Let $ n, q $ be positive integers. We show that if $ G $ is a finitely generated residually finite group satisfying the identity $ [x,_ny^q]\equiv 1, $ then there exists a function $ f(n) $ such that $ G $ has a nilpotent subgroup of finite index of class at most $ f(n) $. We also extend this result to locally graded groups.
Let $m,n$ be positive integers. Suppose that $G$ is a residually finite group in which for every element $x \in G$ there exists a positive integer $q=q(x) \leqslant m$ such that $x^q$ is $n$-Engel. We show that $G$ is locally virtually nilpotent. Further, let $w$ be a multilinear commutator and $G$ a residually finite group in which for every product of at most $896$ $w$-values $x$ there exists a positive integer $q=q(x)$ dividing $m$ such that $x^q$ is $n$-Engel. Then $w(G)$ is locally virtually nilpotent.
Let $q$ be a prime. Let $G$ be a residually finite group satisfying an identity. Suppose that for every $x \in G$ there exists a $q$-power $m=m(x)$ such that the element $x^m$ is a bounded Engel element. We prove that $G$ is locally virtually nilpotent. Further, let $d,n$ be positive integers and $w$ a non-commutator word. Assume that $G$ is a $d$-generator residually finite group in which all $w$-values are $n$-Engel. We show that the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ has $\{d,n,w\}$-bounded nilpotency class.
Given a group-word w and a group G, the verbal subgroup w(G) is the one generated by all w-values in G. The word w is said to be concise if w(G) is finite whenever the set of w-values in G is finite. In the sixties P. Hall asked whether every word is concise but later Ivanov answered this question in the negative. On the other hand, Hall's question remains wide open in the class of residually finite groups. In the present article we show that various generalizations of the Engel word are concise in residually finite groups.
Given a group-word w and a group G, the verbal subgroup w(G) is the one generated by all w-values in G. The word w is called concise if w(G) is finite whenever the set of w-values in G is finite. It is an open question whether every word is concise in residually finite groups. Let w=w(x_1,..,x_k) be a multilinear commutator word, n a positive integer and q a prime power. In the present article we show that the word [w^q,_n y] is concise in residually finite groups while the word [w,_n y] is boundedly concise in residually finite groups.
We give an affrmative answer to the question whether a residually finite Engel group satisfying an identity is locally nilpotent. More generally, for a residually finite group G with an identity, we prove that the set of right Engel elements of G is contained in the Hirsch-Plotkin radical of G. Given an arbitrary word w, we also show that the class of all groups G in which the w-values are right n-Engel and w(G) is locally nilpotent is a variety.
Let m, n be positive integers, v a multilinear commutator word and w = v^m. We prove that if G is a residually finite group in which all w-values are n-Engel, then the verbal subgroup w(G) is locally nilpotent. We also examine the question whether this is true in the case where G is locally graded rather than residually finite. We answer the question affirmatively in the case where m = 1. Moreover, we show that if u is a non-commutator word and G is a locally graded group in which all u-values are n-Engel, then the verbal subgroup u(G) is locally nilpotent.
