We investigate the thermalization of a two-component scalar field across a second-order phase transition under extremely fast quenches. We find that vortices start developing at the final temperature of the quench, i.e., below the critical point. Specifically, we find that vortices emerge once the fluctuating field departures from its symmetric state and evolves towards a metastable and inhomogenous configuration. The density of primordial vortices at the relaxation time is a decreasing function of the final temperature of the quench. Subsequently, vortices and antivortices annihilate at a rate that eventually determines the total thermalization time. This rate decreases if the theory contains a discrete anisotropy, which otherwise leaves the primordial vortex density unaffected. Our results thus establish a link between the topological processes involved in the vortex dynamics and the delay in the thermalization of the system.
We conjecture that thermalization following a quantum quench in a strongly correlated quantum system is closely connected to many-body delocalization in the space of quasi-particles. This scenario is tested in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain with different types of integrability-breaking terms. We first quantify the deviations from integrability by analyzing the level spacing statistics and the inverse participation ratio of the system's eigenstates. We then focus on thermalization, by studying the dynamics after a sudden quench of the anisotropy parameter. Our numerical simulations clea…
The statistical equilibria of the dynamics of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation (GPE) with a finite range of spatial Fourier modes are characterized using a new algorithm, based on a stochastically forced Ginzburg-Landau equation (SGLE), that directly generates grand canonical distributions.. The SGLE-generated distributions are validated against finite-temperature GPE-thermalized states and exact low-temperature results. A standard second-order $λ$-transition is exhibited. A new mechanism of GPE thermalization through a direct cascade of energy is found using initial conditions with mass and ener…
We show that after a quantum quench of the parameter controlling the number of particles in a Fermi-Hubbard model on scale free graphs, the distribution of energy modes follows a power law dependent on the quenched parameter and the connectivity of the graph. This paper contributes to the literature of quantum quenches on lattices, in which, for many integrable lattice models the distribution of modes after a quench thermalizes to a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble; this paper provides another example of distribution which can arise after relaxation. We argue that the main role is played by the symm…
We describe the application of pseudo-spectral methods to problems of holographic thermal quenches of relevant couplings in strongly coupled gauge theories. We focus on quenches of a fermionic mass term in a strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma, and the subsequent equilibration of the system. From the dual gravitational perspective, we study the gravitational collapse of a massive scalar field in asymptotically anti-de Sitter geometry with a prescribed boundary condition for its non-normalizable mode. Access to the full background geometry of the gravitational collapse allows …
We study the quantum relaxation of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model after global quenches with a real-time variational Monte Carlo method and address the question whether this non-integrable, two-dimensional system thermalizes or not. We consider both interaction quenches in the paramagnetic phase and field quenches in the ferromagnetic phase and compare the time-averaged probability distributions of non-conserved quantities like magnetization and correlation functions to the thermal distributions according to the canonical Gibbs ensemble obtained with quantum Monte Carlo simul…
We study the dynamics and thermalization of strongly correlated fermions in finite one-dimensional lattices after a quantum quench. Our calculations are performed using exact diagonalization. We focus on one- and two-body observables such as the momentum distribution function [n(k)] and the density-density structure factor [N(k)], respectively, and study the effects of approaching an integrable point. We show that while the relaxation dynamics and thermalization of N(k) for fermions is very similar to the one of hardcore bosons, the behavior of n(k) is distinctively different. The latter obser…
We excite the vacuum of a relativistic theory of bosons coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field in 1+1 dimensions (bosonic Schwinger model) out of equilibrium by creating a spatially separated particle-antiparticle pair connected by a string of electric field. During the evolution, we observe a strong confinement of bosons witnessed by the bending of their light cone, reminiscent of what has been observed for the Ising model [Nat. Phys. 13, 246 (2017)]. As a consequence, for the time scales we are able to simulate, the system evades thermalization and generates exotic asymptotic states. These states a…
We explore the robustness of universal dynamical scaling behavior in a quantum system near criticality with respect to initialization in a large class of states with finite energy. By focusing on a homogeneous XY quantum spin chain in a transverse field, we characterize the non-equilibrium response under adiabatic and sudden quench processes originating from a pure as well as a mixed excited initial state, and involving either a regular quantum critical or a multicritical point. We find that the critical exponents of the ground-state quantum phase transition can be encoded in the dynamical sca…
