We study general 2D fermionic topological orders enriched by the mirror symmetry with $\mathcal{M}^2=1$. It is known that certain mirror symmetry enriched fermionic topological orders (mirror SETs) are anomalous, in the sense that they cannot be realized in strict two dimensions but have to live on the surface of 3D topological crystalline superconductors. Mirror anomaly, or equivalently 3D topological crystalline superconductor, has a $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification. In this work, we derive an explicit expression, namely an \emph{anomaly indicator}, for the $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ mirror anomaly for general fermionic mirror SETs. This derivation is based on the recently developed folding approach, originally proposed for bosonic topological orders. We generalize it to fermion systems. Through this approach, we establish a direct bulk-boundary correspondence between surface fermionic topological orders and 3D bulk topological crystalline superconductors. In addition, during the derivation, we obtain some general properties of fermionic topological orders as well as a few constraints on properties of fermionic mirror SETs.
We study gapped systems with anomalous time-reversal symmetry and global gravitational anomaly in three and four spacetime dimensions. These systems describe topological order on the boundary of bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) Phases. Our description of these phases is via the recent cobordism proposal for their classification. In particular, the behavior of these systems is determined by the geometry of Stiefel-Whitney classes. We discuss electric and magnetic operators defined by these classes, and new types of Wilson lines and surfaces that sit on their boundary. The lines desc…
We demonstrate that 3+1-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with fermionic charges, fermionic monopoles, and fermionic dyons arises at the edge of a 4+1-dimensional gapped state with short-range entanglement. This state cannot be adiabatically connected to a product state, even in the absence of any symmetry. This provides independent evidence for the obstruction found by arXiv:1306.3238 to a 3+1-dimensional short-distance completion of all-fermion electrodynamics. The non-triviality of the bulk is demonstrated by a novel fermion number anomaly.
Quasiparticle excitations in $3+1$ dimensions can be either bosons or fermions. In this work, we introduce the notion of fermionic loop excitations in $3+1$ dimensional topological phases. Specifically, we construct a new many-body lattice invariant of gapped Hamiltonians, the loop self-statistics, that distinguishes two bosonic topological orders that both superficially resemble $3+1$ d ${\mathbb{Z}}_2$ gauge theory coupled to fermionic charged matter. The first has fermionic charges and bosonic ${\mathbb{Z}}_2$ gauge flux loops (FcBl) and is just the ordinary fermionic toric code. The second…
The chiral anomaly is a phenomenon characteristic of Weyl fermions, which has condensed matter realizations in Weyl semimetals. Efforts to observe smoking gun signatures of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals have mostly focused on a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in electronic transport. Unfortunately, disentangling the chiral anomaly contribution in transport or optical measurements has proven non-trivial. Recent works have proposed an alternative approach of probing pseudoscalar phonon dynamics for signatures of the chiral anomaly in non-mirror-symmetric crystals. Here, we show t…
In this short paper, we argue that the chiral central charge $c_-$ of a (2+1)d topological ordered state is sometimes strongly constrained by 't Hooft anomaly of anti-unitary global symmetry. For example, if a (2+1)d fermionic TQFT has a time reversal anomaly with $T^2=(-1)^F$ labeled as $ν\in\mathbb{Z}_{16}$, the TQFT must have $c_-=1/4$ mod $1/2$ for odd $ν$, while $c_-=0$ mod $1/2$ for even $ν$. This generalizes the fact that the bosonic TQFT with $T$ anomaly in a particular class must carry $c_-=4$ mod $8$ to fermionic cases. We also study such a constraint for fermionic TQFT with $U(1)\ti…
Some time-reversal symmetric topological orders are anomalous in that they cannot be realized in strictly two-dimensions without breaking time reversal symmetry; instead, they can only be realized on the surface of certain three-dimensional systems. We propose two quantities, which we call {\it anomaly indicators}, that can detect if a time-reversal symmetric topological order is anomalous in this sense. Both anomaly indicators are expressed in terms of the quantum dimensions, topological spins, and time-reversal properties of the anyons in the given topological order. The first indicator, $η_…
We derive a series of quantitative bulk-boundary correspondences for 3D bosonic and fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases under the assumption that the surface is gapped, symmetric and topologically ordered, i.e., a symmetry-enriched topological (SET) state. We consider those SPT phases that are protected by the mirror symmetry and continuous symmetries that form a group of $U(1)$, $SU(2)$ or $SO(3)$. In particular, the fermionic cases correspond to a crystalline version of 3D topological insulators and topological superconductors in the famous ten-fold-way classification, with…
We prove an explicit formula conjectured recently by Wang and Levin for the anomaly of time-reversal symmetry in 2+1 dimensional fermionic topological quantum field theories. The crucial step is to determine the crosscap state in terms of the modular S matrix and $\mathsf{T}^2$ eigenvalues, generalizing the recent analysis by Barkeshli et al. in the bosonic case.
