THz spectroscopy is an emerging tool for detection of microorganisms and harmful compounds in the food industry, the study of proteins in biomedicine and the development of electron-beam X-ray sources for molecular imaging and lithography. Recording of THz electric field evolution in single-shot is crucially needed in terahertz spectroscopy of irreversible processes in such applications as well as for data communication in the THz portion of the spectrum where there is an abundance of untapped bandwidth. However, achieving sub-picosecond resolution over a long time window has been an open problem for electro-optic sampling -- the standard technique for recording terahertz waveforms. We introduce a new conceptual framework for this open problem that is inspired by time-stretch theory. The novel framework unveils a solution to this 20 year-old problem leading to a dramatic enhancement of the achievable temporal resolution. We validate this new technology in two applications. First, we present single shot recordings of long free-propagating terahertz transients with record time resolution. Second, we present recordings of ultra-short relativistic electron bunches at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser. These results show that electric signals may be now recorded with terahertz bandwidth over arbitrarily long windows, thus enabling the realization of "single-shot terahertz oscilloscopes" and single-shot time-domain spectroscopy systems with an arbitrary time-bandwidth product.
Single-shot recording of terahertz electric signals has recently become possible at high repetition rates, by using the photonic time-stretch electro-optic sampling (EOS) technique. However the moderate sensitivity of time-stretch EOS is still a strong limit for a range of applications. Here we present a variant enabling to increase the sensitivity of photonic time-stretch for free-propagating THz signals. A key point is to integrate the idea presented in Ref. [Ahmed et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 85, 013114 (2014)], for upgrading classical time-stretch systems. The method is tested using the high…
Ferroelectric materials offer unprecedented ultrafast responses and are of great interest for the development of new polarizable media under the influence of an electromagnetic field. Recent research efforts have demonstrated the role of optical excitation and intense terahertz (THz) pulses in inducing a polar order and revealing a hidden phase transition in SrTiO3 (STO), respectively. Here we show that the surface of STO crystals at room temperature act as ultrafast sensors that enable sub-picosecond switching through the Kerr effect and multi-ps recording of polar THz intensity with spatial …
We demonstrate a terahertz (THz) frequency comb that is flexible in terms of its frequency range and the number and spacing of comb lines. We use a combination of near-infrared laser diodes, phase modulation and opto-electronic frequency conversion. The THz comb lines are characterized to be < 10 MHz by resolving the pressure dependent collisional broadening of an ammonia molecule rotational mode.
In ultrabroadband terahertz electro-optic sampling, spectral filtering of the gate pulse can strongly reduce the quantum noise while the signal level is only weakly affected. The concept is tested for phase-matched electro-optic detection of field transients centered at 45 THz with 12-fs near-infrared gate pulses in AgGaS2. Our new approach increases the experimental signal-to-noise ratio by a factor of 3 compared to standard electro-optic sampling. Under certain conditions an improvement factor larger than 5 is predicted by our theoretical analysis.
A vacuum autoresonance accelerator scheme for electrons, which employs terahertz radiation and currently available magnetic fields, is suggested. Based on numerical simulations, parameter values, which could make the scheme experimentally feasible, are identified and discussed.
