Over the last decade, systems of individually-controlled neutral atoms, interacting with each other when excited to Rydberg states, have emerged as a promising platform for quantum simulation of many-body problems, in particular spin systems. Here, we review the techniques underlying quantum gas microscopes and arrays of optical tweezers used in these experiments, explain how the different types of interactions between Rydberg atoms allow a natural mapping onto various quantum spin models, and describe recent results that were obtained with this platform to study quantum many-body physics.
We study coherent excitation hopping in a spin chain realized using highly excited individually addressable Rydberg atoms. The dynamics are fully described in terms of an XY spin Hamiltonian with a long range resonant dipole-dipole coupling that scales as the inverse third power of the lattice spacing, $C_3/R^3$. The experimental data demonstrate the importance of next neighbor interactions which are manifest as revivals in the excitation dynamics. The results suggest that arrays of Rydberg atoms are ideally suited to large scale, high-fidelity quantum simulation of spin dynamics.
We study the implementation of a high fidelity controlled-phase gate in a Rydberg quantum computer. The protocol is based on a symmetric gate with respect to the two qubits as experimentally realized by Levine et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 170503 (2019)], but allows for arbitrary pulse shapes with time-dependent detuning. Optimizing the pulse shapes, we introduce laser pulses which shorten the time spent in the Rydberg state by 10% and reduce the leading contribution to the gate infidelity, i.e., the decay from the Rydberg state. Remarkably, this reduction can be achieved for smooth pulses in d…

Trapped Rydberg ions represent a flexible platform for quantum simulation and information processing which combines a high degree of control over electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. The possibility to individually excite ions to high-lying Rydberg levels provides a system where strong and long-range interactions between pairs of excited ions can be engineered and tuned via external laser fields. We show that the coupling between Rydberg pair interactions and collective motional modes gives rise to effective long-range multi-body interactions, consisting of two, three, and four-body …
Precise control and study of molecules is challenging due to the variety of internal degrees of freedom and local coordinates that are typically not controlled in an experiment. Employing quantum gas microscopy to position and resolve the atoms in Rydberg macrodimer states solves almost all of these challenges and enables unique access to the molecular frame. Here, we demonstrate the power of this approach and present first photoassociation studies for different molecular symmetries in which the molecular orientation relative to an applied magnetic field, the polarization of the excitation lig…
We discuss the computational complexity of finding the ground state of the two-dimensional array of quantum bits that interact via strong van der Waals interactions. Specifically, we focus on systems where the interaction strength between two spins depends only on their relative distance $x$ and decays as $1/x^6$ that have been realized with individually trapped homogeneously excited neutral atoms interacting via the so-called Rydberg blockade mechanism. We show that the solution to NP-complete problems can be encoded in ground state of such a many-body system by a proper geometrical arrangeme…
We demonstrate a platform for synthetic dimensions based on coupled Rydberg levels in ultracold atoms, and we implement the single-particle Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian. Rydberg levels are interpreted as synthetic lattice sites, with tunneling introduced through resonant millimeter-wave couplings. Tunneling amplitudes are controlled through the millimeter-wave amplitudes, and on-site potentials are controlled through detunings of the millimeter waves from resonance. Using alternating weak and strong tunneling with weak tunneling to edge lattice sites, we attain a configuration with s…
Long-range interactions between cold Rydberg atoms, which are used in many important applications, can be enhanced using Förster resonances between collective many-body states controlled by an external electric field. Here we report on the first experimental observation of highly-resolved radio-frequency-assisted Förster resonances in a few cold Rb Rydberg atoms. We also observed radio-frequency-induced Förster resonances which cannot be tuned by a dc electric field. They imply an efficient transition from van der Waals to resonant dipole-dipole interaction due to Floquet sidebands of Rydberg …

We study a novel regime of the Rydberg excitation blockade using highly Stark-shifted, yet long-living, states of Rb atoms subject to electric fields above the classical ionization limit. Such states allow tuning the dipole-dipole interaction strength while their ionization rate can be changed over two orders of magnitude by small variations of the electric field. We demonstrate laser excitation of the interacting Rydberg states followed by their detection using controlled ionization and magnified imaging with high spatial and temporal resolution. Our work reveals the hitherto unexplored possi…
