Quantifying quantum coherence is a key task in the resource theory of coherence. Here we establish a good coherence monotone in terms of a state conversion process, which automatically endows the coherence monotone with an operational meaning. We show that any state can be produced from some input pure states via the corresponding incoherent channels. It is especially found that the coherence of a given state can be well characterized by the least coherence of the input pure states, so a coherence monotone is established by only effectively quantifying the input pure states. In particular, we show that our proposed coherence monotone is the supremum of all the coherence monotones that give the same coherence for any given pure state. Considering the convexity, we prove that our proposed coherence measure is a subset of the coherence measure based on the convex roof construction. As an application, we give a concrete expression of our coherence measure by employing the geometric coherence of a pure state. We also give a thorough analysis on the states of qubit and finally obtain series of analytic coherence measures.
Coherence arises from the superposition principle and plays a key role in quantum mechanics. Recently, Baumgratz et al. [T. Baumgratz, M. Cramer, and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401 (2014)] established a rigorous framework for quantifying the coherence of finite dimensional quantum states. In this work we provide a framework for quantifying the coherence of Gaussian states and explicitly give a coherence measure based on the relative entropy.
We show that contrary to the claim in Sci. Rep. 7, 15492 (2017), the quantum Fisher information itself is not a valid coherence measure based on the resource theory of coherence because it can increase via an incoherent operation.
We propose an alternative framework for quantifying coherence. The framework is based on a natural property of coherence, the additivity of coherence for subspace-independent states, which is described by an operation-independent equality rather than operation-dependent inequalities and therefore applicable to various physical contexts. Our framework is compatible with all the known results on coherence measures but much more flexible and convenient for applications, and by using it many open questions can be resolved.
We present a family of coherence quantifiers based on the generalized $α-z-$relative R$\acute{e}$nyi entropy. These quantifiers satisfy all the standard criteria for well-defined measures of coherence, and include some existing coherence measures as special cases.
We investigate the coherence measures induced by fidelity and trace norm, based on the recent proposed coherence quantification in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401, 2014]. We show that the fidelity of coherence does not in general satisfy the monotonicity requirement as a measure of coherence under the subselection of measurements condition. We find that the trace norm of coherence can act as a measure of coherence for qubit case and some special class of qutrits.
The standard quantum coherence theory is defined with respect to an orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space. Recently, Bischof, Kampermann and Bru% ß generalized the notion of coherence into the case of general measurements, and also, they established a rigorous resource theory of coherence with respect to general measurements. In this paper, we propose such a coherence measure with respect to general measurements via quantum Fisher information, and provide an application of this measure.
We introduce a rigorous framework for the quantification of coherence and identify intuitive and easily computable measures of coherence. We achieve this by adopting the viewpoint of coherence as a physical resource. By determining defining conditions for measures of coherence we identify classes of functionals that satisfy these conditions and other, at first glance natural quantities, that do not qualify as coherence measure. We conclude with an outline of the questions that remain to be answered to complete the theory of coherence as a resource.
We present an alternative framework for quantifying the coherence of quantum channels, which contains three conditions: the faithfulness, nonincreasing under sets of all the incoherent superchannels and the additivity. Based on the characteristics of the coherence of quantum channels and the additivity of independent channels, our framework provides an easier way to certify whether a function is a bona fide coherence measure of quantum channels. Detailed example is given to illustrate the effectiveness and advantages of our framework.
Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate d…
The detection and quantification of quantum coherence play significant roles in quantum information processing. We present an efficient way of tomographic witnessing for both theoretical and experimental detection of coherence. We prove that a coherence witness is optimal if and only if all of its diagonal elements are zero. Naturally, we obtain a bona fide homographic measure of coherence given by the sum of the absolute values of the real and the imaginary parts of the non-diagonal entries of a density matrix, together with its interesting relations with other coherence measures like $l_1$ n…
Coherence and entanglement are fundamental properties of quantum systems, promising to power the near future quantum computers, sensors and simulators. Yet, their experimental detection is challenging, usually requiring full reconstruction of the system state. We show that one can extract quantitative bounds to the relative entropy of coherence and the coherent information, coherence and entanglement quantifiers respectively, by a limited number of purity measurements. The scheme is readily implementable with current technology to verify quantum computations in large scale registers, without c…
Quantum coherence and non-classical correlation are key features of quantum world. Quantifying coherence and non-classical correlation are two key tasks in quantum information theory. First, we present a bona fide measure of quantum coherence by utilizing the Hellinger distance. This coherence measure is proven to fulfill all the criteria of a well defined coherence measure, including the strong monotonicity in the resource theories of quantum coherence. In terms of this coherence measure, the distribution of quantum coherence in multipartite systems is studied and a corresponding polygamy rel…
We study the quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems, especially the infinite dimensional bosonic systems in Fock space. We show that given the energy constraints, the relative entropy of coherence serves as a well-defined quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems. Via using the relative entropy of coherence, we also generalize the problem to multi-mode Fock space and special examples are considered. It is shown that with a finite average particle number, increasing the number of modes of light can enhance the relative entropy of coherence. With the mean e…
Being the key resource in quantum physics, the proper quantification of coherence is of utmost importance. Amid complex-looking functionals in quantifying coherence, we set forth a simple and easy-to-evaluate approach: Principal diagonal difference of coherence (C_PDD), which we prove to be non-negative, self-normalized, and monotonic (under any incoherent operation). To validate this theory, we thought of a fictitious two-qubit system (both interacting and non-interacting) and, through the laser pulse-system interaction (semi-classical approach), compare the coherence evolution of C_PDD with …
Quantifying entanglement is a work in progress which is important for the active field of quantum information and computation. A measure of bipartite pure state entanglement is proposed here, named entanglement coherence, which is essentially the normalized coherence of the entangled state in its Schmidt basis. Its value is 1 for maximally entangled states, and 0 for separable states, irrespective of the dimensionality of the Hilbert space. So a maximally entangled state is also the one which is maximally coherent in its Schmidt basis. Quantum entanglement and quantum coherence are thus intima…
Coherence is a fundamental ingredient in quantum physics and a key resource in quantum information processing. The quantification of quantum coherence is of great importance. We present a family of coherence quantifiers based on the Tsallis relative operator entropy. Shannon inequality and its reverse one in Hilbert space operators derived by Furuta [Linear Algebra Appl. 381 (2004) 219] are extended in terms of the parameter of the Tsallis relative operator entropy. These quantifiers are shown to satisfy all the standard criteria for a well-defined measure of coherence and include some existin…
The study of quantum coherence in condensed matter systems is a broad avenue to be explored toward the enhancement of its quantum properties by means of material engineering. In this regard, the present work reports a study of the influence of temperature, pressure and magnetic fields on the quantum coherence of a Cu(II) metal-silicate framework. We calculate the $l_1$ trace norm quantum coherence as a function of the magnetic susceptibility of the compound, which allows us to evaluate the effects of these external parameters on the degree of coherence of the material. Our results show that th…
In this work we investigate how to quantify the coherence of quantum measurements. First, we establish a resource theoretical framework to address the coherence of measurement and show that any statistical distance can be adopted to define a coherence monotone of measurement. For instance, the relative entropy fulfills all the required properties as a proper monotone. We specifically introduce a coherence monotone of measurement in terms of off-diagonal elements of Positive-Operator-Valued Measure (POVM) components. This quantification provides a lower bound on the robustness of measurement-co…

