The exceptional point, known as the non-Hermitian degeneracy, has special topological structure, leading to various counterintuitive phenomena and novel applications, which are refreshing our cognition of quantum physics. One particularly intriguing behavior is the mode switch phenomenon induced by dynamically encircling an exceptional point in the parameter space. While these mode switches have been explored in classical systems, the experimental investigation in the quantum regime remains elusive due to the difficulty of constructing time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in a real quantum system. Here we experimentally demonstrate dynamically encircling the exceptional point with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are realized utilizing a dilation method. Both the asymmetric and symmetric mode switches have been observed. Our work reveals the topological structure of the exceptional point and paves the way to comprehensively explore the exotic properties of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in the quantum regime.
Dynamical encircling exceptional point(EP) shows a number of intriguing physical phenomena and its potential applications. To enrich the manipulations of optical systems in experiment, here, we study the dynamical encircling EP, i.e. state transfer process, in largely detuned multimode optomechanical system. The process of state transfer has been investigated with different factors about the location of start point, the orientation and the initial state of the trajectories around the EP in parameter space. Results show that the nonreciprocal and the chiral topological energy transfer between t…
Physical systems with loss or gain feature resonant modes that are decaying or growing exponentially with time. Whenever two such modes coalesce both in their resonant frequency and their rate of decay or growth, a so-called "exceptional point" occurs, around which many fascinating phenomena have recently been reported to arise. Particularly intriguing behavior is predicted to appear when encircling an exceptional point sufficiently slowly, like a state-flip or the accumulation of a geometric phase. Experiments dedicated to this issue could already successfully explore the topological structur…
We have investigated the exceptional points (EPs) which are degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, in the case that three modes are interacting with each other. Even though the parametric evolution of the modes cannot be uniquely determined when encircling more than two EPs once, we can recover the initial configuration of the modes by encircling two EPs three times or three EPs twice. We confirm our expectation by numerically calculating the modes of an open quantum system, two dielectric microdisks, and 3$\times$3 matrix model.
The efficient transfer of excitations between different levels of a quantum system is a task with many applications. Among the various protocols to carry out such a state transfer in driven systems, rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) is one of the most widely used. Here we show both theoretically and experimentally that adding a suitable amount of loss to the driven Hamiltonian turns a RAP protocol into a scheme for encircling an exceptional point including the chiral state transfer associated with it. Our work thus discloses an intimate connection between a whole body of literature on RAP and rece…
Exceptional points (EPs) have recently attracted considerable attention in the study of non-Hermitian systems and in applications such as sensors and mode switching. In particular, nontrivial topological structures of EPs have been studied intensively in relation to encircling EPs. Thus, EP generation is currently an important issue in several fields. To generate multiple EPs, multiple levels or composite physical systems have been employed with Hermitian couplings. In this study, we generate multiple EPs on two-level systems in a single microcavity by adopting the non-Hermitian coupling of a …
Quantum heat engines are expected to outperform the classical counterparts due to quantum coherences involved. Here we experimentally execute a single-ion quantum heat engine and demonstrate, for the first time, the dynamics and the enhanced performance of the heat engine originating from the Liouvillian exceptional points (LEPs). In addition to the topological effects related to LEPs, we focus on thermodynamic effects, which can be understood by the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg process under decoherence. We witness a positive net work from the quantum heat engine if the heat engine cycle dynamica…
Level repulsion is associated with exceptional points which are square root singularities of the energies as functions of a (complex) interaction parameter. This is also valid for resonance state energies. Using this concept it is argued that level anti-crossing (crossing) must imply crossing (anti-crossing) of the corresponding widths of the resonance states. Further, itis shown that an encircling of an exceptional point induces a phase change of one wave function but not of the other. An experimental setup is discussed where this phase behaviour which differs from the one encountered at a di…
We revisit the complex time method for the application to quantum dynamics as an exceptional point is encircled in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian. The basic idea of the complex time method is using complex contour integration to perform the first-order adiabatic perturbation integral. In this way, the quantum dynamical problem is transformed to a study of singularities in the complex time plane -- transition points -- which represent complex degeneracies of the adiabatic Hamiltonian as the time-dependent parameters defining the encircling contour are analytically continued to complex p…
