The ability to create dynamic, tailored optical potentials has become important across fields ranging from biology to quantum science. We demonstrate a method for the creation of arbitrary optical tweezer potentials using the broadband spectral profile of a superluminescent diode combined with the chromatic aberration of a lens. A tunable filter, typically used for ultra-fast laser pulse shaping, allows us to manipulate the broad spectral profile and therefore the optical tweezer potentials formed by focusing of this light. We characterize these potentials by measuring the Brownian motion of levitated nanoparticles in vacuum and, also demonstrate interferometric detection and feedback cooling of the particle,s motion. This simple and cost-effective technique will enable a wide range of applications and allow rapid modulation of the optical potential landscape in excess of MHz frequencies.
We propose a new method to optically levitate a macroscopic mirror with two vertical Fabry-P{é}rot cavities linearly aligned. This configuration gives the simplest possible optical levitation in which the number of laser beams used is the minimum of two. We demonstrate that reaching the standard quantum limit (SQL) of a displacement measurement with our system is feasible with current technology. The cavity geometry and the levitated mirror parameters are designed to ensure that the Brownian vibration of the mirror surface is smaller than the SQL. Our scheme provides a promising tool for testi…
Optical levitation of mechanical oscillators has been suggested as a promising way to decouple the environmental noise and increase the mechanical quality factor. Here, we investigate the dynamics of a free-standing mirror acting as the top reflector of a vertical optical cavity, designed as a testbed for a tripod cavity optical levitation setup. To reach the regime of levitation for a milligram-scale mirror, the optical intensity of the intracavity optical field approaches 3 MW cm$^{-2}$. We identify three distinct optomechanical effects: excitation of acoustic vibrations, expansion due to ph…
Optical levitation of dielectric particles in vacuum is a powerful technique for precision measurements, testing fundamental physics, and quantum information science. Conventional optical tweezers require bulky optical components for trapping and detection. Here we design and fabricate an ultrathin dielectric metalens with a high numerical aperture of 0.88 at 1064 nm in vacuum. It consists of 500 nm-thick silicon nano-antennas, which are compatible with ultrahigh vacuum. We demonstrate optical levitation of nanoparticles in vacuum with a single metalens. The trapping frequency can be tuned by …
It is known that macroscopic objects can be levitated for few to several hundred micrometers by near-field acoustic field and this phenomenon is called near-field acoustic levitation (NFAL). Although there are various experiments conducted to measure integrated acoustic pressure on the object surface, up to now there was no direct method to measure pressure distribution. In this study we measured the acoustic radiation pressure of the near-field acoustic levitation via pressure-sensitive paint.
Optically-induced magnetic resonances in non-magnetic media have unlocked magnetic light-matter interactions and led to new technologies in many research fields. Previous proposals for the levitation of nanoscale particles without structured illumination have worked on the basis of epsilon-near-zero surfaces or anisotropic materials but these carry with them significant fabrication difficulties. We report the optical levitation of a magnetic dipole over a wide range of realistic materials, including bulk metals, thereby relieving these difficulties. The repulsion is independent of surface loss…
Optical levitation of a liquid droplet in gas phase was investigated under timedependent change of the gravitational acceleration with specific flight pattern of an airplane. Through multiple trials under linear increase of effective gravitational acceleration, we performed the experiment of ptical trapping of a droplet from 0.3g_0 to 0.9g_0, where g_0 = 9.8 m/s^2. During such change of the effective gravitational acceleration, the trapping position on a droplet with the radius of 14 μm was found to be lowered by ca. 100 μm. The essential feature of the change of the trapping positio…
Levitated nanodiamonds containing nitrogen vacancy centres in high vacuum are a potential test bed for numerous phenomena in fundamental physics. However, experiments so far have been limited to low vacuum due to heating arising from optical absorption of the trapping laser. We show that milling pure diamond creates nanodiamonds that do not heat up as the optical intensity is raised above 700 GW/m$^2$ below 5 mbar of pressure. This advance now means that the level of attainable vacuum for nanodiamonds in optical dipole traps is no longer temperature limited.
