Extensive numerical simulations in the past decades proved that the critical exponents of the jamming of frictionless spherical particles remain unchanged in two and three dimensions. This implies that the upper critical dimension is $d_u=2$ or lower. In this work, we study the jamming transition below the upper critical dimension. We investigate a quasi-one-dimensional system: disks confined in a narrow channel. We show that the system is isostatic at the jamming transition point as in the case of standard jamming transition of the bulk systems in two and three dimensions. Nevertheless, the scaling of the excess contact number shows the linear scaling. Furthermore, the gap distribution remains finite even at the jamming transition point. These results are qualitatively different from those of the bulk systems in two and three dimensions.
Like other critical phenomena, the jamming transition accompanies the divergence of the relaxation time $τ$. A recent numerical study of frictionless spherical particles proves that $τ$ is inversely proportional to the lowest non-zero eigenvalue $λ_1$ of the dynamical matrix. In this note, we derive the scaling of $λ_1$ below the jamming transition point $φ_J$ by solving the linearized dynamical equation. The resultant critical exponent agrees with a previous theoretical result for sheared suspension obtained by applying the virtual work theorem to a simple shear, highlighting the universality…
We numerically study the relaxation dynamics and associated criticality of non-Brownian frictionless spheres below jamming in spatial dimensions $d=2$, $3$, $4$, and $8$, and in the mean-field Mari-Kurchan model. We discover non-trivial finite-size and volume fraction dependences of the relaxation time associated to the relaxation of unjammed packings. In particular, the relaxation time is shown to diverge logarithmically with system size at any density below jamming, and no critical exponent can characterise its behaviour approaching jamming. In mean-field, the relaxation time is instead well…
Critical properties of frictionless spherical particles below jamming are studied using extensive numerical simulations, paying particular attention to the non-affine part of the displacements during the athermal quasi-static compression. It is shown that the squared norm of the non-affine displacement exhibits a power-law divergence toward the jamming transition point. A possible connection between this critical exponent and that of the shear viscosity is discussed. The participation ratio of the displacements vanishes in the thermodynamic limit at the transition point, meaning that the non-a…
We show that non-Brownian suspensions of repulsive spheres below jamming display a slow relaxational dynamics with a characteristic time scale that diverges at jamming. This slow time scale is fully encoded in the structure of the unjammed packing and can be readily measured via the vibrational density of states. We show that the corresponding dynamic critical exponent is the same for randomly generated and sheared packings. Our results show that a wide variety of physical situations, from suspension rheology to algorithmic studies of the jamming transition are controlled by a unique diverging…
We consider the rheology of soft-core frictionless disks in two dimensions in the neighborhood of the athermal jamming transition. From numerical simulations of bidisperse, overdamped, particles, we argue that the divergence of the viscosity below jamming is characteristic of the hard-core limit, independent of the particular soft-core interaction. We develop a mapping from soft-core to hard-core particles that recovers all the critical behavior found in earlier scaling analyses. Using this mapping we derive a duality relation that gives the exponent of the non-linear Herschel-Bulkley rheology…
Amorphous packings of spheres have been intensely investigated in order to understand the mechanical and flow behaviour of dense granular matter, and to explore universal aspects of the transition from fluid to structurally arrested or jammed states. Considerable attention has recently been focussed on anisotropic packings of frictional grains generated by shear deformation leading to shear jamming, which occurs below the jamming density for isotropic packings of frictionless grains. With the aim of disentangling the role of shear deformation induced structures and friction in generating shear…
We numerically investigate stress relaxation in soft athermal disks to reveal critical slowing down when the system approaches the jamming point. The exponents describing the divergence of the relaxation time differ dramatically depending on whether the transition is approached from the jammed or unjammed phase. This contrasts sharply with conventional dynamic critical scaling scenarios, where a single exponent characterizes both sides. We explain this surprising difference in terms of the vibrational density of states (vDOS), which is a key ingredient of linear viscoelastic theory. The vDOS e…
The rheology near jamming of a suspension of soft colloidal spheres is studied using a custom microfluidic rheometer that provides stress versus strain rate over many decades. We find non-Newtonian behavior below the jamming concentration and yield stress behavior above it. The data may be collapsed onto two branches with critical scaling exponents that agree with expectations based on Hertzian contacts and viscous drag. These results support the conclusion that jamming is similar to a critical phase transition, but with interaction-dependent exponents.
