Motivated by the geospin matrix $W$ as a new variable in Riemannian geometry. Then, we use four real dynamical variables $\left\{ a,α,v,W \right\}$ to show the dynamical essence of Cartan structural equation, we obtain the geometrodynamics on Riemannian manifolds that can be expressed below \begin{align}
& Θ/d{{t}^{2}}=a-v\wedge W,\nonumber
& dΘ/d{{t}^{3}}=v\wedge α-a\wedge W,\nonumber
& Ω/d{{t}^{2}}=α-W\wedge W, \nonumber
& dΩ/d{{t}^{3}}=W\wedge α-α\wedge W\nonumber \end{align} that is valid more generally for any connection in a principal bundle. We can see that the first equation explains the geodesic equation very well, the second formula means the first Bianchi identity, while the last equation reveals the dynamical nature of the second Bianchi identity. It implies that Cartan structural equations on Riemannian manifolds can be rewritten in a real geometrodynamical form based on the geospin matrix.
We prove two injectivity theorems for the geodesic ray transform on two-dimensional, complete, simply connected Riemannian manifolds with non-positive Gaussian curvature, also known as Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. The first theorem is concerned with bounded non-positive curvature and the second with decaying non-positive curvature.
Given a five dimensional space endowed with a Cartan distribution, the abnormal geodesics form another five dimensional space with a cone structure. Then it is shown, if the cone structure is regarded as a control system, then, the space of abnormal geodesics of the cone structure is naturally identified with the original space. In this paper, we provide an exposition on the duality by abnormal geodesics in a wider framework, namely, in terms of quotients of control systems and sub-Riemannian pseudo-product structures. Also we consider the controllability of cone structures and describe the co…
We prove an inequality for submanifolds of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, which relates the geometry of a submanifold to the measure of the geodesics in the ambient space which it intersects. For hypersurfaces, this gives an extension of Banchoff and Pohl's isoperimetric inequality to spaces of non-positive curvature. We also prove a modified version of Croke's isoperimetric inequality for hypersurfaces immersed in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and a sharp, quantitative version of an isoperimetric inequality of Yau in spaces of negative curvature. We discuss the relationship between these results, and…
We extend the Polydisk Theorem for symmetric bounded domains to Cartan-Hartogs domains, and apply it to prove that a Cartan-Hartogs domain inherits totally geodesic submanifolds from the bounded symmetric domain which is based on, and to give a characterization of Cartan-Hartogs's geodesics with linear support.
In this paper, we first provide an updated survey of the geometry of complex Cartan spaces. New characterizations for some particular classes of complex Cartan spaces are pointed out, e.g. Landsberg-Cartan, strongly Berwald-Cartan and others. We introduce the Cartan-Randers spaces which offer examples of Berwald-Cartan and strongly Berwald-Cartan spaces. Then, we investigate the complex geodesic curves of a complex Cartan space, using the image by Legendre transformation ($\mathcal{L}-$ duality) of complex geodesic curves of a complex Finsler space. Assuming the weakly Kähler condition for a c…
The Cartan group is the free nilpotent Lie group of rank 2 and step 3. We consider the left-invariant sub-Riemannian problem on the Cartan group defined by an inner product in the first layer of its Lie algebra. This problem gives a nilpotent approximation of an arbitrary sub-Riemannian problem with the growth vector $(2,3,5)$. In previous works we described a group of symmetries of the sub-Riemannian problem on the Cartan group, and the corresponding Maxwell time -- the first time when symmetric geodesics intersect one another. It is known that geodesics are not globally optimal after the Max…
This paper is a continuation of the work by the same authors on the Cartan group equipped with the sub-Finsler $\ell_\infty$ norm. We start by giving a detailed presentation of the structure of bang-bang extremal trajectories. Then we prove upper bounds on the number of switchings on bang-bang minimizers. We prove that any normal extremal is either bang-bang, or singular, or mixed. Consequently, we study mixed extremals. In particular, we prove that every two points can be connected by a piecewise smooth minimizer, and we give a uniform bound on the number of such pieces.
We use the Cartan representations of $SO(3)$ and $SU(3)$, and an irreducible 14-dimensional representation of $Sp(3)$ to construct certain totally geodesic submanifolds in "skew" position in the complex quadrics, the complex 2-Grassmannians and the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians.
A powerful mathematical method for the investigation of the properties of dynamical systems is represented by the Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) theory. In this approach the time evolution of a dynamical system is described in geometric terms, treating the solution curves of a dynamical system by geometrical methods inspired by the geodesics theory of Finsler spaces. In order to geometrize the dynamical evolution one introduces a non-linear and a Berwald type connection, respectively, and thus the properties of any dynamical system are described in terms of five geometrical invariants, with the se…
We answer to the question whether a system of the 3rd order ODEs describes geodesics of a conformal structure. We construct a functor from a category of conformal geometries to a category of Cartan geometries associated to the 3rd order ODEs systems. Explicit formulas which define the family of all equations on conformal geodesics are given in the last section of the article.
We revisit certain path-lifting and path-continuation properties of abstract maps as described in the work of F. Browder and R. Rheindboldt in 1950-1960s, and apply their elegant theory to exponential maps. We obtain thereby a number of novel results of existence and multiplicity of geodesics joining any two points of a connected affine manifold, as well as ${\it causal}$ geodesics connecting any two causally related points on a Lorentzian manifold. These results include a generalization of the well-known Hadamard-Cartan theorem of Riemannian geometry to the affine manifold context, as well as…
We study the geodesic X-ray transform on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, and prove solenoidal injectivity of this transform acting on functions and tensor fields of any order. The functions are assumed to be exponentially decaying if the sectional curvature is bounded, and polynomially decaying if the sectional curvature decays at infinity. This work extends the results of Lehtonen (2016) to dimensions $n \geq 3$ and to the case of tensor fields of any order.
