Quantum coherence with respect to orthonormal bases has been studied extensively in the past few years. Recently, Bischof, et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 110402 (2019)] generalized it to the case of general positive operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements. Such POVM-based coherence, including the block coherence as a special case, have significant operational interpretations in quantifying the advantage of quantum states in quantum information processing. In this work we first establish an alternative framework for quantifying the block coherence and provide several block coherence measures. We then present several coherence measures with respect to POVM measurements, and prove a conjecture on the $l_{1}$-norm related POVM coherence measure.
We investigate the average coherence with respect to a complete set of complementary measurements. By using a Wigner-Yanase skew information-based coherence measure introduced in [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{96}, 022130, 2017], we evaluate the average coherence of a state with respect to any complete set of mutually unbiased measurements and general symmetric informationally complete measurements, respectively. We also establish analytically the relations among these average coherences.
The standard quantum coherence theory is defined with respect to an orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space. Recently, Bischof, Kampermann and Bru% ß generalized the notion of coherence into the case of general measurements, and also, they established a rigorous resource theory of coherence with respect to general measurements. In this paper, we propose such a coherence measure with respect to general measurements via quantum Fisher information, and provide an application of this measure.
The concept of quantum coherence, including various ways to quantify the degree of coherence with respect to the prescribed basis, is currently the subject of active research. The complementarity of quantum coherence in different bases was studied by deriving upper bounds on the sum of the corresponding measures. To obtain a two-sided estimate, lower bounds on the coherence quantifiers are also of interest. Such bounds are naturally referred to as uncertainty relations for quantum coherence. We obtain new uncertainty relations for coherence quantifiers averaged with respect to a set of mutuall…
Coherence is a cornerstone of quantum theory and a prerequisite for the advantage of quantum technologies. In recent work, the notion of coherence with respect to a general quantum measurement (POVM) was introduced and embedded into a resource-theoretic framework that generalizes the standard resource theory of coherence. In particular, POVM-incoherent (free) states and operations were established. In this work, we explore features of this framework which arise due to the rich structure of POVMs compared to projective measurements. Moreover, we introduce a rigorous, probabilisitic framework fo…
The concept of quantum coherence and its possible use as a resource are currently the subject of active researches. Uncertainty and complementarity relations for quantum coherence allow one to study its changes with respect to other characteristics of the process of interest. Protocols of quantum information processing often use measurements that have a special inner structure. Quantum designs are considered as tools with a perspective of fruitful applications in quantum information processing. We obtain uncertainty and certainty relations for coherence averaged with respect to a set of design…
The conventional coherence is defined with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis, i.e., to a von Neumann measurement. Recently, generalized quantum coherence with respect to general positive operator-valued measurements (POVMs) has been presented. Several well-defined coherence measures, such as the relative entropy of coherence $C_{r}$, the $l_{1}$ norm of coherence $C_{l_{1}}$ and the coherence $C_{T,α}$ based on Tsallis relative entropy with respect to general POVMs have been obtained. In this work, we investigate the properties of $C_{r}$, $l_{1}$ and $C_{T,α}$. We estimate the upper bounds…
We mainly study the block-coherence measures based on resource theory of block-coherence and the coherence measures based on positive-operator-valued measures (POVM). Several block-coherence measures including a block-coherence measure based on maximum relative entropy, the one-shot block coherence cost under the maximally block-incoherent operations, and a coherence measure based on coherent rank have been introduced and the relationships between these block-coherence measures have been obtained. We also give the definition of the maximally block-coherent state and describe the deterministic …
