We found a finite temperature glass transition in the absence of quenched disorder in frustrated Josephson junction arrays (JJA) on a square lattice with anisotropic Josephson couplings by numerical simulations. The vortexes develop zigzag stripes into the direction of weaker coupling at low temperatures. The whole amorphous vortex solid can flow smoothly into the direction of stronger coupling by non-trivial soft modes. As the result the macroscopic phase coherence is destroyed being reminiscent of vortex flow in pure bulk superconductors or spin-chirality decoupling in frustrated magnets. On the contrary such soft-modes are absent into the direction of weaker coupling. Consequently the system behaves as a Ohmic (unjammed) liquid or superconducting (jammed) solid with respect to injection of external electric current, i. e. shear, along different directions. This jamming-glass transition can be regarded as a two dimensional realization of the Aubry's transition.
An hour-glass shaped magnetic excitation spectrum appears to be an universal characteristic of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Fluctuating charge stripes or alternative band structure approaches are able to explain the origin of these spectra. Recently, an hour- glass spectrum has been observed in an insulating cobaltate, thus, favouring the charge stripe scenario. Here we show that neither charge stripes nor band structure effects are responsible for the hour-glass dispersion in a cobaltate within the checkerboard charge ordered regime of La2-xSrxCoO4. The search for charge str…
Based on the unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation we study the possibility that the diagonal incommensurate spin scattering in the spin glass phase of lanthanum cuprates originates from stripe formation. Similar to the metallic phase two types of diagonal stripe structures appear to be stable: (a) site-centered textures which have one hole per site along the stripe and (b) ferromagnetic stair-case structures which are the diagonal equivalent to bond-centered stripes in the metallic phase and which on average have a filling of 3/4 holes per stripe site. We give a detailed analysis of the stabi…
In this paper we revisit the glass model describing the macroscopic behavior of the High-Temperature superconductors. We link the glass model at the microscopic level to the striped phase phenomenon, recently discussed widely. The size of the striped phase domains is consistent with earlier predictions of the glass model when it was introduced for High-Temperature Superconductivity in 1987. In an additional step we use the Hubbard model to describe the microscopic mechanism for d-wave pairing within these finite size stripes. We discuss the implications for superconducting correlations of Hubb…
Superconductivity in layered copper-oxide compounds emerges when charge carriers are added to antiferromagnetically-ordered CuO2 layers. The carriers destroy the antiferromagnetic order, but strong spin fluctuations persist throughout the superconducting phase and are intimately linked to super-conductivity. Neutron scattering measurements of spin fluctuations in hole-doped copper oxides have revealed an unusual `hour-glass' feature in the momentum-resolved magnetic spectrum, present in a wide range of superconducting and non-superconducting materials. There is no widely-accepted explanation f…
We examine the effects of disorder on striped phases in high-temperature superconductors and related materials. In the presence of quenched disorder, pinning by the atomic lattice - which might give rise to commensuration effects - is irrelevant for the stripe array on large length scales. As a consequence, the stripes have divergent displacement fluctuations and topological defects are present at all temperatures. Therefore the positional order of the stripe array is short ranged, with a finite correlation length even at zero temperature. Thus lock-in phenomena can exist only as crossovers bu…
For stripes in doped antiferromagnets, we find that the ratio of spin and charge correlation lenghts, $ξ_{s}/ξ_{c}$, provide a sharp criterion for determining the dominant form of disorder in the system. If stripes disorder is controlled by topological defects then $ξ_{s}/ξ_{c}\lesssim 1$. In contast, if stripes correlations are disordered primarily by non-topological elastic deformations (i.e., a Bragg-Glass type of disorder) then $1<ξ_{s}/ξ_{c}\lesssim 4$ is expected. Therefore, the observation of $ξ_{s}/ξ_{c}\approx 4$ in $(LaNd)_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ and $ξ_{s}/ξ_{c}\approx 3$ in $La_{2/3}Sr…
We report measurements of the longitudinal ($^{139}T_1^{-1}$) and transverse ($^{139}T_2^{-1}$) decay rates of the magnetization of $^{139}$La nuclei performed in a high quality single crystal of La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$. We observe a dramatic slowing of the Cu 3d spins manifested as a sharp increase of both $^{139}T_1^{-1}$ and $^{139}T_2^{-1}$ below 30 K. We find that in this temperature range the fluctuations involve a unique time scale $τ$ which diverges as $(T-T_{\rm A})^{-1.9}$ with $T_{\rm A}\thickapprox 5$ K. This behavior is distinct from the continuous freezing obser…
In order to investigate the relationship between the so-called stripe correlations and the high-Tc superconductivity, we have carried out magnetic susceptibility and zero-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements in partially Fe-substituted La2-xSrxCu1-yFeyO4 (LSCFO). It has been found that the Fe substitution induces successive magnetic transitions in the overdoped regime, namely, a spin-glass transition of Fe3+ spins due to the RKKY interaction based on itinerant spins at higher temperatures and a stripe-order transition of localized Cu2+ spins at lower temperatures. The stripe-order transitio…
We report a comprehensive Cu and La NQR study down to 350mK in the stripe phase of the hole-doped high temperature superconductors with hole concentration approximately 1/8. We observe the hyperfine broadened NQR lineshape only below 8-20K for x=1/8, indicating that the ordered moments continue to fluctuate slowly even below the temperature range where they appear static in other measurements. Detailed numerical simulations of the Zeeman perturbed Cu NQR lineshape establish that widely accepted models of periodic modulation of spin density waves with maximum moment approxiamtely 0.3mu_B can no…
