Recent and on-going large ground-based multi-object spectroscopic surveys allow to significantly increase the sample of spectroscopic binaries to get insight into their statistical properties. We investigate the repeated spectral observations of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) internal data release 5 to identify and characterize spectroscopic binaries with one visible component (SB1) in fields covering the discs, the bulge, the CoRot fields, and stellar clusters and associations. A statistical chi2-test is performed on spectra of the iDR5 sub-sample of approximately 43500 stars characterized by at least 2 observations and a S/N > 3. Our sample of RV variables is cleaned from contamination by pulsation/convection-induced variables using Gaia DR2 parallaxes and photometry. Monte-Carlo simulations using the SB9 catalogue of spectroscopic orbits allow to estimate our detection efficiency and to correct the SB1 rate to evaluate the GES SB1 binary fraction and its dependence with effective temperature and metallicity. We find 641 (resp., 803) FGK SB1 candidates at the 5 sigma (resp., 3 sigma) level. The orbital-period distribution is estimated from the RV standard-deviation distribution and reveals that the detected SB1 probe binaries with log(P[d]) < 4. We estimate the global GES SB1 fraction to be in the range 7-14% with a typical uncertainty of 4%. The GES SB1 frequency decreases with metallicity at a rate of -9+/-3%/dex in the metallicity range -2.7<FeH<+0.6. This anticorrelation is obtained with a confidence level higher than 93% on a homogeneous sample covering spectral types FGK and a large range of metallicities. When the present-day mass function is accounted for, this rate turns to 4+/-2%/dex with a confidence level higher than 88%. In addition we provide the variation of the SB1 fraction with metallicity separately for F, G, and K spectral types, as well as for dwarf and giant primaries.
To use libraries of observed stellar spectra, one needs to know the atmospheric parameters of the stars associated to those spectra. It is, however, hard to know what are the real levels of precision and accuracy of these parameters. To overcome this very same problem in a stellar survey, the Gaia-ESO Survey implements a comprehensive calibration effort together with the use of multiple parallel analysis methodologies. Here, we discuss the multiple analyses approach and the effort to understand the accuracy and precision of the provided stellar atmospheric parameters.
The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is obtaining high quality spectra of $\sim$10$^{5}$ stars in our Galaxy, providing an homogeneous and unique overview of all the main components of the Milky Way, its formation history and the evolution of young, mature and ancient Galactic populations. Our group is in charge of the early-type massive stars that define the youngest population in the survey. In this contribution, we present the results of the quantitative spectroscopic analysis of O-type stars in the Carina Nebula within the Gaia-ESO Survey. For this aim, we have used FASTWIND and CMFGEN stellar atmosp…
We report photometry and spectroscopy of the outburst of the young stellar object ESO-Halpha 99. The outburst was first noticed in Gaia alert Gaia18dvc and later by ATLAS. We have established the outburst light curve with archival ATLAS ``Orange'' filter photometry, Gaia data, new V-band photometry, and J, H, and K_s photometry from IRIS and UKIRT. The brightness has fluctuated several times near the light curve maximum. The TESS satellite observed ESO-Halpha 99 with high cadence during one of these minor minima and found brightness fluctuations on timescales of days and hours. Imaging with UK…
The extensive stellar spectroscopic datasets that are available for studies in Galactic Archeaology thanks to, for example, the Gaia-ESO Survey, now benefit from having a significant number of targets that overlap with asteroseismology projects such as Kepler, K2 and CoRoT. Combining the measurements from spectroscopy and asteroseismology allows us to attain greater accuracy with regard to the stellar parameters needed to characterise the stellar populations of the Milky Way. The aim of this Gaia-ESO Survey special project is to produce a catalogue of self-consistent stellar parameters by comb…
The Gaia benchmark stars are stars with very precise stellar parameters that cover a wide range in the HR diagram at various metallicities. They are meant to be good representative of typical FGK stars in the Milky Way. Currently, they are used by several spectroscopic surveys to validate and calibrate the methods that analyse the data. I review our recent activities done for these stars. Additionally, by applying our new method to find stellar twins on the Gaia-ESO Survey, I discuss how good representatives of Milky Way stars the benchmark stars are and how they distribute in space.
