ramification theory on curves.
We consider non-commutative deformations of sheaves on algebraic varieties. We develop some tools to determine parameter algebras of versal non-commutative deformations for partial simple collections and the structure sheaves of smooth rational curves. We apply them to universal flopping contractions of length 2 and higher. We confirm Donovan-Wemyss conjecture in the case of deformations of Laufer's flops.
Sheaves on non-reduced curves can appear in moduli space of 1-dimensional semistable sheaves over a surface, and moduli space of Higgs bundles as well. We estimate the dimension of the stack $\mathbf{M}_{X}(nC,χ)$ of pure sheaves supported at the non-reduced curve $nC~(n\geq 2)$ with $C$ an integral curve on $X$. We prove that the Hilbert-Chow morphism $h_{L,χ}:\mathcal{M}^H_X(L,χ)\rightarrow |L|$ sending each semistable 1-dimensional sheaf to its support have all its fibers of the same dimension for $X$ Fano or with trivial canonical line bundle and $|L|$ contains integral curves.
Some coherent sheaves on projective varieties have a non reduced versal deformation space. For example, this is the case for most unstable rank 2 vector bundles on ${\mathbb P}_2$. In particular, it may happen that some moduli spaces of stable sheaves are non reduced. We consider the case of some sheaves on ribbons (double structures on smooth projective curves): the quasi locally free sheaves of rigid type. Le $E$ be such a sheaf. -- Let ${\mathcal E}$ be a flat family of sheaves containing $E$. We find that it is a reduced deformation of $E$ when some canonical family associated to ${\mathca…
We give an algorithm to determine whether a kernel sheaf over a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field is semistable. The algorithm uses symmetric powers to make destabilizing subbundles visible as global sections.
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
We study the moduli space of Gieseker semi-stable sheaves on the complex projective plane supported on sextic curves and having Euler characteristic one. We determine locally free resolutions of length one for all such sheaves. We decompose the moduli space into strata which occur naturally as quotients modulo actions of certain algebraic groups. In some cases we give concrete geometric descriptions of the strata.
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of large complete subvarieties in moduli spaces of rank two stable sheaves with arbitrary $c_1$ and sufficiently large $c_2$ on algebraic surfaces. Then we study the restriction of these sheaves to curves of high degree embedded in the surface. In the final section we gives a relation with the spin strata defined by Pidstrigach and Tyurin.
In this article, we study the deformation theory of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve. As a special case, the infinitesimal deformation of these objects gives the tangent space of the corresponding moduli spaces, which can be used to calculate the dimension of the corresponding moduli space. We show that the deformation of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve is equivalent to the deformation of generalized parabolic bundles and generalized parabolic Hitchin pairs over the normalization of the nodal curve respectively.
We give the full answer to the question: on which curves the category of coherent sheaves $\Coh_{X}$ is tame. The answer is: these are just the curves from the list of Drozd-Greuel. Moreover, in this case the derived category $D^{-}(\Coh_{X})$ is also tame. We give an explicit description of the objects of this category as well as of the categories $D^{b}(\Coh_{X})$, $\Coh_{X}$. Among the coherent sheaves we describe the vector bundles, torsion-free sheaves, mixed sheaves and skyscraper sheaves.
We study the moduli space of stable sheaves of Euler characteristic 1, supported on curves of arithmetic genus 2 contained in a smooth quadric surface. We show that this moduli space is rational. We give a classification of the stable sheaves involving locally free resolutions or extensions. We compute the Betti numbers by studying the variation of the moduli spaces of alpha-semi-stable pairs.
Deligne and Kato proved a formula computing the dimension of the nearby cycles complex of an l-adic sheaf on a relative curve over an excellent strictly henselian trait. In this article, we reprove this formula using Abbes-Saito's ramification theory.
This paper extends a number of known results on slope-semistable sheaves from the classical case to the setting where polarisations are given by movable curve classes. As applications, we obtain new flatness results for reflexive sheaves on singular varieties, as well as a characterisation of finite quotients of Abelian varieties via a Chern class condition.
In this article, we prove the Hodge conjecture for a desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2, semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a very general irreducible nodal curve of genus at least 2. We also compute the algebraic Poincare polynomial of the associated cohomology ring.
We study the Tannakian properties of the category of perverse sheaves on elliptic curves endowed with the convolution product. We establish that for certain sheaves with unipotent local monodromy over seven points the corresponding Tannaka group is isomorphic to $G_2$. This monodromy approach generalizes a result of Katz on the existence of $G_2$-motives in the middle cohomology of deformations of Beauville surfaces.
This work deals with an algebro-geometric theory of solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation based on torsion free coherent sheaves of Lie algebras on Weierstrass cubic curves.
We study the moduli space of stable sheaves of Euler characteristic 1 supported on curves of bidegree (3, 3) contained in a smooth quadric surface. We show that this moduli space is rational. We compute its Betti numbers by studying the variation of the moduli spaces of alpha-semi-stable pairs.
