In this paper we focus on the stochastic Euler-Poincaré equations with pseudo-differential/multiplicative noise. We first establish two new cancellation properties on pseudo-differential operators, which play a key role in energy estimate. Then, we obtain results on local solution, blow-up criterion and global existence. The interplay between stability on exiting times and continuous dependence of solution on initial data are also studied for the multiplicative noise case.
We establish the local existence of pathwise solutions for the stochastic Euler equations in a three-dimensional bounded domain with slip boundary conditions and a very general nonlinear multiplicative noise. In the two-dimensional case we obtain the global existence of these solutions with additive or linear-multiplicative noise. Lastly, we show that, in the three dimensional case, the addition of linear multiplicative noise provides a regularizing effect; the global existence of solutions occurs with high probability if the initial data is sufficiently small, or if the noise coefficient is s…
We study the Euler-Poincaré equations that are the regularized Euler equations derived from the Euler-Poincaré framework. It is noteworthy to remark that the Euler-Poincaré equations are a generalization of two well-known regularizations, the vortex blob method and the Euler-$α$ equations. We show the global existence of a unique weak solution for the two-dimensional (2D) Euler-Poincaré equations with the initial vorticity in the space of Radon measure. This is a remarkable feature of these equations since the existence of weak solutions with the Radon measure initial vorticity has not been es…
In this paper we mainly investigate the initial value problem of the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations. We first present a new blow-up result to the system for a special class of smooth initial data by using the rotational invariant properties of the system. Then, we prove that the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations is ill-posed in critical Besov spaces by a contradiction argument. Finally, we verify the system possesses a class of peakon solutions in the sense of distributions.
We consider the Euler system describing the motion of a compressible fluid driven by a multiplicative white noise. We identify a large class of initial data for which the problem is ill posed - there exist infinitely many global in time weak solutions. The solutions are adapted to the noise and satisfy the entropy admissibility criterion.
In this paper, we investigate the continuous dependence on initial data of solutions to the Euler-Poincaré system. By constructing a sequence approximate solutions and calculating the error terms, we show that the data-to-solution map is not uniformly continuous in Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $s>1+\frac d2$.
We develop the necessary tools, including a notion of logarithmic derivative for curves in homogeneous spaces, for deriving a general class of equations including Euler-Poincaré equations on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces. Orbit invariants play an important role in this context and we use these invariants to prove global existence and uniqueness results for a class of PDE. This class includes Euler-Poincaré equations that have not yet been considered in the literature as well as integrable equations like Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, $μ$CH and $μ$DP equations, and the geodesic equations…
We consider the Euler-Poincaré equation on $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2$. For a large class of smooth initial data we prove that the corresponding solution blows up in finite time. This settles an open problem raised by Chae and Liu \cite{Chae Liu}. Our analysis exhibits some new concentration mechanism and hidden monotonicity formula associated with the Euler-Poincaré flow. In particular we show the abundance of blowups emanating from smooth initial data with certain sign properties. No size restrictions are imposed on the data. We also showcase a class of initial data for which the corresponding s…
In this paper we study the Euler-Poincaré equations in $\Bbb R^N$. We prove local existence of weak solutions in $W^{2,p}(\Bbb R^N),$ $p>N$, and local existence of unique classical solutions in $H^k (\Bbb R^N)$, $k>N/2+3$, as well as a blow-up criterion. For the zero dispersion equation($α=0$) we prove a finite time blow-up of the classical solution. We also prove that as the dispersion parameter vanishes, the weak solution converges to a solution of the zero dispersion equation with sharp rate as $α\to0$, provided that the limiting solution belongs to $C([0, T);H^k(\Bbb R^N))$ with $k>N/2 +3$…
The Green Nagdhi equations are frequently used as a model of the wave-like behaviour of the free surface of a fluid, or the interface between two homogeneous fluids of differing densities. Here we show that their multilayer extension arises naturally from a framework based on the Euler Poincare theory under an ansatz of columnar motion. The framework also extends to the travelling wave solutions of the equations. We present numerical solutions of the travelling wave problem in a number of flow regimes. We find that the free surface and multilayer waves can exhibit intriguing differences compar…
We derive a new variational principle, leading to a new momentum map and a new multisymplectic formulation for a family of Euler--Poincaré equations defined on the Virasoro-Bott group, by using the inverse map (also called `back-to-labels' map). This family contains as special cases the well-known Korteweg-de Vries, Camassa-Holm, and Hunter-Saxton soliton equations. In the conclusion section, we sketch opportunities for future work that would apply the new Clebsch momentum map with $2$-cocycles derived here to investigate a new type of interplay among nonlinearity, dispersion and noise.
We define a Gaussian invariant measure for the two-dimensional averaged-Euler equation and show the existence of its solution with initial conditions on the support of the measure. An invariant surface measure on the level sets of the energy is also constructed, as well as the corresponding flow. Poincaré recurrence theorem is used to show that the flow returns infinitely many times in a neighbourhood of the initial state.
We prove the existence of a unique local strong solution to the stochastic compressible Euler system with nonlinear multiplicative noise. This solution exists up to a positive stopping time and is strong in both the PDE and probabilistic sense. Based on this existence result, we study the inviscid limit of the stochastic compressible Navier--Stokes system. As the viscosity tends to zero, any sequence of finite energy weak martingale solutions converges to the compressible Euler system.
We investigate higher-order geometric $k$-splines for template matching on Lie groups. This is motivated by the need to apply diffeomorphic template matching to a series of images, e.g., in longitudinal studies of Computational Anatomy. Our approach formulates Euler-Poincaré theory in higher-order tangent spaces on Lie groups. In particular, we develop the Euler-Poincaré formalism for higher-order variational problems that are invariant under Lie group transformations. The theory is then applied to higher-order template matching and the corresponding curves on the Lie group of transformations …
We use methods from exterior differential systems (EDS) to develop a geometric theory of scalar, first-order Lagrangian functionals and their associated Euler-Lagrange PDEs, subject to contact transformations. The first chapter contains an introduction of the classical Poincare-Cartan form in the context of EDS, followed by proofs of classical results, including a solution to the relevant inverse problem, Noether's theorem on symmetries and conservation laws, and several aspects of minimal hypersurfaces. In the second chapter, the equivalence problem for Poincare-Cartan forms is solved, giving…
Strong existence and pathwise uniqueness of solutions with $L^{\infty}$-vorticity of 2D stochastic Euler equations is proved. The noise is multiplicative and involves first derivatives. A Lagrangian approach is implemented, where a stochastic flow solving a nonlinear flow equation is constructed. Stability under regularization is also proved.
Smooth solutions of the incompressible Euler equations are characterized by the property that circulation around material loops is conserved. This is the Kelvin theorem. Likewise, smooth solutions of Navier-Stokes are characterized by a generalized Kelvin's theorem, introduced by Constantin-Iyer (2008). In this note, we introduce a class of stochastic fluid equations, whose smooth solutions are characterized by natural extensions of the Kelvin theorems of their deterministic counterparts, which hold along certain noisy flows. These equations are called the stochastic Euler-Poincaré and stochas…