In this paper, we prove a version of the classical Cartan-Hadamard theorem for negatively curved manifolds, of dimension $n\neq 5$, with non-empty totally geodesic boundary. More precisely, if $M_1^n,M_2^n$ are any two such manifolds, we show that (1) $\partial ^\infty \tilde M_1^n$ is homeomorphic to $\partial ^\infty \tilde M_2^n$, and (2) $\tilde M_1^n$ is homeomorphic to $\tilde M_2^n$. As a sample application, we show that simple, thick, negatively curved P-manifolds of dimension $\geq 6$ are topologically rigid. We include some straightforward consequences of topological rigidity (diagra…
There are many equivalent definitions of Riemannian geodesics. They are naturally generalised to sub-Riemannian manifold, but become non-equivalent. We give a review of different definitions of geodesics of a sub-Riemannian manifold and interrelation between them. We recall three variational definitions of geodesics as (locally) shortest curves (Euler-Lagrange, Pontyagin and Hamilton) and three definitions of geodesics as straightest curves (d'Alembert , Levi-Civita-Schouten and Cartan-Tanaka ), used in nonholonomic mechanics and discuss their interrelations. We consider a big class of sub-Rie…
We consider the problem $\mathbf{P_{curve}}$ of minimizing $\int \limits_0^L \sqrt{ξ^2 + κ^2(s)} \, {\rm d}s$ for a curve $\mathbf{x}$ on $\mathbb R$ with fixed boundary points and directions. Here the total length $L\geq 0$ is free, $s$ denotes the arclength parameter, $κ$ denotes the absolute curvature of $\mathbf{x}$, and $ξ>0$ is constant. We lift problem $\mathbf{P_{curve}}$ on $\mathbb R^3$ to a sub-Riemannian problem $\mathbf{P_{mec}}$ on $\operatorname{SE(3)}\nolimits/(\{\mathbf{0}\}\times \operatorname{SO(2)}\nolimits)$. Here, for admissible boundary conditions, the spatial projection…
We construct point invariants of ordinary differential equations that generalise the Cartan invariants of equations of order two and three. The vanishing of the invariants is equivalent to the existence of a totally geodesic paraconformal structure which consist of a paraconformal structure, an adapted $GL(2,\R)$-connection and a two-parameter family of totally geodesic hypersurfaces on the solution space. The structures coincide with the projective structures in dimension 2 and with the Einstein-Weyl structures of Lorentzian signature in dimension 3. We show that the totally geodesic paraconf…
It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at …
The Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) theory represents a powerful mathematical method for the investigation of the properties of dynamical systems. The KCC theory introduces a geometric description of the time evolution of a dynamical system, with the solution curves of the dynamical system described by methods inspired by the theory of geodesics in a Finsler spaces. The evolution of a dynamical system is geometrized by introducing a non-linear connection, which allows the construction of the KCC covariant derivative, and of the deviation curvature tensor. In the KCC theory the properties of any dyn…
In this article the framework created by Cartan to produce local differential invariants for submanifolds of homogeneous spaces is applied to classify all totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds and all homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler manifold of full flags in $\mathbb{C}^3$.
The famous theorems of Cartan, related to the axiom of $r$-planes, and Leung-Nomizu about the axiom of $r$-spheres were extended to Kähler geometry by several authors. In this paper we replace the strong notions of totally geodesic submanifolds ($r$-planes) and extrinsic spheres ($r$-spheres) by a wider class of special isometric immersions such that theorems of type "axioms of $r$-special submanifolds" could hold. We verify also that there are plenty of special submanifolds in real and complex space forms and, in the codimension one case, in Einstein manifolds.
These notes on Riemannian geometry use the bases bundle and frame bundle, as in Geometry of Manifolds, to express the geometric structures. It has more problems and omits the background material. It starts with the definition of Riemannian and semi-Riemannian structures on manifolds. Affine connections, geodesics, torsion and curvature, the exponential map, and the Riemannian connection follow quickly. The Taylor series for of the metric in normal coordinates is an unusual feature. The last third covers, first and second variation of energy, completeness, cut points, the Hadamard-Cartan theore…
E. Cartan's method of moving frames is applied to 3-dimensional manifolds $M$ which are CR-embedded in 5-dimensional real hyperquadrics $Q$ in order to classify $M$ up to CR symmetries of $Q$ given by the action of one of the Lie groups $SU(3,1)$ or $SU(2,2)$. In the latter case, the CR structure of $M$ derives from a shear-free null geodesic congruence on Minkowski spacetime, and the relationship to relativity is discussed. In both cases, we compute which homogeneous CR 3-folds appear in $Q$.
We study the long-time behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the Porous Medium Equation posed on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds having very large negative curvature, more precisely when the sectional or Ricci curvatures diverge at infinity more than quadratically in terms of the geodesic distance to the pole. We find an unexpected separate-variable behaviour that reminds one of Dirichlet problems on bounded Euclidean domains. As a crucial step, we prove existence of solutions to a related sublinear elliptic problem, a result of independent interest. Uniqueness of solutions vanishing at infinity is …