We study experimentally the relaxation towards mechanical equilibrium of a granular pile which has just experienced an avalanche and discuss it in the more general context of the granular jamming transition. Two coexisting dynamics are observed in the surface layer: a short time exponential decay consisting in rapid and independent moves of grains and intermittent bursts consisting in spatially correlated moves lasting for longer time. The competition of both dynamics results in long-lived intermittent transients, the total duration of which can late more than a thousand of seconds. We measure…
Via simulations of flowing foam, we connect the high and intermediate density regimes of complex fluid flows into a consistent microscopic picture of deformation. While at and above the jamming transition, elastic correlations lead to strong spatial organization of the flow field, below jamming, the slowly diminishing elastic correlation length leads to slowly ceasing spatial organization, which is nevertheless still present down to densities far below jamming. We show that the long-range correlated flow field arises from the superposition of quadrupolar strain fields of shear zones with highl…
We perform numerical simulations of athermal repulsive frictionless disks and spheres in two and three spatial dimensions undergoing cyclic quasi-static simple shear to investigate particle-scale reversible motion. We identify three classes of steady-state dynamics as a function of packing fraction ϕand maximum strain amplitude per cycle γ_{\rm max}. Point-reversible states, where particles do not collide and exactly retrace their intra-cycle trajectories, occur at low ϕand γ_{\rm max}. Particles in loop-reversible states undergo numerous collisions and execute complex trajectories, but return…
We study the rheology of amorphous packings of soft, frictionless particles close to jamming. Implementing a quasistatic simulation method we generate a well defined ensemble of states that directly samples the system at its yield-stress. A continuous jamming transition from a freely-flowing state to a yield stress situation takes place at a well defined packing fraction, where the scaling laws characteristic of isostatic solids are observed. We propose that long-range correlations observed below the transition are dominated by this isostatic point, while those that are observed above the tran…
We determine the dimensional dependence of the percolative exponents of the jamming transition via numerical simulations in four and five spatial dimensions. These novel results complement literature ones, and establish jamming as a mixed first-order percolation transition, with critical exponents $β=0$, $γ= 2$, $α= 0$ and the finite size scaling exponent $ν^* = 2/d$ for values of the spatial dimension $d \geq 2$. We argue that the upper critical dimension is $d_u=2$ and the connectedness length exponent is $ν=1$.
We investigate criticality near the jamming transition in both quiescent systems and those under shear by considering the effect of mechanical training on the jamming transition and nonlinear rheology. We simulate frictionless soft particles undergoing athermal quasi-static shear using initial configurations trained with athermal quasi-static cyclic volume deformations. The jamming transition density of the initial configuration $φ_{\rm J0}$ is systematically altered by tuning the ``depth'' of mechanical training. We exert a steady shear on these configurations and observe either shear jamming…
Geometrical properties of two-dimensional mixtures near the jamming transition point are numerically investigated using harmonic particles under mechanical training. The configurations generated by the quasi-static compression and oscillatory shear deformations exhibit anomalous suppression of the density fluctuations, known as hyperuniformity, below and above the jamming transition. For the jammed system trained by compression above the transition point, the hyperuniformity exponent increases. For the system below the transition point under oscillatory shear, the hyperuniformity exponent also…
We present an analysis of finite-size effects in jammed packings of N soft, frictionless spheres at zero temperature. There is a 1/N correction to the discrete jump in the contact number at the transition so that jammed packings exist only above isostaticity. As a result, the canonical power-law scalings of the contact number and elastic moduli break down at low pressure. These quantities exhibit scaling collapse with a non-trivial scaling function, demonstrating that the jamming transition can be considered a phase transition. Scaling is achieved as a function of N in both 2 and 3 dimensions,…
A jammed packing of frictionless spheres at zero temperature is perfectly specified by the network of contact forces from which mechanical properties can be derived. However, we can alternatively consider a packing as a geometric structure, characterized by a Voronoi tessellation which encodes the local environment around each particle. We find that this local environment characterizes systems both above and below jamming and changes markedly at the transition. A variety of order parameters derived from this tessellation carry signatures of the jamming transition, complete with scaling exponen…
The reversible-irreversible (RI) transition of particle trajectories in athermal colloidal suspensions under cyclic shear deformation is an archetypal nonequilibrium phase transition which attracts much attention recently. In the low-density limit, the RI transition is predicted to belong to a universality class of the absorbing state transitions, whereas at the high densities well above the jamming transition density, $φ_{\rm J}$, the transition is discontinuous and is closely related to the yielding transition. The transition between the two limiting cases is largely unexplored. In this pape…
