We prove here that the height function associated to non-simple exclusion processes with arbitrary jump-length converges to the solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang SPDE under suitable scaling and renormalization. This extends the work of Dembo-Tsai'16 for arbitrary jump-length and Goncalves-Jara '17 for the non-stationary regime. Thus we answer a ``Big Picture Question" from the AIM workshop on KPZ and also expand on the almost empty set of non-integrable and non-stationary particle systems for which weak KPZ universality is proven. We use an approximate microscopic Cole-Hopf transform as in Dembo-Tsai'16 but we develop tools to analyze local statistics of the particle system via local equilibrium and work of Goncalves-Jara '17. Local equilibrium is done via the one-block step in Guo-Papanicolaou-Varadhan '88 for path-space/dynamic statistics.

We consider the transition probabilities for random walks in $1+1$ dimensional space-time random environments (RWRE). For critically tuned weak disorder we prove a sharp large deviation result: after appropriate rescaling, the transition probabilities for the RWRE evaluated in the large deviation regime, converge to the solution to the stochastic heat equation (SHE) with multiplicative noise (the logarithm of which is the KPZ equation). We apply this to the exactly solvable Beta RWRE and additionally present a formal derivation of the convergence of certain moment formulas for that model to th…
We study Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in spatial dimension 3 or larger driven by a Gaussian space-time white noise with a small convolution in space. When the noise intensity is small, it is known that the solutions converge to a random limit as the smoothing parameter is turned off. We identify this limit, in the case of general initial conditions ranging from flat to droplet. We provide strong approximations of the solution which obey exactly the limit law. We prove that this limit has sub-Gaussian lower tails, implying existence of all negative (and positive) moments.
We analyze a class of non-simple exclusion processes and the corresponding growth models by generalizing Gaertners Cole-Hopf transformation. We identify the main non-linearity and eliminate it by imposing a gradient type condition. For hopping range at most 3, using the generalized transformation, we prove the convergence of the exclusion process toward the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. This is the first universality result concerning interacting particle systems in the context of KPZ universality class. While this class of exclusion processes are not explicitly solvable, we obtain the e…
We consider a system of infinitely many interacting Brownian motions that models the height of a one-dimensional interface between two bulk phases. We prove that the large scale fluctuations of the system are well approximated by the solution to the KPZ equation provided the microscopic interaction is weakly asymmetric. The proof is based on the martingale solutions of Goncalves and Jara and the corresponding uniqueness result of Gubinelli and Perkowski.
Motivated by the recent exact solution of the {\it stationary-state} Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) statistics by Imamura & Sasamoto (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 190603 (2012)), as well as a precursor experimental signature unearthed by Takeuchi (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 210604 (2013)), we establish here the universality of these phenomena, examining scaling behaviors of directed polymers in a random medium, the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative noise, and kinetically roughened KPZ growth models. We emphasize the value of cross KPZ-Class universalities, revealing crossover effects of …
Integrable probability has emerged as an active area of research at the interface of probability/mathematical physics/statistical mechanics on the one hand, and representation theory/integrable systems on the other. Informally, integrable probabilistic systems have two properties: 1) It is possible to write down concise and exact formulas for expectations of a variety of interesting observables (or functions) of the system. 2) Asymptotics of the system and associated exact formulas provide access to exact descriptions of the properties and statistics of large universality classes and universal…
We study the atypically large deviations of the height $H \sim {\cal O}(t)$ at the origin at late times in $1+1$-dimensional growth models belonging to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We present exact results for the rate functions for the discrete single step growth model, as well as for the continuum KPZ equation in a droplet geometry. Based on our exact calculation of the rate functions we argue that models in the KPZ class undergo a third order phase transition from a strong coupling to a weak coupling phase, at late times.
