In this article, using a known method, a computation is performed of the derivatives of the microcanonical entropy, with respect to the energy up to the 4-th order, using a Laplace transform technique, and adapted it to the case where the total momentum is conserved. The outcome of this computation answers a theoretical question concerning the description of thermodynamics associated with a Hamiltonian flow in presence of an additional conserved quantity besides energy. This is also of practical interest in numerical simulations of the microcanonical thermodynamics associated to classical Hamiltonian flows.
In the general case of a many-body Hamiltonian system, described by an autonomous Hamiltonian $H$, and with $K\geq 0$ independent conserved quantities, we derive the microcanonical thermodynamics. By a simple approach, based on the differential geometry, we derive the microcanonical entropy and the derivatives of the entropy with respect to the conserved quantities. In such a way, we show that all the thermodynamical quantities, as the temperature, the chemical potential or the specific heat, are measured as a microcanonical average of the appropriate microscopic dynamical functions that we ha…
The development of reliable methods for estimating microcanonical averages constitutes an important issue in statistical mechanics. One possibility consists of calculating a given microcanonical quantity by means of typical relations in the grand-canonical ensemble. But given that distinct ensembles are equivalent only at the thermodynamic limit, a natural question is if finite size effects would prevent such procedure. In this work we investigate thoroughly this query in different systems yielding first and second order phase transitions. Our study is carried out from the direct comparison wi…
We study a class of nonequilibrium lattice models which describe local redistributions of a globally conserved energy. A particular subclass can be solved analytically, allowing to define a temperature T_{th} along the same lines as in the equilibrium microcanonical ensemble. The fluctuation-dissipation relation is explicitely found to be linear, but its slope differs from the inverse temperature T_{th}^{-1}. A numerical renormalization group procedure suggests that, at a coarse-grained level, all models behave similarly, leading to a two-parameter description of their macroscopic properties.
The basic quantity for the description of the statistical properties of physical systems is the density of states or equivalently the microcanonical entropy. Macroscopic quantities of a system in equilibrium can be computed directly from the entropy. Response functions such as the susceptibility are for example related to the curvature of the entropy surface. Interestingly, physical quantities in the microcanonical ensemble show characteristic properties of phase transitions already in finite systems. In this paper we investigate these characteristics for finite Ising systems. The singularitie…
We investigate the performance of machine learning algorithms trained exclusively with configurations obtained from importance sampling Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Ising model with conserved magnetization. For supervised machine learning, we use convolutional neural networks and find that the corresponding output not only allows to locate the phase transition point with high precision, it also displays a finite-size scaling characterized by an Ising critical exponent. For unsupervised learning, restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM) are trained to generate new configurations th…
In the study of 1D nonlinear Hamiltonian lattices, the conserved quantities play an important role in determining the actual behavior of heat conduction. Besides the total energy, total momentum and total stretch could also be conserved quantities. In microcanonical Hamiltonian dynamics, the total energy is always conserved. It was recently argued by Das and Dhar that whenever stretch (momentum) is not conserved in a 1D model, the momentum (stretch) and energy fields exhibit normal diffusion. In this work, we will systematically investigate the stretch diffusions for typical 1D nonlinear latti…
Attempts to establish microcanonical entropy as an adiabatic invariant date back to works of Gibbs and Hertz. More recently, a consistency relation based on adiabatic invariance has been used to argue for the validity of Gibbs (volume) entropy over Boltzmann (surface) entropy. Such consistency relation equates derivatives of thermodynamic entropy to ensemble average of the corresponding quantity in micro-state space (phase space or Hilbert space). In this work we propose to re-examine such a consistency relation when the number of particles ($N$) is considered as the independent thermodynamic …
With Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate short-time critical dynamics of the three-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic Ising model with a globally conserved magnetization $m_s$ (not the order parameter). From the power law behavior of the staggered magnetization (the order parameter), its second moment and the auto-correlation, we determine all static and dynamic critical exponents as well as the critical temperature. The universality class of $m_s=0$ is the same as that without a conserved quantity, but the universality class of non-zero $m_s$ is different.
Boltzmann's principle S(E,N,V...)=ln W(E,N,V...) allows the interpretation of Statistical Mechanics of a closed system as Pseudo-Riemannian geometry in the space of the conserved parameters E,N,V... (the conserved mechanical parameters in the language of Ruppeiner) without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The topology is controlled by the curvature of S(E,N,V...). The most interesting region is the region of (wrong) positive maximum curvature, the region of phase-separation. This is demonstrated among others for the equilibrium of a typical non-extensive system, a self-gravitating and rotatin…
Microcanonical thermodynamics (MCTh) is contrasted to canonical thermodynamics (CTh). At phase transitions of 1.order the two ensembles are NOT equivalent even in the thermodynamic limit . Energy fluctuations do not vanish and phase separations are suppressed in CTh. A proper treatment of fluctuations is neccessary. MCTh allows to address even isolated small systems where phase transitions can be clearly classified into first order and continuous ones. The microcanonical caloric curve T(E) determines the transition temperature, latent heat AND surface entropy/tension. For systems of ca.1000 Na…
We prove two statements about the long time dynamics of integrable Hamiltonian systems. In classical mechanics, we prove the microcanonical version of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) by mapping it to a known theorem and then extend it to the limit of infinite number of degrees of freedom. In quantum mechanics, we prove GGE for maximal Hamiltonians - a class of models stemming from a rigorous notion of quantum integrability understood as the existence of conserved charges with prescribed dependence on a system parameter, e.g. Hubbard U, anisotropy in the XXZ model etc. In analogy with clas…
We introduce a systematic classification method for the analogs of phase transitions in finite systems. This completely general analysis, which is applicable to any physical system and extends towards the thermodynamic limit, is based on the microcanonical entropy and its energetic derivative, the inverse caloric temperature. Inflection points of this quantity signal cooperative activity and thus serve as distinct indicators of transitions. We demonstrate the power of this method through application to the long-standing problem of liquid-solid transitions in elastic, flexible homopolymers.