We numerically study a three dimensional system of athermal, overdamped, frictionless spheres, using a simplified model for a non-Brownian suspension. We compute the bulk viscosity under both uniaxial and isotropic compression as a means to address the question of whether stress-anisotropic and stress-isotropic jamming are in the same critical universality class. Carrying out a critical scaling analysis of the system pressure $p$, shear stress $σ$, and macroscopic friction $μ=σ/p$, as functions of particle packing fraction $ϕ$ and compression rate $\dotε$, we find good agreement for all critic…
We have explored isotropically jammed states of semi-2D granular materials through cyclic compression. In each compression cycle, systems of either identical ellipses or bi-disperse disks, transition between jammed and unjammed states. We determine the evolution of the average pressure, P, and structure through consecutive jammed states. We observe a transition point, ϕm, above which P persists over many cycles; below ϕm, P relaxes slowly. The relaxation time scale associated with P increases with packing fraction, while the relaxation time scale for collective particle motion remains constant…
We carry our numerical simulations of athermally sheared, bidisperse, frictionless disks in two dimensions. From an appropriately defined velocity correlation function, we determine that there are two diverging length scales, $ξ$ and $\ell$, as the jamming transition is approached. We analyze our results using a critical scaling ansatz for the correlation function, and argue that the more divergent length $\ell$ is a consequence of a dangerous irrelevant scaling variable, and that it is $ξ$ which is the correlation length that determines the divergence of the system viscosity as jamming is app…
We carry out numerical simulations of soft, U-shaped, frictionless particles in $d=2$ dimensions in order to explore the effects of complex particle shape on the jamming transition. We consider both cases of uniform compression-driven and shear-driven jamming as packing fraction $ϕ$ and compression or shear rate is varied. Upon slow compression, jamming is found to occur when the isostatic condition is satisfied. Under driven steady state shearing, jamming occurs at a higher packing fraction $ϕ_J$ than observed in compression. A growing relaxation time and translational correlation length is f…
We carry out constant volume simulations of steady-state, shear driven, rheology in a simple model of bidisperse, soft-core, frictionless disks in two dimensions, using a dissipation law that gives rise to Bagnoldian rheology. We carry out a detailed critical scaling analysis of our resulting data for pressure $p$ and shear stress $σ$, in order to determine the critical exponent $β$ that describes the algebraic divergence of the Bagnold transport coefficients, as the jamming transition is approached from below. We show that it is necessary, for the strain rates considered in this work, to cons…
While the glass transition at non-zero temperature seems to be hard to access for experimental, theoretical, or simulation studies, jamming at zero temperature has been explored in great detail. It is a widely discussed question whether this athermal jamming transition is related to the glass transition. Motivated by the exploration of the energy landscape that has been successfully used to describe athermal jamming, we introduce a new method to determine whether the configuration space of a soft sphere system can be explored within a reasonable timescale or not, i.e., whether the system is er…
We find that in simulations of quasi-statically sheared frictional disks, the shear jamming transition can be characterized by an abrupt jump in the number of force bearing contacts between particles. This mechanical coordination number increases discontinuously from $Z = 0$ to $Z \gtrsim d +1$ at a critical shear value $γ_c$, as opposed to a smooth increase in the number of geometric contacts. This is accompanied by a diverging timescale $τ^*$ that characterizes the time required by the system to attain force balance when subjected to a perturbation. As the global shear $γ$ approaches the cri…
Recent theoretical advances have led to the creation of a unified phase diagram for the thermal glass and athermal jamming transitions. This diagram makes clear that, while related, the mode-coupling---or dynamic---glass transition is distinct from the jamming transition, occurring at a finite temperature and significantly lower density than the jamming transition. Nonetheless, we demonstrate a pre-jamming transition in athermal frictionless spheres which occurs at the same density as the mode-coupling transition and is marked by percolating clusters of locally rigid particles. At this density…
We study relaxation and rheology of dense athermal suspensions of frictionless particles close below the jamming density. Our key quantity, the relaxation time---determined from the exponential decay of the energy after the shearing has suddenly been switched off---is argued to be a determining factor behind the algebraic divergence of various quantities as the jamming density is approached from below. We also define and measure the ``dissipation time'', which is obtained directly in shearing simulations and find that it behaves similarly to the relaxation time. Comparing shear viscosity with …
Self-organization, and transitions from reversible to irreversible behaviour, of interacting particle assemblies driven by externally imposed stresses or deformation is of interest in comprehending diverse phenomena in soft matter. They have been investigated in a wide range of systems, such as colloidal suspensions, glasses, and granular matter. In different density and driving regimes, such behaviour is related to yielding of amorphous solids, jamming, and memory formation, \emph{etc.} How these phenomena are related to each other has not, however, been much studied. In order to obtain a uni…