In this paper, we examine the superadditivity of convex roof coherence measures. We put forward a theorem on the superadditivity of convex roof coherence measures, which provides a sufficient condition to identify the convex roof coherence measures fulfilling the superadditivity. By applying the theorem to each of the known convex roof coherence measures, we prove that the coherence of formation and the coherence concurrence are superadditive, while the geometric measure of coherence, the convex roof coherence measure based on linear entropy, the convex roof coherence measure based on fidelity…
Quantum coherence is an essential resource for quantum information processing and various quantitative measures of it have been introduced. However, the interconnections between these measures are not yet understood properly. Here, using a large set of randomly prepared $X$ states and analytically obtained expressions of various measures of coherence (e.g., relative entropy of coherence, $l1$ norm of coherence, coherence via skew information, and first-order coherence), it is established that these measures of quantum coherence cannot be used to perform ordering of a set of quantum states base…
Coherence measures and their operational interpretations lay the cornerstone of coherence theory. In this paper, we introduce a class of coherence measures with $α$-affinity, say $α$-affinity of coherence for $α\in (0, 1)$. Furthermore, we obtain the analytic formulae for these coherence measures and study their corresponding convex roof extension. We provide an operational interpretation for $1/2$-affinity of coherence by showing that it is equal to the error probability to discrimination a set of pure states with the least square measurement. Employing this relationship we regain the optimal…
Quantum coherence is one of the most significant theories in quantum physics. Ordering states with various coherence measures is an intriguing task in quantification theory of coherence. In this paper, we study this problem by use of four important coherence measures -- the $l_1$ norm of coherence, the relative entropy of coherence, the geometric measure of coherence and the modified trace distance measure of coherence. We show that each pair of these measures give a different ordering of qudit states when $d\geq 3$. However, for single-qubit states, the $l_1$ norm of coherence and the geometr…
The quantification of quantum coherence has attracted a growing attention, and based on various physical contexts, several coherence measures have been put forward. An interesting question is whether these coherence measures give the same ordering when they are used to quantify the coherence of quantum states. In this paper, we consider the two well-known coherence measures, the $l_1$ norm of coherence and the relative entropy of coherence, to show that there are the states for which the two measures give a different ordering. Our analysis can be extended to other coherence measures, and as an…
One of the fundamental features of quantum mechanics is the superposition principle, a manifestation of which is embodied in quantum coherence. Coherence of a quantum state is invariably defined with respect to a preferred set of pointer states, and there exist quantum coherence measures with respect to deterministically as well as probabilistically distinguishable sets of quantum state vectors. Here we study the resource theory of quantum coherence with respect to an arbitrary set of quantum state vectors, that may not even be probabilistically distinguishable. Geometrically, a probabilistica…
We introduce a measure of coherence, which is extended from the coherence rank via the standard convex roof construction, we call it the logarithmic coherence number. This approach is parallel to the Schmidt measure in entanglement theory, We study some interesting properties of the logarithmic coherence number, and show that this quantifier can be considered as a proper coherence measure. We also find that the logarithmic coherence number can be calculated exactly for a large class of states. We give the relationship between coherence and entanglement in bipartite system, and our results are …
We provide a general construction of convex roof measures of coherence. This construction is based on arbitrary coherence measures of pure states in the framework of resource theory of coherence. Convex roof measures of coherence bound from above all possible coherence measures, given specific valid quantifications of pure states.