We study quantum quenches between integrable and nonintegrable hard-core boson models in the thermodynamic limit with numerical linked cluster expansions. We show that while quenches in which the initial state is a thermal equilibrium state of an integrable model and the final Hamiltonian is nonintegrable (quantum chaotic) lead to thermalization, the reverse is not true. While this might appear counterintuitive given the fact that the eigenstates of both Hamiltonians are related by a unitary transformation, we argue that it is generic. Hence, the lack of thermalization of integrable systems is…
An exact analytic solution for the dynamics of vortex pairs is obtained for rapid temperature quenches of a superfluid film starting from the line of critical points below the critical temperature $T_{KT}$. An approximate solution for quenches at and above above $T_{KT}$ provides insights into the origin of logarithmic transients in the vortex decay, and are in general agreement with recent simulations of the quenched XY model. These results confirm that there is no "creation" of vortices whose density increases with the quench rate as predicted by the Kibble-Zurek theory, but only monotonic d…
In a recent paper Roux [Phys. Rev. A 79, 021608(R) (2009), arXiv:0810.3720] argued that thermalization in a Bose-Hubbard system, after a quench, follows from the approximate Boltzmann distribution of the overlap between the initial state and the eigenstates of the final Hamiltonian. We show here that the distribution of the overlaps is in general not related to the canonical (or microcanonical) distribution and, hence, it cannot explain why thermalization occurs in quantum systems.
We study the evolution of 3d weakly interacting bosons at finite chemical potential with the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We fully characterise the vortex network in an out of equilibrium. At high temperature the filament statistics are the ones of fully-packed loop models. The vortex tangle undergoes a geometric percolation transition within the thermodynamically ordered phase. After infinitely fast quenches across the thermodynamic critical point deep into the ordered phase, we identify a first approach towards the critical percolation state, a later coarsening process that does not…
Dynamic correlation and response functions of classical and quantum systems in thermal equilibrium are connected by fluctuation-dissipation theorems, which allow an alternative definition of their (unique) temperature. Motivated by this fundamental property, we revisit the issue of thermalization of closed many-body quantum systems long after a sudden quench, focussing on the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Ising chain in a critical transverse field. We show the emergence of distinct observable-dependent effective temperatures, which rule out Gibbs thermalization in a strict sense but might st…
Rapidly quenched Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) superfluid transitions are studied by solving the Fokker-Planck equation for the vortex-pair dynamics in conjunction with the KT recursion relations. Power-law decays of the vortex density at long times are found, and the results are in agreement with a scaling proposal made by Minnhagen and co-workers for the dynamical critical exponent. The superfluid density is strongly depressed after a quench, with the subsequent recovery being logarithmically slow for starting temperatures near T$_{KT}$. No evidence is found of vortices being ''created'' in a rap…
We use thermalization indicators and numerical linked cluster expansions to probe the onset of many-body localization in a disordered one-dimensional hard-core boson model in the thermodynamic limit. We show that after equilibration following a quench from a delocalized state, the momentum distribution indicates a freezing of one-particle correlations at higher values than in thermal equilibrium. The position of the delocalization to localization transition, identified by the breakdown of thermalization with increasing disorder strength, is found to be consistent with the value from the level …
We study spectral properties and the dynamics after a quench of one-dimensional spinless fermions with short-range interactions and long-range random hopping. We show that a sufficiently fast decay of the hopping term promotes localization effects at finite temperature, which prevents thermalization even if the classical motion is chaotic. For slower decays, we find that thermalization does occur. However, within this model, the latter regime falls in an unexpected universality class, namely, observables exhibit a power-law (as opposed to an exponential) approach to their thermal expectation v…
The properties of rapidly quenched superfluid phase transitions are computed for two-dimensional Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) systems. The decay in the vortex-pair density and the recovery of the superfluid density after a quench are found by solving the Fokker-Planck equation describing the vortex dynamics, in conjunction with the KT recursion relations. The vortex density is found to decay approximately as the inverse of the time from the quench, in agreement with computer simulations and with scaling theories.