Various disordered dense systems such as foams, gels, emulsions and colloidal suspensions, exhibit a jamming transition from a liquid state (they flow) to a solid state below a yield stress. Their structure, thoroughly studied with powerful means of 3D characterization, exhibits some analogy with that of glasses which led to call them soft glassy materials. However, despite its importance for geophysical and industrial applications, their rheological behavior, and its microscopic origin, is still poorly known, in particular because of its nonlinear nature. Here we show from two original experi…
Flows of suspensions are often affected by wall slip, that is the fluid velocity $v_{f}$ in the vicinity of a boundary differs from the wall velocity $v_{w}$ due to the presence of a lubrication layer. While the slip velocity $v_s=\vert v_{f}-v_{w}\vert$ robustly scales linearly with the stress $σ$ at the wall in dilute suspensions, there is no consensus regarding denser suspensions that are sheared in the bulk, for which slip velocities have been reported to scale as a $v_s\proptoσ^p$ with exponents $p$ inconsistently ranging between 0 and 2. Here we focus on a suspension of soft thermorespon…
Though jamming transitions are long studied in condensed matter physics and granular systems, much less is known about active jamming (or unjamming), which commonly takes place in living materials. In this paper, we explore, by molecular dynamic simulations, the jamming-unjamming transition in a dense system of active semi-flexible filaments. In particular we characterise the distinct impact of polar versus nematic driving for different filament rigidity and at varying density. Our results show that high densities of dynamic active filaments can be achieved by only changing the nature of the a…
Typical quasistatic compression algorithms for generating jammed packings of athermal, purely repulsive particles begin with dilute configurations and then apply successive compressions with relaxation of the elastic energy allowed between each compression step. It is well-known that during isotropic compression athermal systems with purely repulsive interactions undergo a jamming transition at packing fraction $ϕ_J$ from an unjammed state with zero pressure to a jammed, rigid state with nonzero pressure. Using extensive computer simulations, we show that a novel second-order-like transition, …
We study experimentally the motion of an intruder dragged into an amorphous monolayer of horizontally vibrated grains at high packing fractions. This motion exhibits two transitions. The first transition separates a continuous motion regime at comparatively low packing fractions and large dragging force from an intermittent motion one at high packing fraction and low dragging force. Associated to these different motions, we observe a transition from a linear rheology to a stiffer response. We thereby call "fluidisation" this first transition. A second transition is observed within the intermit…
Soft particulate media include a wide range of systems involving athermal dissipative particles both in non-living and biological materials. Characterization of flows of particulate media is of great practical and theoretical importance. A fascinating feature of these systems is the existence of a critical rigidity transition in the dense regime dominated by highly intermittent fluctuations that severely affects the flow properties. Here, we unveil the underlying mechanisms of rare fluctuations in soft particulate flows. We find that rare fluctuations have different origins above and below the…
The jamming transition in granular materials is well-known for exhibiting hysteresis, wherein the level of shear stress required to trigger flow is larger than that below which flow stops. Although such behavior is typically modeled as a simple non-monotonic flow rule, the rheology of granular materials is also nonlocal due to cooperativity at the grain scale, leading for instance to increased strengthening of the flow threshold as system size is reduced. We investigate how these two effects - hysteresis and nonlocality - couple with each other by incorporating non-monotonicity of the flow rul…
At densities higher than the jamming transition for athermal, frictionless repulsive spheres we find two distinct length scales, both of which diverge as a power law as the transition is approached. The first, $ξ_{Z}$, is associated with the two-point correlation function for the number of contacts on two particles as a function of the particle separation. The second, $ξ_{f}$, is associated with contact-number fluctuations in subsystems of different sizes. On scales below $ξ_{f}$ the fluctuations are highly suppressed, similar to the phenomenon of hyperuniformity usually associated with densit…
When subject to applied strain, fiber networks exhibit nonlinear elastic stiffening. Recent theory and experiements have shown that this phenomenon is controlled by an underlying mechanical phase transition that is critical in nature. Growing simulation evidence points to non-mean-field behavior for this transition and a hyperscaling relation has been proposed to relate the corresponding critical exponents. Here, we report simulations on two distinct network structures in 3D. By performing finite-size scaling analysis, we test hyperscaling and identify various critical exponents. From the appa…
We consider zero temperature packings of soft spheres, that undergo a jamming to unjamming transition as a function of packing fraction. We compare differences in the structure, as measured from the contact statistics, of a finite subsystem of a large packing to a whole packing with periodic boundaries of an equivalent size and pressure. We find that the fluctuations of the ensemble of whole packings are smaller than those of the ensemble of subsystems. Convergence of these two quantities appears to occur at very large systems, which are usually not attainable in numerical simulations. Finding…