The nearby (distance~350-400 pc), rich Vela OB2 association, includes $γ^2$ Velorum, one of the most massive binaries in the solar neighbourhood and an excellent laboratory for investigating the formation and early evolution of young clusters. Recent Gaia-ESO survey observations have led to the discovery of two kinematically distinct populations in the young (10-15 Myr) cluster immediately surrounding $γ^2$ Velorum. Here we analyse the results of Gaia-ESO survey observations of NGC 2547, a 35 Myr cluster located two degrees south of $γ^2$ Velorum. The radial velocity distribution of lithium-ri…
It is well known that newly formed planetary systems undergo processes of orbital reconfiguration and planetary migration. As a result, planets or protoplanetary objects may accrete onto the central star, being fused and mixed into its external layers. If the accreted mass is sufficiently high and the star has a sufficiently thin convective envelope, such events may result in a modification of the chemical composition of the stellar photosphere in an observable way, enhancing it with elements that were abundant in the accreted mass. The recent Gaia-ESO Survey observations of the 10-20 Myr old …
Stars observed in the field of an open cluster are ideal for a controlled test of chemical tagging. Using chemical tagging, one should identify the cluster members, i.e., those stars of similar chemical composition, if their composition is indeed different from that of all the non-member stars of the field. Moreover, the abundance-based membership can be checked against membership based on radial velocities and proper motions. Here, I report preliminary results of such an experiment using data from the Gaia-ESO Survey. Although the three membership criteria usually agree, a few interesting exa…
Featuring greatly improved astrometry and precise radial velocities (RVs), the second data release (DR2) from Gaia affords us a unique opportunity to test the validity of samples of stellar wide binaries. In a previous work, we presented a set of wide binaries identified in the joint Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution catalog. Here, we use DR2 to confirm the low contamination rate of this sample, thereby verifying the effectiveness of our algorithm for application to DR2 data.
We report 20 new lithium-rich giants discovered within the Gaia-ESO Survey, including the first Li-rich giant with evolutionary stage confirmed by CoRoT data. Atmospheric parameters and abundances were derived in model atmosphere analyses using medium-resolution GIRAFFE or high-resolution UVES spectra. These results are part of the fifth internal data release of Gaia-ESO. The Li abundances were corrected for non-LTE effects. We used Gaia DR2 parallaxes to estimate distances and luminosities. The giants have A(Li) > 2.2 dex. The majority of them (14 out of 20 stars) are in the CoRoT fields. Fou…
We describe the methodologies that, taking advantage of Gaia-DR1 and the Gaia-ESO Survey data, enable the comparison of observed open star cluster sequences with stellar evolutionary models. The final, long-term goal is the exploitation of open clusters as age calibrators. We perform a homogeneous analysis of eight open clusters using the Gaia-DR1 TGAS catalogue for bright members, and information from the Gaia-ESO Survey for fainter stars. Cluster membership probabilities for the Gaia-ESO Survey targets are derived based on several spectroscopic tracers. The Gaia-ESO Survey also provides the …
In anticipation of the Gaia astrometric mission, a sample of spectroscopic binaries is being observed since 2010 with the Sophie spectrograph at the Haute--Provence Observatory. Our aim is to derive the orbital elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) with an accuracy sufficient to finally obtain the masses of the components with relative errors as small as 1 % when combined with Gaia astrometric measurements. In order to validate the masses derived from Gaia, interferometric observations are obtained for three SB2s in our sample with F-K components: HIP 14157, HIP 20601 and HIP …
The combination of precise radial velocities from multi-object spectroscopy and highly accurate proper motions from Gaia DR2 opens up the possibility for detailed 3D kinematic studies of young star forming regions and clusters. Here, we perform such an analysis by combining Gaia-ESO Survey spectroscopy with Gaia astrometry for ~900 members of the Lagoon Nebula cluster, NGC 6530. We measure the 3D velocity dispersion of the region to be $5.35^{+0.39}_{-0.34}$~km~s$^{-1}$, which is large enough to suggest the region is gravitationally unbound. The velocity ellipsoid is anisotropic, implying that…
Gaia provided the largest-ever catalogue of white dwarf stars. We use this catalogue, along with the third public data release of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), to identify new eclipsing white dwarf binaries. Our method exploits light curve statistics and the Box Least Squares algorithm to detect periodic light curve variability. The search revealed 18 new binaries, of which 17 are eclipsing. We use the position in the Gaia H-R diagram to classify these binaries and find that the majority of these white dwarfs have main sequence companions. We identify one system as a candidate eclipsing…
Context. Recent metallicity determinations in young open clusters and star-forming regions suggest that the latter may be characterized by a slightly lower metallicity than the Sun and older clusters in the solar vicinity. However, these results are based on small statistics and inhomogeneous analyses. The Gaia-ESO Survey is observing and homogeneously analyzing large samples of stars in several young clusters and star-forming regions, hence allowing us to further investigate this issue. Aims. We present a new metallicity determination of the Chamaeleon I star-forming region, based on the prod…
