The search for a material platform for topological quantum computation has recently focused on unconventional superconductors. Such material systems, where the superconducting order parameter breaks a symmetry of the crystal point group, are capable of hosting novel phenomena, including emergent Majorana quasiparticles. Unique among unconventional superconductors is the recently discovered UTe2, where spin-triplet superconductivity emerges from a paramagnetic normal state. Although UTe2 could be considered a relative of a family of known ferromagnetic superconductors, the unique crystal structure of this material and experimentally suggested zero Curie temperature pose a great challenge to determining the symmetries, magnetism, and topology underlying the superconducting state. These emergent properties will determine the utility of UTe2 for future spintronics and quantum information applications. Here, we report observations of a non-zero polar Kerr effect and of two transitions in the specific heat upon entering the superconducting state, which together show that the superconductivity in UTe2 is characterized by an order parameter with two components that breaks time reversal symmetry. These data allow us to place firm constraints on the symmetries of the order parameter, which strongly suggest that UTe2 is a Weyl superconductor that hosts chiral Fermi arc surface states.
The theory of hole superconductivity proposes that the fundamental asymmetry between electrons and holes in solids is responsible for superconductivity. Here we point out a remarkable consequence of this theory: a tendency for negative charge to be expelled from the bulk of the superconductor towards the surface. Experimentally observable consequences of this physics are discussed.
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si has been investigated using the zero-field $μ$SR technique. The $μ$SR data indicate that the whole muon ensemble senses spontaneous internal fields in the magnetic phase, demonstrating that magnetism occurs in the whole sample volume. This points to a microscopic coexistence between magnetism and heavy-fermion superconductivity.
Time-reversal invariant topological superconductors are a new state of matter which have a bulk superconducting gap and robust Majorana fermion surface states. These have not yet been realized in solid state systems. In this paper, we propose that this state can be realized in doped Weyl semimetals or Weyl metals. The Fermi surfaces of a Weyl metal carry Chern numbers, which is a required ingredient for such a topological superconductor. By applying the fluctuation-exchange approach to a generic model of time-reversal invariant Dirac and Weyl semimetals, we investigate what microscopic interac…
Van der Waals materials like NbSe$_2$ or TaS$_2$ have demonstrated Ising superconductivity down to atomically thin layers. Due to the spin-orbit coupling, these superconductors have the in-plane upper critical magnetic field far beyond the Pauli limit. We theoretically demonstrate that, twisted bilayer Ising superconductors separated by a ferromagnetic buffer layer can naturally host chiral topological superconductivity with Chern numbers, which can be realized in heterostructures like $\mathrm{NbSe_2/CrCl_3/NbSe_2}$. Under appropriate experimental conditions the topological superconducting ga…
The theory of hole superconductivity proposes that superconductivity originates in the fundamental electron-hole asymmetry of condensed matter and that it is an 'undressing' transition. Here we propose that a natural consequence of this theory is that superconductors behave as giant atoms. The model predicts that the charge distribution in superconductors is inhomogeneous, with higher concentration of negative charge near the surface. Some of this negative charge will spill out, giving rise to a negative electron layer right outside the surface of the superconductor, which should be experiment…
Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDs) MoTe2 has attracted much attention due to its predicted Weyl semimetal (WSM) state and a quantum spin Hall insulator in bulk and monolayer form, respectively. We find that the superconductivity in MoTe2 single crystal can be much enhanced by the partial substitution of the Te ions by the S ones. The maximum of the superconducting temperature TC of MoTe1.8S0.2 single crystal is about 1.3 K. Compared with the parent MoTe2 single crystal (TC=0.1 K), nearly 13-fold in TC is improved in MoTe1.8S0.2 one. The superconductivity has been inves…
Superconductivity and magnetic order strongly compete in many conventional superconductors, at least partly because both tend to gap the Fermi surface. In magnetically-ordered conventional superconductors, the competition between these cooperative phenomena leads to anomalies at magnetic and superconducting phase boundaries. Here we reveal that in Pr2Pt3Ge5 superconducting and multiple magnetic order are intertwined within the same HT-phase space, but remain completely decoupled. Our thermal conductivity measurements provide evidence for normal electrons in the superconducting phase from which…
We show how in principle a coherent coupling between two superconductors of opposite parity can be realized in a three-layer oxide heterostructure. Due to strong intraionic spin-orbit coupling in the middle layer, singlet Cooper pairs are converted into triplet ones and vice versa. This results in a large enhancement of the triplet superconductivity, persisting well above the native triplet critical temperature.
