We combine Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Paschen $β$ (Pa$β$) imaging with ground-based, previously published H$α$ maps to estimate the attenuation affecting H$α$, A(H$α$), across the nearby, face-on galaxies NGC 5194 and NGC 6946. We estimate A(H$α$) in ~ 2,000 independent 2" ~75 pc diameter apertures in each galaxy, spanning out to a galactocentric radius of almost 10 kpc. In both galaxies, A(H$α$) drops with radius, with a bright, high attenuation inner region, though in detail the profiles differ between the two galaxies. Regions with the highest attenuation-corrected H$α$ luminosity show the highest attenuation, but the observed H$α$ luminosity of a region is not a good predictor of attenuation in our data. Consistent with much previous work, the IR-to-H$α$ color does a good job of predicting A(H$α$). We calculate the best-fit empirical coefficients for use combining H$α$ with 8, 12, 24, 70, or 100 $μ$m to correct for attenuation. These agree well with previous work but we also measure significant scatter around each of these linear relations. The local atomic plus molecular gas column density, N(H), also predicts A(H$α$) well. We show that a screen with magnitude ~ 0.2 times the expected for a Milky Way gas-to-dust value does a reasonable job of explaining A(H$α$) as a function of N(H). This could be expected if only ~ 40% of gas and dust directly overlap regions of H$α$ emission.
The newest generation of integral field unit spectrographs brings three-dimensional mapping of nearby galaxies one step closer. While the focus up to this point was mostly on stars and ionised gas, it is also possible to look at dust in a new, more complete way. Using MUSE science verification observations of NGC 5626, we map the interstellar matter in this dusty lenticular. We use the resolving power of MUSE to measure the optical attenuation with a spectral resolution of 6.25 Å, at physical scales of 0.1-1 kpc. The integrated attenuation curve of NGC 5626 shows a smooth, slightly steeper tha…
Dust attenuation is a crucial but highly uncertain parameter that hampers the determination of intrinsic galaxy properties, such as stellar masses, star formation rates and star formation histories. The shape of the dust attenuation law is not expected to be uniform between galaxies, nor within a galaxy. Our DustKING project was introduced at the first BINA workshop in 2016 and aims to study the variations of dust attenuation curves in nearby galaxies. At the second BINA workshop in 2018, I presented the results of our pilot study for the spiral galaxy NGC628. We find that the average attenuat…
Understanding how dust attenuation laws vary between and within galaxies is a key question if we want to reliably measure the physical properties of galaxies at both global and local scales. To shed new light on this question, we present a detailed study of the slope and bump strength of the attenuation law in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC628 at the resolved spatial scale of 325 pc. To do so, we have modelled a broad multi-wavelength dataset from the ultraviolet (UV) to the infrared (IR) with the state-of-the-art SED fitting code CIGALE, including SWIFT UVOT data for which we have developed a n…
Multi-wavelength images from the farUV (~0.15 micron) to the sub-millimeter of the central region of the galaxy NGC 3351 are analyzed to constrain its stellar populations and dust attenuation. Despite hosting a ~1 kpc circumnuclear starburst ring, NGC 3351 deviates from the IRX-beta relation, the relation between the infrared-to-UV luminosity ratio and the UV continuum slope (beta) that other starburst galaxies follow. To understand the reason for the deviation, we leverage the high angular resolution of archival nearUV-to-nearIR HST images to divide the ring into ~60-180 pc size regions and m…

(Abridged) The effective extinction law (attenuation behavior) in galaxies in the emitted ultraviolet is well known only for actively star-forming objects and combines effects of the grain properties, fine structure in the dust distribution, and relative distributions of stars and dust. We use GALEX, XMM Optical Monitor, and HST data to explore the UV attenuation in the outer parts of spiral disks which are backlit by other UV-bright galaxies, starting with candidates provided by Galaxy Zoo participants. Our analysis incorporates galaxy symmetry, using non-overlapping regions of each galaxy to…
The energetic feedback from supermassive black holes can influence star formation at the centres of galaxies. Observational evidence for active galactic nucleus (AGN) impact on star formation can be searched for in galaxies by combining ultraviolet imaging and optical integral field unit data. The ultraviolet flux directly traces recent star formation, and the integral field unit data can reveal dust attenuation, gas ionisation mechanisms, and gas kinematics from the central regions of the galaxy disk. A pilot study on NGC 3982 shows star formation suppression in the central regions of the gal…