Based on the theory of quantum mechanics, intrinsic randomness in measurement distinguishes quantum effects from classical ones. From the perspective of states, this quantum feature can be summarized as coherence or superposition in a specific (classical) computational basis. Recently, by regarding coherence as a physical resource, Baumgratz et al.~present a comprehensive framework for coherence measures. Here, we propose a quantum coherence measure essentially using the intrinsic randomness of measurement. The proposed coherence measure provides an answer to the open question in completing th…
We investigate the modified trace distance measure of coherence recently introduced in [Phys. Rev. A 94, 060302(R) (2016)]. We show that for any single-qubit state, the modified trace norm of coherence is equal to the $l_{1}$-norm of coherence. For any $d$-dimensional quantum system, an analytical formula of this measure for a class of maximally coherent mixed states is provided. The trade-off relation between the coherence quantified by the new measure and the mixedness quantified by the trace norm is also discussed. Furthermore, we explore the relation between the modified trace distance mea…
The manipulation of quantum coherence is one of the principal issues in the resource theory of coherence, with two critical topics being the purification and enhancement of coherence. Here, we present two no-go theorems for the deterministic purification of coherence and the probabilistic enhancement of coherence, respectively. Specifically, we prove that a quantum state cannot be deterministically purified if it can be expressed as a convex combination of an incoherent state and a coherent state. Besides, we give an easy-to-verified sufficient and necessary condition to determine whether a st…
In this paper, by minimizing the coherence quantifiers over all states in an $ε$ ball around a given state, we define a generalized smooth quantifier, called the $ε$-smooth measure of coherence. We use it to estimate the difference between the expected state and the actually prepared state and quantify quantum coherence contained in an actually prepared state, and it can been interpreted as the minimal coherence guaranteed to present in an $ε$ ball around given quantum state. We find that the $ε$-smooth measure of any coherence monotone is still a coherence monotone, but it does not satisfy mo…
Quantifying coherence has received increasing attention, and considerable work has been directed towards finding coherence measures. While various coherence measures have been proposed in theory, an important issue following is how to estimate these coherence measures in experiments. This is a challenging task, since the state of a system is often unknown in practical applications and the accessible measurements in a real experiment are typically limited. In this Letter, we put forward an approach to estimate coherence measures of an unknown state from any limited experimental data available. …
We define the coherence non-activating measurement as the positive operator-valued measurement which gives the same result whether or not the coherence in a quantum state is destroyed. A connection is built between the coherence activating ability of a measurement and its ability to steer quantum states when coherence non-activating measurement is free. Then we study the quantum discord based on coherence non-activating measurement and its behavior under local incoherent operations. Our results contribute to the study of resource non-activating condition, which is a complementary to the well-s…
Quantum coherence is a key resource in quantum information processing scenarios, and quantifying coherence is an important task for both quantum foundation and quantum technology. However, until now, all most of coherence measures are basis-dependent that does not accord with physical reality, since the physical properties of the physical system should not be changed with the different choice of coordinate systems. Here, we propose an \textit{intrinsic basis-independent quantum coherence measure} which satisfies all conditions for quantifying coherence. This measurement not only reveals physic…
In this work we investigate how to quantify the coherence of quantum measurements. First, we establish a resource theoretical framework to address the coherence of measurement and show that any statistical distance can be adopted to define a coherence monotone of measurement. For instance, the relative entropy fulfills all the required properties as a proper monotone. We specifically introduce a coherence monotone of measurement in terms of off-diagonal elements of Positive-Operator-Valued Measure (POVM) components. This quantification provides a lower bound on the robustness of measurement-co…
Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate d…
Quantifying coherence is a key task in both quantum mechanical theory and practical applications. Here, a reliable quantum coherence measure is presented by utilizing the quantum skew information of the state of interest subject to a certain broken observable. This coherence measure is proven to fulfill all the criteria (especially the strong monotonicity) recently introduced in the resource theories of quantum coherence. The coherence measure has an analytic expression and an obvious operational meaning related to quantum metrology. In terms of this coherence measure, the distribution of the …
We present a direct measurement of the spatiotemporal coherence of parametric down-conversion in the range of negative group-velocity dispersion. In this case, the frequency-angular spectra are ring-shaped and temporal coherence is coupled to spatial coherence. Correspondingly, the lack of coherence due to spatial displacement can be compensated with the introduction of time delay. We show a simple technique, based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which allowed us to measure time coherence and near-field space coherence simultaneously, with complete control of both variables. This te…
Coherence, the superposition of orthogonal quantum states, is indispensable in various quantum processes. Inspired by the polynomial invariant for classifying and quantifying entanglement, we first define polynomial coherence measure and systematically investigate its properties. Except for the qubit case, we show that there is no polynomial coherence measure satisfying the criterion that its value takes zero if and only if for incoherent states. Then, we release this strict criterion and obtain a necessary condition for polynomial coherence measure. Furthermore, we give a typical example of p…
We establish a general operational one-to-one mapping between coherence measures and entanglement measures: Any entanglement measure of bipartite pure states is the minimum of a suitable coherence measure over product bases. Any coherence measure of pure states, with extension to mixed states by convex roof, is the maximum entanglement generated by incoherent operations acting on the system and an incoherent ancilla. Remarkably, the generalized CNOT gate is the universal optimal incoherent operation. In this way, all convex-roof coherence measures, including the coherence of formation, are end…
Quantum measurement is a class of quantum channels that sends quantum states to classical states. We set up resource theories of quantum coherence and quantum entanglement for quantum measurements and find relations between them. For this, we conceive a relative entropy type quantity to account for the quantum resources of quantum measurements. The quantum coherence of a quantum measurement can be converted into the entanglement in a bipartite quantum measurement through coherence-non generating transformations. Conversely, a quantum entanglement monotone of quantum measurements induces a quan…
Coherence is a fundamental ingredient for quantum physics and a key resource for quantum information theory. Baumgratz, Cramer, and Plenio established a rigorous framework (BCP framework) for quantifying coherence [T. Baumgratz, M. Cramer, and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 140401 (2014)]. In this paper, under the BCP framework we provide two classes of coherence measures based on the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy. We also prove that we can not get new coherence measures $f(C(\cdot))$ by a function $f$ acting on a given coherence measure $C$, except the case of qubit states.