We introduce a general technique to generate compressed broadband terahertz pulses based on difference frequency generation of optical pump radiation using aperiodically poled structures. The pump pulse format and poling of the crystals conceived are such that the emergent terahertz pulse is compressed. The approach circumvents pump pulse distortions that result from non-collinear approaches and the need for external compression. It is particularly efficient for the generation of pulses of intermediate durations of few to tens of cycles. For instance, conversion efficiencies in the few percent…
Shaping electron beams with the cycles of light provides femtosecond and attosecond time resolution in electron microscopy and enables fundamental quantum-coherent measurements. However, efficient light-electron control requires a prolonged interaction between the two beams for cascaded transfer of photon energy and momentum to the freely propagating electrons. Here we report the use of traveling evanescent terahertz waves to achieve velocity matching and thereby high acceleration gradients both in space and in time. With experiment and simulations, we demonstrate attosecond streaking, tempora…
We propose and experimentally prove efficient high-resolution electro-optic sampling measurement of broadband terahertz waveforms in a LiNbO$_3$ crystal in the configuration with the probe laser beam propagating along the optical axis of the crystal. This configuration allows one to avoid the detrimental effect of strong intrinsic birefringence of LiNbO$_3$ without any additional optical elements. To achieve velocity matching of the terahertz wave and the probe beam, the terahertz wave is introduced into the crystal through a Si prism at the Cherenkov angle to the probe beam. The workability o…
A novel mechanism to realize dynamically tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue in the terahertz (THz) regime is proposed. By putting the electrically controllable monolayer graphene under the dark resonator, the amplitude of the EIT resonance in the metal-based metamaterial can be modulated substantially via altering the Fermi level of graphene. The amplitude modulation can be attributed to the change in the damping rate of the dark mode caused by the recombination effect of the conductive graphene. This work provides an alternative way to achieve tunable slow light e…
Arising from modulation instability, Turing rolls in optical Kerr microresonators have been used in the generation of optical frequency combs and the synthesis of microwave and terahertz frequencies. In this work, by applying electro-optic modulation on terahertz-frequency Turing rolls, we implement electro-optic frequency division with a microcomb to synthesize variable low-noise microwave signals. We also actively stabilize the terahertz oscillations to a microwave reference via intracavity power modulation, obtaining fractional frequency instabilities that are better than those of the free-…
With ever increasing availability of terahertz fields, it is important to find suitable detection techniques without compromising the measured dynamic range. Electro-optic terahertz sampling techniques, which are commonly used to detect terahertz fields, exhibit over-rotation at high fields that limit the detection accuracy. Here we discuss a method to correct for over-rotation that put no limits on measured terahertz field strengths, while preserving the low field sensitivity. We further evaluate the induced polarizations at high terahertz fields and show how over-rotation can be corrected by…
We investigate the ultrafast electron dynamics triggered by terahertz and optical pulses in thin platinum and gold films by probing their transient optical reflectivity. The response of the platinum film to an intense terahertz pulse is similar to the optically-induced dynamics of both films and can be described by a two-temperature model. Surprisingly, gold can exhibit a much smaller terahertz pulse-induced reflectivity change and with opposite sign. For platinum, we estimate a 20% larger electron-phonon coupling for the terahertz-driven dynamics compared to the optically-induced one, which w…
Terahertz (THz)-based electron manipulation has recently been shown to hold tremendous promise as a technology for manipulating and driving the next-generation of compact ultrafast electron sources. Here, we demonstrate an ultrafast electron diffractometer with THz-driven pulse compression. The electron bunches from a conventional DC gun are compressed by a factor of 10 and reach a duration of ~180 fs (FWHM) with 10,000 electrons/pulse at a 1 kHz repetition rate. The resulting ultrafast electron source is used in a proof-of-principle experiment to probe the photoinduced dynamics of single-crys…
We study ultrafast magnetization quenching of ferromagnetic iron following excitation by an optical vs a terahertz pump pulse. While the optical pump (photon energy of 3.1 eV) induces a strongly nonthermal electron distribution, terahertz excitation (~4 meV) results in a quasi-thermal perturbation of the electron population. The pump-induced spin and electron dynamics are interrogated by the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). A deconvolution procedure allows us to push the time resolution down to 130 fs, even though the driving terahertz pulse is more than 0.5 ps long. Remarkably, the MOKE sign…
The metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in terahertz (THz) regime holds fascinating prospects for filling the THz gap in various functional devices. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid metamaterial to actively manipulate the resonance strength of EIT effect. By integrating a monolayer graphene into a THz metal metamaterial, an on-to-off modulation of the EIT transparency window is achieved under different Fermi levels of graphene. According to the classical two-particle model and the distributions of the electric field and surface charge density, the ph…