Weyl superconductors feature Weyl points at zero energy in the three-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone and arc states that connect the projections of these Weyl points on the surface. We report that higher-order Weyl superconductors can be realized in odd-parity topological superconductors with time-reversal symmetry being broken by periodic driving. Different from conventional Weyl points, the higher-order Weyl points in the bulk separate 2D first- and second-order topological phases, while on the surface, their projections are connected not only by conventional surface Majorana arcs, but also …
Carrier injection performed in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) hetero-structure junctions exhibited tunable resistance that was entirely different with behaviors of semiconductor devices. Tunable superconductivity in YBCO junctions, increasing over 20 K in transition temperature, has achieved by using electric processes. To our knowledge, this is the first observation that intrinsic property of high TC superconductors superconductivity can be adjusted as tunable functional parameters of devices. The fantastic phenomenon caused by carrier injection was discussed based on a proposed charge carr…
We show that a heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3 is a topological Weyl superconductor with tunable Weyl nodes. Adopting a generic order parameter in the E_2u representation allowed by nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry, we clarify unusual gap structure and associated topological properties. The pair creation, pair annihilation, and coalescence of Weyl nodes are demonstrated in the time-reversal symmetry broken B-phase. At most 98 point nodes compatible with Blount's theorem give rise to line node-like behaviors in low-energy excitations, consistent with experimental results. We also show an arc n…
Study of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials was initiated in 2006 by Hosono's group, and boosted in 2008 by the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 26 K in LaFeAsO1-xFx. Since then, enormous researches have been done on the materials, with Tc reaching as high as 55 K. Here, we review briefly experimental and theoretical results on atomic and electronic structures and magnetic and superconducting properties of FeAs-based superconductors and related compounds. We seek for clues for unconventional superconductivity in the materials.
The Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$ offers a rare opportunity to study the interplay between Weyl physics and superconductivity. Recent studies have found that Se substitution can boost the superconductivity up to 1.5K, but suppress the Td structure phase that is essential for the emergence of Weyl state. A microscopic understanding of possible coexistence of enhanced superconductivity and the Td phase has not been established so far. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a optimally doped new superconductor MoTe$_{1.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ with bulk Tc ~ 1.5K. By means of quasiparticle in…
We present magnetotransport evidence for antiferromagnetism in films of the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our results show clear signature of static antiferromagnetism up to optimal doping x=0.15, with a quantum phase transition close to x=0.16, and a coexistence of static antiferromagnetism and superconductivity for 0.12$\le$x$\le$0.15.
This is a "perspective" inspired by the forthcoming article, "What makes the $T_c$ of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO so high: a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo study," by Z-X. Li, F. Wang, H. Yao, and D-H. Lee, arXiv:1512.06179.
We performed thermal conductivity measurements on a single crystal of the ferromagnetic superconductorUCoGe under magnetic field. Two different temperature dependencies of the thermal conductivity are observed, for H//b linear at low magnetic field and quadratic for magnetic field larger than 1 Tesla. At the same field value, a plateau appears in the field dependency of the residual term of thermal conductivity. Such observations suggest a multigap superconductivity with a line of nodes in the superconducting gap.
The spin-triplet state is most likely realized in uranium ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe, UCoGe. The microscopic coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity means that the Cooper pair should be realized under the strong internal field due the ferromagnetism, leading to the spin-triplet state with equal spin pairing. The field-reinforced superconductivity, which is observed in all three materials when the ferromagnetic fluctuations are enhanced, is one of the strong evidences for the spin-triplet superconductivity. We present here the results of a newly discovered spin-tripl…
We report superconductivity in the ternary half-Heusler compound LuPtBi, with Tc = 1.0 K and Hc2 = 1.6 T. The crystal structure of LuPtBi lacks inversion symmetry, hence the material is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor. Magnetotransport data show semimetallic behavior in the normal state, which is evidence for the importance of spin-orbit interaction. Theoretical calculations indicate that the strong spin-orbit interaction in LuPtBi should cause strong band inversion, making this material a promising candidate for 3D topological superconductivity.
