A detailed investigation on the structural and magneto-transport properties of iron intercalated Bi2Se3 single crystals have been presented. The x-ray diffraction and Raman studies confirm the intercalation of Fe in the van der Waals gaps between the layers. The electrical resistivity of the compounds decreases upon intercalation, and Hall resistivity shows the enhancement of the charge carriers upon intercalation. The magnetoresistance shows the non-saturating linear behavior at higher magnetic field and low temperature. Intercalation of Fe increases the onset of the linear magnetoresistance behavior, indicating the reduction in quantum effects. The Kohler scaling employed on the magnetoresistance data indicates single scattering process for all these compounds in the measured temperature range of 3- 300 K.
We report the successful growth of high-quality single crystals of potassium intercalated iron selenide KxFe2-ySe2 by Bridgeman method. The effect of iron vacancies on transport properties was investigated by electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. With varying iron content, the system passes from semiconducting/insulating to superconducting state. Comparing with superconductivity, the anomalous "hump" effect in the normal state resistivity is much more sensitive to the iron deficiency. The electrical resistivity exhibits a perfect metallic behavior (R300K/R35K=42) for…
Novel phenomena in magnetically-intercalated graphite has been a subject of much research, pioneered and promoted by M.~S. and G.~Dresselhaus and many others in the 1980s. Among the most enigmatic findings of that era was a dramatic, roller-coaster-like behavior of the magnetoresistivity in EuC$_6$ compound, in which magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ ions form a triangular lattice that is commensurate to graphite honeycomb planes. In this study, we provide a long-awaited {\it microscopic} explanation of this behavior, demonstrating that the resistivity of EuC$_6$ is dominated by spin excitations in Eu-planes…
The electronic structure and magnetism of a new magnetic intercalation compound (Li0.8Fe0.2)OHFeSe are investigated theoretically. The electronic structure calculations predict that the Fe in the (Li,Fe)OH intercalated layer is in +2 valence state, i.e. there is electron doping to the FeSe layer, resulting in the shrinking of the Fermi surface (FS) pocket around Gamma and a strong suppression of dynamical spin susceptibility at M in comparison with the bulk FeSe compound. The ground state of the FeSe layer is a striped antiferromagnetic (SAFM) metal, while the (Li,Fe)OH layer displays a very w…
We propose a theoretical description of the phase diagram and physical properties in A2Fe4Se5-type (A=K, Tl) compounds based on a coexistent local moment and itinerant electron picture. Using neutron scattering and ARPES measurements to fix the general structure of the local moment and itinerant Fermi pockets, we find a superconducting (SC) regime with s-wave pairing at the M pockets and an incipient sign-change s-wave near the Gamma point, which is adjacent to an insulating state at low doping and a charge-density-wave (CDW) state at high doping. The uniform susceptibility and resistivity are…
Two iron-chalcogenide superconductors Li(x)[C5H5N](y)Fe(2-z)Se2 and Cs(x)Fe(2-z)Se2 in the as-prepared and annealed state have been investigated by means of the Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature. Multi-component spectra are obtained. One can see a non-magnetic component due to iron located in the unperturbed Fe-Se sheets responsible for superconductivity. Remaining components are magnetically ordered even at room temperature. There is some magnetically ordered iron in Fe-Se sheets perturbed by presence of the iron vacancies. Additionally, one can see iron dispersed between sheets in t…
Sharp magnetization switching and large magnetoresistance were previously discovered in single crystals of 2H-Fe$_x$TaS$_2$ and attributed to the Fe superstructure and its defects. We report similar sharp switching in 1T-Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ ($0.086\;{\leq}\;x\;{\leq}0.703$) and the discovery of large magnetoresistance. The switching field $H_s$ and magnetoresistance are similar to 2H-Fe$_x$TaS$_2$, with a larger than expected bowtie magnetoresistance and a sharp hysteresis loop. Despite previous reports, electron diffraction shows only the $\sqrt{3}{\times}\sqrt{3}$ superstructure in 1T-Fe$_x$TiS$_2…
