Gradient structured (GS) metals processed by severe plastic deformation techniques can be designed to achieve simultaneously high strength and high ductility. Significant kinematic hardening is key to their excellent strain hardening capacity which results in a favorable strength-ductility combination. Unfortunately, no constitutive model has been established to simulate and analyze the characteristic kinematic hardening behavior of GS metal to understand the relationship between their microstructure and macroscopic response. In this work, we developed a deformation-mechanismbased strain gradient plasticity model considering the plasticity heterogeneities from the grain to the sample scale. A back stress model, which accounts for the dependency of dislocation pile-ups on grain size, is established to describe the cyclic deformation properties of GS materials. The established model unified the geometrically necessary dislocations accommodating internal plasticity heterogeneities, the resulting back stress and reversible dislocations during reverse loading into a strain gradient plasticity framework, without introducing excessive numbers of independent material parameters. A finite element implementation of the model quantitatively predicts the uniaxial tensile and tensile-compressive responses of a GS copper bar as well as of a reference sample with homogeneous grain size. It is found that GS copper exhibits enhanced kinematic hardening which results mainly from fine grains in the GS layer and contributes to the considerable ductility of the GS material. The model allows to investigate the mechanical response and optimize the properties of materials with various types of spatially heterogeneous grain microstructures.
The mechanical response of amorphous silica (or silica glass) under hydrostatic compression for very high pressures up to 25 GPa is modelled via an elastic-plastic constitutive equation (continuum mechanics framework). The material parameters appearing in the theory have been estimated from the ex situ experimental data from Rouxel et al. [Rouxel T, Ji H, Guin JP, Augereau F, Ruffle B J Appl Phys 2010;107(9):094903]. The model is shown to capture the major features of the pressure-volume changes response from the in situ experimental work of Sato and Funamori [Sato T, Funamori N Phys Rev Lett 2…
Tension-compression asymmetry is a notable feature of plasticity in bcc single crystals. Recent experiments reveal striking differences in the plasticity of bcc nanopillars for tension and compression. Here we present results from molecular dynamics simulations of nanopillars of bcc Fe in tension and compression. We find that a totally different deformation mechanism applies in each cases: dislocation glide in compression and twinning in tension. This difference explains experimentally-observed asymmetry in the nanopillar morphology.
Starting from the assumption that all possible orientations of grains are equally probable, we prove that the geometric factor of thermodynamic dislocation theory for polycrystals subjected to axially symmetric tension or compression must be equal to 2. We then use large-scale least-square analysis to identify the physics based parameters of this theory and show that the simulated stress-strain curves for OFHC copper, ARMCO iron and 4340 steel agree well with the experiments of Johnson and Cook.
In this paper it is demonstrated that only by accounting for the combined effects of anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry both at single crystal and polycrystal levels, it is possible to explain and accurately predict the peculiarities of the room-temperature torsional response of a strongly textured AZ31 Mg material. This is shown by using two modeling frameworks, namely: the viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) polycrystal model that accounts for tension-compression asymmetry of the mechanical response of a polycrystalline aggregate due to the occurrence of twinning at single crystal …
In this paper, we present an experimental study on plastic deformation and damage of polycrystalline pure Ti, as well as modeling of the observed behavior. From the mechanical characterization data, it can be concluded that the material displays anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry. As concerns damage, the X-ray tomography measurements conducted reveal that damage distribution and evolution in this HCP Ti material is markedly different than in a typical FCC material such as copper. Stewart and Cazacu (2011) anisotropic elastic/plastic damage model is used to describe the behavior. All …
The mechanical behaviour of graphene flakes under both tension and compression is examined using a cantilever-beam arrangement. Two different sets of samples were employed involving flakes just supported on a plastic bar but also embedded within the plastic substrate. By monitoring the shift of the 2D Raman line with strain, information on the stress transfer efficiency as a function of stress sign and monolayer support were obtained. In tension, the embedded flake seems to sustain strains up to 1.3%, whereas in compression there is an indication of flake buckling at about 0.7% strain. The ret…
