We investigate the turbulence driving mode of ionizing radiation from massive stars on the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). We run hydrodynamical simulations of a turbulent cloud impinged by a plane-parallel ionization front. We find that the ionizing radiation forms pillars of neutral gas reminiscent of those seen in observations. We quantify the driving mode of the turbulence in the neutral gas by calculating the driving parameter $b$, which is characterised by the relation $σ_s^2 = \ln({1+b^2\mathcal{M}^2})$ between the variance of the logarithmic density contrast $σ_s^2$ (where $s = \ln({ρ/ρ_0})$ with the gas density $ρ$ and its average $ρ_0$), and the turbulent Mach number $\mathcal{M}$. Previous works have shown that $b\sim1/3$ indicates solenoidal (divergence-free) driving and $b\sim1$ indicates compressive (curl-free) driving, with $b\sim1$ producing up to ten times higher star formation rates than $b\sim1/3$. The time variation of $b$ in our study allows us to infer that ionizing radiation is inherently a compressive turbulence driving source, with a time-averaged $b\sim 0.76 \pm 0.08$. We also investigate the value of $b$ of the pillars, where star formation is expected to occur, and find that the pillars are characterised by a natural mixture of both solenoidal and compressive turbulent modes ($b\sim0.4$) when they form, and later evolve into a more compressive turbulent state with $b\sim0.5$--$0.6$. A virial parameter analysis of the pillar regions supports this conclusion. This indicates that ionizing radiation from massive stars may be able to trigger star formation by producing predominately compressive turbulent gas in the pillars.
We present high angular and spectral resolution HI 21~cm line observations toward the cometary-shaped compact HII region G213.880-11.837 in the GGD~14 complex. The kinematics and morphology of the photodissociated region, traced by the HI line emission, reveal that the neutral gas is part of an expanding flow. The kinematics of the HI gas along the major axis of G213.880-11.837 shows that the emission is very extended toward the SE direction, reaching LSR radial velocities in the tail of about 14 km/s. The ambient LSR radial velocity of the molecular gas is 11.5 km/s, which suggests a champagne…
We investigate the scale dependence of fluctuations inside a realistic model of an evolving turbulent HII region and to what extent these may be studied observationally. We find that the multiple scales of energy injection from champagne flows and the photoionization of clumps and filaments leads to a flatter spectrum of fluctuations than would be expected from top-down turbulence driven at the largest scales. The traditional structure function approach to the observational study of velocity fluctuations is shown to be incapable of reliably determining the velocity power spectrum of our simula…
The tight correlation between turbulence and luminosity in Giant HII Regions is not well understood. While the luminosity is due to the UV radiation from the massive stars in the ionizing clusters, it is not clear what powers the turbulence. Observations of the two prototypical Giant HII Regions in the local Universe, 30 Doradus and NGC604, show that part of the kinetic energy of the nebular gas comes from the combined stellar winds of the most massive stars - the cluster winds, but not all. We present a study of the kinematics of 30 Doradus based on archival VLT FLAMES/GIRAFFE data and new hi…
We have measured the fractal dimensions of the Giant HII Regions Hubble X and Hubble V in NGC6822 using images obtained with the Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). These measures are associated with the turbulence observed in these regions, which is quantified through the velocity dispersion of emission lines in the visible. Our results suggest low turbulence behaviour.