We develop a theory of anomalies of fermionic topological phases of matter in (2+1)D with a general fermionic symmetry group $G_f$. In general, $G_f$ can be a non-trivial central extension of the bosonic symmetry group $G_b$ by fermion parity $(-1)^F$. We encounter four layers of obstructions to gauging the $G_f$ symmetry, which we dub the anomaly cascade: (i) An $\mathcal{H}^1(G_b,\mathbb{Z}_{\bf T})$ obstruction to extending the symmetry permutations on the anyons to the fermion parity gauged theory, (ii) An $\mathcal{H}^2(G_b, \ker r)$ obstruction to extending the $G_b$ group structure of t…
Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are well understood in the context of free fermions and in the context of interacting but essentially bosonic models. Recently it has been realized that intrinsically fermionic SPTs exist which only appear in interacting models. Here we show that the 3+1 dimensional realizations of these phases have surface states characterized by a new 't Hooft anomaly, captured by a $H^3(G, Z_2)$ class. This is encoded in the anomalous action of symmetry on the surface states with topological order, which must necessarily permute the anyons. We discuss in detail an…
We show how 1+1-dimensional fermionic symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs, i.e. nontrivial short-range entangled gapped phases of quantum matter whose boundary exhibits 't Hooft anomaly and whose bulk cannot be deformed into a trivial tensor product state under finite-depth local unitary transformations only in the presence of global symmetries), indeed can be unwound to a trivial state by enlarging the Hilbert space via adding extra degrees of freedom and suitably extending the global symmetries. The extended projective global symmetry on the boundary can become supersymmetric in a sp…
Tensor network states, and in particular projected entangled pair states, play an important role in the description of strongly correlated quantum lattice systems. They do not only serve as variational states in numerical simulation methods, but also provide a framework for classifying phases of quantum matter and capture notions of topological order in a stringent and rigorous language. The rapid development in this field for spin models and bosonic systems has not yet been mirrored by an analogous development for fermionic models. In this work, we introduce a framework of tensor networks hav…
We present microscopic Hamiltonians that gap the Dirac fermions on the surface of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) protected by reflection symmetry and create symmetry-preserving states with Abelian topological orders. For TCIs with $n = 2$ copies of surface Dirac fermions, we find a fermionic $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topological order with charge-spin self duality and with a novel symmetry action on the anyons, whereby reflections with respect to two parallel planes act differently. We also analyze TCIs with $n = 1$ and $4$ copies of Dirac fermions, which taken together covers every nontrivial…
By developing a generalized cobordism theory, we explore the higher global symmetries and higher anomalies of quantum field theories and interacting fermionic/bosonic systems in condensed matter. Our essential math input is a generalization of Thom-Madsen-Tillmann spectra, Adams spectral sequence, and Freed-Hopkins's theorem, to incorporate higher-groups and higher classifying spaces. We provide many examples of bordism groups with a generic $H$-structure manifold with a higher-group $\mathbb{G}$, and their bordism invariants --- e.g. perturbative anomalies of chiral fermions [originated from …