We consider a generic classical many particle system described by an autonomous Hamiltonian $H(x^{_1},...,x^{_{N+2}})$ which, in addition, has a conserved quantity $V(x^{_1},...,x^{_{N+2}})=v$, so that the Poisson bracket $\{H,V \}$ vanishes. We derive in detail the microcanonical expressions for entropy and temperature. We show that both of these quantities depend on multidimensional integrals over submanifolds given by the intersection of the constant energy hypersurfaces with those defined by $V(x^{_1},...,x^{_{N+2}})=v$. We show that temperature and higher order derivatives of entropy are …
We show that generic systems with a single relevant conserved quantity reach the Carnot efficiency in the thermodynamic limit. Such a general result is illustrated by means of a diatomic chain of hard-point elastically colliding particles where the total momentum is the only relevant conserved quantity.
The Broad Histogram is a method allowing the direct calculation of the energy degeneracy $g(E)$. This quantity is independent of thermodynamic concepts such as thermal equilibrium. It only depends on the distribution of allowed (micro) states along the energy axis, but not on the energy changes between the system and its environment. Once one has obtained $g(E)$, no further effort is needed in order to consider different environment conditions, for instance, different temperatures, for the same system. The method is based on the exact relation between $g(E)$ and the microcanonical averages of …
We study a class of non-equilibrium lattice models describing local redistributions of a globally conserved quantity, which is interpreted as an energy. A particular subclass can be solved exactly, allowing to define a statistical temperature T_{th} along the same lines as in the equilibrium microcanonical ensemble. We compute the response function and find that when the fluctuation-dissipation relation is linear, the slope T_{FD}^{-1} of this relation differs from the inverse temperature T_{th}^{-1}. We argue that T_{th} is physically more relevant than T_{FD}, since in the steady-state regim…
Boltzmann's microcanonical entropy is the link between statistical physics and thermodynamics, forasmuch as the behavior of any thermodynamic quantity is directly related to the number of microscopic configurations. Accordingly, in this work, we investigate the behavior of the logarithm of the density of states of the three-state Potts model with an external field applied to one of the states using joint entropic simulations based on the Wang-Landau algorithm. Our analysis reveals that the microcanonical entropy curve is detachable, and each resulting path is related to the formation of cluste…

Depending on the exact experimental conditions, the thermodynamic properties of physical systems can be related to one or more thermostatistical ensembles. Here, we survey the notion of thermodynamic temperature in different statistical ensembles, focusing in particular on subtleties that arise when ensembles become non-equivalent. The 'mother' of all ensembles, the microcanonical ensemble, uses entropy and internal energy (the most fundamental, dynamically conserved quantity) to derive temperature as a secondary thermodynamic variable. Over the past century, some confusion has been caused by …
A mathematical method for constructing fractal curves and surfaces, termed the $pλn$ fractal decomposition, is presented. It allows any function to be split into a finite set of fractal discontinuous functions whose sum is equal everywhere to the original function. Thus, the method is specially suited for constructing families of fractal objects arising from a conserved physical quantity, the decomposition yielding an exact partition of the quantity in question. Most prominent classes of examples are provided by Hamiltonians and partition functions of statistical ensembles: By using this metho…
Microcanonical Thermodynamics allows the application of Statistical Mechanics on one hand to closed finite and even small systems and on the other to the largest,self-gravitating ones. However, one has to reconsider the fundamental principles of Statistical Mechanics especially its key quantity, entropy. Whereas in conventional Thermostatistics the homogeneity and extensivity of the system and the concavity of its entropy S(E) are central conditions, these fail for the systems considered here. E.g. at phase separation the entropy S(E) is necessarily convex to make e^{S(E)-E/T} bimodal in E (th…

Microcanonical thermodynamics allows the application of statistical mechanics both to finite and even small systems and also to the largest, self-gravitating ones. However, one must reconsider the fundamental principles of statistical mechanics especially its key quantity, entropy. Whereas in conventional thermostatistics, the homogeneity and extensivity of the system and the concavity of its entropy are central conditions, these fail for the systems considered here. For example, at phase separation, the entropy, S(E), is necessarily convex to make exp[S(E)-E/T] bimodal in E. Particularly, as …
The Gibbs entropy of a microcanonical network ensemble is the logarithm of the number of network configurations compatible with a set of hard constraints. This quantity characterizes the level of order and randomness encoded in features of a given real network. Here we show how to relate this entropy to large deviations of conjugated canonical ensembles. We derive exact expression for this correspondence using the cavity methods for some hard constraints.
We prove a general theorem which provides a strict lower bound on high-temperature Green-Kubo diffusion constants in locally interacting quantum lattice systems, under the assumption of existence of a quadratically extensive almost conserved quantity - an operator whose commutator with the lattice Hamiltonian is localized on the boundary sites only. We explicitly demonstrate and compute such a bound in two important models in one dimension, namely in the (isotropic) Heisenberg spin 1/2 chain and in the fermionic Hubbard chain.
