We are concerned with the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the Euler equations for barotropic compressible fluids in $\mathbb{R}^3$. When the viscosity coefficients obey a lower power-law of the density (i.e., $ρ^δ$ with $0<δ<1$), we identify a quasi-symmetric hyperbolic--singular elliptic coupled structure of the Navier-Stokes equations to control the behavior of the velocity of the fluids near the vacuum. Then this structure is employed to prove that there exists a unique regular solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem with arbitrarily large initial data and far-field vacuum, whose life span is uniformly positive in the vanishing viscosity limit. Some uniform estimates on both the local sound speed and the velocity in $H^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with respect to the viscosity coefficients are also obtained, which lead to the strong convergence of the regular solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with finite mass and energy to the corresponding regular solutions of the Euler equations in $L^{\infty}([0, T]; H^{s}_{\rm loc}(\mathbb{R}^3))$ for any $s\in [2, 3)$. As a consequence, we show that, for both viscous and inviscid flows, it is impossible that the $L^\infty$ norm of any global regular solution with vacuum decays to zero asymptotically, as $t$ tends to infinity. Our framework developed here is applicable to the same problem for the other physical dimensions via some minor modifications.
We prove the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the one-dimensional barotropic Navier-Stokes system with degenerate viscosity $μ(ρ)=ρ^α$. We establish that the smooth solutions have possibly two different far-fields, and the initial density remains positive globally in time, for the initial data satisfying the same conditions. In addition, our result works for any $α>0$, i.e., for a large class of degenerate viscosities. In particular, our models include the viscous shallow water equations. This extends the result of Constantin-Drivas-Nguyen-Pasqualotto \cite[Theorem 1.5]{C…
This paper concerns the existence of global weak solutions to the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients. We construct suitable approximate system which has smooth solutions satisfying the energy inequality, the BD entropy one, and the Mellet-Vasseur type estimate. Then, after adapting the compactness results due to Mellet-Vasseur [Comm. Partial Differential Equations 32 (2007)], we obtain the global existence of weak solutions to the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients in two or three dimensiona…
We are concerned about the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosities which may degenerate in vacuum. We show that any classical solution to barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains will blow up, when the initial density admits an isolated mass group and the viscousity coefficients satisfy some conditions. A new condition on viscosities is first put forward in this paper.
We study the lagrangian structure for weak solutions of two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for a non-barotropic compressible fluid, i.e. we show the uniqueness of particle trajectories for two dimensional compressible fluids including the energy equation. Our result extends partially the result obtained for barotropic fluids by Hoff and Santos (2008).
We study the system of equations which describes barotropic (isentropic) flows of viscous compressible multi-fluids (mixtures of fluids). We study the relations between pressure, densities, concentrations, viscosities and other parameters of the flow and of the medium.
We consider the model of viscous compressible homogeneous multi-fluids with multiple velocities. We review different formulations of the model and the existence results for boundary value problems. We analyze crucial mathematical difficulties which arise during the proof of the existence theorems.
We consider the equations of a multi-velocity model of a binary mixture of viscous compressible fluids (two-fluid medium) in the case of one-dimensional barotropic motions. We prove the global (in time) existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to the initial-boundary value problem describing the motion in a bounded spatial domain.
In this paper we consider the barotropic compressible quantum Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent viscosity and its limit when the scaled Planck constant vanish. Following recent works on degenerate compressible Navier-Stokes equations, we prove the global existence of weak solutions by the use of a singular pressure close to vacuum. With such singular pressure, we can use the standard definition of global weak solutions which also allows to justify the limit when the scaled Planck constant denoted by $ε$ tends to 0.
In this paper, we will show the blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations and isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant and degenerate viscosities in arbitrary dimensions under some restrictions on the initial data. In particular, the results hold true for the full compressible Euler equations and isentropic compressible Euler equations and the blow-up time can be computed in a more precise way. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contain vacuum in any finite regions. Moreover, a simplifie…
In this paper, we study some model problem associated to the free boundary value problem of the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in general smooth domain with taking surface tension into account. To obtain the maximal $L_p-L_q$ regularity property of the model problem, we prove the existence of $\mathcal{R}-$bounded operator families of the resolvent problem via Weis' theory on operator valued Fourier multipliers.
