This paper introduces and applies a method for propagating changes in jet energy corrections into a D0 top quark mass measurement. It will serve as a source for the PRL presenting it's final results, and will be later published in a journal, or as a part of the author's PhD thesis. Motivation for the present measurement arises from the recalibration of the D0 flavor-dependent jet energy corrections. The recalibration was driven by the observation that the corrections for D0 Run IIb differ notably from those of Run IIa. The recalibration analysis was able to show that the Run IIb corrections should have resembled more those of Run IIa. The recalibrated jet energy corrections have an influence on the reconstructed top quarks through the jets that are produced in top quark decays. Hence, a change in the flavor-dependent jet energy corrections implies the need to revise the top mass measurement, performed by D0 in the lepton+jets channel. The D0 top mass average is almost completely determined by this measurement, and hence it has a direct impact on the top mass world average. A complete revision of the D0 top mass measurement is unlikely to occur, and hence this paper demonstrates the resulting top mass shift using a lighter methodology.
We review the possible effects of the miscalibration of the flavor-dependent Jet Energy Corrections ($F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$) on the DØ lepton+jets top mass measurement. The work is based on a previous study, where the DØ $F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$ calibration procedure was repeated based on the release of the internal DØ notes after a 5-year moratorium. The cited study was motivated by the extraordinary precision claimed by DØ in their top mass measurement. Using a Pythia6-based $F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$ recalibration, the $m_t$ result was shifted from 174.95 to 173.16 GeV. Moreover, utilizing a Herwig7-based…
Color-singlet gauge bosons with renormalizable couplings to quarks but not to leptons must interact with additional fermions ("anomalons") required to cancel the gauge anomalies. Analyzing the decays of such leptophobic bosons into anomalons, I show that they produce final states involving leptons at the LHC. Resonant production of a flavor-universal leptophobic $Z'$ boson leads to cascade decays via anomalons, whose signatures include a leptonically decaying $Z$, missing energy and several jets. A $Z'$ boson that couples to the right-handed quarks of the first and second generations undergoes…
The ATLAS Collaboration has reported the first results of the search for SUSY particles in 1-lepton + 3 jets + MET final states. An essential ingredient for these results is a reliable background estimation in the signal region, in particular of the ttbar, W+jets and QCD backgrounds. The estimation of these three backgrounds is explained in this paper. The ttbar and W+jets backgrounds are obtained from a background dominated control region and extrapolated to the signal region, whereas for the estimation of the QCD background a matrix method is used.
The Higgs boson may decay predominantly into a hidden sector, producing lepton jets instead of the standard Higgs signatures. We propose a search strategy for such a signal at hadron colliders. A promising channel is the associated production of the Higgs with a Z or W, where the dominant background is Z or W plus QCD jets. The lepton jets can be discriminated from QCD jets by cutting on the electromagnetic fraction and charge ratio. The former is the fraction of jet energy deposited in the electromagnetic calorimeter and the latter is the ratio of energy carried by charged particles to the el…
The production of top-quark pairs that subsequently decay hadronically and leptonically (lepton+jets channel) is one of the key processes for the study of top-quark properties at the LHC. In this article, NLO QCD corrections of order $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_{\rm s}^3α^{4}\right)}$ to the hadronic process ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to μ^-\barν_μ{\rm b}\bar{\rm b} {\rm j} {\rm j}$ are presented. The computation includes off-shell as well as non-resonant contributions, and experimental event selections are used in order to provide realistic predictions. The results are provided in the form of cross sections an…
The Higgs and some of the Standard Model superpartners may have been copiously produced at LEP and the Tevatron without being detected. We study a novel scenario of this type in which the Higgs decays predominantly into a light hidden sector either directly or through light SUSY states. Subsequent cascades increase the multiplicity of hidden sector particles which, after decaying back into the Standard Model, appear in the detector as clusters of collimated leptons known as lepton jets. We identify the relevant collider observables that characterize this scenario, and study a wide range of LEP…
Searches for new physics in high-multiplicity events with little or no missing energy are an important component of the LHC program, complementary to analyses that rely on missing energy. We consider the potential reach of searches for events with a lepton and six or more jets, and show they can provide increased sensitivity to many supersymmetric and exotic models that would not be detected through standard missing-energy analyses. Among these are supersymmetric models with gauge mediation, R-parity violation, and light hidden sectors. Moreover, ATLAS and CMS measurements suggest the primary …
