We study \emph{multiplicity equivalence} testing of automata over partially commutative monoids (pc monoids) and show efficient algorithms in special cases, exploiting the structure of the underlying non-commutation graph of the monoid.
Specifically, if the clique cover number of the non-commutation graph (the minimum number of cliques covering the graph) of the pc monoid is a constant, we obtain a deterministic quasi-polynomial time algorithm. As a consequence, we also obtain the first deterministic quasi-polynomial time algorithms for multiplicity equivalence testing of $k$-tape automata and for equivalence testing of deterministic $k$-tape automata for constant $k$. Prior to this, a randomized polynomial-time algorithm for the above problems was shown by Worrell [ICALP 2013].
We also consider pc monoids for which the non-commutation graphs have cover consisting of at most $k$ cliques and star graphs for any constant $k$. We obtain randomized polynomial-time algorithm for multiplicity equivalence testing of automata over such monoids.
The Kleene theorem establishes a fundamental link between automata and expressions over the free monoid. Numerous generalisations of this result exist in the literature. Lifting this result to a weighted setting has been widely studied. Moreover, different monoids can be considered: for instance, two-way automata, and even tree-walking automata, can be described by expressions using the free inverse monoid. In the present work, we aim at combining both research directions and consider weighted extensions of automata and expressions over a class of monoids that we call pre-rational, generalisin…
We show that some results from the theory of group automata and monoid automata still hold for more general classes of monoids and models. Extending previous work for finite automata over commutative groups, we demonstrate a context-free language that can not be recognized by any rational monoid automaton over a finitely generated permutable monoid. We show that the class of languages recognized by rational monoid automata over finitely generated completely simple or completely 0-simple permutable monoids is a semi-linear full trio. Furthermore, we investigate valence pushdown automata, and pr…
In 2007 Kambites presented an algebraic interpretation of Chomsky-Schutzenberger theorem for context-free languages. We give an interpretation of the corresponding theorem for the class of displacement context-free languages which are equivalent to well-nested multiple context-free languages. We also obtain a characterization of k-displacement context-free languages in terms of monoid automata and show how such automata can be simulated on two stacks. We introduce the simultaneous two-stack automata and compare different variants of its definition. All the definitions considered are shown to …

Stochastic automata over monoids as input sets are studied. The well-definedness of these automata requires an extension postulate that replaces the inherent universal property of free monoids. As a generalization of Turakainen's result, it will be shown that the generalized automata over monoids have the same acceptance power as their stochastic counterparts. The key to homomorphisms is a commuting property between the monoid homomorphism of input states and the monoid homomorphism of transition matrices. Closure properties of the languages accepted by stochastic automata over monoids are inv…
The first step when forming the polynomial hierarchies of languages is to consider languages of the form KaL where K and L are over a finite alphabet A and from a given variety V of languages, a being a letter from A. All such KaL's generate the variety of languages BPol1(V). We estimate the numerical parameters of the language KaL in terms of their values for K and L. These parameters include the state complexity of the minimal complete DFA and the size of the syntactic monoids. We also estimate the cardinality of the image of A* in the Schuetzenberger product of the syntactic monoids of K an…
We consider the computational power of silent transitions in one-way automata with storage. Specifically, we ask which storage mechanisms admit a transformation of a given automaton into one that accepts the same language and reads at least one input symbol in each step. We study this question using the model of valence automata. Here, a finite automaton is equipped with a storage mechanism that is given by a monoid. This work presents generalizations of known results on silent transitions. For two classes of monoids, it provides characterizations of those monoids that allow the removal of λ-t…
In this paper we introduce a weighted LTL over product $ω$-valuation monoids that satisfy specific properties. We also introduce weighted generalized Büchi automata with $\varepsilon$-transitions, as well as weighted Büchi automata with $\varepsilon$-transitions over product $ω$-valuation monoids and prove that these two models are expressively equivalent and also equivalent to weighted Büchi automata already introduced in the literature. We prove that every formula of a syntactic fragment of our logic can be effectively translated to a weighted generalized Büchi automaton with $\varepsilon$-t…
During the last decades, classical models in language theory have been extended by control mechanisms defined by monoids. We study which monoids cause the extensions of context-free grammars, finite automata, or finite state transducers to exceed the capacity of the original model. Furthermore, we investigate when, in the extended automata model, the nondeterministic variant differs from the deterministic one in capacity. We show that all these conditions are in fact equivalent and present an algebraic characterization. In particular, the open question of whether every language generated by a …
We introduce (weighted) rational expressions to denote series over Cartesian products of monoids. To this end, we propose the operator $|$ to build multitape expressions such as $(a^+|x + b^+|y)^*$. We define expansions, which generalize the concept of derivative of a rational expression, but relieved from the need of a free monoid. We propose an algorithm based on expansions to build multitape automata from multitape expressions.
