A planar Ising model of self-organized criticality

We consider the planar Ising model in a finite square box and we replace the temperature parameter with a function depending on the magnetization. This creates a feedback from the spin configuration onto the parameter, which drives the system towards the critical point. Using the finite-size scaling results of arXiv:0811.4507, we show that, when the size of the box grows to infinity, the temperature concentrates around the critical temperature of the planar Ising model on the square lattice.

Organized versus self-organized criticality in the abelian sandpile model

We define stabilizability of an infinite volume height configuration and of a probability measure on height configurations. We show that for high enough densities, a probability measure cannot be stabilized. We also show that in some sense the thermodynamic limit of the uniform measures on the recurrent configurations of the abelian sandpile model (ASM) is a maximal element of the set of stabilizable measures. Phase transition and critical behavior in a model of organized criticality

We study a model of ``organized'' criticality, where a single avalanche propagates through an \textit{a priori} static (i.e., organized) sandpile configuration. The latter is chosen according to an i.i.d. distribution from a Borel probability measure $ρ$ on $[0,1]$. The avalanche dynamics is driven by a standard toppling rule, however, we simplify the geometry by placing the problem on a directed, rooted tree. Erdos-Renyi random graphs + forest fires = self-organized criticality

We modify the usual Erdos-Renyi random graph evolution by letting connected clusters 'burn down' (i.e. fall apart to disconnected single sites) due to a Poisson flow of lightnings. In a range of the intensity of rate of lightnings the system sticks to a permanent critical state.

A Curie-Weiss Model of Self-Organized Criticality : The Gaussian Case

We try to design a simple model exhibiting self-organized criticality, which is amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. To this end, we modify the generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model by implementing an automatic control of the inverse temperature. With the help of exact computations, we show that, in the case of a centered Gaussian measure with positive variance $σ^{2}$, the sum $S_n$ of the random variables has fluctuations of order $n^{3/4}$ and that $S_n/n^{3/4}$ converges to the distribution $C \exp(-x^{4}/(4σ^4))\,dx$ where $C$ is a suitable positive constant.

Self-organized criticality via stochastic partial differential equations

Models of self-organized criticality, which can be described as singular diffusions with or without (multiplicative) Wiener forcing term (as e.g. the Bak/Tang/Wiesenfeld- and Zhang-models), are analyzed. Existence and uniqueness of nonnegative strong solutions are proved. Previously numerically predicted transition to the critical state in 1-D is confirmed by a rigorous proof that this indeed happens in finite time with high probability.

Stochastic Porous Media Equation and Self-Organized Criticality

The existence and uniqueness of nonnegative strong solutions for stochastic porous media equations with noncoercive monotone diffusivity function and Wiener forcing term is proven. The finite time extinction of solutions with high probability is also proven in 1-D. A note on continuity of magnetization at criticality for the ferromagnetic Ising model on amenable quasi-transitive graphs with exponential growth

The purpose of this modest note is to point out that the proof of the recent result of Huchcroft concerning continuity of phase transition in Bernoulli percolation is applicable to the setting of the Ising model with free boundary condition. This observation, together with a recent result of Aizenman, Duminil-Copin, and Sidoravicius implies that the Ising model on amenable quasi-transitive graph with exponential growth undergoes a second order phase transition.

For the two dimensional Ising model, we construct the adequate surface tension near criticality. A simple rank-based Markov chain with self-organized criticality

We introduce a self-reinforced point processes on the unit interval that appears to exhibit self-organized criticality, somewhat reminiscent of the well-known Bak-Sneppen model. Stochastic partial differential equations arising in self-organized criticality

We study scaling limits of the weakly driven Zhang and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) model for self-organized criticality. We show that the weakly driven Zhang model converges to a stochastic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular-degenerate diffusion. In addition, the deterministic BTW model is shown to converge to a singular-degenerate PDE.