We consider some of the recent proposals in which weak-scale dark matter is accompanied by a GeV scale dark sector that could produce spectacular lepton-rich events at the LHC. Since much of the collider phenomenology is only weakly model dependent it is possible to arrive at generic predictions for the discovery potential of future experimental searches. We concentrate on the production of dark states through $Z^0$ bosons and electroweak-inos at the Tevatron or LHC, which are the cleanest channels for probing the dark sector. We properly take into account the effects of dark radiation and dar…
The higgsino Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP) scenario opens up the possibility of decays of strongly produced particles to an intermediate neutralino, due to the Yukawa-suppressed direct decays to the higgsino. Those decays produce multijet signals with a Higgs or a $Z$ boson being produced in the decay of the intermediate neutralino to the LSP. In this paper we study the discovery prospects of squarks that produce $b$-jets and leptons in the final state. Our collider analysis provides signal significances at the 3$σ$ level for luminosities of 1 ab$^{-1}$, and at the 5$σ$ level if we pr…
We compute the next-to-leading order corrections of $O(α_s^2α^3)$ to the hadronic production of two oppositely charged leptons and two hard jets, $p p \to j j l^- l^+$, using Recola and Collier. We include electroweak and QCD corrections at the given order and all off-shell effects. We provide detailed predictions for the LHC operating at 13 TeV and obtain per-cent-level corrections for the total cross section. For differential distributions we find significant non-uniform distortions in high-energy tails at the level of several ten per cent due to electroweak Sudakov logarithms and deformatio…
This Letter proposes a new search for confining dark sectors at the Large Hadron Collider. As a result of the strong dynamics in the hidden sector, dark matter could manifest in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider in form of hadronic jets containing stable invisible bound states. These semi-visible jets have been studied theoretically and experimentally in the fully hadronic signature where the unstable composite dark matter can only decay promptly back to Standard Model quarks. We present a simplified model based on two messenger fields separated by a large mass gap allowing…
The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics and, therefore, it is expected to have large couplings to hypothetical new physics in many models beyond the SM (BSM). Various studies have predicted the presence of multi-lepton anomalies at the LHC. One of those anomalies is the excess production of two same-sign leptons and three isolated leptons in association with $b$-jets. These are reasonably well described by a 2HDM+$S$ model, where $S$ is a singlet scalar. Both the ATLAS and CMS experiments have reported sustained excesses in these f…
Collider signals of dark photons are an exciting probe for new gauge forces and are characterized by events with boosted lepton jets. Existing techniques are efficient in searching for muonic lepton jets but due to substantial backgrounds have difficulty constraining lepton jets containing only electrons. This is unfortunate since upcoming intensity frontier experiments are sensitive to dark photon masses which only allow electron decays. Analyzing a recently proposed model of kinetic mixing, with new scalar particles decaying into dark photons, we find that existing techniques for electron je…
We suggest a new class of tests for searching for lepton flavor non-universality (LFNU) using ratio observables and based on correlations among the underlying LFNU new physics (NP) effects in several (seemingly independent) di-lepton and single lepton + jet(s) processes. This is demonstrated by studying the effects generated by LFNU 4-Fermi interactions involving 3rd generation quarks. We find that the sensitivity to the scale ($Λ$) of the LFNU 4-Fermi operators significantly improves when the correlations among the various di-lepton +jets and single-lepton + jets processes are used, reaching …
The type-III see-saw model holding out a riveting rationale for the minuscule neutrino masses caters for a well-to-do phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Several searches targetting the triplet fermions have been performed at the LHC. Not only are the signals for the leptonic final states considered in these searches suppressed by the branching fractions of the Standard Model (SM) bosons, but they are also beset with considerably large SM backgrounds. Thus, these searches are deemed not to be sensitive enough in probing the triplet fermions much heavier than 1 TeV. To this end, w…
n this letter we investigate the various processes that can contribute to a final state consisting of a lepton, missing transverse momentum and two jets at Next to Leading Order (NLO) at the Tevatron. In particular we consider the production of W/Z + 2 jets, diboson pairs, single top and the tt process with both fully leptonic and semi-leptonic decays. We present distributions for the invariant mass of the dijet system and normalisations of the various processes, accurate to NLO.
