The coherence of collective modes, such as phonons, and their modulation of the electronic states are long sought in complex systems, which is a cross-cutting issue in photovoltaics and quantum electronics. In photovoltaic cells and lasers based on metal halide perovskites, the presence of polaronic coupling, i.e., photocarriers dressed by the macroscopic motion of charged lattice, assisted by terahertz (THz) longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, has been intensely studied yet still debated. This may be key for explaining the remarkable properties of the perovskite materials, e.g., defect tolerance, long charge lifetimes and diffusion length. Here we use the intense single-cycle THz pulse with the peak electric field up to $E_{THz}=$1000\,kV/cm to drive coherent band-edge oscillations at room temperature in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We reveal the oscillatory behavior dominantly to a specific quantized lattice vibration mode at $ω_{\mathrm{LO}}\sim$4 THz, being both dipole and momentum forbidden. THz-driven coherent dynamics exhibits distinguishing features: the room temperature coherent oscillations at $ω_{\mathrm{LO}}$ longer than 1 ps in both single crystals and thin films; the {\em mode-selective} modulation of different band edge states assisted by electron-phonon ($e$-$ph$) interaction; {\em dynamic mode splitting} controlled by temperature due to entropy and anharmonicity of organic cations. Our results demonstrate intense THz-driven coherent band-edge modulation as a powerful probe of electron-lattice coupling phenomena and provide compelling implications for polaron correlations in perovskites.
We elucidate the nature of the electron-phonon interaction in the archetypal hybrid perovskite CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ using ab initio many-body calculations and an exactly solvable model. We demonstrate that electrons and holes near the band edges primarily interact with three distinct groups of longitudinal-optical vibrations, in order of importance: the stretching of the Pb-I bond, the bending of the Pb-I-Pb bonds, and the libration of the organic cations. These polar phonons induce ultrafast intraband carrier relaxation over timescales of 6-30 fs and yield polaron effective masses 28% heavier …
Excitation localization involving dynamic nanoscale distortions is a central aspect of photocatalysis, quantum materials and molecular optoelectronics. Experimental characterization of such distortions requires techniques sensitive to the formation of point-defect-like local structural rearrangements in real time. Here, we visualize excitation-induced strain fields in a prototypical member of the lead halide perovskites via femtosecond resolution diffuse x-ray scattering measurements. This enables momentum-resolved phonon spectroscopy of the locally-distorted structure and reveals radially-exp…
We investigate the effect of local electron-phonon coupling on nonlinear optical conductivity in an interacting ferroelectric system. Using real-time simulations, we show an enhancement in nonlinear conductivity under linearly-polarized light due to generation of the phonon-assisted ballistic-current in addition to the injection-current generated by electron-hole pairs. The optically excited phonon modes generate an asymmetric carrier distribution that causes a strong directional ballistic-current. The ballistic-current enhances the photocurrent several times at above band-gap excitation frequ…
Hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors feature complex lattice dynamics due to the ionic character of the crystal and the softness arising from non-covalent bonds between molecular moieties and the inorganic network. Here we establish that such dynamic structural complexity in a prototypical two-dimensional lead iodide perovskite gives rise to the coexistence of diverse excitonic resonances, each with a distinct degree of polaronic character. By means of high-resolution resonant impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy, we identify vibrational wavepacket dynamics that evolve along different co…
Chalcogenide perovskites have received considerable interest in photovoltaic research community owing to their stability (thermal and aqueous), non-toxicity and lead free composition. However, to date a theoretical study mainly focusing on the excitonic and polaronic properties are not explored rigorously, due to its huge computational demand. Herein, we capture the excitonic and polaronic effects in a series of chalcogenide perovskites ABS$_3$ where A=Ba, Ca, Sr, and B=Hf, Sn by employing state-of-the art hybrid density functional theory and many body perturbative approaches viz. GW and BSE. …