Trapped neutral atoms have become a prominent platform for quantum science, where entanglement fidelity records have been set using highly-excited Rydberg states. However, controlled two-qubit entanglement generation has so far been limited to alkali species, leaving the exploitation of more complex electronic structures as an open frontier that could lead to improved fidelities and fundamentally different applications such as quantum-enhanced optical clocks. Here we demonstrate a novel approach utilizing the two-valence electron structure of individual alkaline-earth Rydberg atoms. We find fi…
We measure the angular dependence of the resonant dipole-dipole interaction between two individual Rydberg atoms with controlled relative positions. By applying a combination of static electric and magnetic fields on the atoms, we demonstrate the possibility to isolate a single interaction channel at a Förster resonance, that shows a well-defined angular dependence. We first identify spectroscopically the Förster resonance of choice and we then perform a direct measurement of the interaction strength between the two atoms as a function of the angle between the internuclear axis and the quantiz…
The properties and behaviour of a Ring Rydberg Composite are explicated. This system consists of a ring of ground state atoms centered on a Rydberg atom, whose electron elastically scatters off the ground state atoms. We transform the electronic Hamiltonian into a discrete tight-binding representation in which the on-site energies and long-range hopping between sites are controlled and mediated by the Rydberg electron. From this new representation, which to a large extent enables an analytic treatment, we derive scaling laws and analytic expressions for the wave functions and eigenspectrum. Th…
Arrays of optically trapped atoms excited to Rydberg states have recently emerged as a competitive physical platform for quantum simulation and computing, where high-fidelity state preparation and readout, quantum logic gates and controlled quantum dynamics of more than 100 qubits have all been demonstrated. These systems are now approaching the point where reliable quantum computations with hundreds of qubits and realistically thousands of multiqubit gates with low error rates should be within reach for the first time. In this article we give an overview of the Rydberg quantum toolbox, emphas…
We report on the direct measurement of the van der Waals interaction between two isolated, single Rydberg atoms separated by a controlled distance of a few micrometers. By working in a regime where the single-atom Rabi frequency of the laser used for excitation to the Rydberg state is comparable to the interaction energy, we observe a \emph{partial} Rydberg blockade, whereby the time-dependent populations of the various two-atom states exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. A quantitative comparison of the data with a simple model based on the optical Bloch equations allows us…
The three-body Förster resonances ${\rm 3}\times nP_{3/2} \to nS_{1/2} +(n+1)S_{1/2} +nP_{3/2}^{*} $ controlled by a dc electric field were realized earlier by the authors in an ensemble of several cold Rydberg Rb atoms. One of the drawbacks of such resonances for potential application in three-qubit quantum gates is the proximity of the two-body Förster resonance ${\rm 2}\times nP_{3/2} \to nS_{1/2} +(n+1)S_{1/2}, $ as well as the possibility of their implementation only for states with values of the principal quantum numbers $n\le 38$. In this paper we propose and analyze a three-body resona…
Charge dynamics in an ultra-cold setup involving a laser dressed atom and an ion is studied here. This transfer of charge is enabled through molecular Rydberg states that are accessed via a laser. The character of the charge exchange crucially depends on the coupling between the electronic dynamics and the vibrational motion of the atoms and ion. The molecular Rydberg states are characterized and a criterion for distinguishing coherent and incoherent regimes is formulated. Furthermore the concept is generalized to the many-body setup as the ion effectively propagates through a chain of atoms. …
We present a method to control collisions between ultracold neutral atoms in the electronic ground state and trapped ions. During the collision, the neutral atom is resonantly excited by a laser to a low-field-seeking Rydberg state, which is repelled by the ion. As the atom is reflected from the ion, it is de-excited back into its electronic ground level. The efficiency of shielding is analyzed as a function of laser frequency and power, initial atom-ion collision energy, and collision angle. The suitability of several Rydberg levels of Na and Rb for shielding is discussed. Useful applications…
We consider a system consisting of Rydberg dressed atoms interacting with BEC condensate of diatomic molecules. Using random phase approximation (RPA) we calculate the effective interactions between Rydberg atoms accounting for their Wan der Waals repulsion and exchange of virtual excitations of the condensate and demonstrate that total interaction can become attractive and BCS state of Rydberg dressed atoms can be formed. Using the example of 6Li atoms we demonstrate that the strength of the interactions can be controlled optically, and BCS regime is achievable at realistic experimental condi…
We study the quantum nonequilibrium dynamics of ultracold three-level atoms trapped in an optical lattice, which are excited to their Rydberg states via a two-photon excitation with nonnegligible spontaneous emission. Rich quantum phases including uniform phase, antiferromagnetic phase and oscillatory phase are identified. We map out the phase diagram and find these phases can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of intensity of the pump light to the control light, and that of two-photon detuning to the Rydberg interaction strength. When the two-photon detuning is blue-shifted and the latter r…
