We study the linear span of commutators of free random variables and show that these are the only quadratic forms which satisfy the following equivalent properties:
* preservation free infinite divisibility
* free and strong cancellation of odd cumulants
* symmetric distribution for any free family.
The main combinatorial tool is an involution on non-crossing partitions.
In a pure C*-algebra (i.e., one having suitable regularity properties in its Cuntz semigroup), any element on which all bounded traces vanish is a sum of 7 commutators.
We show that elements of unital $C^*$-algebras without tracial states are finite sums of commutators. Moreover, the number of commutators involved is bounded, depending only on the given $C^*$-algebra.
The problem of expressing a selfadjoint element that is zero on every bounded trace as a finite sum (or a limit of sums) of commutators is investigated in the setting of C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension. Upper bounds -- in terms of the nuclear dimension of the C*-algebra -- are given for the number of commutators needed in these sums. An example is given of a simple, nuclear C*-algebra (of infinite nuclear dimension) with a unique tracial state and with elements that vanish on all bounded traces and yet are "badly" approximated by finite sums of commutators. Finally, the same problem is…
Let M be a factor of type II_\infty or II_1 having separable predual and let M-bar be the algebra of affiliated τ-measureable operators. We characterize the commutator space [I,J] for sub-(M,M)-bimodules I and J of M-bar.
The aim of this paper is to show that various known characterizations of traces on classical pseudodifferentials operators (PsiDOs) can actually be obtained by very elementary considerations on PsiDOs, using only basic properties of these operators. Thereby, we give a unified treatment of the determinations of the space of traces (i) on PsiDOs of noninteger orders or of regular parity-class, (ii) on integer order PsiDOs, (iii) on nonpositive order PsiDOs in dimension greather than or equal to 2, and (iv) on nonpositive order PsiDOs in dimension 1.
This paper describes the expected characteristic polynomial of the commutator of randomly rotated matrices, in the context of the finite free probability theory initiated by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. The key technical features are the use of Weingarten calculus to translate the random matrix problem into one of combinatorial representation theory, followed by some applications of the Goulden-Jackson immanant formula and the classical theory of permutation modules.
We show that Connes' embedding conjecture on von Neumann algebras is equivalent to the existence of certain algebraic certificates for a polynomial in noncommuting variables to satisfy the following nonnegativity condition: The trace is nonnegative whenever self-adjoint contraction matrices of the same size are substituted for the variables. These algebraic certificates involve sums of hermitian squares and commutators. We prove that they always exist for a similar nonnegativity condition where elements of separable II_1-factors are considered instead of matrices. Under the presence of Connes'…
In this paper, we will consider the generating operator of the free group factor L(F_2). Then we can construct the group von Neumann algebra L(K), where K is the commutator group of F_2 and the conditional expectation E. Then (L(F_2), E) is the W*-probability space with amalgamation over L(K). In this paper, we will compute the trivial operator-valued moment series of the generating operator of L(F_2) over L(K). This computation is the good example for studying the operator-valued distribution, since the operator-valued moment series of operator-valued random variables contain algebraic and co…
Let A be a unital $C^*$-algebra, given together with a specified state $ϕ:A \to C$. Consider two selfadjoint elements a,b of A, which are free with respect to $ϕ$ (in the sense of the free probability theory of Voiculescu). Let us denote $c:=i(ab-ba)$, where the i in front of the commutator is introduced to make c selfadjoint. In this paper we show how the spectral distribution of c can be calculated from the spectral distributions of a and b. Some properties of the corresponding operation on probability measures are also discussed. The methods we use are combinatorial, based on the descriptio…
Working with a rather general notion of independence, we provide a transference method which allows to compare the p-norm of sums of independent copies with the p-norm of sums of free copies. Our main technique is to construct explicit operator space Lp embeddings preserving independence to reduce the problem to L1, where some recent results by the first-named author can be used. We find applications for noncommutative Khincthine/Rosenthal type inequalities and for noncommutative Lp embedding theory.
In this paper we determine the distributional behavior of sums of free (in the sense of Voiculescu) identically distributed, infinitesimal random variables. The theory is shown to parallel the classical theory of independent random variables, though the limit laws are usually quite different. Our work subsumes all previously known instances of weak convergence of sums of free, identically distributed random variables. In particular, we determine the domains of attraction of stable distributions in the free theory. These freely stable distributions are studied in detail in the appendix, where t…
In this paper, we establish an extension of a noncommutative Bennett inequality with a parameter $1\leq r\leq2$ and use it together with some noncommutative techniques to establish a Rosenthal inequality. We also present a noncommutative Hoeffding inequality as follows: Let $(\mathfrak{M}, τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space, $\mathfrak{N}$ be a von Neumann subalgebra of $\mathfrak{M}$ with the corresponding conditional expectation $\mathcal{E}_{\mathfrak{N}}$ and let subalgebras $\mathfrak{N}\subseteq\mathfrak{A}_j\subseteq\mathfrak{M}\,\,(j=1, \cdots, n)$ be successively independent ov…
Based on a new analytical approach to the definition of additive free convolution on probability measures on the real line we prove free analogs of limit theorems for sums for non-identically distributed random variables in classical Probability Theory.
We extend, in the free probability framework, an invariance principle for multilinear homogeneous sums with low influences recently established in [E. Mossel, R. O'Donnell and K. Oleszkiewicz (2010). Noise stability of functions with low influences: invariance and optimality. {\it Ann. Math.} {\bf 171}, no. 1, 295-341]. To do so, a hypercontractivity property for those homogeneous sums is necessary, and to prove it has turned out to be our main task. Finally, we deduce from our extension several universality phenomenons, in the spirit of the paper [I. Nourdin, G. Peccati and G. Reinert (2010).…
We use free probability techniques to compute borders of spectra of non hermitian operators in finite von Neumann algebras which arise as `free sums' of `simple' operators. To this end, the resolvent is analyzed with the aid of the Haagerup inequality. Concrete examples coming from reduced C*-algebras of free product groups and leading to systems of polynomial equations illustrate the approach.