We study the superconducting instability mediated by spin fluctuations in the Eliashberg theory for a minimal two-band model of iron-based superconductors. While antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations can drive superconductivity (SC) as is well established, we find that spin fluctuations necessarily contain a contribution to suppress SC even though SC can eventually occur at lower temperatures. This self-restraint effect stems from a general feature of the spin-fluctuation mechanism, namely the repulsive pairing interaction, which leads to phase frustration of the pairing gap and consequently the…
Superconductivity originates from pairing of electrons. Pairing channel on Fermi surface and pairing glue are thus two pivotal issues for understanding a superconductor. Recently, high-temperature superconductivity over 40 K was found in electron-doped FeSe superconductors including K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe, and 1 monolayer FeSe thin film. However, their pairing mechanism remains controversial. Here, we studied the systematic evolution of electronic structure in potassium-coated FeSe single crystal. The doping level is controlled precisely by in situ evaporating potass…
Heavy-fermion superconductors are prime candidates for novel electron-pairing states due to the spin-orbital coupled degrees of freedom and electron correlations. Superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ discovered in 1979, which is a prototype of unconventional (non-BCS) superconductors in strongly correlated electron systems, still remains unsolved. Here we provide the first report of superconductivity based on the advanced first-principles theoretical approach. We find that the promising candidate is an $s_\pm$-wave state with loop-shaped nodes on the Fermi surface, different from the widely exp…
We utilize a 1d Hubbard model to show that the superconductivity in cuprate superconductors likely arises due to the orbital entanglement between holes in the copper oxide plane mediated by orbitally-selective charge hopping. The main role of doping required to achieve superconductivity in cuprates is to suppress the Mott correlations and orbital ordering. The proposed mechanism explains superconductivity in other unconventional superconductors, and provides guidance in the search for new high-temperature superconductors.
We show that dilute magnetic impurities in a conventional superconductor give origin to an odd-frequency component of superconductivity, manifesting itself in Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bands forming within the bulk superconducting gap. Our results are obtained in a general model solved within the dynamical mean field theory. By exploiting a disorder analysis and the limit to a single impurity, we are able to provide general expressions that can be used to extract explicitly the odd-frequency superconducting function from scanning tunneling measurements.
Vortex phase in a singlet superconductor in the absence of impurities is shown to be absolutely unstable with respect to the appearance of a triplet component which breaks both inversion and time-reversal symmetries of Cooper pairs. Symmetry breaking paramagnetic effects are demonstrated to be of the order of unity if the orbital upper critical field, Hc2(0), is of the order of Clogston paramagnetic limiting field, Hp. We suggest a generic phase diagram of such type-IV superconductor, which is singlet one at H=0 and characterized by mixed singlet-triplet order parameter with broken time-revers…
We show that, at weak to intermediate coupling, antiferromagnetic fluctuations enhance d-wave pairing correlations until, as one moves closer to half-filling, the antiferromagnetically-induced pseudogap begins to suppress the tendency to superconductivity. The accuracy of our approach is gauged by detailed comparisons with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The negative pressure dependence of Tc and the existence of photoemission hot spots in electron-doped cuprate superconductors find their natural explanation within this approach.
We investigate the superconducting gap function of topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. Temperature, magnetic field, and three-dimensional (3D) field-angle dependences of the specific heat prove that the superconductivity of PbTaSe$_2$ is fully-gapped, with two isotropic $s$-wave gaps. The pair-breaking effect is probed by systematically increasing non-magnetic disorders through H$^+$-irradiations. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, is found to be robust against disorders, which suggests that the pairing should be sign-preserved rather than sign-reversed.