Experiments have demonstrated that atoms excited to specific Rydberg states within Bose-Einstein condensates cause significant excitation of phonons. If the Rydberg atom is brought into an electronic superposition state, this coupling to phonons leads to decoherence. We provide the theoretical basis for the treatment of the latter. To this end, we evaluate Rydberg-phonon coupling coefficients using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. From these coefficients, we calculate bath correlation functions, spectral densities and re-organisation energies. All these quantify the influe…
We study the long-range interaction of a single ion with a highly excited ultracold Rydberg atom and report on the direct observation of ion-induced Rydberg excitation blockade mediated over tens of micrometer distances. Our hybrid ion-atom system is directly produced from an ultracold atomic ensemble via near-threshold photo-ionization of a single Rydberg excitation, employing a two-photon scheme which is specifically suited for generating a very low-energy ion. The ion's motion is precisely controlled by small electric fields, which allows us to analyze the blockade mechanism for a range of …
Many-body correlations govern a variety of important quantum phenomena such as the emergence of superconductivity and magnetism. Understanding quantum many-body systems is thus one of the central goals of modern sciences. Here we demonstrate an experimental approach towards this goal by utilizing an ultracold Rydberg gas generated with a broadband picosecond laser pulse. We follow the ultrafast evolution of its electronic coherence by time-domain Ramsey interferometry with attosecond precision. The observed electronic coherence shows an ultrafast oscillation with a period of 1 femtosecond, who…
We present a robust protocol for implementing high-fidelity multiqubit controlled phase gates $(C^kZ)$ on neutral atom qubits coupled to highly excited Rydberg states. Our approach is based on extending adiabatic rapid passage to two-photon excitation via a short-lived intermediate excited state common to alkali-atom Rydberg experiments, accounting for the full impact of spontaneous decay and differential AC Stark shifts from the complete manifold of hyperfine excited states. We evaluate and optimize gate performance, concluding that for Cs and currently available laser frequencies and powers,…
Realizing quantum speedup for practically relevant, computationally hard problems is a central challenge in quantum information science. Using Rydberg atom arrays with up to 289 qubits in two spatial dimensions, we experimentally investigate quantum algorithms for solving the Maximum Independent Set problem. We use a hardware-efficient encoding associated with Rydberg blockade, realize closed-loop optimization to test several variational algorithms, and subsequently apply them to systematically explore a class of graphs with programmable connectivity. We find the problem hardness is controlled…
The devil's staircase is a fractal structure that characterizes the ground state of one-dimensional classical lattice gases with long-range repulsive convex interactions. Its plateaus mark regions of stability for specific filling fractions which are controlled by a chemical potential. Typically such staircase has an explicit particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the staircase at more than half-filling can be trivially extracted from the one at less than half filling by exchanging the roles of holes and particles. Here we introduce a quantum spin chain with competing short-range attractive and long-ra…
Dominating finite-range interactions in many-body systems can lead to intriguing self-ordered phases of matter. Well known examples are crystalline solids or Coulomb crystals in ion traps. In those systems, crystallization proceeds via a classical transition, driven by thermal fluctuations. In contrast, ensembles of ultracold atoms laser-excited to Rydberg states provide a well-controlled quantum system, in which a crystalline phase transition governed by quantum fluctuations can be explored. Here we report on the experimental preparation of the crystalline states in such a Rydberg many-body s…
Rotons can exist in ultracold atomic gases either with long-range interactions or with spin-orbitcoupled dispersions. We find that two different kinds of rotons coexist in a joint system combining long-range interactions and spin-orbit coupling. One roton originates from spin-orbit coupling and two others come from long-range interactions. Their softening can be controlled separately. The interesting new phenomenon which we find is that spin-orbit-coupled roton can push down the energy of one long-range-interaction roton. The spin-orbit coupling accelerates the softening of this roton. The pos…
Synthetic quantum materials offer an exciting opportunity to explore quantum many-body physics and novel states of matter under controlled conditions. In particular, they provide an avenue to exchange the short length scales and large energy scales of the solid state for an engineered system with better control over the system Hamiltonian, more accurate state preparation, and higher fidelity state readout. Here we propose a unique platform to study quantum phases of strongly interacting photons. We introduce ideas for controlling the dynamics of individual photons by manipulating the geometry …