The formation of polarons due to the interaction between charge carriers and the crystal lattice has been proposed to have wide-ranging effects on charge carrier dynamics in lead--halide perovskites (LHPs). The hypothesis underlying many of those proposals is that charge carriers are "protected" from scattering by their incorporation into polarons. We test that hypothesis by deriving expressions for the rates of scattering of polarons by polar-optical and acoustic phonons, and ionised impurities, which we compute for electrons in the LHPs MAPbI$_{3}$ , MAPbBr$_{3}$ and CsPbI$_{3}$. We then use…
The development of next generation perovskite-based optoelectronic devices relies critically on the understanding of the interaction between charge carriers and the polar lattice in out-of-equilibrium conditions. While it has become increasingly evident for CsPbBr3 perovskites that the Pb-Br framework flexibility plays a key role in their light-activated functionality, the corresponding local structural rearrangement has not yet been unambiguously identified. In this work, we demonstrate that the photoinduced lattice changes in the system are due to a specific polaronic distortion, associated …
The dynamics of electrons, spins and phonons induced by optical femtosecond pulses has been simulated for the polaronic crystal $\rm{Pr_{1/2}Ca_{1/2}MnO_3}$. The model used for the simulation has been derived from first-principles calculations. The simulations reproduce the experimentally observed melting of charge/orbital order with increasing fluence. The loss of charge order in the high-fluence regime induces a transition to a ferromagnetic metal. At low fluence, the dynamics is deterministic and coherent phonons are created by the repopulation of electronic orbitals, which are strongly cou…
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on undoped La2CuO4, indicating polaronic coupling between bosons and charge carriers. Using a shell model, we calculate the electron-phonon coupling and find that it is strong enough to give polarons. We develop an efficient method for calculating ARPES spectra in undoped systems. Using the calculated couplings, we find the width of the phonon side band in good agreement with experiment. We analyze reasons for the observed dependence of the width on the binding energy.
We examine generation dynamics of coherent phonons (CPs) in both of polar and non-polar semiconductors -- such as GaAs and Si -- based on a polaronic-quasiparticle (PQ) model. In the model concerned, the PQ operator is composed of two kinds of operators. One is a quasiboson operator -- defined as a linear combination of a set of pairs of electron operators -- and the other is a longitudinal optical (LO) phonon operator. The problem of transient and non-linear Fano resonance (FR) is tackled in particular; the vestige of this quantum interference effect was observed exclusively in lightly $n$-do…
While polarons --- charges bound to a lattice deformation induced by electron-phonon coupling --- are primary photoexcitations at room temperature in bulk metal-halide hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIP), excitons --- Coulomb-bound el\-ectron-hole pairs --- are the stable quasi-particles in their two-dimensional (2D) analogues. Here we address the fundamental question: are polaronic effects consequential for excitons in 2D-HIOPs? Based on our recent work, we argue that polaronic effects are manifested intrinsically in the exciton spectral structure, which is comprised of multiple non-d…
Electrons commonly couple through Fröhlich interactions with longitudinal optical phonons to form polarons. However, trions possess a finite angular momentum and should therefore couple instead to rotational optical phonons. This creates a polaronic trion whose binding energy is determined by the crystallographic orientation of the lattice. Here, we demonstrate theoretically within the Fröhlich approach and experimentally by photoluminescence emission that the bare trion binding energy (20 meV) is significantly enhanced by the phonons at the interface between the two-dimensional semiconductor …
The optical conductivity of charge carriers coupled to quantum phonons is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model. For one electron, variational diagonalisation yields exact results in the thermodynamic limit, whereas at finite carrier density analytical approximations based on previous work on single-particle spectral functions are obtained. Particular emphasis is put on deviations from weak-coupling, small-polaron or one-electron theories occurring at intermediate coupling and/or finite carrier density. The analytical results are in surprisingly good agreement…
In this work we performed a detailed investigation about ordering in \bcn perovskite. The sintering temperature and time were changed to obtain samples with different ordering. The order parameters were probed by Raman spectroscopy based on a partial disordered model. To use the partial disordered model correctly we performed {\it ab initio} calculations in \bcn to assign the optical phonons. The results showed that sintering temperature improves order while sintering time is not so efficient to promote order.