Recent ATLAS data significantly extend the exclusion limits for supersymmetric particles. We examine the impact of such data on global fits of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) to indirect and cosmological data. We calculate the likelihood map of the ATLAS search, taking into account systematic errors on the signal and on the background. We validate our calculation against the ATLAS determinaton of 95% confidence level exclusion contours. A previous CMSSM global fit is then re-weighted by the likelihood map, which takes a bite at the high probability density region …
Several models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict neutral particles that decay into final states consisting of collimated jets of light leptons and hadrons (so-called "lepton jets"). These particles can also be long-lived with decay length comparable to, or even larger than, the LHC detectors' linear dimensions. This paper presents the results of a search for lepton jets in proton--proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in a sample of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected during 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Limits on models predicting Higgs boson decays t…
A search is presented for a new, light boson with a mass of about 1 GeV and decaying promptly to jets of collimated electrons and/or muons (lepton-jets). The analysis is performed with 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Events are required to contain at least two lepton-jets. This study finds no statistically significant deviation from predictions of the Standard Model and places 95\% confidence-level upper limits on the contribution of new phenomena beyond the SM, incuding SUSY-p…
We present a search for a light (mass < 2 GeV) boson predicted by Hidden Valley supersymmetric models that decays into a final state consisting of collimated muons or electrons, denoted "lepton-jets". The analysis uses 5fb-1 of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV proton--proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider to search for the following signatures: single lepton-jets with at least four muons; pairs of lepton-jets, each with two or more muons; and pairs of lepton-jets with two or more electrons. This study finds no statistically significant deviation from the Standard Mod…
The presence of R-parity ($\mathcal{R}_p$) violation offers intersting decay channels for the gluinos. In this work we present a new search strategy for the gluinos in the presence of semileptonic $\mathcal{R}_p$ violating couplings $λ^{'}_{133}$ and $λ^{'}_{233}$. We consider two scenarios (i) $λ^{'}$ induced 3-body decay of gluinos to a top quark ($t$), a bottom quark ($b$) and a light lepton ($\ell$) (ii) cascade decay of gluinos to top quarks and neutralinos ($\widetildeχ_1^0$) followed by the decay of $\widetildeχ_1^0$ to $t$, $b$ and $\ell$ through $λ^{'}$ couplings. We present two diffe…
A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector. Events are selected in the lepton+jets topology by requiring a single lepton (electron or muon), large missing transverse energy and at least three jets. No explicit identification of secondary vertices inside jets (b-tagging) is performed. A simple multivariate method using three kinematic variables is employed to extract the cross-section measurement.
Sterile neutrinos, if they exist, are potential harbingers for physics beyond the Standard Model. They have the capacity to shed light on our flavor sector, grand unification frameworks, dark matter sector and origins of baryon anti-baryon asymmetry. There have been a few seminal studies that have broached the subject of sterile neutrinos with low, electroweak-scale masses (i.e. $Λ_{\text{\tiny{QCD}}} \ll m_{N_R} \ll m_{W^\pm}$) and investigated their reach at hadron colliders using lepton jets. These preliminary studies nevertheless assume background-free scenarios after certain selection cri…
We present a study of top quark polarization in $t \overline{t}$ events produced in $p \overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. Data correspond to 9.7 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector at the Tevatron. We use final states containing a lepton and at least three jets. The polarization is measured using the distribution of leptons along the beam and helicity axes, and the axis normal to the production plane. This is the first measurement of top quark polarization at the Tevatron in $\ell$+jets final states, and first measurement of transverse polarization in $t \overline{t}$ produc…
We present next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative-QCD calculations of the cross sections for $\ell N\to h X$ and $\ell N\to \mathrm{jet}\, X$. The main feature of these processes is that the scattered lepton is not observed, so that the hard scale that makes them perturbative is set by the transverse momentum of the hadron or jet. Kinematically, the two processes thus become direct analogs of single-inclusive production in hadronic collisions which, as has been pointed out in the literature, makes them promising tools for exploring transverse spin phenomena in QCD when the incident nucleon i…