In this paper we investigate the intercalation effects of Iron (Fe) in the van der Waals gap of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ on the magnetic and transport properties using first-principles band structure estimations combined using dynamical mean-field theory. Inclusion of electronic correlations and spin-orbit coupling effects are found to result in the emergence of ferromagnetic properties in an intercalated Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Further the Dirac cone in the band structure of Bismuth Selenide is modified via Fe intercalation at moderate densities. Accompanied by novel structural effects, the onset of an orbital sel…
A time-resolved synchrotron X-ray total scattering study sheds light on the evolution of the different structural length scales involved during the intercalation of the layered iron-selenide host by organic molecular donors, aiming at the formation of the expanded lattice $Li_x(C_5H_5N)_yFe_{2-z}Se_2$ hybrid superconductor. The intercalates are found to crystallize in the tetragonal $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure at the average level, however, with an enhanced interlayer iron-selenide spacing (d= 16.2 Å) that accommodates the heterocyclic molecular spacers. Quantitative atomic pair distribution f…
Intercalation of organic cations in superconducting iron selenide can significantly increase the critical temperature (Tc). We present an electrochemical method using beta-FeSe crystals (Tc ~ 8 K) floating on a mercury cathode to intercalate tetramethylammonium ions (TMA+) quantitatively to obtain bulk samples of (TMA)0.5Fe2Se2 with Tc = 43 K. The layered crystal structure is closely related to the ThCr2Si2-type with disordered TMA+ ions between the FeSe layers. Although the organic ions are not detectable by X-ray diffraction, packing requirements as well as first principle DFT calculations c…
We report on synthesis of single crystals of BaFe2Se3 and study of their crystal and magnetic structures by means of synchrotron single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. The crystal structure has orthorhombic symmetry and consists of double chains of FeSe4 edge connected tetrahedra intercalated by barium. Below 240 K long range block-spin checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is developed. The magnetic structure is similar to one observed in A0.8Fe1.6Se2 (A=K, Rb or Cs) superconductors. The crystals exhibit a transition to the diamagnetic state with an onset transition tempera…
We examine the relevance of magneto-elastic coupling to describe the complex magnetic and structural behaviour of the different classes of the iron superconductors. We model the system as a two-dimensional metal whose magnetic excitations interact with the distortions of the underlying square lattice. Going beyond mean field we find that quantum fluctuation effects can explain two unusual features of these materials that have attracted considerable attention. First, why iron telluride orders magnetically at a non-nesting wave-vector $(π/2, π/2)$ and not at the nesting wave-vector $(π, 0)$ as i…
Iron telluride doped lightly with selenium is known to undergo a first order magneto-structural transition before turning superconducting at higher doping. We study the effects of magneto-elastic couplings on this transition using symmetry considerations. We find that the magnetic order parameters are coupled to the uniform monoclinic strain of the unit cell with one iron per cell, as well as to the phonons at high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. In the magnetic phase the former gives rise to monoclinic distortion while the latter induces dimerization of the ferromagnetic iron chains du…
We study theoretically the variation of the magnetic and the structural transition temperatures of the iron arsenide superconductors with external uniaxial stress. We show that the increase of the transition temperatures reported in recent experiments is compatible with a simple magneto-elastic model in which the physical origin of this variation is linked to the fact that antiferromagnetic bonds are longer than the ferromagnetic ones in the magnetic phase. We make predictions which can be verified in order to test the relevance of this model.
A magneto-orbital coupling mechanism is proposed to account for the weak energy gap at the Fermi energy in the $(π,0)$ ordered SDW state of a realistic three band model for iron pnictides involving $d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$, and $d_{xy}$ Fe orbitals. The orbital mixing terms between the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ orbitals, which are important in reproducing the orbital composition of the elliptical electron pockets at $(\pm π,0)$ and $(0,\pm π)$, are shown to play a key role in the energy gap formation in the SDW state.