A primitive multiple curve is a Cohen-Macaulay irreducible projective curve Y that can be locally embedded in a smooth surface, and such that C=Y_red is smooth. In this case, L=I_C/I_C^2 is a line bundle on C. If Y is of multiplicity 2, i.e. if I_C^2=0, Y is called a ribbon. If Y is a ribbon and h^0(L^{-2})>0, then Y can be deformed to smooth curves, but in general a coherent sheaf on Y cannot be deformed in coherent sheaves on the smooth curves. A ribbon with associated line bundle L such that deg(L)=-d<0 can be deformed to reduced curves having 2 irreducible components if L can be written as…
The conjectural equivalence of curve counting on Calabi-Yau 3-folds via stable maps and stable pairs is discussed. By considering Calabi-Yau 3-folds with K3 fibrations, the correspondence naturally connects curve and sheaf counting on K3 surfaces. New results and conjectures (with D. Maulik) about descendent integration on K3 surfaces are announced. The recent proof of the Yau-Zaslow conjecture is surveyed. The paper accompanies my lecture at the Clay research conference in Cambridge, MA in May 2008.
We prove an equivariant Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula. This formula may be viewed as an étale analogue of well-known formulas for Zariski sheaves generalizing the classical Chevalley-Weil formula. We give a new approach to those formulas (first proved by Ellingsrud/Lønsted, Nakajima, Kani and Ksir) which can also be applied in the étale case.
In this paper we show that the relative canonical sheaf of a relatively minimal fibration of curves over a curve is semi-ample ; in fact, its m-tensored product is base point free for any m > 1. We use Koszul cohomology with it to prove that the relative canonical ring of the fibration is generated in degree up to five.
We show that the universal plane curve M of fixed degree d > 2 can be seen as a closed subvariety in a certain Simpson moduli space of 1-dimensional sheaves on a projective plane contained in the stable locus. The universal singular locus coincides with the subvariety of M consisting of sheaves that are not locally free on their support. It turns out that the blow up of M along M' may be naturally seen as a compactification of M_B = M\M' by vector bundles (on support).
We investigate the geometry of the Simpson moduli space M of stable sheaves on P_3 with Hilbert polynomial H(m)=3m+1 and describe explicitly the two smooth, rational components, their 11-dimensional smooth, transversal intersection and the relation between M and the Hilbert scheme Hilb_H(P_3) of cubic space curves. We also compute the Betti numbers of the Chow groups of the moduli space M.
We find some equivalences of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a Gorenstein genus one curve that preserve the (semi)-stability of pure dimensional sheaves. Using them we establish new identifications between certain Simpson moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the curve. For rank zero, the moduli spaces are symmetric powers of the curve whilst for a fixed positive rank there are only a finite number of non-isomorphic spaces. We prove similar results for the relative semistable moduli spaces on an arbitrary genus one fibration with no conditions either on the base or on the total sp…
Motivated by the computation of the BPS-invariants on a local Calabi-Yau threefold suggested by S. Katz, we compute the Chow ring and the cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $4m+1$ on the projective plane. As a byproduct, we obtain the total Chern class and Euler characteristics of all line bundles, which provide a numerical data for the strange duality on the plane.
We show that the moduli space M(r,c) of semistable sheaves on n-dimensional projective space with support of dimension one, with multiplicity r and with Euler characteristic c is isomorphic to M(r,-c).
In this article, we prove that the Swan conductor of an étale sheaf on a smooth variety defined by Abbes and Saito's logarithmic ramification theory can be computed by its classical Swan conductors after restricting it to curves. It extends the same result for rank 1 sheaves due to Barrientos. As an application, we give a logarithmic ramification version of generalizations of Deligne and Laumon's lower semi-continuity property for Swan conductors of étale sheaves on relative curves to higher relative dimensions in a geometric situation.
We study the moduli space of stable sheaves of Euler characteristic 1 supported on curves of arithmetic genus 3 contained in a smooth quadric surface. We show that this moduli space is rational. We compute its Betti numbers by studying the variation of the moduli spaces of alpha-semi-stable pairs. We classify the stable sheaves using locally free resolutions or extensions. We give a global description: the moduli space is obtained from a certain flag Hilbert scheme by performing two flips followed by a blow-down.
We consider the category $\operatorname{Qcoh}\mathbb{X}$ of quasicoherent sheaves where $\mathbb{X}$ is a weighted noncommutative regular projective curve over a field $k$. This category is a hereditary, locally noetherian Grothendieck category. We classify all indecomposable pure-injective sheaves and all cotilting sheaves of slope $\infty$. In the cases of nonnegative orbifold Euler characteristic this leads to a classification of pure-injective indecomposable sheaves and a description of all large cotilting sheaves in $\operatorname{Qcoh}\mathbb{X}$.