Aims. To increase the observational samples of star formation around expanding Hii regions, we analyzed the interstellar medium and star formation around N22. Methods. We used data extracted from the seven large-scale surveys from infrared to radio wavelengths. In addition we used the JCMT observations of the J = 3-2 line of 12CO emission data released on CADC and the 12CO J = 2-1 and J =3-2 lines observed by the KOSMA 3 m telescope. We performed a multiwavelength study of bubble N22. Results. A molecular shell composed of several clumps agrees very well with the border of N22, suggesting that…
Observations of the four $^{2}Π_{3/2},~J = 3/2$~ground state transitions of the hydroxyl radical (OH) have emerged as an informative tracer of molecular gas in the Galactic ISM. We discuss an OH spectral feature known as the `flip', in which the satellite lines at 1612 and 1720\,MHz flip -- one from emission to absorption and the other the reverse -- across a closely blended double feature. We highlight 30 examples of the flip from the literature, 27 of which exhibit the same orientation with respect to velocity: the 1720\,MHz line is seen in emission at more negative velocities. These same ex…
Hydrodynamical instabilities are believed to power some of the small scale (0.1-10 pc) turbulence and chemical mixing in the interstellar medium. Identifying such instabilities has always been difficult but recent observations of a wavelike structure (the Ripples) in the Orion nebula have been interpreted as a signature of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI), occurring at the interface between the HII region and the molecular cloud. However, this has not been verified theoretically. In this letter, we investigate theoretically the stability of this interface using observational constraints …
We present 250~GHz continuum and H29alpha line data toward W49N:A2, a hypercompact HII region ionized by an O9 star. The data obtained with ALMA at a resolution of ~0"05 (600 au) confirmed the presence of an ionized ring with a radius of~700 au inclined by ~50degree (0degree for pole-on). It has a width of ~1000 au and is relatively flat with a scale height of less than several hundred au. The tilted ring, or the apparent ellipse, has a prominent velocity difference between its NW and SE ridges along the minor axis, suggesting that it is expanding in the equatorial plane at a velocity of 13.2 …
We present results of the mapping observations covering a large area of 1 square degree around W40 and Serpens South carried out in the 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), C18O (J=1-0), CCS (J_{N}=8_{7}-7_{6}), and N_2H+ (J=1-0) emission lines with the 45 m Nobeyama Radio Telescope. W40 is a blistered Hii region, and Serpens South is an infrared dark cloud accompanied by a young cluster. The relationship between these two regions which are separated by ~20' on the sky has not been clear so far. We found that the C18O emission is distributed smoothly throughout the W40 and Serpens South regions, and it…
We investigate the resolution dependence of HII regions expanding past their Strömgren spheres. We find that their structure and size, and the radial momentum that they attain at a given time, is in good agreement with analytical expectations if the Strömgren radius is resolved with $dr \leq 0.3\,R_{\rm st}$. If this is not satisfied, the radial momentum may be over- or under-estimated by factors up to 10 or more. Our work has significance for the amount of radial momentum that a HII region can impart to the ambient medium in numerical simulations, and thus on the relative importance of ionizi…
Revealing the 3D dynamics of HII regions and their associated molecular clouds is important for understanding the longstanding problem as to how stellar feedback affects the density structure and kinematics of the interstellar medium. We employed observations of the HII region RCW 120 in [CII], observed within the SOFIA legacy program FEEDBACK, and the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO (3$\to$2) lines, obtained with APEX. In addition we used HI data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. Two radiative transfer models were used to fit the observed data. A line profile analysis with the 1D non-LTE radia…
We investigate the interplay between the ionization radiation from massive stars and the turbulence inside the surrounding molecular gas thanks to 3D numerical simulations. We used the 3D hydrodynamical code HERACLES to model an initial turbulent medium that is ionized and heated by an ionizing source. Three different simulations are performed with different mean Mach numbers (1, 2 and 4). A non-equilibrium model for the ionization and the associated thermal processes was used. This revealed to be crucial when turbulent ram pressure is of the same order as the ionized-gas pressure. The density…
Magnetic fields in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) are a key element in understanding Galactic dynamics, but there are many observational challenges. One useful probe for studying the magnetic field component parallel to the line of sight (LoS) is Faraday rotation of linearly polarized radio synchrotron emission, combined with H$α$ observations. HII regions are the perfect laboratories to probe such magnetic fields as they are localized in space, and are well-defined sources often with known distances and measurable electron densities. We chose the HII region Sharpless 2-27 (Sh 2-27). …