Following Plotkin we say that the automorphism $x$ of the group $G$ is a nil-automorphism if, for every $g\in G$, there exists $n=n(g)$ such that $[g,_n x]=1$. If the integer $n$ can be chosen independently of $g$, then $x$ is said to be unipotent. Nil and unipotent automorphisms can be regarded as a natural extension of the concept of Engel element, since a nil-automorphism $x$ is just a left-Engel element in $G < x >$. In this paper we consider nil-automorphisms of groups with residual properties namely locally-graded groups, residually-finite groups and profinite groups. The first result we…
Let $m,n$ be positive integers and $p$ a prime. We denote by $ν(G)$ an extension of the non-abelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ by $G \times G$. We prove that if $G$ is a residually finite group satisfying some non-trivial identity $f \equiv~1$ and for every $x,y \in G$ there exists a $p$-power $q=q(x,y)$ such that $[x,y^φ]^q = 1$, then the derived subgroup $ν(G)'$ is locally finite (Theorem A). Moreover, we show that if $G$ is a residually finite group in which for every $x,y \in G$ there exists a $p$-power $q=q(x,y)$ dividing $p^m$ such that $[x,y^φ]^q$ is left $n$-Engel, then the non-abelia…
Let m, n be positive integers, v a multilinear commutator word and w = v^m. Denote by v(G) and w(G) the verbal subgroups of a group G corresponding to v and w, respectively. We prove that the class of all groups G in which the w-values are n-Engel and w(G) is locally nilpotent is a variety (Theorem A). Further, we show that in the case where m is a prime-power the class of all groups G in which the w-values are n-Engel and v(G) has an ascending normal series whose quotients are either locally soluble or locally finite is a variety (Theorem B). We examine the question whether the latter result …
Given a finite group $G$, the Engel graph of $G$ is a directed graph encoding pairs of elements satisfying some Engel word. From the work of Detomi, Lucchini and Nemmi, the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of an arbitrary group $G$ is reduced to the understanding of the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of non-abelian simple groups. In this paper, we investigate the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of finite non-abelian simple groups.
We prove that every {finitely generated residually finite}-by-sofic group satisfies Kaplansky's direct and stable finiteness conjectures with respect to all noetherian rings. We use this result to provide countably many new examples of finitely presented non-LEA groups, for which soficity is still undecided, satisfying these two conjectures. Deligne's famous example of a non residually finite group is among our examples, along with the families of amalgamated free products SL_n(Z[1/p])*_{F_r}SL_n(Z[1/p]) and HNN extensions SL_n(Z[1/p])*_{F_r}, where p>2 is a prime, n>2 and F_r is a free group …
Let $A$ be a residually finite dimensional algebra (not necessarily associative) over a field $k$. Suppose first that $k$ is algebraically closed. We show that if $A$ satisfies a homogeneous almost identity $Q$, then $A$ has an ideal of finite codimension satisfying the identity $Q$. Using well known results of Zelmanov, we conclude that, if a residually finite dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over $k$ is almost $d$-Engel, then $L$ has a nilpotent (resp. locally nilpotent) ideal of finite codimension if char $k=0$ (resp. char $k > 0$). Next, suppose that $k$ is finite (so $A$ is residually finite).…
Let R be a prime ring of characteristic different from 2, U be the Utumi quotient ring of R and C be the extended centroid of R. Let F be a generalized skew derivation on R, I be a non-zero ideal of R. Then we give the complete structure of F satisfying certain conditions.
We show that there is a positive constant $δ< 1$ such that the probability of satisfying either the $2$-Engel identity $[X_1, X_2, X_2] = 1$ or the metabelian identity $[[X_1, X_2], [X_3, X_4]] = 1$ in a finite group is either $1$ or at most $δ$.
The notions of a box family and fibred cofinitely-coarse embedding are introduced. The countable, residually amenable groups satisfying the Haagerup property are then characterized as those possessing a box family that admits a fibred cofinitely-coarse embedding into a Hilbert space. This is a generalization of a result of X. Chen, Q. Wang and X. Wang on residually finite groups.
For a group G relatively hyperbolic to a family of residually finite groups satisfying the Farrell-Jones conjecture, we reduce the solution of the Farrell-Jones conjecture for G to the case of certain nice cyclic extensions in G.
Shumyatsky and the second author proved that if G is a finitely generated residually finite p-group satisfying a law, then, for almost all primes, the fact that a normal and commutator-closed set of generators satisfies a positive law implies that the whole of G also satisfies a (possibly different) positive law. In this paper, we construct a counterexample showing that the hypothesis of finite generation of the group G cannot be dispensed with.
We consider box spaces of finitely generated, residually finite groups $G$, and try to distinguish them up to coarse equivalence. We show that, for $n\geq 2$, the group $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ has a continuum of box spaces which are pairwise non-coarsely equivalent expanders. Moreover, varying the integer $n\geq 3$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ are pairwise inequivalent; similarly, varying the prime $p$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{p}])$ are pairwise inequivalent. A strong form of non-expansion for a box space is the existence of $α\in]0,1]$ such t…