This paper is the text of a lecture given at the Catania conference on Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, in honor of the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. It analyses the correspondences between equivalence classes of objects related to the projective 3-space ${\bf P}^3_k$ over a field $k$ : - vector bundles ${\cal F}$ such that $H_*^2({\cal F})=0$ up to stable equivalence - coherent sheaves of projective dimension $\leq 1$ up to pseudo-equivalence - finite length graded $k[X,Y,Z,T]$-modules, modulo isomorphism - biliaison classes of locally Cohen-Macaulay curves. In particular, it lead…
In order to study wall crossing formula of Donaldson type invariants on the blown-up plane, Nakajima-Yoshioka constructed a sequence of blow-up/blow-down diagrams connecting the moduli space of torsion free framed sheaves on projective plane, and that on its blow-up. In this paper, we prove that Nakajima-Yoshioka's diagram realizes the minimal model program. Furthermore, we obtain a fully-faithful embedding between the derived categories of these moduli spaces.
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to a crucial error in the proofs. The error has been corrected and the paper has been expanded in arXiv:0910.5327
Let U^{'s}_{L}(n,d) be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ and fixed determinant L of degree d on a nodal curve Y. The moduli space of semistable vector bundles of rank n and degree $d$ will be denoted by U'_Y(n,d). We calculate the Brauer groups of U^{'s}_{L}(n,d)$. We study the question of rationality of $U^{'s}_{L}(n,d)$ and $U'_Y(n,d)$.
Recently, the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence was generalized in the context of general holonomic D-modules by A. D'Agnolo and M. Kashiwara. Namely, they proved that their enhanced de Rham functor gives a fully faithfully embedding of the derived category of cohomologically holonomic complexes of D-modules into the derived category of complexes of real constructible enhanced ind-sheaves. In this paper, we study a condition when a complex of real constructible enhanced ind-sheaves $K$ is induced by a cohomologically holonomic complex of D-modules. We characterize such $K$ in terms of the restric…
We give bounds for the cohomology of constructible sheaves on the moduli stacks M_{g,n} over the complex field. This enables us recover Harer's bound for the virtual cohomological dimension of the associated mapping class groups as well the theorem of Diaz on complete subvarieties of M_g. We also obtain such bounds for any open subset of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M_{g,n} that is a union of strata. Our proof yields a template for obtaining similar bounds for the cohomological dimension for quasicoherent sheaves on M_{g,n}.
Let $\mathbb{X}$ be a weighted noncommutative regular projective curve over a field $k$. The category $\operatorname{Qcoh}\mathbb{X}$ of quasicoherent sheaves is a hereditary, locally noetherian Grothendieck category. We classify all tilting sheaves which have a non-coherent torsion subsheaf. In case of nonnegative orbifold Euler characteristic we classify all large (that is, non-coherent) tilting sheaves and the corresponding resolving classes. In particular we show that in the elliptic and in the tubular cases every large tilting sheaf has a well-defined slope.
We classify all Gieseker semi-stable sheaves on the complex projective plane that have dimension 1 and multiplicity 6. We decompose their moduli spaces into strata which occur naturally as quotients modulo actions of certain algebraic groups. In most cases we give concrete geometric descriptions of the strata.
This article treats compactifications of the space of generalized spin curves. Generalized spin curves, or $r$-spin curves, are pairs $(X,L)$ with $X$ a smooth curve and $L$ a line bundle whose r-th tensor power is isomorphic to the canonical bundle of $X.$ These are a natural generalization of $2$-spin curves (algebraic curves with a theta-characteristic), which have been of interest recently, in part because of their applications to fermionic string theory. Three different compactifications over $\Bbb{Z}[1/r],$ all using torsion-free sheaves, are constructed. All three yield algebraic stacks…
There exists the Krichever map from the set of quintets (C,p,F,t,e) (where C is an integral and complete algebraic curve, p a smooth rational point, F a rank 2 torsion free coherent sheaf on C, t a local formal parameter in p and e a formal trivialization of F around p) to the infinite Grassmanian of $k((z)) \oplus k((z))$. We describe the images of quintets with (semi)stable sheaves F in terms of Plucker coordinates and get some analog of GIT Hilbert-Mumford numerical criterion with respect to actions of some 1-parametric subgroups of the group $SL(2,k[[z]])$ on the determinant bundle of the …
This note is written for the Festschrift in honor of Professor Christer Kiselman. Multiplier ideal sheaves identify the location and the extent of the failure of crucial estimates. In this note we will discuss and explain the historic evolution of the notion of multiplier ideal sheaves, especially the interpretation from the viewpoint of destabilizing subsheaves in the context of terminating or bounding an infinite process. We will also discuss the approach of constructing rational curves in Fano manifolds by using dynamic multiplier ideal sheaves and singularity-magnifying complex Monge-Amper…