First-principles electronic structure calculations have been performed for the double perovskite Bi$_2$CoMnO$_6$ in its non-centrosymmetric polar state using generalized gradient approximation plus Hubbard U approach. We find that while Co is in a high spin state, Mn is in an intermediate spin state. The calculated dynamical charge tensors are anisotropic reflecting a low-symmetry structure of the compound. Magnetic structure dependent phonon frequencies indicate the presence of spin-phonon coupling. Using Berry phase method, we obtain a spontaneous electronic polarization of 5.88 $μC/cm^2$ wh…
We report first principles density functional perturbation theory calculations and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density of states, dispersion relations and electromechanical response of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. The phonon density-of-states of the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 is found to be fundamentally distinct from that of ferroelectric PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 with a large 70-90 meV phonon band-gap. The phonon dispersion and electromechanical response of PbTiO3 reveal giant anisotropies. The interplay of covalent bonding and ferroelectricity, strongly modulates the elec…
The ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach, an established method for the study of excitons in materials, is typically solved in a limit where only static screening from electrons is captured. Here, we generalize this framework to also include dynamical screening from phonons at lowest order in the electron-phonon interaction. We apply this generalized BSE approach to a series of inorganic lead halide perovskites, CsPbX3, with X = Cl, Br, and I. We find that inclusion of screening from phonons significantly reduces the computed exciton binding energies of these systems. By deriving a…
We investigate the electron-phonon coupling in CH3NH3PbX3 lead halide perovskites through the observation of Landau levels and high-order excitons at weak magnetic fields, where the cyclotron energy is significantly smaller than the longitudinal optical phonon energy. The reduced masses of the carriers and the exciton binding energies obtained from these data are clearly influenced by polaron formation. We analyze the field-dependent polaronic and excitonic properties, and show that they can be quantitatively reproduced by the Frohlich large polaron model.
Hybrid organolead perovskites (HOP) have started to establish themselves in the field of photovoltaics, mainly due to their great optoelectronic properties and steadily improving solar cell efficiency. Study of the lattice dynamics is key in understanding the electron-phonon interactions at play, responsible for such properties. Here, we investigate, via neutron and Raman spectroscopies, the optical phonon spectrum of four different HOP single crystals: MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$, and $α$-FAPbI$_3$. Low temperature spectra reveal weakly dispersive optical phonons, at energies as low as …
We have investigated the temperature-dependent Raman-active phonons and the magnetic properties of Gd(Co1/2Mn1/2)O3 perovskite ceramics in the temperature range from 40 K to 300 K. The samples crystallized in an orthorhombic distorted simple perovskite, whose symmetry belongs to the Pnma space group. The data reveals spin-phonon coupling near the ferromagnetic transition occurring at around 120 K. The correlation of the Raman and magnetization data suggests that the structural order influences the magnitude of the spin-phonon coupling.
We performed Raman spectroscopy measurements under temperature changes from 10 K up to 850 K to probe the phonon-spin coupling in Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The spin-phonon coupling was observed as a softening of the stretching mode, indicating this phonon stabilizes the magnetic interaction. The result indicates the rare earth ionic radius in Re$_2$NiMnO$_6$ double perovskites is not the unique parameter influencing the spin-coupling magnitude.