We report the results of $^{77}$Se--nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in $α$-FeSe, which exhibits a similar crystal structure to the LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ superconductor and shows superconductivity at 8 K. The nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows $T^3$ behavior below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ without a coherence peak. The $T_1T=$ const. behavior, indicative of the Fermi liquid state, can be seen in a wide temperature range above $T_c$. The superconductivity in $α$-FeSe is also an unconventional one as well as LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and related materials. The Fe…
Magnetic-field-angle-resolved heat capacity of dimer-Mott organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$X$ is reported. Temperature and field dependence of heat capacity indicates that the superconductivity has line nodes on the Fermi surface, which is a typical feature of $d$-wave superconductivity. In-plane field-angle dependence exhibits fourfold oscillations as well as twofold oscillations due to anisotropy of superconducting gap functions. From analyses of the fourfold term, the gap symmetry is determined as $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$+$s_{\pm}$ for $X$=Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br and $d_{xy}$ for $X$=Ag(CN)$_2$H…
The electron paramagnetic resonance study for an organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$ reveals that superconductivity coexists uniformly with the charge ordered state in one material. In the charge ordered state, the interplane spin exchange is gapped, while the in-plane conductivity is not significantly modified. This anisotropic behavior is explained by the exotic charge ordered state, in which molecular-site selective carrier localization coexists with conducting carriers on other molecules. Relationship between superconductivity an…
Effects of inhomogeneous doping on the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors are studied within the framework of the t-J model. Especially, the boundary between two non-superconducting regions with doping rates much higher and lower than the optimal one is examined. It is found that, although there is no superconductivity in the bulk, a superconducting region appears at the boundary because singlet resonating valence bond order and holon condensation occur simultaneously in this region. The critical temperature of the induced superconductivity can be higher than that of the optimally doped sample…
Disorder in Weyl semimetals and superconductors is surprisingly subtle, attracting attention and competing theories in recent years. In this brief review, we discuss the current theoretical understanding of the effects of short-ranged, quenched disorder on the low energy-properties of three-dimensional, topological Weyl semimetals and superconductors. We focus on the role of non-perturbative rare region effects on destabilizing the semimetal phase and rounding the expected semimetal-to-diffusive metal transition into a cross over. Furthermore, the consequences of disorder on the resulting natu…
We report on a study of intrinsic superconductivity in a Weyl metal, i.e. a doped Weyl semimetal. Two distinct superconducting states are possible in this system in principle: a zero-momentum pairing BCS state, with point nodes in the gap function; and a finite-momentum FFLO-like state, with a full nodeless gap. We find that, in an inversion-symmetric Weyl metal the odd-parity BCS state has a lower energy than the FFLO state, despite the nodes in the gap. The FFLO state, on the other hand, may have a lower energy in a noncentrosymmetric Weyl metal, in which Weyl nodes of opposite chirality hav…
We show that Weyl superconductivity can be induced by finite supercurrent in noncentrosymmetric spin-orbit-coupled superconductors with line nodes. We introduce a three-dimensional tight-binding model of a tetragonal superconductor in a $D+p$-wave pairing state with a finite center-of-mass momentum, and elucidate that a line-nodal to point-nodal spectral transition occurs by applying an infinitesimal supercurrent. We also clarify that the higher-order effect in spin-orbit coupling is particularly important for this phenomenon. The point nodes are protected by topologically nontrivial Weyl char…
We propose that doped Weyl semimetals with four Weyl points are natural candidates to realize higher-order topological superconductors, which exhibit a fully gapped bulk while the surface hosts robust gapless chiral hinge states. We show that in such a doped Weyl semimetal, a featureless finite-range attractive interaction favors a $p+ip$ pairing symmetry. By analyzing its topological properties, we identify such a chiral pairing state as a higher-order topological superconductor, which depending on the existence of a four-fold roto-inversion symmetry $\mathsf{R}_{4z}$, is either intrinsic (me…
We study surface superconductivity involving the `drumhead' surface states of (doped) Weyl loop materials. The leading weak coupling instability in the bulk is toward a chiral superconducting order, which fully gaps the Fermi surface. In this state the surface also becomes superconducting, with $p+ip$ symmetry. We show that the surface SC state is "topological" as long as it is fully gapped, and the system traps Majoarana modes wherever a vortex line enters or exits the bulk. In contrast to true 2D $p+ip$ superconductors, these Majorana zero modes arise even in the "strong pairing" regime wher…