The relative alignments of mid-infrared traced Galactic bubbles are compared to the orientation of the mean Galactic magnetic field in the disk. The orientations of bubbles in the northern Galactic plane were measured and are consistent with random orientations - no preferential alignment with respect to the Galactic disk was found. A subsample of HII region driven Galactic bubbles was identified, and as a single population they show random orientations. When this subsample was further divided into subthermal and suprathermal HII regions, based on hydrogren radio recombination linewidths, the …
As part of our ongoing HII Region Discovery Survey (HRDS), we report the Green Bank Telescope detection of 148 new angularly-large Galactic HII regions in radio recombination line (RRL) emission. Our targets are located at a declination greater than -45deg., which corresponds to 266deg. > l > -20deg. at b = 0deg. All sources were selected from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, and have infrared angular diameters >260''. The Galactic distribution of these "large" HII regions is similar to that of the previously-known sample of Galactic HII regions. The large HII region RRL line width an…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey MaNGA program has now obtained integral field spectroscopy for over 10,000 galaxies in the nearby universe. We use the final MaNGA data release DR17 to study the correlation between ionized gas velocity dispersion and galactic star formation rate, finding a tight correlation in which sigma_Ha from galactic HII regions increases significantly from ~ 18-30 km/s broadly in keeping with previous studies. In contrast, sigma_Ha from diffuse ionized gas (DIG) increases more rapidly from 20-60 km/s. Using the statistical power of MaNGA, we investigate these correlations in…
RCW120 is a Galactic HII region having a beautiful ring shape bright in infrared. Our new CO J=1-0 and J=3-2 observations performed with the NANTEN2, Mopra, and ASTE telescopes have revealed that two molecular clouds with a velocity separation of 20km/s are both physically associated with RCW120. The cloud at -8km/s apparently traces the infrared ring, while the other cloud at -28km/s is distributed just outside the opening of the infrared ring, interacting with the HII region as supported by high kinetic temperature of the molecular gas and by the complementary distribution with the ionized g…
We investigate the surroundings of the hypercompact HII region M17 UC1 to probe the physical properties of the associated young stellar objects and the environment of massive star formation. Five of the seven point sources in this region show $L$-band excess emission. Geometric match is found between the H_2 emission and near-IR polarized light in the vicinity of IRS5A, and between the diffuse mid-IR emission and near-IR polarization north of UC1. The H_2 emission is typical for dense PDRs, which are FUV pumped initially and repopulated by collisional de-excitation. The spectral types of IRS5A…
In general, HII regions do not show clear signs of self-enrichment in products from massive stars (M > 8 M_sun). In order to explore why, I modeled the contamination with Wolf-Rayet star ejecta of metal-poor (Z=0.001) HII regions, ionised either by a 10^6 M_sun cluster of coeval stars (cluster 1), or a cluster resulting from continuous star formation at a rate of 1 M_sun yr^-1 (cluster 2). The clusters have Z=0.001 and a Salpeter initial mass function (IMF) from 0.1 to 120 M_sun. Independent one dimensional constant density simulations of the emission-line spectra of unenriched HII regions wer…
In this paper, we extend the study initiated in PaperI by modelling grain ensemble evolution in a dynamical model of an expanding HII region and checking the effects of momentum transfer from dust to gas. The radiation pressure on the dust, the dust drift, and the lug on the gas by the dust are all important process that should be considered simultaneously to describe the dynamics of HII regions. With accounting for the momentum transfer from the dust to the gas, the expansion time of the HII region is notably reduced (for our model of RCW120, the time to reach the observed radius of the HII r…
We investigated the star formation activities in the AFGL333 region, which is in the vicinity of the W4 expanding bubble, by conducting NH3 (1,1), (2,2), and (3,3) mapping observations with the 45 m Nobeyama Radio Telescope at an angular resolution of 75". The morphology of the NH3 (1,1) map shows a bow-shape structure with the size of 2.0 x 0.6 pc as seen in the dust continuum. At the interface between the W4 bubble and the dense NH3 cloud, the compact HII region G134.2+0.8, associated with IRAS02245+6115, is located. Interestingly, just north and south of G134.2+0.8 we found NH3 emission exh…