Most of crystalline materials exhibit a hysteresis on their deformation curve when mechanically loaded in alternating directions. This Bauschinger effect is the signature of mechanisms existing at the atomic scale and controlling the materials damage and ultimately their failure. Here, three-dimensional simulations of dislocation dynamics and statistical analyses of the microstructure evolution reveal two original elementary mechanisms. An asymmetry in the dislocation network junctions arising from the stress driven curvatures and the partial reversibility of plastic avalanches give an explana…
Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are a unique class of intermetallic alloys that can cyclically sustain large deformations and recover a designed geometry through a solid-to-solid phase transformation. SMAs provide favorable actuation energy density properties, making them suitable for engineering applications requiring a significant, repeated, work output. To facilitate the development and validation of an SMA constitutive model considering the evolving anisotropic material response for High-Temperature SMA (HTSMA), uniaxial and pure bending actuation cycling tests on HTSMA specimens are performed …
The constitutive behavior of aluminum alloy A356 in the as-cast condition has been characterized using compression tests performed over a wide range of deformation temperatures (30-500°C) and strain rates (\approx0.1-10 /s). This work is intended to support the development of process models for a wide range of conditions including those relevant to casting, forging and machining. The flow stress behavior as a function of temperature and strain rate has been fit to a modified Johnson-Cook and extended Ludwik-Hollomon expression. The data has also been assessed with both the strain-independent K…
We develop a hyperelastic constitutive model for graphene --- describing in-plane deformations involving both large isotropic and deviatoric strains --- based on the invariant-theoretic approach to representation of anisotropic functions. The strain energy density function $ψ$ is expressed in terms of special scalar-valued functions of the 2D logarithmic strain tensor $ \mathbf E^{(0)}$ --- called the symmetry-invariants --- that remain invariant w.r.t. the material symmetry group of graphene, $\mathcal G = \mathcal C_{6v}$. Our constitutive model conforms to a larger set of \textit{ab initio}…
Uniaxial tensile tests are performed on a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) grade over a range of temperatures near the glass transition and over two decades of strain rate. Deformation maps are constructed for Young's modulus, flow strength, and failure strain as a function of temperature for selected strain rates. The glassy, glass transition and rubbery regimes are identified, and constitutive relations are calibrated for the modulus and flow strength within each regime.
In this paper, the dilatational response of porous solids with pressure-insensitive matrix displaying strength differential (SD) effects is investigated. To this end, micromechanical finite-element analyses of three-dimensional unit cells are carried out. The matrix behavior is governed by the isotropic form of Cazacu et al. (2006) criterion that accounts for SD effects through a parameter k. Simulation results are presented for axisymmetric tensile loadings corresponding to fixed values of the stress triaxiality for the two possible values of the Lode parameter, LP. For moderate and high stre…
The progressive instability behaviour of compressed dry-stone rectangular pillars loaded with an eccentric load is assessed experimentally and compared with the theory. Photoelastic compression tests were designed and executed on polymethyl-methacrylate brickwork pillars to reveal, i) the load-bearing capacity of the structure and the load-lateral displacement relation, ii) the effect of the eccentricity in the stress distribution along the structure, iii) the collapse mode of the system at high eccentricity. By employing a no-tension material model with linear behaviour in compression, new an…
We propose an Eulerian thermodynamically compatible model for ideal plasticity of crystalline solids treated as a material flow through an adjustable crystal lattice space. The model is based on the additive splitting of the velocity gradient into the crystal lattice part and the plastic part. The approach extends a Gibbs-potential-based formulation developed by Rajagopal and Srinivasa for obtaining the response functions for elasto-visco-plastic crystals. The framework makes constitutive assumptions for two scalar functions: the Gibbs potential and the rate of dissipation. The constitutive eq…
Microstructural and Mechanistic Insights into the Tension-Compression Asymmetry of Rapidly Solidified Fe-Cr Alloys: A Phase Field and Strain Gradient Plasticity Study
Most of crystalline materials develop an hysteresis on their deformation curve when a mechanical loading is applied in alternating directions. This effect, also known as the Bauschinger effect, is intimately related to the reversibile part of the plastic deformation and controls the materials damage and ultimately their failure. In the present work, we associate mesoscale Dislocation Dynamics simulations and Finite Element simulations to identify two original dislocation mechanisms at the origin of the traction/compression asymmetry and quantify their impacts on the cyclic behaviour of FCC sin…
Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to understand the variations in deformation mechanisms of Cu nanowires as a function of orientation and loading mode (tension or compression). Cu nanowires of different crystallographic orientations distributed uniformly on the standard stereographic triangle have been considered under tensile and compressive loading. The simulation results indicate that under compressive loading, the orientations close to $<$100$>$ corner deform by twinning mechanism, while the remaining orientations deform by dislocation slip. On the other hand, all the nano…
The phonon band structure of monolayer MoS2 is characteristic for a large energy gap between acoustic and optical branches, which protects the vibration of acoustic modes from being scattered by optical phonon modes. Therefore, the phonon bandgap engineering is of practical significance for the manipulation of phonon-related mechanical or thermal properties in monolayer MoS2. We perform both phonon analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the tension effect on the phonon bandgap and the compression induced instability of the monolayer MoS2. Our key finding is that the phonon …
The effect of cyclic loading on relaxation dynamics and mechanical properties of metallic glasses is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider the Kob-Andersen three-dimensional binary mixture rapidly cooled across the glass transition and subjected to thousands of tension-compression cycles in the elastic range. It was found that during cyclic loading at constant pressure, the system is relocated to progressively lower levels of the potential energy, thus promoting greater densification and higher strength. Furthermore, with increasing stress amplitude, the average glass densi…
The process of structural relaxation in disordered solids subjected to repeated tension-compression loading is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The binary glass is prepared by rapid cooling well below the glass transition temperature and then periodically strained at constant volume. We find that the amorphous system is relocated to progressively lower potential energy states during hundreds of cycles, and the energy levels become deeper upon approaching critical strain amplitude from below. The decrease in potential energy is associated with collective nonaffine rearrangements of…
In this paper we present a thermodynamically consistent material model which is capable of modelling ductile-to brittle failure mode transition in ductile material undergoing deformations at high strain rates, and demonstrate the performance of the model in a numerical study using a fully coupled thermal-structural finite element analysis of a notched aluminium alloy specimen loaded in cyclic tension. The model is based on an objective representation of the deformation and stress measures and on a rate type constitutive equations. It does not only complies with the principles of material model…
Two unique behaviors of superelasticity and shape memory effect have made shape memory alloy such as NiTi, an interesting alloy for different applications. Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) as a powerful tool for fabricating NiTi has become of interest to make complex geometries. Selective laser melting (SLM) is an AM method that not only provides flexibility to make complex 3D shapes but also it can be possible to tailor the thermomechanical properties of the parts just by changing the process parameters. The non-homogeneous microstructure of as-fabricated parts as well as asymmetric mech…
This paper aimed at extending a model developed by Ladeveze to capture thermal expansion and coupled thermo-mechanical phenomena, as such as those encountered at elevated and extreme temperatures. In the new model a linear thermal expansion coefficient is added to equation of state to account for the thermal to mechanical coupling effects. The mechanical to thermal effects are introduced by assuming an internal heat generation due to residual strain effects. The constitutive relations of the coupled thermo-mechanical behaviors of ceramic matrix composite material model were incorporated into A…

The constitutive behavior of polymeric materials is often modeled by finite linear viscoelastic (FLV) or quasi-linear viscoelastic (QLV) models. These popular models are simplifications that typically cannot accurately capture the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of materials. For example, the success of attempts to capture strain rate-dependent behavior has been limited so far. To overcome this problem, we introduce viscoelastic Constitutive Artificial Neural Networks (vCANNs), a novel physics-informed machine learning framework for anisotropic nonlinear viscoelasticity at finite strains. vCAN…
The cyclic deformation behavior of extruded Mg-8.5wt.%Al alloy with a conventional extrusion texture and a modified texture is systematically investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and elastic viscoplastic self-consistent (EVPSC) modeling incorporating a twinning/de-twinning (TDT) scheme. The role of twinning and de-twinning on the deformation behavior of Mg-8.5wt.% Al alloy is investigated in terms of the macroscopic stress-strain response, the evolution of the activities of various deformation mechanisms, the texture evolution, the evolution of the internal elastic strains, and the evol…
