Polyphonic sound event detection and direction-of-arrival estimation require different input features from audio signals. While sound event detection mainly relies on time-frequency patterns, direction-of-arrival estimation relies on magnitude or phase differences between microphones. Previous approaches use the same input features for sound event detection and direction-of-arrival estimation, and train the two tasks jointly or in a two-stage transfer-learning manner. We propose a two-step approach that decouples the learning of the sound event detection and directional-of-arrival estimation systems. In the first step, we detect the sound events and estimate the directions-of-arrival separately to optimize the performance of each system. In the second step, we train a deep neural network to match the two output sequences of the event detector and the direction-of-arrival estimator. This modular and hierarchical approach allows the flexibility in the system design, and increase the performance of the whole sound event localization and detection system. The experimental results using the DCASE 2019 sound event localization and detection dataset show an improved performance compared to the previous state-of-the-art solutions.
This paper introduces a novel dataset for polyphonic sound event detection in urban sound monitoring use-cases. Based on isolated sounds taken from the FSD50k dataset, 20,000 polyphonic soundscapes are synthesized with sounds being randomly positioned in the stereo panorama using different loudness levels. The paper gives a detailed discussion of possible application scenarios, explains the dataset generation process in detail, and discusses current limitations of the proposed USM-SED dataset.

Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC) and Sound Event Detection (SED) are two separate tasks in the field of computational sound scene analysis. In this work, we present a new dataset with both sound scene and sound event labels and use this to demonstrate a novel method for jointly classifying sound scenes and recognizing sound events. We show that by taking a joint approach, learning is more efficient and whilst improvements are still needed for sound event detection, SED results are robust in a dataset where the sample distribution is skewed towards sound scenes.
Polyphonic Sound Event Detection (SED) in real-world recordings is a challenging task because of the dynamic polyphony level, intensity, and duration of sound events. Current polyphonic SED systems fail to model the temporal structure of sound events explicitly and instead attempt to look at which sound events are present at each audio frame. Consequently, the event-wise detection performance is much lower than the segment-wise detection performance. In this work, we propose a joint model approach to improve the temporal localization of sound events using a multi-task learning setup. The first…
The Sørensen--Dice Coefficient has recently seen rising popularity as a loss function (also known as Dice loss) due to its robustness in tasks where the number of negative samples significantly exceeds that of positive samples, such as semantic segmentation, natural language processing, and sound event detection. Conventional training of polyphonic sound event detection systems with binary cross-entropy loss often results in suboptimal detection performance as the training is often overwhelmed by updates from negative samples. In this paper, we investigated the effect of the Dice loss, intra- …

Polyphonic sound event detection (polyphonic SED) is an interesting but challenging task due to the concurrence of multiple sound events. Recently, SED methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN) have shown promising performance. Generally, CNN are designed for local feature extraction while RNN are used to model the temporal dependency among these local features. Despite their success, it is still insufficient for existing deep learning techniques to separate individual sound event from their mixture, largely due to the overlapping characteristic o…
Artificial sound event detection (SED) has the aim to mimic the human ability to perceive and understand what is happening in the surroundings. Nowadays, Deep Learning offers valuable techniques for this goal such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The Capsule Neural Network (CapsNet) architecture has been recently introduced in the image processing field with the intent to overcome some of the known limitations of CNNs, specifically regarding the scarce robustness to affine transformations (i.e., perspective, size, orientation) and the detection of overlapped images. This motivated the …
Polyphonic sound event localization and detection is not only detecting what sound events are happening but localizing corresponding sound sources. This series of tasks was first introduced in DCASE 2019 Task 3. In 2020, the sound event localization and detection task introduces additional challenges in moving sound sources and overlapping-event cases, which include two events of the same type with two different direction-of-arrival (DoA) angles. In this paper, a novel event-independent network for polyphonic sound event localization and detection is proposed. Unlike the two-stage method we pr…

Sound event detection (SED) and localization refer to recognizing sound events and estimating their spatial and temporal locations. Using neural networks has become the prevailing method for SED. In the area of sound localization, which is usually performed by estimating the direction of arrival (DOA), learning-based methods have recently been developed. In this paper, it is experimentally shown that the trained SED model is able to contribute to the direction of arrival estimation (DOAE). However, joint training of SED and DOAE degrades the performance of both. Based on these results, a two-s…

This paper describes that semi-supervised learning called peer collaborative learning (PCL) can be applied to the polyphonic sound event detection (PSED) task, which is one of the tasks in the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) challenge. Many deep learning models have been studied to find out what kind of sound events occur where and for how long in a given audio clip. The characteristic of PCL used in this paper is the combination of ensemble-based knowledge distillation into sub-networks and student-teacher model-based knowledge distillation, which can train …
This paper introduces SINGA:PURA, a strongly labelled polyphonic urban sound dataset with spatiotemporal context. The data were collected via several recording units deployed across Singapore as a part of a wireless acoustic sensor network. These recordings were made as part of a project to identify and mitigate noise sources in Singapore, but also possess a wider applicability to sound event detection, classification, and localization. This paper introduces an accompanying hierarchical label taxonomy, which has been designed to be compatible with other existing datasets for urban sound taggin…
We present a new framework SoundDet, which is an end-to-end trainable and light-weight framework, for polyphonic moving sound event detection and localization. Prior methods typically approach this problem by preprocessing raw waveform into time-frequency representations, which is more amenable to process with well-established image processing pipelines. Prior methods also detect in segment-wise manner, leading to incomplete and partial detections. SoundDet takes a novel approach and directly consumes the raw, multichannel waveform and treats the spatio-temporal sound event as a complete "soun…