Eigenmode coalescence imparts remarkable properties to non-hermitian time evolution, culminating in a purely non-hermitian spectral degeneracy known as an exceptional point (EP). Here, we revisit time evolution at the EP and classify two-level non-hermitian Hamiltonians in terms of the Möbius group. We then leverage that classification to study dynamical EP encircling, by applying it to periodically-modulated (Floquet) Hamiltonians. This reveals that Floquet non-hermitian systems exhibit rich physics whose complexity is not captured by an EP-encircling rule. For example, Floquet EPs can occur …
Spontaneous symmetry breaking has revolutionized the understanding in numerous fields of modern physics. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system in which an atomic ensemble interacts coherently with a single resonant cavity mode. The interacting system can be effectively described by two coupled oscillators with positive and negative mass when the two-level atoms are prepared in their excited states. The occurrence of symmetry breaking is controlled by the atomic detuning and the coupling to the cavity mode, …
We develop perturbative methods to study and control dynamical phenomena related to exceptional points in Non-Hermitian systems. In particular, we show how to find perturbative solutions based on the Magnus expansion that accurately describe the evolution of non-Hermitian systems when encircling an exceptional point. This allows us to use the recently proposed Magnus-based strategy for control to design fast non-reciprocal, topological operations whose fidelity error is orders of magnitude smaller than their much slower adiabatic counterparts.
We study the quantum evolution of a non-Hermitian qubit realized as a submanifold of a dissipative superconducting transmon circuit. Real-time tuning of the system parameters to encircle an exceptional point results in non-reciprocal quantum state transfer. We further observe chiral geometric phases accumulated under state transport, verifying the quantum coherent nature of the evolution in the complex energy landscape and distinguishing between coherent and incoherent effects associated with exceptional point encircling. Our work demonstrates an entirely new method for control over quantum st…
Eigenstates of a non-Hermitian system exist on complex Riemannian manifolds, with multiple sheets connecting at branch cuts and exceptional points (EPs). These eigenstates can evolve across different sheets, a process that naturally corresponds to state permutation. Here, we report the first experimental realization of non-Abelian permutations in a three-state non- Hermitian system. Our approach relies on the stroboscopic encircling of two different exceptional arcs (EAs), which are smooth trajectories of order-2 EPs appearing from the coalescence of two adjacent states. The non-Abelian charac…
We investigate a parity-time (PT) symmetric system that consists of two symmetrically coupled asymmetric dimers. The enclosed magnetic flux controls the PT phase transition. The system can reenter the exact PT-symmetric phase from a broken PT-symmetric phase with large non-Hermiticity. Two-state coalescence may have one or two defective eigenstates. The topology of exceptional points is reflected by the magnetic flux independent phase rigidity scaling exponents. The topology changes when exceptional points coincide. The geometric phases accumulate when encircling the exceptional points and var…
In a recent paper entitled "Winding around non-Hermitian singularities" by Zhong et al., published in Nat. Commun. 9, 4808 (2018), a formalism is proposed for calculating the permutations of eigenstates that arise upon encircling (multiple) exceptional points (EPs) in the complex parameter plane of an analytic non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The authors suggest that upon encircling EPs one should track the eigenvalue branch cuts that are traversed, and multiply the associated permutation matrices accordingly. In this comment we point out a serious shortcoming of this approach, illustrated by an exp…
We demonstrate general classifications of Riemann surface topology generated by multiple arbitrary-order exceptional points of quasi-stationary states. Our studies reveal all possible product permutations of holonomy matrices that describe a stroboscopic encircling of 2nd order exceptional points. The permutations turn out to be categorized into a finite number of classes according to the topological structures of the Riemann surfaces. We further show that the permutation classes can be derived from combinations of cyclic building blocks associated with higher-order exceptional points. Our res…
In Bose-Einstein condensates with an attractive contact interaction the stable ground state and an unstable excited state emerge in a tangent bifurcation at a critical value of the scattering length. At the bifurcation point both the energies and the wave functions of the two states coalesce, which is the characteristic of an exceptional point. In numerical simulations signatures of the exceptional point can be observed by encircling the bifurcation point in the complex extended space of the scattering length, however, this method cannot be applied in an experiment. Here we show in which way t…
The appearance of so-called exceptional points in the complex spectra of non-Hermitian systems is often associated with phenomena that contradict our physical intuition. One example of particular interest is the state-exchange process predicted for an adiabatic encircling of an exceptional point. In this work we analyse this and related processes for the generic system of two coupled oscillator modes with loss or gain. We identify a characteristic system evolution consisting of periods of quasi-stationarity interrupted by abrupt non-adiabatic transitions, and we present a qualitative and quant…
For an arbitrary possibly non-Hermitian matrix Hamiltonian H, that might involve exceptional points, we construct an appropriate parameter space M and the lines bundle L^n over M such that the adiabatic geometric phases associated with the eigenstates of the initial Hamiltonian coincide with the holonomies of L^n. We examine the case of 2 x 2 matrix Hamiltonians in detail and show that, contrary to claims made in some recent publications, geometric phases arising from encircling exceptional points are generally geometrical and not topological in nature.