We experimentally demonstrate at terahertz frequencies that a planar metamaterial exhibits a spectral response resembling electromagnetically induced transparency. The metamaterial unit cell consists of a split ring surrounded by another closed ring where their dimensions are such that their excitable lowest order modes have identical resonance frequencies but very different life times. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy verifies that the interference of these two resonances results in a narrow transparency window located within a broad opaque region. In contrast to previous studies this enhan…
We demonstrate a coherent imaging system based on a terahertz (THz) frequency quantum cascade laser (QCL) phase-locked to a near-infrared fs-laser comb. The phase locking enables coherent electro-optic sampling of the continuous-wave radiation emitted by the QCL through the generation of a heterodyne beat-note signal. We use this beat-note signal to demonstrate raster scan coherent imaging using a QCL emitting at 2.5 THz. At this frequency the detection noise floor of our system is of 3 pW/Hz and the long-term phase stability is <3 degrees/h, limited by the mechanical stability of the apparatu…
Terahertz time domain spectroscopy employing free-space radiation has frequently been used to probe the elementary excitations of low-dimensional systems. The diffraction limit blocks its use for the in-plane study of individual laterally defined nanostructures, however. Here, we demonstrate a planar terahertz-frequency plasmonic circuit in which photoconductive material is monolithically integrated with a two-dimensional electron system. Plasmons with a broad spectral range (up to ~400 GHz) are excited by injecting picosecond-duration pulses, generated and detected by a photoconductive semico…
The surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) switch is the key element of the integrated devices in optical computation and terahertz (THz) communications. In this paper, we propose a novel design of THz SPPs switch based on quantum engineering. Due to the robustness of coherent quantum control technique, our switch is very robust against with perturbations of geometrical parameters and presents a good performance at on-state (and off-state) from 0.5 THz to 0.7 THz. The on-state and off-state of our device can be controlled by the external voltage. We believe this finding will be the great improvemen…
An undoped double quantum well (DQW) was driven with a terahertz (THz) electric field of frequency ω_{THz} polarized in the growth direction, while simultaneously illuminated with a near-infrared (NIR) laser at frequency ω_{NIR}. The intensity of NIR upconverted sidebands ω_{sideband}=ω_{NIR} + ω_{THz} was maximized when a dc voltage applied in the growth direction tuned the excitonic states into resonance with both the THz and NIR fields. There was no detectable upconversion far from resonance. The results demonstrate the possibility of using gated DQW devices for all-optical wavelength shift…
We use intense terahertz pulses to excite the resonant mode (0.6 THz) of a micro-fabricated dipole antenna with a vacuum gap. The dipole antenna structure enhances the peak amplitude of the in-gap THz electric field by a factor of ~170. Above an in-gap E-field threshold amplitude of ~10 MVcm-1, THz-induced field electron emission is observed (TIFEE) as indicated by the field-induced electric current across the dipole antenna gap. Field emission occurs within a fraction of the driving THz period. Our analysis of the current (I) and incident electric field (E) is in agreement with a Millikan-Lau…
Ultrashort electron bunches are useful for applications like ultrafast imaging and coherent radiation production. Currently, however, the shortest achievable bunches, at attosecond time scales, have only been realized in the single or very few electron regime, limited by Coulomb repulsion and electron energy spread. Using ab initio simulations and theoretical analysis, we show that highly-charged bunches are achievable by subjecting relativistic (few MeV-scale) electrons to a superposition of terahertz and optical pulses. Using realistic electron bunches and laser pulse parameters which are wi…
The quasi-optical segmented mirror for a formation of the target irradiation field was manufactured and investigated. It was designed for the high power THz beam of the free electron laser (FEL) using as a target a dust particle cloud, simulating cosmic dust. Numerical calculation of the beam shape and its low power laboratory measurements was made in the spectral region 1 - 3 THz of the first phase of the Novosibirsk FEL construction. The theoretical calculations of the diffraction effects reveal a speckle structure of a target spot, which was confirmed by the laboratory experiment. The beamf…
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems based on resonator-internal repetition-rate modulation, such as SLAPCOPS [12] and ECOPS [11], rely on electronic phase detectors which are typically prone to exhibit both a non-negligible random and systematic timing error. This limits the quality of the recorded information significantly. Here, we present the results of our recent attempt to reduce these errors in our own electronic phase detection systems. A more than six-fold timing-jitter reduction from 59.0 fs to 8.6 fs led to a significant increase in both exploitable terahertz bandwidth and sig…
We have performed terahertz time-domain magnetospectroscopy by combining a rapid scanning terahertz time-domain spectrometer based on the electronically coupled optical sampling method with a table-top mini-coil pulsed magnet capable of producing magnetic fields up to 30 T. We demonstrate the capability of this system by measuring coherent cyclotron resonance oscillations in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs and interference-induced terahertz transmittance modifications in a magnetoplasma in lightly doped n-InSb.