We study the SELD task from a multi-task learning perspective. Two open problems are addressed in this paper. Firstly, to detect overlapping sound events of the same type but with different DoAs, we propose to use a trackwise output format and solve the accompanying track permutation problem with permutation-invariant training. This report proposes a polyphonic sound event detection (SED) method for the DCASE 2020 Challenge Task 4. The proposed SED method is based on semi-supervised learning to deal with the different combination of training datasets such as weakly labeled dataset, unlabeled dataset, and strongly labeled synthetic dataset. Especially, the target label of each audio clip from weakly labeled or unlabeled dataset is first predicted by using the mean teacher model that is the DCASE 2020 baseline. The data with predicted labels are used for training the proposed SED model, which consists of CNNs with skip…
Sound event localization and detection consists of two subtasks which are sound event detection and direction-of-arrival estimation. While sound event detection mainly relies on time-frequency patterns to distinguish different sound classes, direction-of-arrival estimation uses magnitude or phase differences between microphones to estimate source directions. Therefore, it is often difficult to jointly train these two subtasks simultaneously. We propose a novel feature called spatial cue-augmented log-spectrogram (SALSA) with exact time-frequency mapping between the signal power and the source …
One hour before sunrise, one can experience the dawn chorus where birds from different species sing together. In this scenario, high levels of polyphony, as in the number of overlapping sound sources, are prone to happen resulting in a complex acoustic outcome. Sound Event Detection (SED) tasks analyze acoustic scenarios in order to identify the occurring events and their respective temporal information. However, highly dense scenarios can be hard to process and have not been studied in depth. Here we show, using a Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN), how birdsong polyphonic scenario…

Deep generative models for audio synthesis have recently been significantly improved. However, the task of modeling raw-waveforms remains a difficult problem, especially for audio waveforms and music signals. Recently, the realtime audio variational autoencoder (RAVE) method was developed for high-quality audio waveform synthesis. The RAVE method is based on the variational autoencoder and utilizes the two-stage training strategy. Unfortunately, the RAVE model is limited in reproducing wide-pitch polyphonic music sound. Therefore, to enhance the reconstruction performance, we adopt the pitch a…

The challenges of polyphonic sound event detection (PSED) stem from the detection of multiple overlapping events in a time series. Recent efforts exploit Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) on Time-Frequency Representations (TFRs) of audio clips as model inputs to mitigate such issues. However, existing solutions often rely on a single type of TFR, which causes under-utilization of input features. To this end, we propose a novel PSED framework, which incorporates Multi-Type-Multi-Scale TFRs. Our key insight is that: TFRs, which are of different types or in different scales, can reveal acoustics patter…
This work defines a new framework for performance evaluation of polyphonic sound event detection (SED) systems, which overcomes the limitations of the conventional collar-based event decisions, event F-scores and event error rates. The proposed framework introduces a definition of event detection that is more robust against labelling subjectivity. It also resorts to polyphonic receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to deliver more global insight into system performance than F1-scores, and proposes a reduction of these curves into a single polyphonic sound detection score (PSDS), which …

General MIL approaches include two kinds: the instance-level approaches and embedding-level approaches. We present a method of generating instance-level probabilities for the embedding level approaches which tend to perform better than the instance-level approaches in terms o…
Sound event detection (SED) aims at identifying audio events (audio tagging task) in recordings and then locating them temporally (localization task). This last task ends with the segmentation of the frame-level class predictions, that determines the onsets and offsets of the audio events. Yet, this step is often overlooked in scientific publications. In this paper, we focus on the post-processing algorithms used to identify the audio event boundaries. Different post-processing steps are investigated, through smoothing, thresholding, and optimization. In particular, we evaluate different appro…
Sound event detection systems typically consist of two stages: extracting hand-crafted features from the raw audio waveform, and learning a mapping between these features and the target sound events using a classifier. Recently, the focus of sound event detection research has been mostly shifted to the latter stage using standard features such as mel spectrogram as the input for classifiers such as deep neural networks. In this work, we utilize end-to-end approach and propose to combine these two stages in a single deep neural network classifier. The feature extraction over the raw waveform is…

Melody estimation or melody extraction refers to the extraction of the primary or fundamental dominant frequency in a melody. This sequence of frequencies obtained represents the pitch of the dominant melodic line from recorded music audio signals. The music signal may be monophonic or polyphonic. The melody extraction problem from audio signals gets complicated when we start dealing with polyphonic audio data. This is because in generalized audio signals, the sounds are highly correlated over both frequency and time domains. This complex overlap of many sounds, makes identification of predomin…

This paper introduces a modification of phase transform on singular value decomposition (SVD-PHAT) to localize multiple sound sources. This work aims to improve localization accuracy and keeps the algorithm complexity low for real-time applications. This method relies on multiple scans of the search space, with projection of each low-dimensional observation onto orthogonal subspaces. We show that this method localizes multiple sound sources more accurately than discrete SRP-PHAT, with a reduction in the Root Mean Square Error up to 0.0395 radians.
Automated Audio Captioning is a cross-modal task, generating natural language descriptions to summarize the audio clips' sound events. However, grounding the actual sound events in the given audio based on its corresponding caption has not been investigated. Based on such, we propose the text-to-audio grounding (TAG) task, which interactively considers the relationship between audio pro…

2D convolution is widely used in sound event detection (SED) to recognize two dimensional time-frequency patterns of sound events. We propose a method for the blind separation of sounds of musical instruments in audio signals. We describe the individual tones via a parametric model, training a dictionary to capture the relative amplitudes of the harmonics. The model parameters are predicted via a U-Net, which is a type of deep neural network. The network is trained without ground truth information, based on the difference between the model prediction and the individual time frames of the short-time Fourier transform. Since some of the model parameters do not yield a useful backpropagation gradient, we model them stochasti…