Optical cat state plays an essential role in quantum computation and quantum metrology. Here, we experimentally quantify quantum coherence of an optical cat state by means of relative entropy and l_1 norm of coherence in Fock basis based on the prepared optical cat state at rubidium D1 line. By transmitting the optical cat state through a lossy channel, we also demonstrate the robustness of quantum coherence of optical cat state in the presence of loss, which is different from the decoherence properties of fidelity and Wigner function negativity of the optical cat state. Our results confirm th…
In recent years, several measures have been proposed for characterizing the coherence of a given quantum state. We derive several results that illuminate how these measures behave when restricted to pure states. Notably, we present an explicit characterization of the closest incoherent state to a given pure state under the trace distance measure of coherence. We then use this result to show that the states maximizing the trace distance of coherence are exactly the maximally coherent states. We define the trace distance of entanglement and show that it coincides with the trace distance of coher…
Coherence is a cornerstone of quantum theory and a prerequisite for the advantage of quantum technologies. In recent work, the notion of coherence with respect to a general quantum measurement (POVM) was introduced and embedded into a resource-theoretic framework that generalizes the standard resource theory of coherence. In particular, POVM-incoherent (free) states and operations were established. In this work, we explore features of this framework which arise due to the rich structure of POVMs compared to projective measurements. Moreover, we introduce a rigorous, probabilisitic framework fo…
The unitary generation of coherence from an incoherent thermal state is investigated. We consider a completely controllable Hamiltonian allowing to generate all possible unitary transformations. Optimizing the unitary control to achieve maximum coherence leads to a micro-canonical energy distribution on the diagonal energy representation. We demonstrate such a control scenario starting from a Hamiltonian utilizing optimal control theory for unitary targets. Generating coherence from an incoherent initial state always costs external work. By constraining the amount of work invested by the contr…
We quantify the dynamical quantum resource in the resource non-increasing (RNI) framework, namely, the free dynamical resource is defined by the channels that cannot increase the static resourcefulness of any input state. We present two kinds of approaches to quantifying the dynamical resource, the distance measures and the maximal increasing static resource (MISR). As a demonstration, we quantify the dynamical total coherence with our presented measures. It is shown that the distance based measures have good operational interpretation through quantum processing tasks and can be numerically ca…
Coherent superposition and entanglement are two fundamental aspects of non-classicality. Here we provide a quantitative connection between the two on the level of operations by showing that the dynamical coherence of an operation upper bounds the dynamical entanglement that can be generated from it with the help of additional incoherent operations. In case a particular choice of monotones based on the relative entropy is used for the quantification of these dynamical resources, this bound can be achieved. In addition, we show that an analog to the entanglement potential exists on the level of …
In this paper, we detail an orthogonalization procedure that allows for the quantification of the amount of coherence present an arbitrary superposition of coherent states. The present construction is based on the quantum coherence resource theory introduced by Baumgratz et al., and the coherence resource monotone that we identify is found to characterize the nonclassicality traditionally analyzed via the Glauber-Sudarshan $P$ distribution. This suggests that identical quantum resources underlie both quantum coherence in the discrete finite dimensional case and the nonclassicality of quantum l…
To describe certain facets of non-classicality, it is necessary to quantify properties of operations instead of states. This is the case if one wants to quantify how well an operation detects non-classicality, which is a necessary prerequisite for its use in quantum technologies. To do so rigorously, we build resource theories on the level of operations, exploiting the concept of resource destroying maps. We discuss the two basic ingredients of these resource theories, the free operations and the free super-operations, which are sequential and parallel concatenations with free operations. This…
We investigate the maximally coherent states to provide a refinement in quantifying coherence and give a measure-independent definition of the coherence-preserving operations. A maximally coherent state can be considered as the resource to create arbitrary quantum states of the same dimension by merely incoherent operations. We propose that only the maximally coherent states should achieve the maximal value for a coherence measure and use this condition as an additional criterion for coherence measures to obtain a refinement in quantifying coherence which excludes the invalid and inefficient c…
Based on the nonincreasing property of quantum coherence via skew information under incoherent completely positive and trace-preserving maps, we propose a non-Markovianity measure for open quantum processes. As applications, by applying the proposed measure to some typical noisy channels, we find that it is equivalent to the three previous measures of non-Markovianity for phase damping and amplitude damping channels, i.e., the measures based on the quantum trace distance, dynamical divisibility, and quantum mutual information. For the random unitary channel, it is equivalent to the non-Markovi…