A variety of models of physics beyond the standard model predict new particles that decay to leptons, jets, or both together. These models include axigluons, colorons, diquarks, excited quarks, heavy long-lived charged particles, leptoquarks, Randall-Sundrum gravitons, string resonances, and new vector bosons (right-handed W and Z'). Using the data collected in 2011 and 2012 at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the CMS collaboration has performed searches for these new particles in channels with leptons and jets. The results of these searches will be presented. No evidence of new physics…
This letter reports a measurement of the top quark mass, M_{top}, in data from p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV corresponding to 2.7 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity at the Fermilab Tevatron using the CDF II detector. Events with the lepton+jets topology are selected. An unbinned likelihood is constructed based on the dependence of the lepton transverse momentum, P_T, on M_{top}. A maximum likelihood fit to the data yields a measured mass M_{top} = (176.9 +/- 8.0 stat +/- 2.7 syst) GeV/c^2. In this measurement, the contribution by the jet energy scale uncertainty to the systematic error…
We measure the mass of the top quark using top quark pair candidate events in the lepton+jets channel from data corresponding to 1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We use a likelihood technique that reduces the jet energy scale uncertainty by combining an in-situ jet energy calibration with the independent constraint on the jet energy scale (JES) from the calibration derived using photon+jets and dijet samples. We find the mass of the top quark to be 171.5+-1.8(stat.+JES)+-1.1(syst.) GeV.
A search for strongly produced supersymmetric particles is conducted using signatures involving multiple energetic jets and either two isolated leptons ($e$ or $μ$) with the same electric charge, or at least three isolated leptons. The search also utilises jets originating from b-quarks, missing transverse momentum and other observables to extend its sensitivity. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. No deviation from t…
The top quark mass has been measured using the template method in the top antitop -> lepton + jets channel based on data recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04/fb. The analyses in the electron + jets and muon + jets decay channels yield consistent results. The top quark mass is measured to be m_top = 174.5 +/- 0.6_stat +/- 2.3_syst GeV.
A top quark mass measurement is performed using 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ of LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The measurement uses the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ all-jets final state. A kinematic fit is performed to reconstruct the decay of the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ system and suppress the multijet background. Using the ideogram method, the top quark mass ($m_\mathrm{t}$) is determined, simultaneously constraining an additional jet energy scale factor (JSF). The resulting value of $m_\mathrm{t}$ = 172.34 $\pm$ 0.20 (stat+JSF) $\pm$ 0.70 (syst) GeV …
We report a measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair production with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. The data are unfolded using a fully Bayesian unfolding method. Differential measurements of the charge asymmetry are performed.
We present a new measurement of the mass of the top quark using lepton + jets ttbar events collected by the DO experiment in Run I of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The mass is extracted through a comparison of each event with a leading-order matrix element that depends on the top quark mass. The result is M_t=180.1 +/- 3.6 (stat) +/- 3.9 (sys) GeV/c^2. Combining this improved measurement with our previous value from dilepton channels yields the new DO result M_t=179.0 +/- 3.5 (stat) +/- 3.8 (sys) GeV/c^2.
A search has been performed for scalar top quark pair production in the lepton+jets channel in ~1 fb^(-1) of data. Kinematic differences between the exotic stop-stopbar and the dominant ttbar process are used to separate the two possible contributions. For scalar top quark masses of 145-175 GeV and chargino masses of 105-135 GeV we obtain upper cross section limits at 95% confidence level for stop-stopbar production that are a factor of ~7-12 higher than expected for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM).
We have searched for production of t-tbar pairs in p-pbar interactions at 1.8 TeV center-of-mass energy at the FNAL Tevatron collider. The search assumes standard model decay for top quark into W + b quark. We observe in e+jet and mu+jet final states a small, not statistically significant, excess above the background estimated by two different methods. The results presented are preliminary.