Quantum measurement not only can destroy coherence but also can create it. Here, we estimate the maximum amount of coherence, one can create under a complete non-selective measurement process. For our analysis, we consider projective as well as POVM measurements. Based on our observations, we characterize the measurement processes into two categories, namely, the measurements with the ability to induce coherence and the ones without this ability. Our findings also suggest that the more POVM elements present in a measurement that acts on the quantum system, the less will be its coherence creati…
Coherence is the most fundamental quantum feature in quantum mechanics. For a bipartite quantum state, if a measurement is performed on one party, the other party, based on the measurement outcomes, will collapse to a corresponding state with some probability and hence gain the average coherence. It is shown that the average coherence is not less than the coherence of its reduced density matrix. In particular, it is very surprising that the extra average coherence (and the maximal extra average coherence with all the possible measurements taken into account) is upper bounded by the classical c…
We find that all measures of coherence are frozen for an initial state in a strictly incoherent channel if and only if the relative entropy of coherence is frozen for the state. Our finding reveals the existence of measure-independent freezing of coherence, and provides an entropy-based dynamical condition in which the coherence of an open quantum system is totally unaffected by noise.
Quantum coherence and non-Markovianity of an atom in dissipative cavity under weak measurement are investigated in this work. We find that, the quantum coherence obviously depends on the atomic initial state, the strength of the weak measurement and its reversal, the atom-cavity coupling constant and the non-Markovian effecct. The more obvious the weak measurement effect is, the better the protection of coherence is. The quantum coherence is preserved more efficiently for lager the atom-cavity coupling. The stronger the non-Markovian effect, the more slowly the coherence reduces. This is, the …
Coherence and correlation are key features of the quantum system. Quantifying these quantities are astounding task in the framework of resource theory of quantum information processing. In this article, we identify an affinity-based metric to quantify closeness between two states. Using this metric, we introduce a valid quantum coherence measure. It is shown that the affinity based coherence measure is bounded by that based on fidelity and trace distance. Further, we propose a bipartite quantum correlation measure based on the affinity metric. The connection between the quantum correlation of …
We provide a theory independent framework to quantify coherence. In comparison with Bell's theory independent approach to quantum nonlocality, we characterize a general coherence phenomenon with statistics arising from sequential measurements of observables that might not be compatible. By introducing a "decohered" state after the sharp measurement of some preferred observable, we quantify coherence by either the difference of initial "superposed" state from the "decohered" state or the measurement outcome deviations when they subjected to further measurements. Applied to quantum mechanics, th…
Recently, trace distance measure of coherence has been proposed for characterizing the coherence of a given quantum state. However, it seems difficult to estimate the optimal incoherent state for high dimensional states. An explicit expression for the trace distance measure of coherence for a class of qudit states is provided. We show that the closest incoherent state to the class of qudit states is just the diagonal matrix obtained from it by deleting all off-diagonal elements. It is also shown that the measure of coherence induced by trace distance can act as a measure of coherence for this …
Coherence is a fundamental resource in quantum information processing, which can be certified by a coherence witness. Due to the imperfection of measurement devices, a conventional coherence witness may lead to fallacious results. We show that the conventional witness could mistake an incoherent state as a state with coherence due to the inaccurate settings of measurement bases. In order to make the witness result reliable, we propose a measurement-device-independent coherence witness scheme without any assumptions on the measurement settings. We introduce the decoy-state method to significant…
Coherence of a quantum state intrinsically depends on the choice of the reference basis. A natural question to ask is the following: if we use two or more incompatible reference bases, can~there be some trade-off relation between the coherence measures in different reference bases? We show that the quantum coherence of a state as quantified by the relative entropy of coherence in two or more noncommuting reference bases respects uncertainty like relations for a given state of single and bipartite quantum systems. In the case of bipartite systems, we find that the presence of entanglement may t…
We investigate the coherence measures induced by fidelity and trace norm, based on the recent proposed coherence quantification in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401, 2014]. We show that the fidelity of coherence does not in general satisfy the monotonicity requirement as a measure of coherence under the subselection of measurements condition. We find that the trace norm of coherence can act as a measure of coherence for qubit case and some special class of qutrits.