We use quantum quenches to study the dynamics and thermalization of hardcore bosons in finite one-dimensional lattices. We perform exact diagonalizations and find that, far away from integrability, few-body observables thermalize. We then study the breakdown of thermalization as one approaches an integrable point. This is found to be a smooth process in which the predictions of standard statistical mechanics continuously worsen as the system moves toward integrability. We establish a direct connection between the presence or absence of thermalization and the validity or failure of the eigensta…
We study the effects of rapid temperature and magnetic field changes on the non-equilibrium relaxation dynamics of magnetic vortex lines in disordered type-II superconductors by employing an elastic line model and performing Langevin molecular dynamics simulations. In a previously equilibrated system, either the temperature is suddenly changed, or the magnetic field is instantaneously altered which is reflected in adding or removing flux lines to or from the system. The subsequent aging properties are investigated in samples with either randomly distributed point-like or extended columnar defe…
The superfluid density is calculated theoretically for incompressible vortex lattices in two dimensions that have isolated dislocations quenched in by a random arrangement of pinned vortices. The latter are assumed to be sparse and to be fixed to material defects. It is shown that the pinned vortices act to confine a single dislocation of the vortex lattice along its glide plane. Plastic creep of the two-dimensional vortex lattice is thereby impeded, and macroscopic phase coherence results at low temperature in the limit of a dilute concentration of quenched-in dislocations.
We investigate the non-equilibrium states of an interacting multi-component quantum system when only an extensive subsystem is quantum-quenched or driven from the ground state. As a concrete example, we consider a system where two XXZ spin chains are coupled to a transverse field Ising (TFI) chain, and only the transverse field in the TFI chain is quantum-quenched or periodically driven in time, starting from an initially ordered state. This system is studied using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations and various entanglement entropy diagnostics. In the case of quantum quenc…
By exploring a phase space hydrodynamics description of one-dimensional free Fermi gas, we discuss how systems settle down to steady states described by the generalized Gibbs ensembles through quantum quenches. We investigate time evolutions of the Fermions which are trapped in external potentials or a circle for a variety of initial conditions and quench protocols. We analytically compute local observables such as particle density and show that they always exhibit power law relaxation at late times. We find a simple rule which determines the power law exponent. Our findings are, in principle,…
Gauge theories form the foundation of modern physics, with applications ranging from elementary particle physics and early-universe cosmology to condensed matter systems. We perform quantum simulations of the unitary dynamics of a U(1) symmetric gauge field theory and demonstrate emergent irreversible behavior. The highly constrained gauge theory dynamics is encoded in a one-dimensional Bose--Hubbard simulator, which couples fermionic matter fields through dynamical gauge fields. We investigate global quantum quenches and the equilibration to a steady state well approximated by a thermal ensem…
In equilibrium, disorder conspires with topological defects to redefine the ordered states of matter in systems as diverse as crystals, superconductors and liquid crystals. Far from equilibrium, however, the consequences of quenched disorder on active condensed matter remain virtually uncharted. Here, we reveal a state of strongly disordered active matter with no counterparts in equilibrium: a dynamical vortex glass. Combining high-content microfluidic experiments and theory, we show how colloidal flocks collectively cruise through disorder without relaxing the topological singularities of the…
We study the long time behaviour of local observables following a quantum quench in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories possessing additional conserved charges besides the energy. We show that the expectation value of an arbitrary string of {\it local} observables supported on a finite interval exponentially approaches an equilibrium value. The equilibrium is characterized by a temperature and chemical potentials defined in terms of the quenched state. For an infinite number of commuting conserved charges, the equilibrium ensemble is a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We compute the ther…
Ferromagnetic order in superconductors can induce a {\em spontaneous} vortex (SV) state. For external field ${\bf H}=0$, rotational symmetry guarantees a vanishing tilt modulus of the SV solid, leading to drastically different behavior than that of a conventional, external-field-induced vortex solid. We show that quenched disorder and anharmonic effects lead to elastic moduli that are wavevector-dependent out to arbitrarily long length scales, and non-Hookean elasticity. The latter implies that for weak external fields $H$, the magnetic induction scales {\em universally} like $B(H)\sim B(0)+ c…
Time-resolved local induction measurements near to the vortex lattice order-disorder transition in optimally doped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals shows that the high-field, disordered phase can be quenched to fields as low as half the transition field. Over an important range of fields, the electrodynamical behavior of the vortex system is governed by the co-existence of the two phases in the sample. We interpret the results in terms of supercooling of the high-field phase and the possible first order nature of the order-disorder transition at the ``second peak''.