Perovskite oxides exhibit a rich variety of structural phases hosting different physical phenomena that generate multiple technological applications. We find that topological phonons, i.e., nodal rings, nodal lines, and Weyl points, are ubiquitous in oxide perovskites in terms of structures (tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral), compounds (BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrTiO3), and external conditions (photoexcitation, strain, and temperature). In particular, in the tetragonal phase of these compounds, all types of topological phonons can simultaneously emerge when stabilized by photoexcitation, …
By applying Wannier-based extended Kugel-Khomskii model, we carry out first-principles calculations and electronic structure analysis to understand the spin-phonon coupling effect in transition-metal perovskites. We demonstrate the successful application of our approach to SrMnO$_3$ and BiFeO$_3$. We show that both the electron orbitals under crystal field splitting and the electronic configuration should be taken into account in order to understand the large variances of spin-phonon coupling effects among various phonon modes as well as in different materials.
We investigate phonon transport in perovskite strontium titanate (SrTiO3) which is stable above its phase transition temperature (~105 K) by using first-principles molecular dynamics and anharmonic lattice dynamics. Unlike conventional ground-state-based perturbation methods that give imaginary phonon frequencies, the current calculation reproduces stable phonon dispersion relations observed in experiments. We find the contribution of optical phonons to overall lattice thermal conductivity is larger than 60%, markedly different from the usual picture with dominant contribution from acoustic ph…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials are able to strongly confine light hybridized with collective excitations of atoms, enabling electric-field enhancements and novel spectroscopic applications. Recently, freestanding monolayers of oxide perovskites have been synthesized, which possess highly infrared-active phonon modes and a complex interplay of competing interactions. In this study, we evaluate central figures of merit for phonon polaritons in the tetragonal phases of the 2D perovskites SrTiO$_3$, KTaO$_3$, and LiNbO$_3$, using density functional theory calculations. Specifically, we compute the…
We study the effect of circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation on optical polarons in monolayer \b{eta}-borophene. We focus on the off-resonant regime of large driving frequencies, which allows to set up an effectively time-independent Hamiltonian describing the radiation field in up to second perturbational order. The contributions of optical surface phonons are incorporated according to Lee-Low-Pines theory, via a sequence of appropriate unitary transformations. A central object in our investigation is the electronic band gap, which is shown to be widely controllable via the variation…
Epitaxial III-V semiconductor heterostructures are key components in modern microelectronics, electro-optics and optoelectronics. With superior semiconducting properties, halide perovskite materials are rising as promising candidates for coherent heterostructure devices. In this report, spinodal decomposition is proposed and experimentally implemented to produce epitaxial double heterostructures in halide perovskite system. Pristine epitaxial mixed halide perovskites rods and films were synthesized via Van der Waals epitaxy by chemical vapor deposition method. At room temperature, photon was a…
We report a systematic investigation of orthorhombic perovskite-type RCrO3 powder samples by Raman scattering for nine different rare earth R3+ cations (R = Y, La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu). The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for structural investigation of the whole series of RCrO3 orthochromites and phonon ab-initio calculations. The assignment of the chromite spectra and comparison with Raman data on other orthorhombic perovskites allows correlating the phonon modes with the structural distortions in the RCrO3 series. In par…
Solar cells based on metal-halide perovskite absorber layers have resulted in outstanding photovoltaic devices with long non-radiative lifetimes as a crucial feature enabling high efficiencies. Long non-radiative lifetimes occur if the transfer of the energy of the electron-hole pair into vibrational energy is slow, due to, e.g., a low density of defects, weak electron phonon coupling or the release of a large number of phonons needed for a single transition. Here, we discuss the implications of the known material properties of metal-halide perovskites (such as permittivities, phonon energies …
We report an investigation of perovskite-type LaNiO3 thin films by Raman scattering in both various scattering configurations and as a function of temperature. The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for phonon calculations and for the use of Raman scattering for structural investigations of LaNiO3, namely the effect of strain in thin films or heterostructures. The temperature-dependent Raman spectra from 80 to 900 K are characterized by the softening of the rotational A1g mode, which suggest a decreasing rhombohedral distortion towar…
In this work, we investigate the local structural distortion of the double perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ by means of infrared transmission spectroscopy. At 300 K, three bands are observed at $\sim$ 255.1 cm$^{-1}$, $\sim$ 343.4 cm$^{-1}$, and $\sim$ 561.5 cm$^{-1}$, which are related to the motion between the cation Ba$^{2+}$ and the anion YMO$_6^{-2}$, the Y-O stretching motion and the stretching vibration of the MoO$_6$ octahedron, respectively. These modes continue to harden upon cooling owing to the shrink of the lattice constant. When the temperature decreases to $T \leq$ 130 K around which t…
In this paper we investigated the influence of the rare-earth ionic radii on the spin-phonon coupling in RE2NiMnO6 double perovskites by Raman spectroscopy. Spin-phonon in dense Nd2NiMnO6 and Gd2NiMnO6 ceramics were investigated by Raman spectroscopy at low temperatures. The magnitude of the coupling observed in comparison with other isostructural compounds shows that it is not influenced by the rare-earth ionic radius, as well as the deviation of the position of the stretching phonon in the ferromagnetic phase with relation to the anharmonic contributions follows a power law.