Eilenberg correspondence, based on the concept of syntactic monoids, relates varieties of regular languages with pseudovarieties of finite monoids. Various modifications of this correspondence related more general classes of regular languages with classes of more complex algebraic objects. Such generalized varieties also have natural counterparts formed by classes of finite automata equipped with a certain additional algebraic structure. In this survey, we overview several variants of such varieties of enriched automata.
Valence automata are a generalization of various models of automata with storage. Here, each edge carries, in addition to an input word, an element of a monoid. A computation is considered valid if multiplying the monoid elements on the visited edges yields the identity element. By choosing suitable monoids, a variety of automata models can be obtained as special valence automata. This work is concerned with the accepting power of valence automata. Specifically, we ask for which monoids valence automata can accept only context-free languages or only languages with semilinear Parikh image, resp…
This paper deals with the problem of recognizability of functions l: Sigma* --> M that map words to values in the support set M of a monoid (M,.,1). These functions are called M-languages. M-languages are studied from the aspect of their recognition by deterministic finite automata whose components take values on M (M-DFAs). The characterization of an M-language l is based on providing a right congruence on Sigma* that is defined through l and a factorization on the set of all M-languages, L(Sigma*,M) (in sort L). A factorization on L is a pair of functions (g,f) such that, for each l in L, g(…
Using automata-theoretic approach, Giambruno and Restivo have investigated on the intersection of two finitely generated submonoids of the free monoid over a finite alphabet. In particular, they have obtained Hanna Neumann property for a special class of submonoids generated by finite prefix sets. This work continues their work and provides a sufficient condition for Hanna Neumann property for the entire class of submonoids generated by finite prefix sets. In this connection, a general rank formula for the submonoids which are accepted by semi-flower automata is also obtained.
We consider the value 1 problem for probabilistic automata over finite words: it asks whether a given probabilistic automaton accepts words with probability arbitrarily close to 1. This problem is known to be undecidable. However, different algorithms have been proposed to partially solve it; it has been recently shown that the Markov Monoid algorithm, based on algebra, is the most correct algorithm so far. The first contribution of this paper is to give a characterisation of the Markov Monoid algorithm. The second contribution is to develop a profinite theory for probabilistic automata, calle…
Using combinatorial properties of incomplete sets in a free monoid we construct a series of n-state deterministic automata with zero whose shortest synchronizing word has length n^2/4+n/2-1.
This work studies which storage mechanisms in automata permit decidability of the emptiness problem. The question is formalized using valence automata, an abstract model of automata in which the storage mechanism is given by a monoid. For each of a variety of storage mechanisms, one can choose a (typically infinite) monoid $M$ such that valence automata over $M$ are equivalent to (one-way) automata with this type of storage. In fact, many important storage mechanisms can be realized by monoids defined by finite graphs, called graph monoids. Examples include pushdown stacks, partially blind cou…
For general input automata, there exist regular constraint languages such that asking if a given input automaton admits a synchronizing word in the constraint language is PSPACE-complete or NP-complete. Here, we investigate this problem for commutative automata over an arbitrary alphabet and automata with simple idempotents over a binary alphabet as input automata. The latter class contains, for example, the Černý family of automata. We find that for commutative input automata, the problem is always solvable in polynomial time, for every constraint language. For input automata with simple idem…
We study a model of one-way quantum automaton where only measurement operations are allowed (MOn-1qfa). We give an algebraic characterization of LMO, showing that the syntactic monoids of the languages in LMO are exactly the literal pseudovariety of J-trivial literally idempotent monoids, where J is the Green's relation determined by two-sided ideals. We also prove that LMO coincides with the literal variety of literally idempotent piecewise testable regular languages. This allows us to prove the existence of a polynomial time algorithm for deciding whether a regular language belongs to LMO.