Studying the UV dust attenuation, as well as its relation to other galaxy parameters such as the stellar mass, plays an important role in multi-wavelength research. This work relates the dust attenuation to the stellar mass of star forming galaxies, and its evolution with redshift. A sample of galaxies with an estimate of the dust attenuation computed from the infrared excess was used. The dust attenuation vs. stellar mass data, separated in redshift bins, was modelled by a single parameter linear function, assuming a nonzero constant apparent dust attenuation for low mass galaxies. But the or…
We present the highest resolution --- 15 pc (0.03'') --- ALMA $^{12}$CO(2-1) line emission and 1.3mm continuum maps, tracers of the molecular gas and dust, respectively, in the nearby merging galaxy system NGC 6240, that hosts two supermassive black holes growing simultaneously. These observations provide an excellent spatial match to existing Hubble optical and near-infrared observations of this system. A significant molecular gas mass, $\sim$9$\times$10$^9$M$_\odot$, is located in between the two nuclei, forming a clumpy stream kinematically dominated by turbulence, rather than a smooth rota…
We investigated the kinematic and excitation structure of the NGC 1068 narrow-line region (NLR). We obtained profiles of several emission lines, [OIII]$λ$5007, H$β$, [OI]$λ$6300 and [FeVII]$λ$6087 at high-velocity resolution (R ~ 7500 - 11000), and confirmed that they showed different profiles. These profiles are useful for understanding the NLR structure, as they cover a wide ionization potential range. By comparing the results with a photoionization model, we found that 1) blueshifted components at the center are very dense, 2) those in the northeast region have slightly lower densities than…
We present the highest resolution (1") $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations of molecular gas in the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625, to date, obtained with ALMA. Molecular gas is distributed in discrete clouds within an area of $0.4$ kpc$^2$ and does not have well-ordered large-scale motions. We measure a total molecular mass in NGC 625 of $5.3\times 10^6 M_\odot$, assuming a Milky Way CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. We use the CPROPS package to identify molecular clouds and measure their properties. The 19 resolved CO clouds have a median radius of 20 pc, a median line width 2.5 km s$^{-1}$, and a media…
We characterize the influence that inclination has on the shape and normalization in average dust attenuation curves derived from a sample of ~10,000 local star-forming galaxies. To do this we utilize aperture-matched multi-wavelength data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, and the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. We separate our sample into groups according to axial ratio (b/a) and obtain an estimate of their average total-to-selective attenuation $k(λ)$. The attenuation curves are found to be shallower at UV wavelengths with inc…

Interacting galaxies are known to have higher global rates of star formation on average than normal galaxies, relative to their stellar masses. Using UV and IR photometry combined with new and published H-alpha images, we have compared the star formation rates of ~700 star forming complexes in 46 nearby interacting galaxy pairs with those of regions in 39 normal spiral galaxies. The interacting galaxies have proportionally more regions with high star formation rates than the spirals. The most extreme regions in the interacting systems lie at the intersections of spiral/tidal structures, where …
We report high resolution imaging of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with a 50 ks Chandra HRC observation. The HRC image resolves the emission on spatial scales of 0.5", ~30 pc, showing an extended X-ray morphology overall consistent with the narrow line region (NLR) seen in optical line emission. Removal of the bright point-like nuclear source and image deconvolution techniques both reveal X-ray enhancements that closely match the substructures seen in the Hubble Space Telescope [OIII] image and prominent knots in the radio jet. We find that most of the NLR clouds in NGC…
Context: Pre-merger interactions between galaxies can induce significant changes in the morphologies and kinematics of the stellar and ISM components. Large amounts of gas and stars are often found to be disturbed or displaced as tidal debris. This debris then evolves, sometimes forming stars and occasionally tidal dwarf galaxies. Here we present results from our HI study of Arp 65, an interacting pair hosting extended HI tidal debris. Aims: In an effort to understand the evolution of tidal debris produced by interacting pairs of galaxies, including in situ star and tidal dwarf galaxy formatio…