We introduce the concept of 3D Dirac (Weyl) superconductors (SC), which have protected bulk four(two)-fold nodal points and surface Andreev arcs at zero energy. We provide a sufficient criterion for realizing them in centrosymmetric SCs with odd-parity pairing and mirror symmetry, e.g., the nodal phases of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Pairs of Dirac nodes appear in a mirror-invariant plane when the mirror winding number is nontrivial. Breaking mirror symmetry may gap Dirac nodes producing a topological SC. Each Dirac node evolves to a nodal ring when inversion-gauge symmetry is broken. A Dirac node may…
We present an analytical low-energy theory of piezoelectric electron-phonon interactions in undoped Weyl semimetals, taking into account also Coulomb interactions. We show that piezoelectric interactions generate a long-range attractive potential between Weyl fermions. This potential comes with a characteristic angular anisotropy. From the one-loop renormalization group approach and a mean-field analysis, we predict that superconducting phases with either conventional s-wave singlet pairing or nodal-line triplet pairing could be realized for sufficiently strong piezoelectric coupling. For smal…
The effects of a strain-induced pseudomagnetic field on inter-node spin-triplet superconducting states in Weyl semimetals are studied by using the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism. It is found that the Cooper pairing with spins parallel to the pseudomagnetic field has the lowest energy among the spin-triplet states and its gap does not depend on the strength of the field. In such a state, both electric and chiral superconducting currents are absent. This is in contrast to the superconducting states with the spins of Cooper pairs normal to the field, which support a nonzero chiral current a…
We show that a Weyl superconductor can absorb light via a novel surface-to-bulk mechanism, which we dub the topological anomalous skin effect. This occurs even in the absence of disorder for a single-band superconductor, and is facilitated by the topological splitting of the Hilbert space into bulk and chiral surface Majorana states. In the clean limit, the effect manifests as a characteristic absorption peak due to surface-bulk transitions. We also consider the effects of bulk disorder, using the Keldysh response theory. For weak disorder, the bulk response is reminiscent of the Mattis-Bardee…
The FeSe superconductor and its related systems have attracted much attention in the iron-based superconductors owing to their simple crystal structure and peculiar electronic and physical properties. The bulk FeSe superconductor has a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of ~8 K; it can be dramatically enhanced to 37 K at high pressure. On the other hand, its cousin system, FeTe, possesses a unique antiferromagnetic ground state but is non-superconducting. Substitution of Se by Te in the FeSe superconductor results in an enhancement of Tc up to 14.5 K and superconductivity can persist …
We predict that junctions between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a superconductor provide a robust platform to create a one-dimensional topological superconducting state. Its emergence does not require the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling nor non-collinear magnetism, but arises solely from repulsive electronic interactions on interfacial solitonic states. We demonstrate that a topological superconducting state is generated by repulsive interactions at arbitrarily small coupling strength, and that the size of the topological gap rapidly saturates to the one of the parent trivial su…
We study superconducting states of doped inversion-symmetric Weyl semimetals. Specifically, we consider a lattice model realizing a Weyl semimetal with an inversion symmetry and study the superconducting instability in the presence of a short-ranged attractive interaction. With a phonon-mediated attractive interaction, we find two competing states: a fully gapped finite-momentum (FFLO) pairing state and a nodal even-parity pairing state. We show that, in a BCS-type approximation, the finite-momentum pairing state is energetically favored over the usual even-parity paired state and is robust ag…
The mechanism of high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains an outstanding issue in condensed matter physics. The electronic structure, in particular the Fermi surface topology, is considered to play an essential role in dictating the superconductivity. Recent revelation of distinct electronic structure and possible high temperature superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc above 65 K in the single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate provides key information on the roles of Fermi surface topology and interface in inducing or enhancing super…
Nematic superconductivity is a novel class of superconductivity characterized by spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking in the superconducting gap amplitude and/or Cooper-pair spins with respect to the underlying lattice symmetry. Doped Bi2Se3 superconductors, such as CuxBi2Se3, SrxBi2Se3, and NbxBi2Se3, are considered as candidates for nematic superconductors, in addition to the anticipated topological superconductivity. Recently, various bulk probes, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, specific heat, magnetotransport, magnetic torque, and magnetization, have consistently revealed two-fold …