Using a specialized technique sensitive to the presence of expanding ionized gas we have detected a set of three concentric expanding shells in an HII region in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. After mapping the kinematics in Hα with Fabry-Perot spectroscopy we used slit spectra to measure the intensities of the [SII] doublet at λλ 671.9, 673.1 nm and the [NII] doublet at λλ 645.8, 658.3 nm to corroborate the kinematics and apply diagnostic tests using line ratios. These showed that the expanding shells are shock dominated as would be the case if they had originated with supernova explosions. Est…

We have observed 10 interacting galaxy pairs using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GH$α$FaS (Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system) on the $4.2\rm{m}$ William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma. We present here the H$α$ surface brightness, velocity and velocity dispersion maps for the 10 systems we have not previously observed using this technique, as well as the physical properties (sizes, H$α$ luminosities and velocity dispersion) of 1259 HII regions from the full sample. We also derive the physical properties of 1054 HII regions in a sample of 28 isola…
We use Two Micron All Sky Survey, GLIMPSE, and MIPSGAL survey data to analyze the young stellar object (YSO) and warm dust distribution around several mid-infrared-identified bubbles. We identify YSOs using J-band to 8 um photometry and correlate their distribution relative to the PDR (as traced by diffuse 8 um emission) which we assume to be associated with and surround a HII region. We find that only 20% of the sample HII regions appear to have a significant number of YSOs associated with their PDRs, implying that triggered star formation mechanisms acting on the boundary of the expanding HI…
We use the three-dimensional Athena ionizing radiation-magnetohydrodynamics (IRMHD) code to simulate blister-type HII regions driven by stars on the edge of magnetized gas clouds. We compare these to simulations of spherical HII regions where the star is embedded deep within a cloud, and to non-magnetized simulations of both types, in order to compare their ability to drive turbulence and influence star formation. We find that magnetized blister HII regions can be very efficient at injecting energy into clouds. This is partly a magnetic effect: the magnetic energy added to a cloud by an HII re…
G45.45+0.06 is an ultra-compact HII (UCHII) region extensively studied. It is known that G45.45+0.06 is embedded in a complex of UCHII regions, but up the date, the surrounding ISM in a larger spatial scale has not been analyzed. Using data from large-scale surveys: Two Micron All Sky Survey, GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, MAGPIS and GRS, we performed a multiwavelength study of a region about 7' x 7'in the vicinity of G45.45+0.06. We found that the UCHII complex lies in a border of a larger (diameter of ~ 3') and fainter HII region, which is located at the same distance as G45.45+0.06, ~ 8 kpc. In this wor…
We present the results of HI 21-cm line observations to explore the nature of the high-velocity (HV) HI gas at l ~ 173{\circ} . In low-resolution Hi surveys this HV gas appears as faint, wing-like, HI emission that extends to velocities beyond those allowed by Galactic rotation. We designate this feature FVW (Forbidden Velocity Wing) 172.8+1.5. Our high-resolution (3.'4) Arecibo HI observations show that FVW 172.8+1.5 is composed of knots, filaments, and ring-like structures distributed over an area a few degrees in extent. These HV HI emission features are confined within the limits of the HI…
We present multiwavelength investigation of morphology, physical-environment, stellar contents and star formation activity in the vicinity of star-forming region Sh 2-100. It is found that the Sh 2-100 region contains seven HII regions of ultracompact and compact nature. The present estimation of distance for three HII regions, along with the kinematic distance for others, suggests that all of them belong to the same molecular cloud complex. Using NIR photometry, we identified the most probable ionizing sources of six HII regions. Their approximate photometric spectral type estimates suggest t…
Aims. Expanding HII regions and propagating shocks are common in the environment of young high-mass star-forming complexes. They can compress a pre-existing molecular cloud and trigger the formation of dense cores. We investigate whether these phenomena can explain the formation of high-mass protostars within an infrared dark cloud located at the position of G327.3-0.6 in the Galactic plane, in between two large infrared bubbles and two HII regions. Methods: The region of G327.3-0.6 was imaged at 450 ? m with the CEA P-ArTéMiS bolometer array on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope in C…
A group of four compact HII regions associated with the well-known 50 km/s molecular cloud is the closest site of on-going star formation to the dynamical center of the Galaxy, at a projected distance of ~6 pc. We present a study of ionized gas based on the [NeII] (12.8 micron) line, as well as multi-frequency radio continuum, HST Pa alpha and Spitzer IRAC observations of the most compact member of the HII group, Sgr A East HII D. The radio continuum image at 6cm shows that this source breaks up into two equally bright ionized features, D1 and D2. The SED of the D source is consistent with it …