The mechanical properties of Cadmium telluride (CdTe) nanowire have become focus of interest now-a-days due to its promising application in opto-electro-mechanical nanodevices. Inthis study, molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the mechanical behavior of Zinc Blende (ZB) crystal structured CdTe nanowires (NWs) by varying size, temperature, crystal orientation and strain rate under tension and compression. Results show that the fracture strength of the [111]-oriented CdTe NWs is always higher than that of the [110]-oriented CdTe NWs under tension whereas in compression, …
Strain-controlled fatigue of Mg-1Mn-0.5Nd (wt.\%) alloy were studied by experiment and simulation. The microstructure was made up of a dispersion of strongly texture grains (13\%) embedded in a matrix of grains with a random texture. The cyclic stress-strain curves showed limited tension-compression anisotropy because of the limited texture. Cyclic hardening under compression and cyclic softening under tension occurred due to the presence of twinning. Moreover, the twin volume fraction of the broken samples depended on whether the sample was broken in tension or compression, indicating that tw…
In this paper is presented a new single crystal plasticity model with yielding accounting for the tetragonal symmetry of molecular energetic crystals. This new tetragonal yield criterion has been developed using representation theorems for anisotropic tensor functions. It is defined for any type of loadings and depends on the characteristics of the tetragonal lattice (c/a ratio). It involves three independent plastic anisotropy parameters that can be expressed analytically in terms of the uniaxial yield stresses along four crystallographic directions. Illustration of the capabilities of this m…

The use of composite materials for structures subjected to impacts requires a deep understanding about the dynamic behaviour of the material. To this end, a physically-based computational micromechanics simulation tool has been developed to predict failure initiation in a composite ply over a wide range of strain rates. The computational micromechanics framework incorporates constitutive models for the fibre, matrix and fibre-matrix interface, which are partly calibrated with novel micromechanical testing techniques. The simulation tool was applied to two matrix-dominated deformation modes of …
The mechanical response of embedded ABA trilayer graphene flakes loaded in tension and compression on polymer beams is monitored by simultaneous Raman measurements through the strain sensitivity of the G or 2D peaks. A characteristic peculiarity of the investigated flake is that it contains a trilayer and bilayer part. The Bernal stacked bilayer was used as a strain sensor aiming to assess the efficiency of the load transfer from the polymer matrix through shear to the individual graphene layers. For the trilayer graphene in tension, both peaks are redshifted and splitting of the G peak is rep…

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we provide chain-level insights into the dissimilarities in rearrangements of polymers under uniaxial tensile and compressive deformation in glassy and semicrystalline samples of varying chain lengths. The organization of polymers under tension and compression is distinctively different. The chains align themselves along the tensile axis leading to a net global nematic ordering of their bonds and end-to-end vectors whereas under compression, the polymers arrange themselves in a plane perpendicular to the compressive axis resulting in emergence of an anti-n…
A poromechanical model of partially saturated deformable porous media is proposed based on a phase field approach at modeling the behavior of the mixture of liquid water and wet air, which saturates the pore space, the phase field being the saturation (ratio). While the standard retention curve is expected still to provide the intrinsic retention properties of the porous skeleton, depending on the porous texture, an enhanced description of surface tension between the wetting (liquid water) and the non-wetting (wet air) fluid, occupying the pore space, is stated considering a regularization of …
Due to its computational robustness and versatility, the phase field fracture model has become the preferred tool for predicting a wide range of cracking phenomena. However, in its conventional form, its intrinsic tension-compression symmetry in damage evolution prevents its application to the modelling of compressive failures in brittle and quasi-brittle solids, such as concrete or rock materials. In this work, we present a general methodology for decomposing the phase field fracture driving force, the strain energy density, so as to reproduce asymmetrical tension-compression fracture behavio…
Central to most applications involving monolayer graphene is its mechanical response under various stress states. To date most of the work reported is of theoretical nature and refers to tension and compression loading of model graphene. Most of the experimental work is indeed limited to bending of single flakes in air and the stretching of flakes up to typically ~1% using plastic substrates. Recently we have shown that by employing a cantilever beam we can subject single graphene into various degrees of axial compression. Here we extend this work much further by measuring in detail both stres…