Optomechanical systems are suitable for elucidating quantum phenomena at the macroscopic scale in the sense of the mass scale. The systems should be well-isolated from the environment to avoid classical noises, which conceal quantum signals. Optical levitation is a promising way to isolate optomechanical systems from the environment. To realize optical levitation, all degrees of freedom need to be trapped. Until now, longitudinal trapping and rotational trapping of a mirror with optical radiation pressure have been studied in detail and validated with various experiments. However, less attenti…
We demonstrate optical levitation of SiO$_2$ spheres with masses ranging from 0.1 to 30 nanograms. In high vacuum, we observe that the measured acceleration sensitivity improves for larger masses and obtain a sensitivity of $0.4 \times 10^{-6}\ g/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ for a 12 ng sphere, more than an order of magnitude better than previously reported for optically levitated masses. In addition, these techniques permit long integration times and a mean acceleration of $(-0.7\pm2.4\,[stat] \pm 0.2\,[syst])\times ~ 10^{-9}\,g$ is measured in $1.4\times 10^4$~s. Spheres larger than 10~ng are found t…
We demonstrate the optical levitation or trapping in helium gas of a single quantum dot (QD) within a liquid droplet. Bright single photon emission from the levitated QD in the droplet was observed for more than 200 s. The observed photon count rates are consistent with the value theoretically estimated from the two-photon-action cross section. This paper presents the realization of an optically levitated solid-state quantum emitter. This paper was published in Optics Letters and is made available as an electronic reprint with the permission of OSA. The paper can be found at the following URL …
Optically levitated nanodiamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers promise a high-quality hybrid spin-optomechanical system. However, the trapped nanodiamond absorbs energy form laser beams and causes thermal damage in vacuum. We propose to solve the problem by trapping a composite particle (a nanodiamond core coated with a less absorptive silica shell) at the center of strongly focused doughnut-shaped laser beams. Systematical study on the trapping stability, heat absorption, and oscillation frequency concludes that the azimuthally polarized Gaussian beam and the linearly polarized Laguerre-Gauss…
We demonstrate the feasibility of levitating a small mirror using only radiation pressure. In our scheme, the mirror is supported by a tripod where each leg of the tripod is a Fabry-Perot cavity. The macroscopic state of the mirror is coherently coupled to the supporting cavity modes allowing coherent interrogation and manipulation of the mirror motion. The proposed scheme is an extreme example of the optical spring, where a mechanical oscillator is isolated from the environment and its mechanical frequency and macroscopic state can be manipulated solely through optical fields. We model the st…
Light has shown up an incredibe capability in precision measurement based on opto-mechanic interaction in high vacuum by isolating environment noises. However, there are still obstructions, such as displacement and mass estimation error, highly hampering the improvement of absolute accuracy at the nanoscale. Here, we present a nonlinearity based metrology to precisely measure the position and mass of a nanoparticle with optical levitation under $10^{-5}$ mbar, 6-order of magnitude lower than the electrostatic-force and stochastic-force-based counterparts. By precisely controlling the amplitude…
Levitation optomechanics exploits the unique mechanical properties of trapped nano-objects in vacuum in order to address some of the limitations of clamped nanomechanical resonators. In particular, its performance is foreseen to contribute to a better understanding of quantum decoherence at the mesoscopic scale as well as to lead to novel ultra-sensitive sensing schemes. While most efforts have so far focused on optical trapping of low absorbing silica particles, further opportunities arise from levitating objects with internal degrees of freedom like color centers. Nevertheless, inefficient h…
The levitation of condensed matter in vacuum allows the study of its physical properties under extreme isolation from the environment. It also offers a venue to investigate quantum mechanics with large systems, at the transition between the quantum and classical worlds. In this work, we study a novel hybrid levitation platform that combines a Paul trap with a weak but highly focused laser beam, a configuration that integrates a deep potential with excellent confinement and motion detection. We combine simulations and experiments to demonstrate the potential of this approach to extend vacuum tr…
We verify the feasibility of the proposed theoretical strategy for designing the broadband near-zero permittivity (ENZ) metamaterial at optical frequency range with numerical simulations. In addition, the designed broadband ENZ stack are used as meta-atoms to build functional nanophotonic devices with extraordinary properties, including an ultranarrow electromagnetic energy tunneling channel and an ENZ concave focusing lens.