We use a sample of star-forming field and protocluster galaxies at z=2.0-2.5 with Keck/MOSFIRE K-band spectra, a wealth of rest-frame UV photometry, and Spitzer/MIPS and Herschel/PACS observations, to dissect the relation between the ratio of IR to UV luminosity (IRX) versus UV slope ($β$) as a function of gas-phase metallicity (12+log(O/H)~8.2-8.7). We find no significant dependence of the IRX-$β$ trend on environment. However, we find that at a given $β$, IRX is highly correlated with metallicity, and less correlated with mass, age, and sSFR. We conclude that, of the physical properties test…

It is important to investigate the relationships between the power sources and the chemical compositions of galaxies for understanding the scenario of galaxy evolution. We carried out an unbiased molecular line survey towards AGN host galaxy NGC1068, and prototypical starburst galaxies, NGC 253 and IC 342, with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope in the 3-mm band. The advantage of this line survey is that the obtained spectra have the highest angular resolution ever obtained with single-dish telescopes. In particular, the beam size of this telescope is ~15"--19", which is able to spatially separate th…
We use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations from Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS-N) of a group of four H II regions and the surrounding gas in the central region of the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC 4670. At spatial scales of $\sim$ 9 pc, we map the spatial distribution of a variety of physical properties of the ionised gas: internal dust attenuation, kinematics, stellar age, star-formation rate, emission line ratios and chemical abundances. The region of study is found to be photoionised. Using the robust direct T$_e$-method, we estimate metallicity, nitrogen-to-…
Using multi-band data we examine the star formation activity of the nearby group-dominant early-type galaxies of the Complete Local-volume Groups Sample (CLoGS), and the relation between star formation, gas content, and local environment. Only a small fraction of the galaxies (13%; 6/47) are found to be Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) bright, with FUV to near-infrared colours indicative of recent active star formation (NGC 252, NGC 924, NGC 940, NGC 1106, NGC 7252, and ESO 507-25). These systems are lenticulars presenting the highest FUV specific star-formation rates in the sample (sSFR FUV > 5$\times$1…
We derive molecular-gas-phase $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotope ratios for the central few 100 pc of the three nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253, NGC 1068, and NGC 4945 making use of the $λ$ $\sim$ 3 mm $^{12}$CN and $^{13}$CN $N$ = 1--0 lines in the ALMA Band 3. The $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios derived from the ratios of these lines range from 30 to 67 with an average of 41.6 $\pm$ 0.2 in NGC 253, from 24 to 62 with an average of 38.3 $\pm$ 0.4 in NGC 1068, and from 6 to 44 with an average of 16.9 $\pm$ 0.3 in NGC 4945. The highest $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratios are determined in some of the …
Secular and environmental effects play a significant role in regulating the star formation rate and hence the evolution of the galaxies. Since UV flux is a direct tracer of the star formation in galaxies, the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard ASTROSAT enables us to characterize the star forming regions in a galaxy with its remarkable spatial resolution. In this study, we focus on the secular evolution of NGC 628, a spiral galaxy in the local universe. We exploit the resolution of UVIT to resolve up to $\sim$ 63 pc in NGC 628 for identification and characterization of the star formin…
We present the highest resolution CO (2-1) observations obtained to date (0.25") of NGC 3256 and use them to determine the detailed properties of the molecular interstellar medium in the central 6 kpc of this merger. Distributions of physical quantities are reported from pixel-by-pixel measurements at 55 and 120 pc scales and compared to disc galaxies observed by PHANGS-ALMA. Mass surface densities range from 8 to 5500 M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$ and velocity dispersions from 10 to 200 km s$^{-1}$. Peak brightness temperatures as large as 37 K are measured, indicating the gas in NGC 3256 may be hott…
The azimuthal variation of the HII region oxygen abundance in spiral galaxies is a key observable for understanding how quickly oxygen produced by massive stars can be dispersed within the surrounding interstellar medium. Observational constraints on the prevalence and magnitude of such azimuthal variations remain rare in the literature. Here, we report the discovery of pronounced azimuthal variations of HII region oxygen abundance in NGC 2997, a spiral galaxy at approximately 11.3 Mpc. Using 3D spectroscopic data from the TYPHOON Program, we study the HII region oxygen abundance at a physical…
