Classifying the sub-categories of an object from the same super-category (e.g. bird species, car and aircraft models) in fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) highly relies on discriminative feature representation and accurate region localization. Existing approaches mainly focus on distilling information from high-level features. In this paper, however, we show that by integrating low-level information (e.g. color, edge junctions, texture patterns), performance can be improved with enhanced feature representation and accurately located discriminative regions. Our solution, named Attention Pyramid Convolutional Neural Network (AP-CNN), consists of a) a pyramidal hierarchy structure with a top-down feature pathway and a bottom-up attention pathway, and hence learns both high-level semantic and low-level detailed feature representation, and b) an ROI guided refinement strategy with ROI guided dropblock and ROI guided zoom-in, which refines features with discriminative local regions enhanced and background noises eliminated. The proposed AP-CNN can be trained end-to-end, without the need of additional bounding box/part annotations. Extensive experiments on three commonly used FGVC datasets (CUB-200-2011, Stanford Cars, and FGVC-Aircraft) demonstrate that our approach can achieve state-of-the-art performance. In recent years, deep-networks-based hashing has become a leading approach for large-scale image retrieval. Most deep hashing approaches use the high layer to extract the powerful semantic representations. However, these methods have limited ability for fine-grained image retrieval because the semantic features extracted from the high layer are difficult in capturing the subtle differences. To this end, we propose a novel two-pyramid hashing architecture to learn both the semantic information and the subtle appearance details for fine-grained image search. Inspired by the feature pyramids of c…
Weakly supervised temporal action localization, which aims at temporally locating action instances in untrimmed videos using only video-level class labels during training, is an important yet challenging problem in video analysis. Many current methods adopt the "localization by classification" framework: first do video classification, then locate temporal area contributing to the results most. However, this framework fails to locate the entire action instances and gives little consideration to the local context. In this paper, we present a novel architecture called Cascaded Pyramid Mining Netw…
In video surveillance, pedestrian retrieval (also called person re-identification) is a critical task. This task aims to retrieve the pedestrian of interest from non-overlapping cameras. Recently, transformer-based models have achieved significant progress for this task. However, these models still suffer from ignoring fine-grained, part-informed information. This paper proposes a multi-direction and multi-scale Pyramid in Transformer (PiT) to solve this problem. In transformer-based architecture, each pedestrian image is split into many patches. Then, these patches are fed to transformer laye…
Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are nowadays achieving significant leaps in different pattern recognition tasks including action recognition. Current CNNs are increasingly deeper, data-hungrier and this makes their success tributary of the abundance of labeled training data. CNNs also rely on max/average pooling which reduces dimensionality of output layers and hence attenuates their sensitivity to the availability of labeled data. However, this process may dilute the information of upstream convolutional layers and thereby affect the discrimination power of the trained representatio…

Cardiac structure segmentation plays an important role in medical analysis procedures. Images' blurred boundaries issue always limits the segmentation performance. To address this difficult problem, we presented a novel network structure which embedded dilated pyramid pooling block in the skip connections between networks' encoding and decoding stage. A dilated pyramid pooling block is made up of convolutions and pooling operations with different vision scopes. Equipped the model with such module, it could be endowed with multi-scales vision ability. Together combining with other techniques, i…
Top-down saliency models produce a probability map that peaks at target locations specified by a task/goal such as object detection. They are usually trained in a fully supervised setting involving pixel-level annotations of objects. We propose a weakly supervised top-down saliency framework using only binary labels that indicate the presence/absence of an object in an image. First, the probabilistic contribution of each image region to the confidence of a CNN-based image classifier is computed through a backtracking strategy to produce top-down saliency. From a set of saliency maps of an imag…
Recognizing and localizing events in videos is a fundamental task for video understanding. Since events may occur in auditory and visual modalities, multimodal detailed perception is essential for complete scene comprehension. Most previous works attempted to analyze videos from a holistic perspective. However, they do not consider semantic information at multiple scales, which makes the model difficult to localize events in different lengths. In this paper, we present a Multimodal Pyramid Attentional Network (\textbf{MM-Pyramid}) for event localization. Specifically, we first propose the atte…
Object detection is a challenging task in remote sensing because objects only occupy a few pixels in the images, and the models are required to simultaneously learn object locations and detection. Even though the established approaches well perform for the objects of regular sizes, they achieve weak performance when analyzing small ones or getting stuck in the local minima (e.g. false object parts). Two possible issues stand in their way. First, the existing methods struggle to perform stably on the detection of small objects because of the complicated background. Second, most of the standard …
Accurate lesion detection in computer tomography (CT) slices benefits pathologic organ analysis in the medical diagnosis process. More recently, it has been tackled as an object detection problem using the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Despite the achievements from off-the-shelf CNN models, the current detection accuracy is limited by the inability of CNNs on lesions at vastly different scales. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Scale Booster (MSB) with channel and spatial attention integrated into the backbone Feature Pyramid Network (FPN). In each pyramid level, the proposed MSB captu…