Optical technology may provide important architectures for future computing, such as analog optical computing and image processing. Compared with traditional electric operation, optical operation has shown some unique advantages including faster operating speeds and lower power consumption. Here, we propose an optical full differentiator based on the spin-orbit interaction of light at a simple optical interface. The broadband optical operation is independent on the wavelength due to the nature of purely geometric. As an important application of the fully differential operation, the broadband i…
We show that broadband optical magnetism can be achieved through incorporating multi-scaled 3D metallic meta-elements into Z-shaped nanohole arrays. The broadband effect arises from the excitation of multiple magnetic resonances in the meta-elements at different wavelengths. Moreover, the nanohole arrays exhibit a large transmission difference for left- and right-handed circularly polarized incident light due to the chiral arrangement of the meta-elements. More importantly, we have realized experimentally the broadband behavior for the optical range in Ag nanohole arrays fabricated by using a …
We derive a nonlinear envelope equation to describe the propagation of broadband optical pulses in second order nonlinear materials. The equation is first order in the propagation coordinate and is valid for arbitrarily wide pulse bandwidth. Our approach goes beyond the usual coupled wave description of $χ^{(2)}$ phenomena and provides an accurate modelling of the evolution of ultra-broadband pulses also when the separation into different coupled frequency components is not possible or not profitable.
We report a broadband diffractive optical neural network design that simultaneously processes a continuum of wavelengths generated by a temporally-incoherent broadband source to all-optically perform a specific task learned using deep learning. We experimentally validated the success of this broadband diffractive neural network architecture by designing, fabricating and testing seven different multi-layer, diffractive optical systems that transform the optical wavefront generated by a broadband THz pulse to realize (1) a series of tunable, single passband as well as dual passband spectral filt…
We propose a broadband optical diode, which is composed of one achromatic reciprocal quarter-wave plate and one non-reciprocal quarter-wave plate, both placed between two crossed polarizers. The presented design of achromatic wave plates relies on an adiabatic evolution of the Stokes vector, thus, the scheme is robust and efficient. The possible simple implementation using fiber optics is suggested.
Because of the strong inherent resonances, the giant optical activity obtained via chiral metamaterials generally suffers from high dispersion, which has been a big stumbling block to broadband applications. In this paper, we propose a type of chiral metamaterial consisting of interconnected metal helix structures with four-fold symmetry, which exhibits nonresonant Drude-like response and can therefore avoid the highly dispersive optical activity resulting from resonances. It shows that the well-designed chiral metamaterial can achieve nondispersive and pure optical activity with high transmit…
The generation of large multiphoton quantum states - for applications in computing, metrology, and simulation - requires a network of high-efficiency quantum memories capable of storing broadband pulses. Integrating these memories into a fibre offers a number of advantages towards realising this goal: strong light-matter coupling at low powers, simplified alignment, and compatibility with existing photonic architectures. Here, we introduce a large-core kagome-structured hollow-core fibre as a suitable platform for an integrated fibre-based quantum memory with a warm atomic vapour. We demonstra…
We demonastrate experimental technique for generating spatially single-mode broadband biphoton field. The method is based on dispersive optical element which precisely tailors the structure of type-I SPDC frequency angular spectrum in order to shift different spectral components to a single angular mode. Spatial mode filtering is realized by coupling biphotons into a single-mode optical fiber.
We demonstrate that a photonic gauge potential, which arises from the phase degree of freedom in dynamic refractive-index modulation and hence is achormatic, can be used to achieve a broadband optical switch using the configuration of a photonic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer (ABI). The resulting ABI switch has a far larger bandwidth and lower cross talk than the conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Using coupled-mode theory and full-wave numerical modeling, we compare the response of the two interferometers in the presence of nonidealities. Our results indicate the importance of the photon…
In recent years, the need for high-power laser is of great interest for different applications ranging from direct-laser processing, light detection, medicine, and lighting. However, high-power lasers with high intensities give rise to fundamental problems for optical detectors and imaging systems with low threshold damage, which still need reliable solutions. Here, we report and numerically demonstrate a hybrid system that synergically combines a broadband optical power limiter with a transmittance difference between on-state (70^o C) and off-state (25^o C) about 62.5%, and a diffraction-limi…
The outstanding phase-noise performance of optical frequency combs has led to a revolution in optical synthesis and metrology, covering a myriad of applications, from molecular spectroscopy to laser ranging and optical communications. However, the ideal characteristics of an optical frequency comb are application dependent. In this review, the different techniques for the generation and processing of high-repetition-rate (>10 GHz) optical frequency combs with technologies compatible with optical communication equipment are covered. Particular emphasis is put on the benefits and prospects of th…
We propose experimentally simplified schemes of an optically dispersive interface region between two coupled free electron lasers (FELs), aimed at achieving a much broader gain bandwidth than in a conventional FEL or a conventional optical klystron composed of two separated FELs. The proposed schemes can {\it universally} enhance the gain of FELs, regardless of their design when operated in the short pulsed regime.