In this paper we study a vanishing pressure process for highly compressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Mach number tends to infinity. We first prove the global existence of weak solutions for the pressureless system in the framework [Li-Xin, arXiv:1504.06826v2], where the weak solutions are established for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscous coefficients. Furthermore, a rate of convergence of the density in $L^{\infty}\left(0,T;L^{2}(\rr)\right)$ is obtained, in case when the velocity corresponds to the gradient of density at initial time.
For barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three-dimensional (3D) bounded domains, we prove that any finite energy weak solution obtained by Lions [Mathematical topics in fluid mechanics, Vol. 2. Compressible models(1998)] and Feireisl-Novotný-Petzeltová [J. Math. Fluid Mech. 3(2001), 358-392] decays exponentially to the equilibrium state. This result is established by both using the extra integrability of the density due to Lions and constructing a suitable Lyapunov functional just under the framework of Lions-Feireisl's weak solutions.
Recently, A. Vasseur and C. Yu have proved the existence of global entropy-weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with viscosities $ν(\varrho)=μ\varrho$ and $λ(\varrho)=0$ and a pressure law under the form $p(\varrho)=a\varrho^γ$ with $a>0$ and $γ>1$ constants. In this note, we propose a non-trivial relative entropy for such system in a periodic box and give some applications. This extends, in some sense, results with constant viscosities initiated by E. Feiersl, B.J. Jin and A. Novotny. We present some mathematical results related to the weak-strong uniqueness, convergence…
This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations on the whole two-dimensional space with vacuum as far field density. In particular, the initial density can have compact support. When the shear and the bulk viscosities are a positive constant and a power function of the density respectively, it is proved that the two-dimensional Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations admits a unique local strong solution provided the initial density decays not too slow at infinity. Moreover, if the initial data satisfy some additional regularity …
Local well-posedness of strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and far field vacuum in 3D exterior domains
This paper is devoted to studying the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosities given by $μ=ρ^α,λ=ρ^α(α>0)$. We establish the global existence and optimal decay rates of classical solutions under the assumptions of small initial data in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^3)\cap L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ and the viscosity constraint $|α-1|\ll 1$. The key idea of our proof lies in the combination of Green's function method, energy method and a time-decay regularity criterion. In contrast to previous works, the Sobolev norms of the spatial d…

The aim of this work is to prove the weak-strong uniqueness principle for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system on an exterior domain, with an isentropic pressure of the type $p(\varrho)=a\varrho^γ$ and allowing the density to be close or equal to zero. In particular, the result will be first obtained for an adiabatic exponent $γ\in [9/5,2]$ and afterwards, this range will be slightly enlarged via pressure estimates "up to the boundary", deduced relaying on boundedness of a proper singular integral operator.