Previous analyses of various standard candles observed by the Gaia satellite have reported statistically significant systematics in the parallaxes that have improved from $\sim$250 $μ$as in the first data release (DR1) to 50--80 $μ$as in the second data release (DR2). Here we examine the parallaxes newly reported in the Gaia early third data release (EDR3) using the same sample of benchmark eclipsing binaries (EBs) we used to assess the DR1 and DR2 parallaxes. We find a mean offset of $-37\pm20$ $μ$as (Gaia$-$EB), which decreases to $-15\pm18$ $μ$as after applying the corrections recommended b…

Our aim is to derive the orbital elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) with an accuracy sufficient to finally obtain the masses of the components with relative errors as small as 1 % when the astrometric measurements of Gaia are taken into account. In this paper we present the results from five years of observations of 10 SB2 systems with periods ranging from 37 to 881 days. Using the TODMOR algo…
Trumpler 20 is an old open cluster (OC) located toward the Galactic centre, at about 3 kpc from the Sun and $\sim$7 kpc from the Galactic centre. Its position makes this cluster particularly interesting in the framework of the chemical properties of the Galactic disc because very few old OCs reside in the inner part of the disc. For this reason it has been selected as a cluster target of the Gaia-ESO Survey, and spectra of many stars in the main sequence and red clump phases are now available. Moreover, although it has been studied by several authors in the past, no consensus on the evolutiona…
Astrometry and photometry from {\it Gaia} and spectroscopic data from the {\it Gaia}-ESO Survey (GES) are used to identify the lithium depletion boundary (LDB) in the young cluster NGC 2232. A specialised spectral line analysis procedure was used to recover the signature of undepleted lithium in very low luminosity cluster members. An age of $38\pm 3$ Myr is inferred by comparing the LDB location in absolute colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) with the predictions of standard models. This is more than twice the age derived from fitting isochrones to low-mass stars in the CMD with the same models.…
Double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) are one of the main sources of stellar masses, as additional observations are only needed to give the inclinations of the orbital planes in order to obtain the individual masses of the components. For this reason, we are observing a selection of SB2s using the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Haute-Provence observatory in order to precisely determine their orbital elements. Our objective is to finally obtain masses with an accuracy of the order of one percent by combining our radial velocity (RV) measurements and the astrometric measurements that will come …

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES) is conducting a large-scale study of multi-element chemical abundances of some 100 000 stars in the Milky Way with the ultimate aim of quantifying the formation history and evolution of young, mature and ancient Galactic populations. However, in preparing for the analysis of GES spectra, it has been noted that atomic oscillator strengths of important Fe I lines required to correctly model stellar line intensities are missing from the atomic database. Here, we present new experimental oscillator strengths derived from branching fractions and level …
Spectroscopy from the final internal data release of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) has been combined with Gaia EDR3 to assign membership probabilities to targets observed towards 63 Galactic open clusters and 7 globular clusters. The membership probabilities are based chiefly on maximum likelihood modelling of the 3D kinematics of the targets, separating them into cluster and field populations. From 43211 observed targets, 13985 are identified as highly probable cluster members ($P>0.9$), with an average membership probability of 0.993. The addition of GES radial velocities successfully drives dow…
We present a high resolution synthetic spectral library, INTRIGOSS, designed for studying FGK stars. The library is based on atmosphere models computed with specified individual element abundances via ATLAS12 code. Normalized SPectra (NSP) and surface Flux SPectra (FSP), in the 4830-5400 A, wavelength range, were computed with the SPECTRUM code. INTRIGOSS uses the solar composition by Grevesse et al. 2007 and four [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios and consists of 15,232 spectra. The synthetic spectra are computed with astrophysical gf-values derived by comparing synthetic predictions with a very hig…
We present the abundance analysis for a sample of 7 red giant branch stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 4372 based on UVES spectra acquired as part of the Gaia-ESO Survey. This is the first extensive study of this cluster from high resolution spectroscopy. We derive abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Fe, Cr, Ni, Y, Ba, and La. We find a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -2.19 $\pm$ 0.03 and find no evidence for a metallicity spread. This metallicity makes NGC 4372 one of the most metal-poor galactic globular clusters. We also find an α-enhancement typical of halo globular clusters at…
Pismis 18 is a moderately populated, intermediate-age open cluster located within the solar circle at a Galactocentric distance of about 7 kpc. Few open clusters have been studied in detail in the inner disc region before the Gaia-ESO Survey. New data from the Gaia-ESO Survey allowed us to conduct an extended radial velocity membership study as well as spectroscopic metallicity and detailed chemical abundance measurements for this cluster. Gaia-ESO Survey data for 142 potential members, lying on the upper MS and on the red clump, yielded radial velocity measurements, which, together with prope…