Many of the iron pnictides have strongly anisotropic normal-state characteristics, important for the exotic magnetic and superconducting behavior these materials exhibit. Yet, the origin of the observed anisotropy is unclear. Electronically driven nematicity has been suggested, but distinguishing this as an independent degree of freedom from magnetic and structural orders is difficult, as these couple together to break the same tetragonal symmetry. Here we use time-resolved polarimetry to reveal critical nematic fluctuations in unstrained Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)_2As_2. The femtosecond anisotropic res…
We calculate the effects of the spin-lattice coupling on the magnon spectrum of thin ferromagnetic films consisting of the magnetic insulator yttrium-iron garnet. The magnon-phonon hybridisation generates a characteristic minimum in the spin dynamic structure factor which quantitatively agrees with recent Brillouin light scattering experiments. We also show that at room temperature the phonon contribution to the magnon damping exhibits a rather complicated momentum dependence: In the exchange regime the magnon damping is dominated by Cherenkov type scattering processes, while in the long-wavel…
Coexistence of phases, characterized by different electronic degrees of freedom, commonly occurs in layered superconductors. Among them, alkaline intercalated chalcogenides are model systems showing microscale coexistence of paramagnetic (PAR) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases, however, temporal behavior of different phases is still unknown. Here, we report the first visualization of the atomic motion in the granular phase of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Unlike the PAR phase, the AFM texture reveals an intermittent dynamics with avalanches as in martens…
The longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistance (LMR) has been measured in different Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)2As2 single crystals and in LiFeAs. For all these compounds, we find a negative LMR in the paramagnetic phase whose magnitude increases as H^2. We show that this negative LMR can be readily explained in terms of suppression of the spin fluctuations by the magnetic field. In the Co-doped samples, the absolute value of the LMR coefficient is found to decrease with doping content in the paramagnetic phase. The analysis of its T dependence in an itinerant nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model evi…
We systematically investigated the anisotropic in-plane resistivity of the iron telluride including three kinds of impurity atoms: excess Fe, Se substituted for Te, and Cu substituted for Fe. Sizable resistivity anisotropy was found in the magneto-structurally ordered phase whereas the sign is opposite ($ρ_a$ $>$ $ρ_b$, where the $b$-axis parameter is shorter than the $a$-axis one) to that observed in the transition-metal doped iron arsenides ($ρ_a$ $<$ $ρ_b$). On the other hand, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the resistivity anisotropy in the iron tellurides is correlated with …
Ultrafast non-thermal manipulation of magnetization by light relies on either indirect coupling of the electric field component of the light with spins via spin-orbit interaction or direct coupling between the magnetic field component and spins. Here we propose a novel scenario for coupling between the electric field of light and spins via optical modification of the exchange interaction, one of the strongest quantum effects, the strength of which can reach 1000 Tesla. We demonstrate that this isotropic opto-magnetic effect, which can be called the inverse magneto-refraction, is allowed in a m…
We report superconducting properties of single crystalline Ca10(Pt4-δAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 by X-ray diffraction, magnetization, resistivity, and magneto-optical imaging measurements. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail hysteresis loop and relatively high critical current density Jc ~ 0.8\times105 A/cm2 at low temperatures. The exponential temperature dependence of Jc, which arises from nonlinear effective flux-creep activation energy, has been observed. Upper critical field determined by resistive transition shows a relatively large anisotropy. The magneto-optical images reveal homoge…
We investigated the evolution of the temperature-composition phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te upon Se substitution. In particular, the effect of Se substitution on the two-step, coupled magneto-structural transition in Fe$_{1+y}$Te single crystals is investigated. To this end, the nominal Fe excess was kept at $y$ = 0.12. For low Se concentrations, the two magneto-structural transitions displayed a tendency to merge. In spite of the high Fe-content, superconductivity emerges for Se concentrations, $x \geq$ 0.1. We present a temperature-composition phase diagram to demonstrate the interplay of str…
The quantum transport of Dirac cone states in the iron pnictide Ba(FeAs)$_2$ with a d-\,multiband system is studied by using single crystal samples. The transverse magnetoresistance develops linearly against magnetic field at low temperatures. The transport phenomena are interpreted in terms of the 0$^{th}$ Landau level by applying the theory predicted by Abrikosov. The results of the semiclassical analyses of a two carrier system under low magnetic field limit show that both electron and hole reside as the high mobility states, being indicative to the fact that both electron- and hole Dirac c…