Despite intensive searches for topological superconductors, the realization of topological superconductivity remains under debate. Previous proposals for the topological $s$-wave, $p$-wave, and chiral $d$-wave superconductivity have both advantages and disadvantages. In this review, we discuss two-dimensional topological superconductivity based on the non-chiral $d$-wave superconductors. It is shown that the noncentrosymmetric $d$-wave superconductors become topological superconductors under an infinitesimal Zeeman field without fine-tuning of parameters. Floquet engineering for introducing th…
We show two-dimensional "strong" topological superconductivity in d-wave superconductors (SCs). Although the topological invariant of the bulk wave function cannot be defined in d_{x^2-y^2}-wave and d_{xy}-wave SCs because of nodal excitations, the bulk energy spectrum of d-wave SCs on a substrate is fully gapped in a magnetic field. Then the superconducting state is specified by a nontrivial Chern number, and hence topologically nontrivial properties are robust against disorders and interactions. We discuss high-temperature topological superconductivity in cuprate SCs recently fabricated on a…
As an analogy to the Weyl point in k-space, we search for energy levels which close at a single point as a function of a three dimensional parameter space. Such points are topologically protected in the sense that any perturbation which acts on the two level subsystem can be corrected by tuning the control parameters. We find that parameter controlled Weyl points are ubiquitous in semiconductor-superconductor quantum dots and that they are deeply related to Majorana zero modes. In this paper, we present several semiconductor-superconductor quantum dot devices which host parameter controlled We…
Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials either having no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family of materials, LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe (all lacking inversion symmetry), belong to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry a…
Momentum transport is anomalous in chiral $p+ip$ superfluids and superconductors in the presence of textures and superflow. Using the gradient expansion of the semi-classical approximation, we show how gauge and Galilean symmetries induce an emergent curved spacetime with torsion and curvature for the quasirelativistic low-energy Majorana-Weyl quasiparticles. We explicitly show the emergence of the spin-connection and curvature, in addition to torsion, using the superfluid hydrodynamics. The background constitutes an emergent quasirelativistic Riemann-Cartan spacetime for the Weyl quasiparticl…
We study the interplay of interactions and topology in a pseudo-spin Weyl system, obtained from a minimally modified Hubbard model, using the numerically exact auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method complemented by mean-field theory. We find that the pseudo-spin plays a key role in the pairing mechanism, and its effect is reflected in the structure of the pairing amplitude. An attractive on-site interaction leads to pairing between quasiparticles carrying opposite spin and opposite topological charge, resulting in the formation of real-spin singlet pairs that are a mixture of pseudo-spin s…
We study three dimensional systems where the parent metallic state contains a loop of Weyl or Dirac points. We introduce the minimal $\vec{k} \cdot \vec{p}$ Hamiltonian , and discuss its symmetries. Guided by this symmetry analysis, we classify the superconducting instabilities that may arise. For a doped Weyl loop material, we argue that - independent of microscopic details - the leading superconducting instability should be to a fully gapped chiral superconductor in three dimensions- an unusual state made possible only by the non-trivial topology of the Fermi surface. This state - which we d…
We consider a three-dimensional model of coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. The analytically soluble model discussed here reliably reproduces the features of the band structure of crystalline polyacetylene as obtained from density-functional theory. We show that when a certain inter-chain coupling is sufficiently increased, the system develops a ring of Weyl nodes. We argue that such an increase could be achieved experimentally by intercalation or extreme pressure. With the addition of a simple intra-orbital pairing term we find that the system supports an exotic superconducting state …
Employing a combination of symmetry analysis, low-energy modeling, and ab initio simulations, we predict the presence of magnetic-field-induced Weyl points close to the Fermi level in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. Depending on the relative strengths of the magnetic field and of the spin-orbit coupling, the Weyl fermions can carry a topological charge of $\pm1$ or $\pm2$, making CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ a rare realization of a double-Weyl semimetal. We further predict experimental manifestations of these Weyl points, both in bulk properties, such as the anomalous Hall effect, and in surface properties, such as the e…