We present a new set of analytic models for the expansion of HII regions powered by UV photoionisation from massive stars and compare them to a new suite of radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds. To perform these simulations we use the Eulerian adaptive mesh magnetohydrodynamics code RAMSES-RT, including radiative transfer of UV photons. Our analytic models successfully predict the global behaviour of the HII region provided the density and velocity structure of the cloud is known. We give estimates for the HII region behaviour based on a pow…
The ionization feedback from HII regions modifies the properties of high-mass starless clumps (HMSCs, of several hundred to a few thousand solar masses with a size of ~0.1-1 pc), such as temperature and turbulence, on the clump scale. The question of whether the presence of HII regions modifies the core-scale fragmentation and star formation in HMSCs remains to be explored. We aim to investigate the difference of 0.025 pc-scale fragmentation between candidate HMSCs that are strongly impacted by HII regions and less disturbed ones. We also search for evidence of mass shaping and induced star fo…
Winds from young massive stars contribute a large amount of energy to their host molecular clouds. This has consequences for the dynamics and observable structure of star-forming clouds. In this paper, we present radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of turbulent molecular clouds that form individual stars of 30, 60 and 120 solar masses emitting winds and ultraviolet radiation following realistic stellar evolution tracks. We find that winds contribute to the total radial momentum carried by the expanding nebula around the star at 10 % of the level of photoionisation feedback, and have only…
The aim of the present work is to study structure and gas kinematics in the photodissociation regions (PDRs) around the compact HII regions S235A and S235C. We observe the [CII], [13CII] and [OI] line emission, using SOFIA/upGREAT and complement them by data of HCO+ and CO. We use the [13CII] line to measure the optical depth of the [CII] emission, and find that the [CII] line profiles are influenced by self-absorption, while the [13CII] line remains unaffected by these effects. Hence, for dense PDRs, [13CII] emission is a better tracer of gas kinematics. The optical depth of the [CII] line is…
(abbreviated) In the central part of the S254-S258 star forming complex, a dense embedded cluster of very young stellar objects (S255-IR) is sandwiched between the two HII regions S255 and S257. This interesting configuration had led to different speculations such as dynamical ejection of the B-stars from the central cluster or triggered star formation in a cloud that was swept up in the collision zone between the two expanding HII regions. The presence or absence of low-mass stars associated with these B-stars can discriminate between the possible scenarios. We performed a deep Chandra X-ray …
The RCW41 star-forming region is embedded within the Vela Molecular Ridge, hosting a massive stellar cluster surrounded by a conspicuous HII region. Understanding the role of interstellar magnetic fields and studying the newborn stellar population is crucial to build a consistent picture of the physical processes acting on this kind of environment. We have carried out a detailed study of the interstellar polarization toward RCW41, with data from an optical and near-infrared polarimetric survey. Additionally, deep near-infrared images from the NTT 3.5m telescope have been used to study the phot…
We study pre-supernova feedback in a sample of $\sim$ 4700 HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy M83, identified on their H$α$ emission. We pectroscopically identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars populating the star-forming regions. For each HII region, we compute the pressure of ionised gas ($P_{\rm ion}$) and the direct radiation pressure ($P_{\rm dir}$) acting in the region, and investigate how they vary with galactocentric distance, with the physical properties of the region, and with the pressure of the galactic environment ($P_\mathrm{DE}$). For a subset of $\sim$ 500 regions, we also investig…
Context: How do expanding HII regions interact with their environmental cloud? This is one of the central questions driving the SOFIA legacy program FEEDBACK. Here, we present a case study toward the prototypical H{\sc ii} region NGC7538. Methods: With SOFIA we mapped an area of ~210'^2 around NGC7538 in the [CII] line at 1.9THz. Complementary observed atomic carbon [CI] and high-J CO(8-7) data as well as archival NIR/FIR, cm continuum, CO(3-2) and HI data are folded into the analysis. Results: While the overall [CII] morphology follows the general ionized gas, the channel maps show multiple b…