H$_2$O MegaMaser emission may arise from thin gas discs surrounding the massive nuclei of galaxies such as NGC\,4258, but the physical conditions responsible for the amplified emission are unclear. A detailed view of these regions is possible using the very high angular resolution afforded by space very long baseline interferometry (SVLBI). Here we report SVLBI experiments conducted using the orbiting RadioAstron Observatory that have resulted in detections of the H$_2$O 22 GHz emission in NGC\,4258, with Earth-space baselines of 1.3, 9.5 and 19.5 Earth diameters. Observations at the highest a…
We investigate the stellar disk structure of six nearby edge-on spiral galaxies using high-resolution JHKs-band images and 3D radiative transfer models. To explore how mass and environment shape spiral disks, we selected galaxies with rotational velocities between 69 < Vrot < 245 km/sec, and two with unusual morphologies. We find a wide diversity of disk structure. Of the fast-rotating (Vrot > 150 km/sec) galaxies, only NGC 4013 has the super-thin+thin+thick nested disk structure seen in NGC 891 and the Milky Way, albeit with decreased oblateness, while NGC 1055, a disturbed massive spiral gal…
We study the relationship between dense gas and star formation in the Antennae galaxies by comparing ALMA observations of dense gas tracers (HCN, HCO$^+$, and HNC $\mathrm{J}=1-0$) to the total infrared luminosity ($\mathrm{L_{TIR}}$) calculated using data from the \textit{Herschel} Space Observatory and the \textit{Spitzer} Space Telescope. We compare the luminosities of our SFR and gas tracers using aperture photometry and employing two methods for defining apertures. We taper the ALMA dataset to match the resolution of our $\mathrm{L_{TIR}}$ maps and present new detections of dense gas emis…
During galaxy-galaxy interactions, massive gas clouds can be injected into the intergalactic medium which in turn become gravitationally bound, collapse and form stars, star clusters or even dwarf galaxies. The objects resulting from this process are both "pristine", as they are forming their first generation of stars, and chemically evolved because the metallicity inherited from their parent galaxies is high. Such characteristics make them particularly interesting laboratories to study star formation. After having investigated their star-forming properties, we use photospheric, nebular and du…

The Carnegie-Chicago Hubble Program (CCHP) is undertaking a re-calibration of the extragalactic distance scale, using Type Ia supernovae that are tied to Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) distances to local galaxies. We present here deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC imaging of the resolved stellar populations in the metal-poor halos of the SN Ia host galaxies NGC 4424, NGC 4526, and NGC 4536. These three Virgo constellation galaxies are prime targets for calibrating the extragalactic distance scale given their relative proximity in the local Universe and their low line-of-sight redden…
The gamma-ray bursts hosts (GRBHs) are excellent targets to study the extinction properties of dust and its effects on the global emission of distant galaxies. The dust extinction curve is measured along the GRB afterglow line of sight and the analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the host galaxy gives access to the global dust attenuation of the stellar light. We selected a sample of 30 GRBs for which the extinction curve along the GRB afterglow line-of-sight (l.o.s) is measured in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) up to optical and we analysed the properties of the extinction c…
One of the major sources of X-ray emitting hot gas around galaxies is the feedback from supernovae (SNe), but most of this metal-enriched feedback material is often not directly detected in X-ray observations. This missing galactic feedback problem is extremely prominent in early-type galaxy bulges where there is little cool gas to make the SNe ejecta radiate at lower temperature beyond the X-ray domain. We herein present a deep Suzaku observation of an S0 galaxy NGC5866, which is relatively rich in molecular gas as an S0 galaxy and shows significant evidence of cool-hot gas interaction. By jo…
We present a comprehensive study of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the metal-poor galaxy NGC 6822 using IRAC and MIPS data obtained from the {\em Spitzer Space Telescope}. We find over 500 new YSO candidates in seven massive star-formation regions; these sources were selected using six colour-magnitude cuts. Via spectral energy distribution fitting to the data with YSO radiative transfer models we refine this list, identifying 105 high-confidence and 88 medium-confidence YSO candidates. For these sources we constrain their evolutionary state and estimate their physical properties. The…