We measured a change in the current transport of an antenna-coupled, multi-gate, GaAs/AlGaAs field-effect transistor when terahertz electromagnetic waves irradiated the transistor and attribute the change to bolometric heating of the electrons in the two-dimensional electron channel. The observed terahertz absorption spectrum indicates coherence between plasmons excited under adjacent biased device gates. The experimental results agree quantitatively with a theoretical model we developed that is based on a generalized plasmonic transmission line formalism and describes an evolution of the plas…
The generation of single-cycle attosecond pulses based on Thomson scattering of terahertz (THz) pulses is proposed. In the scheme, a high-quality relativistic electron beam produced by a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator (LPWA), is sent through suitable magnetic devices to produce ultrathin electron layers for coherent Thomson backscattering of intense THz pulses. According to numerical simulations, single-cycle attosecond pulse generation is possible with up to 1 nJ energy. The waveform of the attosecond pulses closely resembles that of the THz pulses. This allows for a flexible waveform con…
Ultrashort photoemitted electron bunches can provide high electron currents within sub-picosecond timeframes, enabling time-resolved investigations of ultrafast physical processes with nanoscale resolution. Non-resonant conductive nanotips are typically employed to realize nanoscale photoelectron sources with high brightness. However, such emitters require complex non-scalable fabrication procedures featuring poor reproducibility. Planar resonant antennas fabricated via photolithography have been recently investigated, also because of their superior field enhancement properties. Nevertheless, …
Spontaneous optical emission of graphene irradiated by intense single-cycle terahertz pulses was investigated experimentally and explained theoretically. We found that emitted photons are polarized predominantly perpendicular to the electric field of the terahertz pulse, which proves that the terahertz field not only heats the electrons, but also creates a strongly nonequilibrium momentum distribution. Comparison of the measured optical spectrum and polarization anisotropy with the results of numerical modeling allowed us to estimate a momentum isotropization time for electrons in graphene to …
Optical properties of metallic nanoparticles are most often considered in terms of plasmons, the coupled states of light and quasi-free electrons. Here we predict that confinement of electrons inside the nanostructure leads to another, very different, type of resonance, which determines the optical properties in the frequency range significantly below the plasmonic resonance. We demonstrate that closely placed confinement-induces resonances typically join into a single composite "super-resonance" which produces giant nonlinearity at low frequencies. Our simulations show how such nonlinearities…
We demonstrate the electromagnetic performance of waveguides for femtosecond electron beam bunch manipulation and compression with strong-field terahertz (THz) pulses. The compressor structure is a dispersion-free exponentially-tapered parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) that can focus single-cycle THz pulses along one dimension. We show test results of the tapered PPWG structure using electro-optic sampling (EOS) at the interaction region with peak fields of at least 300 kV/cm given 0.9 uJ of incoming THz energy. We also present a modified shorted design of the tapered PPWG for better beam manipu…
The terahertz (THz) generation in a dual-color field was investigated experimentally by precisely controlling the relative time delay $τ$ and polarization $θ$ of dual-color lasers, where the accompanying third-harmonic generation (THG) is employed to determine $τ$ up to the sub-wavelength accuracy. An anticorrelation of the yields between THz and THG with $τ$ was displayed. Compared with the theoretical simulations, the experimental results reveal that the continuum-continuum transitions of the released electron after single-atom ionization are the dominating mechanism for THz generation, whic…
Due to its high electrical conductivity and excellent transmittance at terahertz frequencies, graphene is a promising candidate as transparent electrodes for terahertz devices. We demonstrate a liquid crystal based terahertz phase shifter with the graphene films as transparent electrodes. The maximum phase shift is 10.8 degree and the saturation voltage is 5 V with a 50 um liquid crystal cell. The transmittance at terahertz frequencies and electrical conductivity depending on the number of graphene layer are also investigated. The proposed phase shifter provides a continuous tunability, fully …