We study height fluctuations of interfaces in the $(1+1)$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class, growing at different speeds in the left half and the right half of space. Carrying out simulations of the discrete polynuclear growth model with two different growth rates, combined with the standard setting for the droplet, flat, and stationary geometries, we find that the fluctuation properties at and near the boundary are described by the KPZ half-space problem developed in the theoretical literature. In particular, in the droplet case, the distribution at the boundary is given by the larg…
We study the aging property for stationary models in the KPZ universality class. In particular, we show aging for the stationary KPZ fixed point, the Cole-Hopf solution to the stationary KPZ equation, the height function of the stationary TASEP, last-passage percolation with boundary conditions and stationary directed polymers in the intermediate disorder regime. All of these models are shown to display a universal aging behavior characterized by the rate of decay of their correlations. As a comparison, we show aging for models in the Edwards-Wilkinson universality class where a different deca…

Over the past years our understanding of the scaling properties of the solutions to the one-dimensional KPZ equation has advanced considerably, both theoretically and experimentally. In our contribution we export these insights to the case of coupled KPZ equations in one dimension. We establish equivalence with nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics for multi-component driven stochastic lattice gases. To check the predictions of the theory, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the two-component AHR model. Its steady state is computed using the matrix product ansatz. Thereby all coefficients appe…
We solve the large deviations of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in one dimension at short time by introducing an approach which combines field theoretical, probabilistic and integrable techniques. We expand the program of the weak noise theory, which maps the large deviations onto a non-linear hydrodynamic problem, and unveil its complete solvability through a connection to the integrability of the Zakharov-Shabat system. Exact solutions, depending on the initial condition of the KPZ equation, are obtained using the inverse scattering method and a Fredholm determinant framework recentl…
We present the solution of the weak noise theory (WNT) for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in one dimension at short time for flat initial condition (IC). The non-linear hydrodynamic equations of the WNT are solved analytically through a connexion to the Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) system using its classical integrability. This approach is based on a recently developed Fredholm determinant framework previously applied to the droplet IC. The flat IC provides the case for a non-vanishing boundary condition of the ZS system and yields a richer solitonic structure comprising the appearance of multiple b…
The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class describes a broad range of non-equilibrium fluctuations, including those of growing interfaces, directed polymers and particle transport, to name but a few. Since the year 2000, our understanding of the one-dimensional KPZ class has been completely renewed by mathematical physics approaches based on exact solutions. Mathematical physics has played a central role since then, leading to a myriad of new developments, but their implications are clearly not limited to mathematics -- as a matter of fact, it can also be studied experimentally. The aim …
The power spectrum of interface fluctuations in the $(1+1)$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class is studied both experimentally and numerically. The $1/f^α$-type spectrum is found and characterized through a set of "critical exponents" for the power spectrum. The recently formulated "aging Wiener-Khinchin theorem" accounts for the observed exponents. Interestingly, the $1/f^α$ spectrum in the KPZ class turns out to contain information on a universal distribution function characterizing the asymptotic state of the KPZ interfaces, namely the Baik-Rains universal variance. It …
The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation on the real line is well-known to admit Brownian motion with a linear drift as a stationary distribution (modulo additive constants). We show that these solutions are attractive, a result known as a one force--one solution (1F1S) principle or synchronization: the solution to the KPZ equation started in the distant past from an initial condition with a given slope will converge almost surely to a Brownian motion with that drift, which shows in particular that these invariant measures are totally ergodic. Our proof constructs the Busemann process for the eq…
We study the crossover from the macroscopic fluctuation theory (MFT) which describes 1D stochastic diffusive systems at late times, to the weak noise theory (WNT) which describes the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation at early times. We focus on the example of the diffusion in a time-dependent random field, observed in an atypical direction which induces an asymmetry. The crossover is described by a non-linear system which interpolates between the derivative and the standard non-linear Schrodinger equations in imaginary time. We solve this system using the inverse scattering method for mixed-t…
We study fluctuations of interfaces in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class with curved initial conditions. By simulations of a cluster growth model and experiments of liquid-crystal turbulence, we determine the universal scaling functions that describe the height distribution and the spatial correlation of the interfaces growing outward from a ring. The scaling functions, controlled by a single dimensionless time parameter, show crossover from the statistical properties of the flat interfaces to those of the circular interfaces. Moreover, employing the KPZ variational formula to d…
We consider the system of $N$ one-dimensional free fermions confined by a harmonic well $V(x) = mω^2 {x^2}/{2}$ at finite inverse temperature $β= 1/T$. The average density of fermions $ρ_N(x,T)$ at position $x$ is derived. For $N \gg 1$ and $β\sim {\cal O}(1/N)$, $ρ_N(x,T)$ is given by a scaling function interpolating between a Gaussian at high temperature, for $β\ll 1/N$, and the Wigner semi-circle law at low temperature, for $β\gg N^{-1}$. In the latter regime, we unveil a scaling limit, for $β{\hbar ω}= b N^{-1/3}$, where the fluctuations close to the edge of the support, at $x \sim \pm \sq…
We have characterized the scaling behavior of the first-passage percolation (FPP) model on two types of discrete networks, the regular square lattice and the disordered Delaunay lattice, thereby addressing the effect of the underlying topology. Several distribution functions for the link-times were considered. The asymptotic behavior of the fluctuations for both the minimal arrival time and the lateral deviation of the geodesic path are in perfect agreement with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class regardless of the type of the link-time distribution and of the lattice topology. Pr…
We study the $(1+1)$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) interfaces growing inward from ring-shaped initial conditions, experimentally and numerically, using growth of a turbulent state in liquid-crystal electroconvection and an off-lattice Eden model, respectively. To realize the ring initial condition experimentally, we introduce a holography-based technique that allows us to design the initial condition arbitrarily. Then, we find that fluctuation properties of ingrowing circular interfaces are distinct from those for the curved or circular KPZ subclass and, instead, are characterized by t…
The nonequilibrium steady state of the one-dimensional (1D) Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class is studied in-depth by exact solutions, yet no direct experimental evidence of its characteristic statistical properties has been reported so far. This is arguably because, for an infinitely large system, infinitely long time is needed to reach such a stationary state and also to converge to the predicted universal behavior. Here we circumvent this problem in the experimental system of growing liquid-crystal turbulence, by generating an initial condition that possesses a long-range property…
Tracking the sign of fluctuations governed by the $(1+1)$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, we show, both experimentally and numerically, that its evolution has an unexpected link to a simple stochastic model called the renewal process, studied in the context of aging and ergodicity breaking. Although KPZ and the renewal process are fundamentally different in many aspects, we find remarkable agreement in some of the time correlation properties, such as the recurrence time distributions and the persistence probability, while the two systems can be different in other prop…