Quantum coherence is a key resource in quantum information processing scenarios, and quantifying coherence is an important task for both quantum foundation and quantum technology. However, until now, all most of coherence measures are basis-dependent that does not accord with physical reality, since the physical properties of the physical system should not be changed with the different choice of coordinate systems. Here, we propose an \textit{intrinsic basis-independent quantum coherence measure} which satisfies all conditions for quantifying coherence. This measurement not only reveals physic…
Quantum coherence with respect to orthonormal bases has been studied extensively in the past few years. Recently, Bischof, et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 110402 (2019)] generalized it to the case of general positive operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements. Such POVM-based coherence, including the block coherence as a special case, have significant operational interpretations in quantifying the advantage of quantum states in quantum information processing. In this work we first establish an alternative framework for quantifying the block coherence and provide several block coherence measures…
We examine how to signify and quantify the mesoscopic quantum coherence of approximate two-mode NOON states and spin-squeezed two-mode Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We identify two criteria that verify a nonzero quantum coherence between states with quantum number different by $n$. These criteria negate certain mixtures of quantum states, thereby signifying a generalised $n$-scopic Schrodinger cat-type paradox. The first criterion is the correlation $\langle\hat{a}^{\dagger n}\hat{b}^{n}\rangle\neq0$ (here $\hat{a}$ and $\hat{b}$ are the boson operators for each mode). The correlation manif…
One of the central problems in quantum theory is to characterize, detect, and quantify quantumness in terms of classical strategies. Dephasing processes, caused by non-dissipative information exchange between quantum systems and environments, provides a natural platform for this purpose, as they control the quantum-to-classical transition. Recently, it has been shown that dephasing dynamics itself can exhibit (non)classical traits, depending on the nature of the system-environment correlations and the related (im)possibility to simulate these dynamics with Hamiltonian ensembles---the classical…
We study the average quantum coherence over the pure state decompositions of a mixed quantum state. An upper bound of the average quantum coherence is provided and sufficient conditions for the saturation of the upper bound are shown. These sufficient conditions always hold for two and three dimensional systems. This provides a tool to estimate the average coherence experimentally by measuring only the diagonal elements, which remarkably requires less measurements compared with state tomography. We then describe the pure state decompositions of qubit state in Bloch sphere geometrically. For an…
Recently, the much-used trace distance of coherence was shown to not be a proper measure of coherence, so a modification of it was proposed. We derive an explicit formula for this modified trace distance of coherence on pure states. Our formula shows that, despite satisfying the axioms of proper coherence measures, it is likely not a good measure to use, since it is maximal (equal to 1) on all except for an exponentially-small (in the dimension of the space) fraction of pure states.
We theoretically and experimentally investigate quantum features of an interacting light-matter system from a multidisciplinary perspective, unifying approaches from semiconductor physics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. To this end, we quantify the amount of quantum coherence that results from the quantum superposition of Fock states, constituting a measure of the resourcefulness of the produced state for modern quantum protocols. As an archetypal example of a hybrid light-matter interface, we study a polariton condensate and implement a numerical model to predict its propert…
We quantify the geometric measure of entanglement in terms of mean values of observables of entangled system. For pure states we find the relation of geometric measure of entanglement with the mean value of spin one-half for the system composed of spin and arbitrary quantum system. The geometric measure of entanglement for mixed states of rank-2 is studied as well. We find the explicit expression for geometric entanglement and the relation of entanglement in this case with the values of spin correlations. These results allow to find experimentally the value of entanglement by measuring a value…
The Gram matrix of a set of quantum pure states plays key roles in quantum information theory. It has been highlighted that the Gram matrix of a pure-state ensemble can be viewed as a quantum state, and the quantumness of a pure-state ensemble can thus be quantified by the coherence of the Gram matrix [Europhys. Lett. \textbf{134} 30003]. Instead of the $l_1$-norm of coherence and the relative entropy of coherence, we utilize the generalized $α$-$z$-relative Rényi entropy of coherence of the Gram matrix to quantify the quantumness of a pure-state ensemble and explore its properties. We show th…
Quantifying entanglement is one of the most important tasks in the entanglement theory. In this paper, we establish entanglement monotones in terms of an operational approach, which is closely connected with the state conversion from pure states to the objective state by the local operations and classical communications (LOCC). It is shown that any good entanglement quantifier defined on pure states can induce an entanglement monotone for all density matrices. We especially show that our entanglement monotone is the maximal one among all that have the same form for pure states. In some particu…