The photoelectric effect consists in the photoexcitation of electrons above a potential barrier at a material interface and is exploited for photodetection over a wide frequency range. This three-dimensional process has an inherent inefficiency: photoexcited electrons gain momenta predominantly parallel to the interface, while to leave the material they have to move perpendicular to it. Here, we report on the discovery of an in-plane photoelectric effect occurring within a two-dimensional electron gas. In this purely quantum-mechanical, scattering-free process, photo-electron momenta are perfe…
Here we present the use of Fabry-Pérot enhanced terahertz (THz) Mueller matrix ellipsometry to measure an electromagnon excitation in monoclinic cupric oxide (CuO). As a magnetically induced ferroelectric multiferroic, CuO exhibits coupling between electric and magnetic order. This gives rise to special quasiparticle excitations at THz frequencies called electromagnons. In order to measure the electromagnons in CuO, we exploit single-crystal CuO as a THz Fabry-Pérot cavity to resonantly enhance the excitation's signature. This enhancement technique enables the complex index of refraction to be…
Ultrafast two-dimensional spectroscopy utilizes correlated multiple light-matter interactions for retrieving dynamic features that may otherwise be hidden under the linear spectrum. Its extension to the terahertz regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, where a rich variety of material degrees of freedom reside, remains an experimental challenge. Here we report ultrafast two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy of gas-phase molecular rotors at room temperature. Using time-delayed terahertz pulse pairs, we observe photon echoes and other nonlinear signals resulting from molecular dipole orientatio…
We have used terahertz (THz) magneto-optical spectroscopy to investigate the cyclotron resonance in high mobility two-dimensional electron and hole systems. Our experiments reveal long-lived (~20 ps) coherent oscillations in the measured signal in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The cyclotron frequency extracted from the oscillations varies linearly with magnetic field for a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), as expected. However, we find that the complex non-parabolic valence band structure in a two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) causes the cyclotron frequency and effective mas…
As a key component for next-generation wireless communications (6G and beyond), terahertz (THz) electronic oscillators are being actively developed. Precise and dynamic phase control of ultrafast THz waveforms is essential for high-speed beam steering and high-capacity data transmission. However, measurement of such ultrafast dynamic process is beyond the scope of electronics due to the limited bandwidth of the electrical measuring instruments. Here we surpass this limit by applying photonic technology. Using a femtosecond laser, we generate offset-free THz pulses to phase-lock the electronic …
We report a THz reflectarray metasurface which uses graphene as active element to achieve beam steering, shaping and broadband phase modulation. This is based on the creation of a voltage controlled reconfigurable phase hologram, which can impart different reflection angles and phases to an incident beam, replacing bulky and fragile rotating mirrors used for terahertz imaging. This can also find applications in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, paving the way to versatile optical devices including light radars, adaptive optics, electro-optical modulators and screens.

Using metasurfaces to control the wave propagation at will has been very successful over the broad electromagnetic spectrum in recent years. By encoding specially designed abrupt changes of electromagnetic parameters into metasurfaces, such as phase and amplitude, nearly arbitrary control over the output wavefronts could be realized. Constituted by a single- or fewlayer of planar structures, metasurfaces are straightforward in design and fabrication, thus promising many realistic applications. Moreover, such control concept can be further extended to the surface wave regime. In this review, we…
Electromagnetic radiation within the terahertz (THz) frequency range is of great interest for applications in remote sensing and time-domain spectroscopy. The laser-induced plasmas are promising mediums for generating THz radiation. It has been recently reported that focusing femtosecond Bessel pulses inside dielectrics induces a high aspect ratio over-critical plasmas. Here we show that the intense resonantly driven electrostatic fields at the so-called critical surface lead to THz radiation emission. Through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation and analytical derivation, we have inv…