For fine-grained visual classification, objects usually share similar geometric structure but present variant local appearance and different pose. Therefore, localizing and extracting discriminative local features play a crucial role in accurate category prediction. Existing works either pay attention to limited object parts or train isolated networks for locating and classification. In this paper, we propose Weakly Supervised Bilinear Attention Network (WS-BAN) to solve these issues. It jointly generates a set of attention maps (region-of-interest maps) to indicate the locations of object's p…

Temporal language grounding (TLG) aims to localize a video segment in an untrimmed video based on a natural language description. To alleviate the expensive cost of manual annotations for temporal boundary labels, we are dedicated to the weakly supervised setting, where only video-level descriptions are provided for training. Most of the existing weakly supervised methods generate a candidate segment set and learn cross-modal alignment through a MIL-based framework. However, the temporal structure of the video as well as the complicated semantics in the sentence are lost during the learning. I…

One of the time-consuming routine work for a radiologist is to discern anatomical structures from tomographic images. For assisting radiologists, this paper develops an automatic segmentation method for pelvic magnetic resonance (MR) images. The task has three major challenges 1) A pelvic organ can have various sizes and shapes depending on the axial image, which requires local contexts to segment correctly. 2) Different organs often have quite similar appearance in MR images, which requires global context to segment. 3) The number of available annotated images are very small to use the latest…
Most of the existing Siamese-based trackers treat tracking problem as a parallel task of classification and regression. However, some studies show that the sibling head structure could lead to suboptimal solutions during the network training. Through experiments we find that, without regression, the performance could be equally promising as long as we delicately design the network to suit the training objective. We introduce a novel voting-based classification-only tracking algorithm named Pyramid Correlation based Deep Hough Voting (short for PCDHV), to jointly locate the top-left and bottom-…

Data augmentation is usually adopted to increase the amount of training data, prevent overfitting and improve the performance of deep models. However, in practice, random data augmentation, such as random image cropping, is low-efficiency and might introduce many uncontrolled background noises. In this paper, we propose Weakly Supervised Data Augmentation Network (WS-DAN) to explore the potential of data augmentation. Specifically, for each training image, we first generate attention maps to represent the object's discriminative parts by weakly supervised learning. Next, we augment the image g…

Many recently developed object detectors focused on coarse-to-fine framework which contains several stages that classify and regress proposals from coarse-grain to fine-grain, and obtains more accurate detection gradually. Multi-resolution models such as Feature Pyramid Network(FPN) integrate information of different levels of resolution and effectively improve the performance. Previous researches also have revealed that localization can be further improved by: 1) using fine-grained information which is more translational variant; 2) refining local areas which is more focused on local boundary…

Most semi-supervised skeleton-based action recognition approaches aim to learn the skeleton action representations only at the joint level, but neglect the crucial motion characteristics at the coarser-grained body (e.g., limb, trunk) level that provide rich additional semantic information, though the number of labeled data is limited. In this work, we propose a novel Pyramid Self-attention Polymerization Learning (dubbed as PSP Learning) framework to jointly learn body-level, part-level, and joint-level action representations of joint and motion data containing abundant and complementary sema…

We target at the task of weakly-supervised action localization (WSAL), where only video-level action labels are available during model training. Despite the recent progress, existing methods mainly embrace a localization-by-classification paradigm and overlook the fruitful fine-grained temporal distinctions between video sequences, thus suffering from severe ambiguity in classification learning and classification-to-localization adaption. This paper argues that learning by contextually comparing sequence-to-sequence distinctions offers an essential inductive bias in WSAL and helps identify coh…

In this paper, we propose a deep neural network based solution for automated left atrium segmentation in gadolinium-enhanced MR volumes with promising performance. We firstly argue that, for this volumetric segmentation task, networks in 2D fashion can present great superiorities in time efficiency and segmentation accuracy than networks with 3D fashion. Fine-grained object categorization aims for distinguishing objects of subordinate categories that belong to the same entry-level object category. The task is challenging due to the facts that (1) training images with ground-truth labels are difficult to obtain, and (2) variations among different subordinate categories are subtle. It is well established that characterizing features of different subordinate categories are located on local parts of object instances. In fact, careful part annotations are available in many fine-grained categorization datasets. However, manually annotating object pa…

Action understanding has evolved into the era of fine granularity, as most human behaviors in real life have only minor differences. To detect these fine-grained actions accurately in a label-efficient way, we tackle the problem of weakly-supervised fine-grained temporal action detection in videos for the first time. Without the careful design to capture subtle differences between fine-grained actions, previous weakly-supervised models for general action detection cannot perform well in the fine-grained setting. We propose to model actions as the combinations of reusable atomic actions which a…