Quantum coherence is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics and an underlying requirement for most quantum information tasks. In the resource theory of coherence, incoherent states are diagonal with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis, i.e., they can be seen as arising from a von Neumann measurement. Here, we introduce and study a generalization to a resource theory of coherence defined with respect to the most general quantum measurement, i.e., to an arbitrary positive-operator-valued measure (POVM). We establish POVM-based coherence measures and POVM-incoherent operations which coincide…
The effects of the measurement apparatus on quantum coherence are studied by considering a purely dephasing model of a qubit. The initial state is prepared from a thermal state of the whole system by performing a nonselective measurement on the qubit. The magnitude of the initial postmeasurement coherence is bounded by the value $1/2$, which is realized with special measurement schemes and in the low-temperature limit. The magnitude of coherence identically vanishes, increases or decreases with approximately constant velocity over a determined short time scale, according to the choice of the p…
Quantum coherence is a fundamental manifestation of the quantum superposition principle. Recently, Baumgratz \emph{et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 140401 (2014)] presented a rigorous framework to quantify coherence from the view of theory of physical resource. Here we propose a new valid quantum coherence measure which is a convex roof measure, for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, essentially using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. Rigorous proof shows that the proposed coherence measure fulfills all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence measur…
The peculiar uncertainty or randomness of quantum measurements stems from coherence, whose information-theoretic characterization is currently under investigation. Under the resource theory of coherence, it is interesting to investigate interpretations of coherence measures and the interplay with other quantum properties, such as quantum correlations and intrinsic randomness. Coherence can be viewed as the resource for the intrinsic randomness in the measurement outcomes of a state in the computational basis. We observed in our previous work that the coherence of formation, which measures the …
We investigate the maximally coherent states to provide a refinement in quantifying coherence and give a measure-independent definition of the coherence-preserving operations. A maximally coherent state can be considered as the resource to create arbitrary quantum states of the same dimension by merely incoherent operations. We propose that only the maximally coherent states should achieve the maximal value for a coherence measure and use this condition as an additional criterion for coherence measures to obtain a refinement in quantifying coherence which excludes the invalid and inefficient c…
We study the geometric measure of quantum coherence recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 020403 (2015)]. Both lower and upper bounds of this measure are provided. These bounds are shown to be tight for a class of important coherent states -- maximally coherent mixed states. The trade-off relation between quantum coherence and mixedness for this measure is also discussed.
Since a rigorous framework for quantifying quantum coherence was established by Baumgratz et al. [T. Baumgratz, M. Cramer, and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401 (2014)], many coherence measures have been found. For a given coherence measure $C$, extending the values of $C$ on pure states to mixed states by the convex roof construction, we will get a valid coherence measure $\overline{C}$, we call $\overline{C}$ the corresponding convex roof quantifier of $C$. Whether $C=\overline{C}$ for a given coherence measure is an important question. In this work, we show that for the widely used…