We consider the local well-posedness of strong and classical solutions to the three-dimensional barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density containing vacuum initially. We first prove the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solutions, where the initial compatibility condition proposed in \cite{cho1,K2,coi1} is removed under suitable sense. Then, the continuous of strong solutions on the initial data is derived under an additional compatibility condition. Moreover, for the initial data satisfying some additional regularity and compatibility condition, the strong soluti…
Strong solutions to the initial-boundary-value problem of compressible MHD equations with degenerate viscosities and far field vacuum in 3D exterior domains
In this paper, we extend considerably the global existence results of entropy-weak solutions related to compressible Navier-Stokes system with density dependent viscosities obtained, independently (using different strategies), by Vasseur-Yu [Inventiones mathematicae (2016) and arXiv:1501.06803 (2015)] and by Li-Xin [arXiv:1504.06826 (2015)].More precisely we are able to consider a physical symmetric viscous stress tensor $σ=2μ(ρ)\,{\mathbb{D}}(u)+\bigl(λ(ρ){\rm div}u -P(ρ)\bigr)\, {\rm Id}$ where ${\mathbb D}(u) = [\nabla u + \nabla^T u]/2$ with a shear and bulk viscosities (respectively $μ(ρ)…
This paper addresses the issue of global existence of so-called $κ$-entropy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous compressible and barotropic fluids with degenerate viscosities. We consider the three dimensional space domain with periodic boundary conditions. Our solutions satisfy the weak formulation of the mass and momentum conservation equations and also a generalization of the BD-entropy identity called: $κ$-entropy. This new entropy involves a mixture parameter $κ\in (0,1)$ between the two velocities $\bf{u}$ and $\bf{u} + 2\nablaφ(\varrho)$ (the latter was introduced by th…
In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities is considered. By introducing some new variables and making use of the "quasi-symmetric hyperbolic"-"degenerate elliptic" coupled structure to control the behavior of the fluid velocity, we prove the global-in-time well-posedness of regular solutions with vacuum for a class of smooth initial data that are of small density but possibly large velocities. Here the initial mass density is required to decay to zero in the far field, and the spectrum of the Ja…
In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is considered. When viscosity coefficients are given as a constant multiple of the density's power ($ρ^δ$ with $0<δ<1$), based on some analysis of the nonlinear structure of this system, we identify the class of initial data admitting a local regular solution with far field vacuum and finite energy in some inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces by introducing some new variables and initial compatibility conditions, which solves an open problem of degenerate viscous flow partially mentioned b…
In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscosities under the assumption that the initial density is bounded away from zero.
We consider barotropic motions described by the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a box with periodic boundary conditions. We are looking for density $\varrho$ in the form $\varrho=a+η$, where $a$ is a constant and $η|_{t=0}$ is sufficiently small in $H^2$-norm. We assume existence of potentials $φ$ and $ψ$ such that $v=\nablaφ+\mathrm{rot}ψ$. Next we assume that $\nablaφ|_{t=0}$ is sufficiently small in $H^2$-norm too. Finally, we assume that the second viscosity coefficient $ν$ is sufficiently large. Then we prove long time existence of solutions such that $v\in L_\infty(0,T;H^2(Ω))\ca…
Local-in-time well-posedness for the regular solution to the 2D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and heat conductivity
In this paper, we prove the energy conservation for the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for any time $t>0$, under certain conditions. The results hold for the renormalized solutions of the equations with constant viscosities, as well as the weak solutions of the equations with degenerate viscosity. Our conditions do not depend on the dimensions. The energy may conserve on the vacuum for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosities. Our results are the first ones on the energy conservation for the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes …
We consider viscous compressible barotropic motions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ with the Dirichlet boundary conditions for velocity. We assume the existence of some special sufficiently regular solutions $v_s$ (velocity), $\varrho_s$ (density) of the problem. By the special solutions we can choose spherically symmetric solutions. Let $v$, $\varrho$ be a~solution to our problem. Then we are looking for differences $u=v-v_s$, $η=\varrho-\varrho_s$. We prove existence of $u$, $η$ such that $u,η\in L_\infty(kT,(k+1)T;H^2(Ω))$, $u_t,η_t\in L_\infty(kT,(k+1)T;H^1(Ω))$, $u\in L_2(kT,(…
In the recent paper, the global-in-time inviscid limit of the three-dimensional (3D) isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is considered. First, when viscosity coefficients are given as a constant multiple of density's power ($(ρ^ε)^δ$ with $δ>1$), for regular solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem, via introducing one "quasi-symmetric hyperbolic"--"degenerate elliptic" coupled structure to control the behavior of the velocity near the vacuum, we establish the uniform energy estimates for the local sound speed in $H^3$ and $(ρ^ε)^{\frac{δ-1}{2}}$ in $H^2$ with respect to the v…
Regularity and uniqueness of weak solutions of the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity coefficients is proven for small time in dimension $N=2,3$ under periodic boundary conditions. In this paper, the initial density is not required to have a positive lower bound and the pressure law is assumed to satisfy a condition that reduces to $P(ρ)=aρ^γ$ with $γ>1$ (in dimension three, additional conditions of size will be ask on $γ$). The second part of the paper is devoted to blow-up criteria for slightly subcritical initial data for the scaling of the equations whe…
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the 3D compressible bipolar Navier--Stokes--Poisson (BNSP) system with unequal viscosities, and our main purpose is three--fold: First, under the assumption that $H^l\cap L^1$($l\geq 3$)--norm of the initial data is small, we prove the optimal time decay rates of the solution as well as its all--order spatial derivatives from one--order to the highest--order, which are the same as those of the compressible Navier--Stokes equations and the heat equation. Second, for well--chosen initial data, we also show the lower bounds on the decay rates. Th…
Nonlinearly Exponential Stability for Lions-Feireisl's Weak Solutions to the Barotropic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Potential External Forces
We show the existence of global weak solutions to the three-dimensional compressible primitive equations of atmospheric dynamics with degenerate viscosities. In analogy with the case of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the weak solutions satisfy the basic energy inequality, the Bresh-Desjardins entropy inequality and the Mellet-Vasseur estimate. These estimates play an important role in establishing the compactness of the vertical velocity of the approximating solutions, and therefore are essential to recover the vertical velocity in the weak solutions.