In this paper, we categorize fine-grained images without using any object / part annotation neither in the training nor in the testing stage, a step towards making it suitable for deployments. Fine-grained image categorization aims to classify objects with subtle distinctions. Most existing works heavily rely on object / part detectors to build the correspondence between object parts by using object or object part annotations inside training images. The need for expensive object annotations prevents the wide usage of these methods. Instead, we propose to select useful parts from multi-scale pa…

Convolutional layers in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) treat the channel features equally without feature selection flexibility. While using ANNs for image denoising in real-world applications with unknown noise distributions, particularly structured noise with learnable patterns, modeling informative features can substantially boost the performance. Fine-grained image classification is to recognize hundreds of subcategories in each basic-level category. Existing methods employ discriminative localization to find the key distinctions among subcategories. However, they generally have two limitations: (1) Discriminative localization relies on region proposal methods to hypothesize the locations of discriminative regions, which are time-consuming. (2) The training of discriminative localization depends on object or part annotations, which are heavily labor-consuming. It is highly challenging to address the two key limitations simultaneously, …

In this paper, we propose the spatial-scale aligned network (SSANET) and implicitly address misalignments during the recognition process. Especially, SSANET consists of 1) a self-supervised proposal mining formula with Morphological Alignment Constraints; 2) a discriminative scale mining (DSM) module, which exploits the feature pyramid via a circulant matrix, and provides the Fourier solver for fas…

However, deep convolutional neural networks trained with image level labels only tend to focus on the most discriminative parts while missing other object parts, which could provide complementary information. In this paper, we approach this problem from a different perspective. We build complementary parts models in a weakly supervised manner to retrieve information suppressed by dominant object parts de…

Fine-grained image classification is a challenging problem, since the difficulty of finding discriminative features. To handle this circumstance, basically, there are two ways to go. One is use attention based method to focus on informative areas, while the other one aims to find high order between features. Further, for attention based method there are two directions, activation based and detection based, which are proved effective by scholars. However ,rare work focus on fusing two types of attention with high order feature. In this paper, we propose a novel DAF method which fuse two types o…

We present an approach to matching images of objects in fine-grained datasets without using part annotations, with an application to the challenging problem of weakly supervised single-view reconstruction. This is in contrast to prior works that require part annotations, since matching objects across class and pose variations is challenging with appearance features alone. We overcome this challenge through a novel deep learning architecture, WarpNet, that aligns an object in one image with a different object in another. We exploit the structure of the fine-grained dataset to create artificial …

Although recent advances in deep learning accelerated an improvement in a weakly supervised object localization (WSOL) task, there are still challenges to identify the entire body of an object, rather than only discriminative parts. In this paper, we propose a novel residual fine-grained attention (RFGA) module that autonomously excites the less activated regions of an object by utilizing information distributed over channels and locations within feature maps in combination with a residual operation. To be specific, we devise a series of mechanisms of triple-view attention representation, atte…
In medical imaging, Class-Activation Map (CAM) serves as the main explainability tool by pointing to the region of interest. Since the localization accuracy from CAM is constrained by the resolution of the model's feature map, one may expect that segmentation models, which generally have large feature maps, would produce more accurate CAMs. However, we have found that this is not the case due to task mismatch. While segmentation models are developed for datasets with pixel-level annotation, only image-level annotation is available in most medical imaging datasets. Our experiments suggest that …
We propose a weakly supervised method using two algorithms to predict object bounding boxes given only an image classification dataset. We use the property of FCN to return a mask for images larger than training images to get a primary output segmentation mask during test time by passing an image pyramid to it. We enhance the FCN output mask into final output bounding boxes by a Convolutional Encoder-Decoder (ConvAE) viz. the second algorithm. ConvAE is trained to localize objects on an artifici…
In the weakly supervised localization setting, supervision is given as an image-level label. We propose to employ an image classifier $f$ and to train a generative network $g$ that outputs, given the input image, a per-pixel weight map that indicates the location of the object within the image. Network $g$ is trained by minimizing the discrepancy between the output of the classifier $f$ on the original image and its output given the same image weighted by the output of $g$. The scheme requires a regularization term that ensures that $g$ does not provide a uniform weight, and an early stopping …

In this work a novel approach for weakly supervised object detection that incorporates pointwise mutual information is presented. A fully convolutional neural network architecture is applied in which the network learns one filter per object class. The resulting feature map indicates the location of objects in an image, yielding an intuitive representation of a class activation map. While traditionally such networks are learned by a softmax or binary logistic regression (sigmoid cross-entropy loss), a learning approach based on a cosine loss is introduced. Current weakly supervised object localization and segmentation rely on class-discriminative visualization techniques to generate pseudo-labels for pixel-level training. Such visualization methods, including class activation mapping (CAM) and Grad-CAM, use only the deepest, lowest resolution convolutional layer, missing all information in intermediate layers.
