A learning approach for optimal feedback gains for nonlinear continuous time control systems is proposed and analysed. The goal is to establish a rigorous framework for computing approximating optimal feedback gains using neural networks. The approach rests on two main ingredients. First, an optimal control formulation involving an ensemble of trajectories with 'control' variables given by the feedback gain functions. Second, an approximation to the feedback functions via realizations of neural networks. Based on universal approximation properties we prove the existence and convergence of optimal stabilizing neural network feedback controllers.
It is shown that an oblique projection based feedback control is able to stabilize the state of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, evolving in rectangular domains, to a given time-dependent trajectory. The number of actuators is finite and consists of a finite number of indicator functions supported in small subdomains. Simulations are presented, in the one-dimensional case, showing the stabilizing performance of the feedback control.
It is shown that an explicit oblique projection nonlinear feedback controller is able to stabilize semilinear parabolic equations, with time-dependent dynamics and with a polynomial nonlinearity. The actuators are typically modeled by a finite number of indicator functions of small subdomains. No constraint is imposed on the sign of the polynomial nonlinearity. The norm of the initial condition can be arbitrarily large, and the total volume covered by the actuators can be arbitrarily small. The number of actuators depend on the operator norm of the oblique projection, on the polynomial degree …
Sufficient conditions are established for sampled-data feedback global asymptotic stabilization for nonlinear autonomous systems. One of our main results is an extension of the well known Artstein-Sontag theorem on feedback stabilization concerning affine in the control systems. A second aim of the present work is to provide sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback asymptotic stabilization for two interconnected nonlinear systems. Lie algebraic sufficient conditions are derived for the case of affine in the control interconnected systems without drift terms.
This article presents a state feedback control design strategy for the stabilization of a vehicle along a reference collision avoidance maneuver. The stabilization of the vehicle is achieved through a combination of steering, acceleration and braking. A Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) model is obtained from the linearization of a non-linear model along the reference trajectory. A robust state feedback control law is computed for the LPV model. Finally, simulation results illustrate the stabilization of the vehicle along the reference trajectory.
For a general time-varying system, we prove that existence of an "Output Robust Control Lyapunov Function" implies existence of continuous time-varying feedback stabilizer, which guarantees output asymptotic stability with respect to the resulting closed-loop system. The main results of the present work constitute generalizations of a well-known result towards feedback stabilization due to J. M. Coron and L. Rosier concerning stabilization of autonomous systems by means of time-varying periodic feedback.

Numerical methods that preserve geometric invariants of the system, such as energy, momentum or the symplectic form, are called geometric integrators. Variational integrators are an important class of geometric integrators. The general idea for those variational integrators is to discretize Hamilton's principle rather than the equations of motion in a way that preserves some of the invariants of the original system. In this paper we construct variational integrators with fixed time step for time-dependent Lagrangian systems modelling an important class of autonomous dissipative systems. These …
Road traffic crashes have been the leading cause of death among young people. Most of these accidents occur when the driver becomes distracted and a loss-of-control situation occurs. Steer-by-Wire systems were recently proposed as an alternative to mitigate such accidents. This technology enables the decoupling of the front wheel steering angles from the driver hand wheel angle and, consequently, the measurement of road/tire friction limits and the development of novel control systems capable of ensuring vehicle stabilization and safety. However, vehicle safety boundaries are highly dependent …

Many recent works on stabilization of nonlinear systems target the case of locally stabilizing an unstable steady state solutions against small perturbation. In this work we explicitly address the goal of driving a system into a nonattractive steady state starting from a well developed state for which the linearization based local approaches will not work. Considering extended linearizations or state-dependent coefficient representations of nonlinear systems, we develop sufficient conditions for stability of solution trajectories. We find that if the coefficient matrix is uniformly stable in a…
We consider a classical problem of control of an inverted pendulum by means of a horizontal motion of its pivot point. We suppose that the control law can be non-autonomous and non-periodic w.r.t. the position of the pendulum. It is shown that global stabilization of the vertical upward position of the pendulum cannot be obtained for any Lipschitz control law, provided some natural assumptions. Moreover, we show that there always exists a solution separated from the vertical position and along which the pendulum never becomes horizontal. Hence, we also prove that global stabilization cannot be…
An optimal control for a dynamical system optimizes a certain objective function. Here we consider the construction of an optimal control for a stochastic dynamical system with a random structure, Poisson perturbations and random jumps, which makes the system stable in probability. Sufficient conditions of the stability in probability are obtained, using the second Lyapunov method, in which the construction of the corresponding functions plays an important role. Here we provide a solution to the problem of optimal stabilization in a general case. For a linear system with a quadratic quality fu…
There exist many ways to stabilize an infinite-dimensional linear autonomous control systems when it is possible. Anyway, finding an exponentially stabilizing feedback control that is as simple as possible may be a challenge. The Riccati theory provides a nice feedback control but may be computationally demanding when considering a discretization scheme. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) offers a popular way to reduce large-dimensional systems. In the present paper, we establish that, under appropriate spectral assumptions, an exponentially stabilizing feedback Riccati control designed fro…
For general nonlinear autonomous systems, a Lyapunov characterization for the possibility of semi-global asymptotic stabilizability by means of a time-varying sampled-data feedback is established. We exploit this result in order to derive a Lie algebraic sufficient condition for sampled-data feedback semi-global stabilizability of affine in the control nonlinear systems with non-zero drift terms. The corresponding proposition constitutes an extension of the "Artstein-Sontag" theorem on feedback stabilization.
This paper deals with data-driven stability analysis and feedback stabillization of linear input-output systems in autoregressive (AR) form. We assume that noisy input-output data on a finite time-interval have been obtained from some unknown AR system. Data-based tests are then developed to analyse whether the unknown system is stable, or to verify whether a stabilizing dynamic feedback controller exists. If so, stabilizing controllers are computed using the data. In order to do this, we employ the behavioral approach to systems and control, meaning a departure from existing methods in data d…
In this paper, a multi-lane multi-population microscopic model, which presents stop and go waves, is proposed to simulate traffic on a ring-road. Vehicles are divided between human-driven and autonomous vehicles (AV). Control strategies are designed with the ultimate goal of using a small number of AVs (less than 5\% penetration rate) to represent Lagrangian control actuators that can smooth the multilane traffic flow and dissipate the stop-and-go waves. This in turn may reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The lane-changing mechanism is based on three components that we treat as parameters …