We present a measurement of the top pair production cross section in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV. We collect a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 194$\pm$11 pb$^{-1}$ with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use an artificial neural network technique to discriminate between top pair production and background processes in a sample of 519 lepton+jets events, which have one isolated energetic charged lepton, large missing transverse energy and at least three energetic jets. We measure the top pair production cross section to be $σ_{t\bar{t}}= 6.6$$\pm 1.1 \…
We present a measurement of the forward--backward asymmetry in top quark-antiquark production using the full Tevatron Run II dataset collected by the D0 experiment at Fermilab. The measurement is performed in lepton+jets final states using a new kinematic fitting algorithm for events with four or more jets and a new partial reconstruction algorithm for events with only three jets. Corrected for detector acceptance and resolution effects, the asymmetry is evaluated to be 10.6+-3.0 %. Results are consistent with the standard model predictions which range from 5.0% to 8.8%. We also present the de…
We present a measurement of top quark polarization in $t\bar{t}$ pair production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV using data corresponding to 9.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider final states containing a lepton and at least three jets. The polarization is measured through the distribution of lepton angles along three axes: the beam axis, the helicity axis, and the transverse axis normal to the $t\bar{t}$ production plane. This is the first measurement of top quark polarization at Tevatron using lepto…
Various measurements of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets decay channel of top quark pair production are presented. The measurements are performed on data samples of up to 2.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity acquired by the CDF and D0 experiments in Run-II of the Tevatron proton-anti-proton collider at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The new Tevatron combination using up to 2.8 fb-1 of data results in a preliminary world average mass of the top quark of m_top = 172.4 +- 1.2 GeV. This corresponds to a relative precision of 0.7%.
A search for physics beyond the Standard Model, in final states with at least one high transverse momentum charged lepton (electron or muon) and two additional high transverse momentum leptons or jets, is performed using 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The upper end of the distribution of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of leptons and jets is sensitive to the production of high-mass objects. No excess of events beyond Standard Model predictions is observed. Exclusion limits are set…
We examine properties of ttbar candidates events in lepton+jets final states to establish the helicities of the W bosons in t->W+b decays. Our analysis is based on a direct calculation of a probability that each event corresponds to a ttbar final state, as a function of the helicity of the W boson. We use the 125 events/pb sample of data collected by the DO experiment during Run I of the Fermilab Tevatron collider at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, and obtain a longitudinal helicity fraction of F_0=0.56+/-0.31, which is consistent with the prediction of F_0=0.70 from the standard model.
We present a search for WW and WZ production in final states that contain a charged lepton (electron or muon) and at least two jets, produced in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, using data corresponding to 1.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector. Diboson production in this decay channel has yet to be observed at hadron colliders due to the large single W plus jets background. An artificial neural network has been developed to increase signal sensitivity, as compared with an event selection based on conventional cuts. We set a 95% confid…
A search for physics beyond the standard model is performed with events having one or more hadronically decaying tau leptons, highly energetic jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.98 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2011. The number of observed events is consistent with predictions for standard model processes. Lower limits on the mass of the gluino in supersymmetric models are determined.
We present the first search for pair production of isolated jets of charged leptons in association with a large imbalance in transverse energy in ppbar collisions using 5.8 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. No excess is observed above Standard Model background, and the result is used to set upper limits on the production cross section of pairs of supersymmetric chargino and neutralino particles as a function of "dark-photon" mass, where the dark photon is produced in the decay of the lightest supersymmetric particle.
A search for pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark is performed in the lepton+jets channel using 0.9 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment. Kinematic differences between scalar top quark pair production and the dominant top quark pair production background are used to separate the two processes. First limits from Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider for the scalar top quark decaying to a chargino and a b quark are obtained for scalar top quark masses of 130-190 GeV and chargino masses of 90-150 GeV.