We present multi-scale and multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic HII region S305, which is excited by massive O8.5V and O9.5V stars. Infrared images reveal an extended sphere-like shell (extension ~7.5 pc; at T_d = 17.5-27 K) enclosing the S305 HII region (size ~5.5 pc; age ~1.7 Myr). The extended structure observed in the Herschel temperature map indicates that the molecular environment of S305 is heated by the massive O-type stars. Regularly spaced molecular condensations and dust clumps are investigated toward the edges of the infrared shell, where the PAH and H_2 emission is also o…
We probe the structure and kinematics of two neighbouring H II regions identified as cometary and bipolar, using radio recombination lines (RRL). The H172α RRLs from these H II regions: G351.6-1.15 and G351.6-1.25, are mapped using GMRT, India. We also detect carbon RRLs C172α towards both these regions. The hydrogen RRLs display the effects of pressure and dynamical broadening in the line profiles, with the dynamical broadening (15 km/s) playing a major role in the observed profile of G351.6-1.15. We investigate the kinematics of molecular gas species towards this H II region from the MALT90 …
We present a multiwavelength investigation of the HII region G25.8700+0.1350, located in the inner part of the Galaxy. In radio continuum emission, the region is seen as a bright arc-shaped structure. An analysis of the HI line suggests that G25.8700+0.1350 lies at a distance of 6.5 kpc. The ionized gas is bordered by a photodissociation region which is encircled by a molecular structure where four molecular clumps are detected. At infrared wavelengths, the region is also very conspicuous. Given the high level of visual absorption in the region, the exciting stars should be searched for in the…
This paper investigates the gravitational trapping of HII regions predicted by steady-state analysis using radiation hydrodynamical simulations. We present idealised spherically symmetric radiation hydrodynamical simulations of the early evolution of HII regions including the gravity of the central source. As with analytic steady state solutions of spherically symmetric ionised Bondi accretion flows, we find gravitationally trapped HII regions with accretion through the ionisation front onto the source. We found that, for a constant ionising luminosity, fluctuations in the ionisation front are…
The intermediate- to high-mass star-forming region IRAS 20343+4129 is an excellent laboratory to study the influence of high- and intermediate-mass young stellar objects on nearby starless dense cores, and investigate for possible implications in the clustered star formation process. We present 3 mm observations of continuum and rotational transitions of several molecular species (C2H, c-C3H2, N2H+, NH2D) obtained with the Combined Array for Research in Millimetre-wave Astronomy, as well as 1.3 cm continuum and NH3 observations carried out with the Very Large Array, to reveal the properties of…
Using MUSE AO data, we probe the ISM in the local spiral galaxy NGC 7793 at a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 10 pc. We identify HII regions and compile a catalogue of supernova remnants (SNRs), planetary nebulae (PNe) and Wolf Rayet stars (WR). We compute electron densities and temperatures from the [SII]6716/6731 and [SIII]6312/9069 line ratios. We study the properties of the ionised gas through BPT diagrams combined with gas velocity dispersion. We spectroscopically confirm 2 previously detected WR stars and a SNR and report the discovery of 7 WR, 1 SNR, and 2 PNe. The diffuse ionized gas (DIG…
We present a detailed characterization of the population of compact radio-continuum sources in W51 A using subarcsecond VLA and ALMA observations. We analyzed their 2-cm continuum, the recombination lines (RL's) H77$α$ and H30$α$, and the lines of $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{0,3}-2_{0,2})$, $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{2,1}-2_{2,0})$, and $\rm SO(6_{5}-5_{4})$. We derive diameters for 10/20 sources in the range $D \sim 10^{-3}$ to $\sim 10^{-2}$ pc, thus placing them in the regime of hypercompact HII regions (HC HII's). Their continuum-derived electron densities are in the range $n_{\rm e} \sim 10^4$ to $10^5$ cm$^{-3…
Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) are observed to be turbulent, but theory shows that without a driving mechanism turbulence should quickly decay. The question arises by which mechanisms turbulence is driven or sustained. It has been shown that photoionising feedback from massive stars has an impact on the surrounding GMC and can for example create vast HII bubbles. We therefore address the question of whether turbulence is a consequence of this effect of feedback on the cloud. To investigate this, we analyse the velocity field of simulations of high mass star forming regions by studying velocity …
In order to investigate the origin of the interstellar turbulence, detailed observations in the CO J=1--0 and 3--2 lines have been carried out in an interacting region of a molecular cloud with an HII region. As a result, several 1,000 to 10,000 AU scale cloudlets with small velocity dispersion are detected, whose systemic velocities have a relatively large scatter of a few km/s. It is suggested that the cloud is composed of small-scale dense and cold structures and their overlapping effect makes it appear to be a turbulent entity as a whole. This picture strongly supports the two-phase model …
