The plus and minus norm groups are constructed by Kobayashi as subgroups of the formal group of an elliptic curve with supersingular reduction, and they play an important role in Kobayashi's definition of the signed Selmer groups. In this paper, we study the cohomology of these plus and minus norm groups. In particular, we show that these norm groups are cohomologically trivial. As an application of our analysis, we establish certain (quasi-)projectivity properties of the non-primitive mixed signed Selmer groups of an elliptic curve with good reduction at all primes above $p$. We then build on these latter projectivity results to derive a Kida formula for the signed Selmer groups, and study the integrality property of the characteristic element attached to the signed Selmer groups.
We generalise Pollack's construction of plus/minus L-functions to certain cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ using the $p$-adic $L$-functions constructed in forthcoming work of Barrera, Dimitrov and Williams.
We give a new description of Pollack's plus and minus $p$-adic logarithms $\log_p^\pm$ in terms of distributions. In particular, if $μ_\pm$ denote the pre-images of $\log_p^\pm$ under the Amice transform, we give explicit formulae for the values $μ_\pm(a+p^n\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for all $a\in \mathbb{Z}_p$ and all integers $n\ge1$. Our formulae imply that the distribution $μ_-$ agrees with a distribution studied by Koblitz in 1977. Furthermore, we show that a similar description exists for Loeffler's two-variable analogues of these plus and minus logarithms.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, $E$ an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Suppose that $E$ has good reduction at any prime lying above $p$, and has supersingular reduction at some prime lying above $p$. In this paper, we construct the plus and the minus Selmer groups of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension in a more general setting than that of B.D. Kim, and give a generalization of a result of B.D. Kim on the triviality of finite $Λ$-submodules of the Pontryagin duals of the plus and the minus Selmer groups, where $Λ$ is the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group of the $\mat…
Let f be a cuspidal newform with complex multiplication (CM) and let p be an odd prime at which f is non-ordinary. We construct admissible p-adic L-functions for the symmetric powers of f, thus verifying general conjectures of Dabrowski and Panchishkin in this special case. We also construct their "mixed" plus and minus counterparts and prove an analogue of Pollack's decomposition of the admissible p-adic L-functions into mixed plus and minus p-adic L-functions. On the arithmetic side, we define corresponding mixed plus and minus Selmer groups. We unite the arithmetic with the analytic by firs…
For $(G,+)$ a finite abelian group the plus-minus weighted Davenport constant, denoted $\mathsf{D}_{\pm}(G)$, is the smallest $\ell$ such that each sequence $g_1 ... g_{\ell}$ over $G$ has a weighted zero-subsum with weights +1 and -1, i.e., there is a non-empty subset $I \subset \{1,..., \ell\}$ such that $\sum_{i \in I} a_i g_i =0$ for $a_i \in \{+1,-1\}$. We present new bounds for this constant, mainly lower bounds, and also obtain the exact value of this constant for various additional types of groups.
We define a subspace of the space of holomorphic modular forms of weight $k+1/2$ and level $4M$ where $M$ is odd and square-free. We show that this subspace is isomorphic under the Shimura-Niwa correspondence to the space of newforms of weight $2k$ and level $2M$ and that this is a Hecke isomorphism. The space we define is a proper subspace of the orthogonal complement of the Kohnen plus space if the Kohnen plus space is nonzero.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field where $p$ splits. Under appropriate hypotheses, Bertolini showed that the Selmer group of a $p$-ordinary elliptic curve over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension of $K$ does not admit any proper $Λ$-submodule of finite index, where $Λ$ is a suitable Iwasawa algebra. We generalize this result to the plus and minus Selmer groups (in the sense of Kobayashi) of $p$-supersingular elliptic curves. In particular, in our setting the plus/minus Selmer groups have $Λ$-corank one, so they are not $Λ$-cotorsion. As an application of our ma…
The Harborth constant of a finite abelian group is the smallest integer $\ell$ such that each subset of $G$ of cardinality $\ell$ has a subset of cardinality equal to the exponent of the group whose elements sum to the neutral element of the group. The plus-minus weighted analogue of this constant is defined in the same way except that instead of considering the sum of all elements of the subset one can choose to add either the element or its inverse. We determine these constants for certain groups, mainly groups that are the direct sum of a cyclic group and a group of order 2. Moreover, we co…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb Q$ and let $p\geq5$ be a prime of good supersingular reduction for $E$. Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying a modified "Heegner hypothesis" in which $p$ splits, write $K_\infty$ for the anticyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension of $K$ and let $Λ$ denote the Iwasawa algebra of $K_\infty/K$. By extending to the supersingular case the $Λ$-adic Kolyvagin method originally developed by Bertolini in the ordinary setting, we prove that Kobayashi's plus/minus $p$-primary Selmer groups of $E$ over $K_\infty$ have corank $1$ over $Λ$. As an applicat…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with good supersingular reduction at a prime $p\geq 3$ and $a_p=0$. We generalise the definition of Kobayashi's plus/minus Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^\infty})$ to $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ containing $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^\infty})$, using the theory of $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules and Berger's comparison isomorphisms. We show that these Selmer groups can be equally described using the "jumping conditions" of Kobayashi via the theory of overconvergent power series. Moreover, we show that such an approach gives the usual Selmer group…
Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with good supersingular reduction at all primes above $p$. We study both the classical and plus/minus Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. In particular, we give sufficient conditions for these Selmer groups to not contain a non-trivial sub-module of finite index. Furthermore, when $p$ splits completely in $F$, we calculate the Euler characteristics of the plus/minus Selmer groups over the compositum of all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $F$ when they are defined.
For a finite abelian group $(G,+)$ the Harborth constant is defined as the smallest integer $\ell$ such that each squarefree sequence over $G$ of length $\ell$ has a subsequence of length equal to the exponent of $G$ whose terms sum to $0$. The plus-minus weighted Harborth constant is defined in the same way except that the existence of a plus-minus weighted subsum equaling $0$ is required, that is, when forming the sum one can chose a sign for each term. The inverse problem associated to these constants is the problem of determining the structure of squarefree sequences of maximal length that…
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field where $p$ splits. We study signed Selmer groups for non-ordinary modular forms over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, showing that their $μ$-invariants vanish. This generalizes and gives a new proof of a recent result of Matar on the vanishing of the $μ$-invariants of plus and minus signed Selmer groups for elliptic curves.
Kurihara established a refinement of the minus-part of the Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real number fields using the higher Fitting ideals. In this paper, by using Kurihara's methods and Mazur-Rubin theory, we study the higher Fitting ideals of the plus-part of Iwasawa modules associated the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of abelian fields for an odd prime number p. We define the higher cyclotomic ideals C_i for any non-negative integer i, which are ideals of the Iwasawa algebra defined by the Kolyvagin derivative classes of circular units, and prove that they give upper and lower bounds of t…