Space-time behaviors for 3D compressible bipolar Navier-Stokes-Poisson system (BNSP) with unequal viscosities are given. The space-time estimate of electric field $\nablaϕ$ is the most important thing when deducing generalized Huygens' principle for BNSP since this estimate only can be obtained by $\nablaϕ=\frac{\nabla}Δ(ρ-n)$ from the Poisson equation. Thus, it requires to prove that the space-time estimate of $ρ-n$ only contains diffusion wave. The appearance of these unequal coefficients results that one cannot follow ideas for the special case, where the original system was rewritten as a …
In this paper we study the zero dissipation limit of the one-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes(CNS) equations with temperature-dependent viscosity and heat-conduction coefficient. It is proved that given a rarefaction wave with one-side vacuum state to the full compressible Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to the full CNS equations which converge to the above rarefaction wave with vacuum as the viscosity and the heat conduction coefficient tend to zero. Moreover, the uniform convergence rate is obtained. The main difficulty in our proof lies in the degeneraci…
We prove that the smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional compressible barotropic magnetohydrodynamic equations with conserved total mass and finite total energy lose the initial smoothness within a finite time. Further, we show that the same result holds for the solution to the Cauchy problem for the multidimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system. Moreover, for the solution with a finite momentum of inertia we get the two-sided estimates of different components of total energy.
We study a possibility of existence of localized two-dimensional structures, both smooth and non-smooth, that can move without significant change of their shape in a leading stream of compressible barotropic fluid on a rotating plane.
We consider the compressible (barotropic) Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains, supplemented with slip boundary conditions. Our approach is based on penalization of the boundary behaviour, viscosity, and the pressure in the weak formulation. Global-in-time weak solutions are obtained.
We shall deal with both the barotropic and the full compressible Euler system in multiple space dimensions. Both systems are particular examples of hyperbolic conservation laws. Whereas for scalar conservation laws there exists a well-known complete well-posedness theory, and for one-dimensional systems one also has achieved several results on existence and uniqueness, in the case of multi-dimensional systems there are even negative results regarding uniqueness: With the so-called convex integration method it is possible to show that there exist initial data for which the compressible Euler eq…
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous compressible fluid interacting with the outer world through general in/out flux boundary conditions. We consider a hard--sphere type pressure EOS and show that all trajectories eventually enter a bounded absorbing set. In particular, the associated omega-limit sets are compact and support a stationary statistical solution.
In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) full compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) with zero thermal conductivity is considered. First, when shear and bulk viscosity coefficients both depend on the absolute temperature $θ$ in a power law ($θ^ν$ with $ν>0$) of Chapman-Enskog, based on some elaborate analysis of this system's intrinsic singular structures, we identify one class of initial data admitting a local-in-time regular solution with far field vacuum in terms of the mass density $ρ$, velocity $u$ and entropy $S$. Furthermore, it is shown that within its life…
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a barotropic fluid with density dependent viscosity confined in a three-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$. We show the convergence of the weak solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes system to the strong solution to the compressible Euler system when the viscosity and the damping coefficients tend to zero.