Black phosphorous (BP), a two-dimensional (2D) material, has a direct bandgap, which fills up the bandgap lacuna left by graphene topological insulators and transition-metal dichalcogenides because of its dependence on the layers and applied strains. Theoretically, the direct and tunable band gap indicates the broadband applications in optoelectronics with high efficiencies in the spectral range from visible to mid-infrared. Here, a BP broadband optical modulator is experimentally constructed and the passively modulated lasers at 639 nm (red), 1.06 um (near-infrared) and 2.1 um (mid-infrared) …
Recently, Chumak et al. have demonstrated experimentally the time-reversal of microwave spin pulses based on non-adiabatically tuning the wave speed in a spatially-periodic manner. Here, we solve the associated wave equations analytically, and give an explicit formula for the reversal efficiency. We then discuss the implementation for short optical electromagnetic pulses and show that the new scheme may lead to their accurate time-reversal with efficiency higher than before.
Integrated optical isolators have been a longstanding challenge for photonic integrated circuits (PIC). An ideal integrated optical isolator for PIC should be made by a monolithic process, have a small footprint, exhibit broadband and polarization-diverse operation, and be compatible with multiple materials platforms. Despite significant progress, the optical isolators reported so far do not meet all these requirements. In this article we present monolithically integrated broadband magneto-optical isolators on silicon and silicon nitride (SiN) platforms operating for both TE and TM modes with …
An optical broadband angular selective filter achieved by stacking of one-dimensional photonic crystals has promising potential in various applications. In this report, we demonstrate the first experimental realization of an optical broadband angular selective filter capable of operation in air, in contrast to our previous demonstration in index matching liquid.
Impedance mismatch between free space and absorptive materials is a fundamental issue plaguing the pursue of high-efficiency light absorption. In this work, we design and numerically demonstrate a type of non-resonant impedance-matched optical metasurfaces exhibiting ultra-broadband reflectionless absorption based on anomalous Brewster effect, which are donated as optical Brewster metasurfaces here. Interestingly, such Brewster metasurfaces exhibit a unique type of extreme angular-asymmetry: a transition between perfect transparency and perfect absorption appears when the sign of the incident …
We report on the experimental realization of flat mirrors enabling the broadband generation of optical vortices upon reflection. The effect is based on the geometric Berry phase associated with the circular Bragg reflection phenomenon from chiral uniaxial media. We show the reflective optical vortex generation from both diffractive and nondiffractive paraxial light beams using spatially patterned chiral liquid crystal films. The intrinsic spectrally broadband character of spin-orbit generation of optical phase singularities is demonstrated over the full visible domain. Our results do not rely …
The recent advance in the assembly of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) has enabled sophisticated engineering of unprecedented light-matter interaction at the optical domain. In this work, I expand the design flexibility of NP optical metamaterial to push the upper limit of accessible refractive index to the unnaturally high regime. The precise control over the geometrical parameters of NP superlattice monolayer conferred the dramatic increase in electric resonance and related effective permittivity far beyond the naturally accessible regime. Simultaneously, effective permeability, another key fact…
Reflectionless potentials (RPs) represent a class of potentials that offer total transmission in the context of one dimensional scattering. Optical realization of RPs in stratified medium can exhibit broadband omnidirectional antireflection property. In addition to the antireflection property, RPs are also expected to demonstrate negative delay. We designed refractive index profiles conforming to RPs and realize them in stratified media consisting of Al2O3 and TiO2 heterolayers. In these structures we observed < 1% reflection over the broad wavelength range of 350 nm to 2500 nm for angles of i…