The defining characteristic of an exceptional point (EP) in the parameter space of a family of operators is that upon encircling the EP eigenstates are permuted. In case one encircles multiple EPs, the question arises how to properly compose the effects of the individual EPs. This was thought to be ambiguous. We show that one can solve this problem by considering based loops and their deformations. The theory of fundamental groups allows to generalize this technique to arbitrary degeneracy structures like exceptional lines in a three-dimensional parameter space. As permutations of three or mor…
Physical systems with gain and loss can be described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, which is degenerated at the exceptional points (EPs). Many new and unexpected features have been explored in the non-Hermitian systems with a great deal of recent interest. One of the most fascinating features is that, chiral state conversion appears when one EP is encircled dynamically. Here, we propose an easy-controllable levitated microparticle system that carries a pair of EPs and realize slow evolution of the Hamiltonian along loops in the parameter plane. Utilizing the controllable rotation angle, gain …
We report on the dynamical formation of exceptional degeneracies in basic correlation functions of non-integrable one- and two-dimensional systems quenched to the vicinity of a critical point. Remarkably, fine-tuned semi-metallic points in the phase diagram of the considered systems are thereby promoted to topologically robust non-Hermitian (NH) nodal phases emerging in the coherent long-time evolution of a dynamically equilibrating system. In the framework of non-equilibrium Green's function methods within the conserving second Born approximation, we predict observable signatures of these nov…

The ordinary time-dependent perturbation theory of quantum mechanics, that describes the interaction of a stationary system with a time-dependent perturbation, predicts that the transition probabilities induced by the perturbation are symmetric with respect to the initial an final states. Here we extend time-dependent perturbation theory into the non-Hermitian realm and consider the transitions in a stationary Hermitian system, described by a self-adjoint Hamiltonian $\hat{H}_0$, induced by a time-dependent non-Hermitian interaction $f(t) \hat{P}$. In the weak interaction (perturbative) limit,…
Open quantum systems interacting with an environment exhibit dynamics described by the combination of dissipation and coherent Hamiltonian evolution. Taken together, these effects are captured by a Liouvillian superoperator. The degeneracies of the (generically non-Hermitian) Liouvillian are exceptional points, which are associated with critical dynamics as the system approaches steady state. We use a superconducting transmon circuit coupled to an engineered environment to observe two different types of Liouvillian exceptional points that arise either from the interplay of energy loss and deco…
A comment has been recently posted on the arXiv (arXiv:1902.07504) that discuss our recent work on encircling multiple exceptional points in Nat. Commun. 9, 4808 (2018). In that comment, the authors claim that our approach is prone to errors. In discussing their findings, they also indicate that a method presented by their team in Phys. Rev. A 98, 023818 (2018) (presumed to give correct results in all situations) was published prior to our work. First, we would like to note that both their work and ours were posted on the arXiv within a week from each other. Second and more importantly, as we …
Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles formed by strongly interacting photons and excitons (electron-hole pairs) in semiconductor microcavities. They have emerged as a robust solid-state platform for next-generation optoelectronic applications as well as fundamental studies of quantum many-body physics. Importantly, exciton-polaritons are a profoundly open (i.e., non-Hermitian) quantum system: it requires constant pumping of energy and continuously decays releasing coherent radiation. Thus, the exciton-polaritons always exist in a balanced potential landscape of gain and los…