We present Co substitution effects in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y-z}$Co$_{z}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $z$ $\leq$ 1.73) single crystal alloys. By 3.5\% of Co doping superconductivity is suppressed whereas phase separation of semiconducting K$_{2}$Fe$_{4}$Se$_{5}$ and superconducting/metallic K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is still present. We show that the arrangement and distribution of superconducting phase (stripe phase) is connected with the arrangement of K, Fe and Co atoms. Semiconducting spin glass is found in proximity to superconducting state, persisting for large Co concentrations. At high Co concentration…
The anisotropic frustrated 3D XY model with strong disorder in the coupling constants is studied as a model of a disordered superconductor in an applied magnetic field. Simulations with the exchange Monte Carlo method are performed for frustrations f=1/5 and f=1/4, corresponding to two different values of the magnetic field along the z direction. The anisotropy is also varied. The determination of the helicity modulus from twist histograms is discussed in some detail and the helicity modulus is used in finite size scaling analyses of the vortex glass transition. The general picture is that the…
In this work it is studied the Hopfield fermionic spin glass model which allows interpolating from trivial randomness to a highly frustrated regime. Therefore, it is possible to investigate whether or not frustration is an essential ingredient which would allow this magnetic disordered model to present naturally inverse freezing by comparing the two limits, trivial randomness and highly frustrated regime and how different levels of frustration could affect such unconventional phase transition. The problem is expressed in the path integral formalism where the spin operators are represented by b…
A vortex solid with self-generated randomness is found theoretically in a frustrated Josephson junction array (JJA) under external magnetic field with anisotropic couplings. Vorticies induced by external magnetic field develop stripes parallel to the direction of weaker coupling. It is shown analytically that there is a continuous, gapless band of metastable states in which stripes are deformed randomly by transverse undulation. The vortex solid with the frozen undulation in a metastable state freely slides along the direction of stronger coupling, thereby destroying ordering of phases even at…
We have studied the spin glass behaviour of non-superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{0.95}$Zn$_{0.05}$O$_4$ ($x=0.10-0.22$). As in the superconducting analogues of these samples the spin glass transition temperature $T_g$ decreases with increasing $x$, and vanishes at $x=0.19$. A local enhancement in $T_g$ at $x=0.12$ is also observed and attributed to stripe ordering. The disappearance of $T_g$ for $x\geq0.19$ is discussed in terms of a quantum phase transition.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependence of magnetic excitations (for energies up to 100 meV) in the cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. This compound exhibits stripe order below a temperature of ~50 K; previous measurements have shown that the magnetic excitations of the stripe-ordered phase have an hour-glass-like dispersion, with a saddle point at ~50 meV. Here we compare measurements in the disordered phase taken at 65 and 300 K. At energies on the scale of $k_{\rm B}T$, there is substantial momentum-broadening of the signal, and the low-energy incommens…
A review is given on the theory of vortex-glass phases in impure type-II superconductors in an external field. We begin with a brief discussion of the effects of thermal fluctuations on the spontaneously broken U(1) and translation symmetries, on the global phase diagram and on the critical behaviour. Introducing disorder we restrict ourselves to the experimentally most relevant case of weak uncorrelated randomness which is known to destroy the long-ranged translational order of the Abrikosov lattice in three dimensions. Elucidating possible residual glassy ordered phases, we distinguish betwe…
We discuss the scenario of two-step magnetic ordering in layered high temperature superconductors after charge ordering. As the temperature decreases, the transition from 3D Heisenberg spin behavior to 2D XY coupling of the Cu spins occurs at Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in dielectric stripes. Further temperature decreasing leads to the 3D spin glass transition.
Systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were performed on single crystals of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05). For all samples the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility shows typical spin-glass features with spin-glass transition temperatures Tg of 6.3K, 5.5K and 5.0K for x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05, respectively. The canonical spin-glass order parameter extracted from the in-plane susceptibility of all the samples follows a universal scaling curve. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetic susceptibility deviates from Curie law below a te…
We use Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D uniformly frustrated XY model, with uncorrelated quenched randomness in the in-plane couplings, to model the effect of random point pins on the vortex line phases of a type II superconductor. We map out the phase diagram as a function of temperature T and randomness strength p for fixed applied magnetic field. We find that, as p increases to a critical value p_c, the first order vortex lattice melting line turns parallel to the T axis, and continues smoothly down to low temperature, rather than ending at a critical point. The entropy jump across this li…
We present here a new mechanism of high-T_c (critical temperature) superconductivity. This new model is able to explain all the HTSC (high-T_c superconductivity) properties, like high T_c, origin and nature of NSPG (normal state pseudogap), anomalous superconducting state (SS) energy gap (SSEG) properties, absence of NMR spin relaxation rate coherence peak, existence of NSPG below T_c, nature of high-T_c magnetic superconductivity, external magnetic field (H) dependence of the NSPG formation temperature T^*, etc. The coexistence of NSPG and SS BCS enegy gap (EG), below T_c, has been predicted …