We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9fb^-1 of ppbar collisions collected at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at Fermilab's Tevatron. This is the first measurement of the top quark mass using top-antitop pair candidate events in the lepton + jets and dilepton decay channels simultaneously. We reconstruct two observables in each channel and use a non-parametric kernel density estimation technique to derive two-dimensional probability density functions from simulated signal and background samples. The observables…
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2012. The analysis focuses on searches for a kinematic edge in the invariant mass distribution of the opposite-sign same-flavor lepton pair and for final states with an on-shell Z boson. The observations are consistent with expectations from standard model pro…
We measure the mass of the top quark in lepton+jets final states using the full sample of $p\bar{p}$ collision data collected by the D0 experiment in Run~II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at $\sqrt s=1.96~$TeV, corresponding to $9.7~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use a matrix element technique that calculates the probabilities for each event to result from $t\bar t$ production or background. The overall jet energy scale is constrained in situ by the mass of the $W$ boson. We measure $m_t=174.98\pm0.76~{\rm GeV}$. This constitutes the most precise single measurement of the top-q…
The top quark mass is measured using a template method in the $t\bar{t}\to$ lepton+jets channel (lepton is $e$ or $μ$) using ATLAS data recorded in 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$. The $t\bar{t}\to$ lepton+jets channel is characterized by the presence of a charged lepton, a neutrino and four jets, two of which originate from bottom quarks ($b$). Exploiting a three-dimensional template technique, the top quark mass is determined together with a global jet energy scale f…
Several models of particle physics different from the Standard Model predict the existence of a dark sector that is weakly coupled to the visible one: the two sectors may couple via the vector portal, where a dark photon with mass in the MeV to GeV range mixes kinetically with the SM photon. If the dark photon is the lightest state in the dark sector, it will decay to SM particles, mainly to leptons and possibly light mesons. Due to its weak interactions with the SM, it can have a non-negligible lifetime. At the LHC, these dark photons would typically be produced with large boost resulting in …
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. Both search modes use several event categories in order to increase the sensitivity to new physics. These cate…
We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of leptons from decays of top quarks and antiquarks produced in proton-antiproton collisions. We consider the final state containing a lepton and at least three jets. The entire sample of data collected by the D0 experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to 9.7 inverse fb of integrated luminosity, is used. The asymmetry measured for reconstructed leptons is $A_{FB}^l = \big(2.9 \pm 2.1(stat.) ^{+1.5}_{-1.7}(syst.) \big)$%. When corrected for efficiency and resolution effects wi…
Identifying the leptons inside jets is critical for the measurements of Higgs boson and the flavor physics program at the CEPC, a proposed Higgs/Z factory with the main ring circumference of 100 km. Using the CEPC baseline software, we analyze the identification performance of leptons generated inside a jet. The jet leptons are identified with typical efficiency and mis-identification rate of 98% and 1% for energy higher than 2 GeV, with the $Z\to bb$ process at 91.2 GeV center-of mass energy. At the benchmark channel of the CEPC flavor program of $B_{c}\to τν$ with $τ\to eνν$, the electrons a…
The production of events with multiple high transverse momentum particles including charged leptons and jets is measured, using 1.04 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector during the first half of 2011 at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. No excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed, and upper limits on the fiducial cross sections for non-Standard Model production of these final states are set. Using models for string ball and black hole production and decay, exclusion contours are determined as a function of mass threshold and the fundamental gravity scale.
The top quark mass was measured in the channels $t\bar{t} \to \mathrm{lepton+jets}$ and $t\bar{t} \to \mathrm{dilepton}$ (lepton=$e, μ$) based on ATLAS data recorded in 2011. The data were taken at the LHC with a proton--proton centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb$^{-1}$. The $t\bar{t} \to \mathrm{lepton+jets}$ analysis uses a three-dimensional template technique which determines the top quark mass together with a global jet energy scale factor (JSF), and a relative $b$-to-light-jet energy scale factor (bJSF), where the terms $b$-jets an…
We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section using events with one charged lepton and jets from ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. In these events, heavy flavor quarks from top quark decay are identified with a secondary vertex tagging algorithm. From 162 pb-1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, a total of 48 candidate events are selected, where 13.5 +- 1.8 events are expected from background contributions. We measure a ttbar production cross section of 5.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1} (stat.) ^{+0.9}_{0.6} (syst.) pb.
Results are presented from a search for events containing an excited lepton (electron or muon) produced in association with an ordinary lepton of the same flavor and decaying to a lepton and two hadronic jets. Both the production and the decay of the excited leptons are assumed to occur via a contact interaction with a characteristic energy scale $Λ$. The branching fraction for the decay mode under study increases with the mass of the excited lepton and is the most sensitive channel for very heavy excited leptons. The analysis uses a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS expe…