We have used a shell model to study the phonon dynamics of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 (R= Tb, Dy, Ho). The calculated phonon dynamical properties, crystal structure, Raman frequencies and specific heat are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data. Besides, the phonon density of states, elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves along high symmetry directions (sigma, delta and lambda) have also been computed. A zone-center imaginary Au mode is revealed in these phonon dispersion curves, which indicates the occurrence of metastability of the perovskite phase. The…
Inelastic neutron scattering study of the perovskite relaxor ferroelectric PZN:8%PT elucidates the origin of the previously reported unusual kink on the low frequency transverse phonon dispersion curve (known as "waterfall" effect). We show that its position depends on the choice of the Brillouin zone and that the relation of its position to the size of the polar nanoregions is highly improbable. The observation is explained in the framework of a simple model of coupled damped harmonic oscillators representing the acoustic and optic phonon branches.
Recently we proposed that defect tolerance in the hybrid perovskites is due to their characteristic low-frequency lattice phonon modes that decrease the non-adiabatic coupling and weaken the overlap between the free carrier and defect states [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)]. Kim and Walsh disagree with the interpretation and argue that there are flaws in our employed methodology. Herein we address their concerns and show that their conclusions are not valid due to misunderstandings of nonadiabatic transition.
Halide perovskites exhibit slow rates of non-radiative electron-hole recombination upon illumination. Chu et al. [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)] use the results of first-principles simulations to argue that this arises from the nature of the crystal vibrations and leads to a breakdown of Shockley-Read-Hall theory. We highlight flaws in their methodology and analysis of carrier capture by point defects in crystalline semiconductors.
Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic insulating double-perovskite compound La2NiMnO6, which has been reported to exhibit interesting magnetic field sensitive dielectric anomaly as a function of temperature. Our study reveals existence of very soft infra-red active phonons that couple strongly with spins at the Ni and Mn sites through modification of the super-exchange interaction. We suggest that these modes are the origin for observed dielectric anomaly in La2NiMnO6.