For predual categories C and D we establish isomorphisms between opfibrations representing local varieties of languages in C, local pseudovarieties of D-monoids, and finitely generated profinite D-monoids. The global sections of these opfibrations are shown to correspond to varieties of languages in C, pseudovarieties of D-monoids, and profinite equational theories of D-monoids, respectively. As an application, we obtain a new proof of Eilenberg's variety theorem along with several related results, covering varieties of languages and their coalgebraic modifications, Straubing's C-varieties, fu…
We introduce a subclass of the commutative regular languages that is characterized by the property that the state set of the minimal deterministic automaton can be written as a certain Cartesian product. This class behaves much better with respect to the state complexity of the shuffle, for which we find the bound~$2nm$ if the input languages have state complexities $n$ and $m$, and the upward and downward closure and interior operations, for which we find the bound~$n$. In general, only the bounds $(2nm)^{|Σ|}$ and $n^{|Σ|}$ are known for these operations in the commutative case. We prove dif…
In this paper, we give a Nivat-like characterization for weighted alternating automata over commutative semirings (WAFA). To this purpose we prove that weighted alternating can be characterized as the concatenation of weighted finite tree automata (WFTA) and a specific class of tree homomorphism. We show that the class of series recognized by weighted alternating automata is closed under inverses of homomorphisms, but not under homomorphisms. We give a logical characterization of weighted alternating automata, which uses weighted MSO logic for trees. Finally we investigate the strong connectio…
For a group $G$ and a finite set $A$, denote by $\text{CA}(G;A)$ the monoid of all cellular automata over $A^G$ and by $\text{ICA}(G;A)$ its group of units. We study the minimal cardinality of a generating set, known as the rank, of $\text{ICA}(G;A)$. In the first part, when $G$ is a finite group, we give upper bounds for the rank in terms of the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups of $G$. The case when $G$ is a finite cyclic group has been studied before, so here we focus on the cases when $G$ is a finite dihedral group or a finite Dedekind group. In the second part, we find a basic lowe…
In this paper, we for the first time obtain characterization of four fundamental notions of detectability for general labeled weighted automata over monoids (denoted by $\mathcal{A}^{\mathfrak{M}}$ for short), where the four notions are strong (periodic) detectability (SD and SPD) and weak (periodic) detectability (WD and WPD). Firstly, we formulate the notions of concurrent composition, observer, and detector for $\mathcal{A}^{\mathfrak{M}}$. Secondly, we use the concurrent composition to give an equivalent condition for SD, use the detector to give an equivalent condition for SPD, and use th…
Indexed monoidal algebras are introduced as an equivalent structure for self-dual compact closed categories, and a coherence theorem is proved for the category of such algebras. Turing automata and Turing graph machines are defined by generalizing the classical Turing machine concept, so that the collection of such machines becomes an indexed monoidal algebra. On the analogy of the von Neumann data-flow computer architecture, Turing graph machines are proposed as potentially reversible low-level universal computational devices, and a truly reversible molecular size hardware model is presented …
In this work we define formal grammars in terms of free monoidal categories, along with a functor from the category of formal grammars to the category of automata. Generalising from the Booleans to arbitrary semirings, we extend our construction to weighted formal grammars and weighted automata. This allows us to link the categorical viewpoint on natural language to the standard machine learning notion of probabilistic language model.
We investigate commutative images of languages recognised by register automata and grammars. Semi-linear and rational sets can be naturally extended to this setting by allowing for orbit-finite unions instead of only finite ones. We prove that commutative images of languages of one-register automata are not always semi-linear, but they are always rational. We also lift the latter result to grammars: commutative images of one-register context-free languages are rational, and in consequence commutatively equivalent to register automata. We conjecture analogous results for automata and grammars w…
We use the notion of a partial action of a monoid to introduce a generalization of automata, which we call "a preautomaton". We study properties of preautomata and of languages recognized by preautomata.
Motivated by the Babai conjecture and the Cerny conjecture, we study the reset thresholds of automata with the transition monoid equal to the full monoid of transformations of the state set. For automata with $n$ states in this class, we prove that the reset thresholds are upper-bounded by $2n^2-6n+5$ and can attain the value $\tfrac{n(n-1)}{2}$. In addition, we study diameters of the pair digraphs of permutation automata and construct $n$-state permutation automata with diameter $\tfrac{n^2}{4} + o(n^2)$.
In this document, we propose a description, via a Haskell implementation, of a generalization of the notion of regular expression allowing us to group the definitions and the methods of (tree or word) automata constructions over one generic structure, based on enriched category theory tools. We first recall several methods of conversion from expressions to automata, enlightening the similarities between the words and trees cases. We then produce an original study of the power of enriched category theory applied 1) to automata and expressions implementation, and 2) to the study of associated al…
This is a tutorial on finite automata. We present the standard material on determinization and minimization, as well as an account of the equivalence of finite automata and monadic second-order logic. We conclude with an introduction to the syntactic monoid, and as an application give a proof of the equivalence of first-order definability and aperiodicity.
We define compact automata and show that every language has a unique minimal compact automaton. We also define recognition of languages by compact left semitopological monoids and construct the analogue of the syntactic monoid in this context. For rational languages this reduces to the usual theory of finite automata and finite monoids.