The entanglement quantification and classification of multipartite quantum states are two important research fields in quantum information. In this work, we study the entanglement of arbitrary-dimensional multipartite pure states by looking at the averaged partial entropies of various bipartite partitions of the system, namely, the so-called Manhattan distance ($l_1$ norm) of averaged partial entropies (MAPE), and it is proved to be an entanglement measure for pure states. We connected the MAPE with the coefficient matrices, which are important tools in entanglement classification and reexpres…
We examine how initial coherences in open chiral systems affect distinguishability of pure versus mixed states and purity decay. Interaction between a system and an environment is modeled by a continuous position measurement and a two-level approximation is taken for the system. The resultant analytical solution is explored for various parameters, with emphasis on the interplay of initial coherences of the system and dephasing rate in determining the purity decay and differences in the time evolution of pure vs. mixed initial states. %the distinguishability and the decoherence process. Implica…
Based on a proposed coherence measure, we show that the local coherence of a bipartite quantum pure state (coherence of its reduced density matrix) is exactly the same as the minimal average co- herence with all potential pure-state realizations under consideration. In particular, it is shown that bipartite concurrence of pure states just captures the maximal difference between local coherence and the average coherence of one subsystem induced by local operations on the other subsystem with the assistance of classical communications, which provides an alternative operational meaning for bipart…
We investigate the discrimination of pure-mixed (quantum filtering) and mixed-mixed states and compare their optimal success probability with the one for discriminating other pairs of pure states superposed by the vectors included in the mixed states. We prove that under the equal-fidelity condition, the pure-pure state discrimination scheme is superior to the pure-mixed (mixed-mixed) one. With respect to quantum filtering, the coherence exists only in one pure state and is detrimental to the state discrimination for lower dimensional systems; while it is the opposite for the mixed-mixed case …
Practical measures of electronic decoherence, called distilled purities, that are applicable to many-body systems are introduced. While usual measures of electronic decoherence such as the purity employ the full $N$-particle density matrix which is generally unavailable, the distilled purities are based on the $r$-body reduced density matrices ($r$-RDMs) which are more accessible quantities. The $r$-body distilled purities are derivative quantities of the previously introduced $r$-body reduced purities [I. Franco and H. Appel, J. Chem. Phys. 139, 094109 (2013)] that measure the non-idempotency…
Neutrino oscillation represents an intriguing physical phenomenon where the quantumness can be maintained and detected over a long distance. Previously, the non-classical character of neutrino oscillation was tested with the Leggett-Garg inequality, where a clear violation of the classical bound was observed [J. A. Formaggio et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 050402 (2016)]. However, there are several limitations in testing neutrino oscillations with the Leggett-Garg inequality. In particular, the degree of violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality cannot be taken as a "measure of quantumness". Here…
Complete complementarity relations, as e.g. $P(ρ_{A})^{2} + C(ρ_{A})^{2} + E(|Ψ\rangle_{AB})^{2}=1$, constrain the local predictability, $P$, and local coherence, $C$, and the entanglement, $E$, of bipartite pure states. For pairs of qubits prepared initially in a particular class of partially entangled pure states with null local coherence, these relations were used in Ref. [Phys. Lett. A, 451, 128414 (2022)] to provide an operational connection between local predictability of the pre-measurement states with the probability of the maximally entangled components of the states after the Bell-ba…
Photonic quantum technology relies on efficient sources of coherent single photons, the ideal carriers of quantum information. Heralded single photons from parametric down-conversion can approximate on-demand single photons to a desired degree, with high spectral purities achieved through group-velocity matching and tailored crystal nonlinearities. Here we propose crystal nonlinearity engineering techniques with sub-coherence-length domains. We first introduce a combination of two existing methods: a deterministic approach with coherence-length domains and probabilistic domain-width annealing.…
Coherence is a fundamental ingredient for quantum physics and a key resource for quantum information theory. Baumgratz, Cramer, and Plenio established a rigorous framework (BCP framework) for quantifying coherence [T. Baumgratz, M. Cramer, and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 140401 (2014)]. In this paper, under the BCP framework we provide two classes of coherence measures based on the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy. We also prove that we can not get new coherence measures $f(C(\cdot))$ by a function $f$ acting on a given coherence measure $C$, except the case of qubit states.