Cubic perovskite oxides are emerging high-mobility transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), but Ge-based TCOs had not been known until the discovery of metastable cubic SrGeO$_3$. $0.5 \times 0.4 \times 0.2$-mm$^3$ large single crystals of the cubic SrGeO$_3$ perovskite were successfully synthesized employing the high-pressure flux method. The phonon spectrum is determined from the IR optical reflectance and Raman-scattering analysis to evaluate the electron transport governed by optical phonon scattering. A calculated room-temperature mobility on the order of $3.9 \times 10^2$ cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{…
Exploring 2D/Quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite A$_{n+1}$Hf$_n$S$_{3n+1}$ (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba; n = 1-3) for Optoelectronics using Many-Body Perturbation Theory
We discover hidden Rashba fine structure in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and demonstrate its quantum control by vibrational coherence through symmetry-selective vibronic (electron-phonon) coupling. Above a critical threshold of a single-cycle terahertz pump field, a Raman phonon mode distinctly modulates the middle excitonic states with {\em persistent} coherence for more than ten times longer than the ones on two sides that predominately couple to infrared phonons. These vibronic quantum beats, together with first-principles modeling of phonon periodically modulated Rashba parameters, identify a {\em …
We find that in BaTiO$_3$ the phonon angular momentum is dominantly pointing in directions perpendicular to the electrical polarization. Therefore, external electric field in ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ does not control only the direction of electrical polarization, but also the direction of phonon angular momentum. This finding opens up the possibility for electric-field control of physical phenomena that rely on phonon angular momentum. We construct an intuitive model, based on our first-principles calculations, that captures the origin of the relationship between phonon angular momentum and ele…
Weak antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction in the ferromagnetic (FM) partially ordered La2CoMnO6 (LCMO) was detected by Raman spectroscopy by monitoring spin-phonon coupling. Because of the sensibility to probe short-range disorder and lattice modifications, the Raman spectroscopy showed to be an useful tool to indicate less remarkable magnetic transitions in LCMO compound. Apart from the expected spin-phonon coupling due to the long-range FM superexchange (Tc~230 K), phonons parameters pointed out an additional spin-phonon coupling related to the short-range AF interaction at Tc~135 K, which was…
The present {\em ab initio} study shows that in BaBiO$_3$, Bi$^{3+}$ sites can trap two holes from the valence band to form Bi$^{5+}$ cations. The trapping is accompanied by large local lattice distortions, therefore the composite particle consisting of the electronic-hole and the local lattice phonon field forms a polaron. Our study clearly shows that even $sp$ elements can trap carriers at lattice sites, if local lattice relaxations are sufficiently large to screen the localised hole. The derived model describes all relevant experimental results, and settles the issue of why hole doped BaBiO…
The phonon spectra of calcium, strontium, barium, radium, cadmium, zinc, magnesium, germanium, tin, and lead titanates with the perovskite structure are calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. By analyzing the unstable modes in the phonon spectra, the possible lattice distortions are determined and the energies of the corresponding phases are calculated. From analyzing the phonon spectra, force constants, and eigenvectors of TO phonons, a conclusion is drawn on the origin of the ferroelectricity in considered crystals. It is shown that the main factors determinin…
Lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_{lat}$) of MgSiO$_3$ postperovskite (MgPPv) under the Earth's lower mantle high pressure-temperature conditions is studied using the phonon quasiparticle approach by combing \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics simulations. Phonon lifetimes are extracted from the phonon quasiparticle calculations, and the phonon group velocities are computed from the anharmonic phonon dispersions, which in principle capture full anharmonicity. It is found that throughout the lowermost mantle, including the D" region, $κ_{lat}$ of MgPPv is ~25% larger than …
Spin-phonon interactions are central to many interesting phenomena, ranging from superconductivity to magnetoelectric effects. Yet, they are believed to have a negligible influence on the structural behavior of most materials. For example, magnetic perovskite oxides often undergo structural transitions accompanied by magnetic signatures whose minuteness suggests that the underlying spin-phonon couplings are largely irrelevant. Here we present an exception to this rule, showing that novel effects can occur as a consequence. Our first-principles calculations reveal that spin-phonon interactions …
Lead-halide perovskites are promising materials for opto-electronic applications. Recent reports indicated that their mechanical and electronic properties are strongly affected by the lattice vibrations. Herein we report far-infrared spectroscopy measurements of CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$Pb(I/Br/Cl)$_{3}$ thin films and single crystals at room temperature and a detailed quantitative analysis of the spectra. We find strong broadening and anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations for all three halide perovskites, which indicates dynamic disorder of the lead-halide cage at room temperature. We determine the …