We found a finite temperature glass transition in the absence of quenched disorder in frustrated Josephson junction arrays (JJA) on a square lattice with anisotropic Josephson couplings by numerical simulations. The vortexes develop zigzag stripes into the direction of weaker coupling at low temperatures. The whole amorphous vortex solid can flow smoothly into the direction of stronger coupling by non-trivial soft modes. As the result the macroscopic phase coherence is destroyed being reminiscent of vortex flow in pure bulk superconductors or spin-chirality decoupling in frustrated magnets. On…
We use Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D uniformly frustrated XY model, with uncorrelated quenched randomness in the in-plane couplings, to model the effect of random point pins on the vortex line phases of a type II superconductor. We map out the phase diagram as a function of temperature T and randomness strength p for fixed applied magnetic field. We find that, as p increases to a critical value p_c, the first order vortex lattice melting line turns parallel to the T axis, and continues smoothly down to low temperature, rather than ending at a critical point. The entropy jump across this li…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of two dimensional planar ion Coulomb crystals undergoing a structural buckling transition to a three plane configuration, driven by a reduction of the transverse confining frequency. This phase transition can be theoretically modeled using a mapping to a two dimensional Ginzburg-Landau theory with complex order parameter field. We demonstrate that finite rate quenches result in creation of stable topological vortices, which are localized point regions around which the phase of the order parameter field winds a multiple of 2π. The density of the defects as…
The three dimensional XY model with quenched random disorder and finite screening is studied. We argue that the system scales to model with $λ\simeq 0\simeq T$ and the resulting effective model is studied numerically by defect energy scaling. In zero external field we find that there exists a true superconducting phase with a stiffness exponent $θ\simeq +1.0$ for weak disorder. For low magnetic field and weak disorder, there is also a superconducting phase with $θ\simeq +1.0$ which we conjecture is a Bragg glass. For larger disorder or applied field, there is a non superconducting phase with $…
We show that periodically driven superconducting vortices in the presence of quenched disorder exhibit a transition from reversible to irreversible flow under increasing vortex density or cycle period. This type of behavior has recently been observed for periodically sheared colloidal suspensions and we demonstrate that driven vortex systems exhibit remarkably similar behavior. We also provide evidence that the onset of irreversible behavior is a dynamical phase transition.
We study sudden quantum quenches in which the initial states are selected to be either eigenstates of an integrable Hamiltonian that is nonmappable to a noninteracting one or a nonintegrable Hamiltonian, while the Hamiltonian after the quench is always integrable and mappable to a noninteracting one. By studying weighted energy densities and entropies, we show that quenches starting from nonintegrable (chaotic) eigenstates lead to an "ergodic" sampling of the eigenstates of the final Hamiltonian, while those starting from the integrable eigenstates do not (or at least it is not apparent for th…