The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) observed many open clusters as part of its programme to spectroscopically characterise the various Milky Way populations. GES spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry from its second data release are used here to assign membership probabilities to targets towards 32 open clusters with ages from 1-3800 Myr, based on maximum likelihood modelling of the 3D kinematics of the cluster and field populations. From a parent catalogue of 14398 individual targets, 5033 stars with uniformly determined 3D velocities, $T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$ and chemistry are assigned cluster membership wi…
The information contained in the Gaia Second Data Release (DR2) allows to search for the unusual objects with the pre-selected properties, literally constructing the stars with the desired characteristics. This work describes the idea of method, its implementation and the results of searching for the ultracool compact binaries within 200 parsec distance. The search in the selected range of absolute magnitudes (M=11..13) has yielded the discovery of both expected and unexpected objects. We found two cataclysmic variables with the extreme IR versus UV color index at 126 and 103 parsecs, two ecli…
The 3rd data release of the Gaia mission includes orbital solutions for $> 10^5$ single-lined spectroscopic binaries, representing more than an order of magnitude increase in sample size over all previous studies. This dataset is a treasure trove for searches for quiescent black hole + normal star binaries. We investigate one population of black hole candidate binaries highlighted in the data release: sources near the main sequence in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) with dynamically-inferred companion masses $M_2$ larger than the CMD-inferred mass of the luminous star. We model light curves,…
The hunt for compact objects is on. Rarely seen massive binaries with a compact object are a crucial phase in the evolution towards compact object mergers. In Gaia data release 3 (DR3), the first Gaia astrometric orbital solutions for binary sources will become available. We investigate how many black holes (BH) with massive main-sequence dwarf companions (OB+BH binaries) are expected to be detected as binaries in DR3 and at the end of the nominal 5-yr mission (DR4). We estimate the fraction of identifiable OB+BH binaries and discuss the distributions of the masses of both components and the o…
Ultracompact binaries with orbital periods less than a few hours will dominate the gravitational wave signal in the mHz regime. Until recently, 10 systems were expected have a predicted gravitational wave signal strong enough to be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the so-called `verification binaries'. System parameters, including distances, are needed to provide an accurate prediction of the expected gravitational wave strength to be measured by LISA. Using parallaxes from {\sl Gaia} Data Release 2 we calculate signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) for $\approx$50 verificat…
We use the data provided by the Gaia Early Data Release 3 to search for a highly-complete volume-limited sample of unresolved binaries consisting of a white dwarf and a main sequence companion (i.e. WDMS binaries) within 100pc. We select 112 objects based on their location within the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, of which 97 are new identifications. We fit their spectral energy distributions (SED) with a two-body fitting algorithm implemented in VOSA (Virtual Observatory SED Analyser) to derive the effective temperatures, luminosities and radii (hence surface gravities and masses) of both compo…
Knowledge of the abundance distribution of star forming regions and young clusters is critical to investigate a variety of issues, from triggered star formation and chemical enrichment by nearby supernova explosions to the ability to form planetary systems. In spite of this, detailed abundance studies are currently available for relatively few regions. In this context, we present the analysis of the metallicity of the Gamma Velorum cluster, based on the products distributed in the first internal release of the Gaia-ESO Survey. The Gamma Velorum candidate members have been observed with FLAMES, …
The discovery of lithium-rich giants contradicts expectations from canonical stellar evolution. Here we report on the serendipitous discovery of 20 Li-rich giants observed during the Gaia-ESO Survey, which includes the first nine Li-rich giant stars known towards the CoRoT fields. Most of our Li-rich giants have near-solar metallicities, and stellar parameters consistent with being before the luminosity bump. This is difficult to reconcile with deep mixing models proposed to explain lithium enrichment, because these models can only operate at later evolutionary stages: at or past the luminosit…
We use Gaia-ESO Survey iDR4 data to explore the Mg-Al anti-correlation in globular clusters, that were observed as calibrators, as a demonstration of the quality of Gaia-ESO Survey data and analysis. The results compare well with the available literature, within 0.1 dex or less, after a small (compared to the internal spreads) offset between the UVES and the GIRAFFE data of 0.10-0.15 dex was taken into account. In particular, we present for the first time data for NGC 5927, one of the most metal-rich globular clusters studied in the literature so far with [Fe/H]=-0.49 dex, that was included to…
Rapidly rotating, low-mass members of eclipsing binary systems have measured radii significantly larger than predicted by standard models. It has been proposed that magnetic activity is responsible for radius inflation. By estimating the radii of low-mass stars in three young clusters (NGC 2264, NGC 2547, NGC 2516, with ages of 5, 35 and 140 Myr respectively), we aim to establish whether similar radius inflation is seen in single, magnetically active stars. We use radial velocities from the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) and published photometry to establish cluster membership and combine GES measureme…
The astrometric space mission Gaia is expected to detect a large number of brown dwarf binary systems with close orbits and determine astrometric orbit solutions. This will provide key information for the formation and evolution of brown dwarfs, such as the binary frequency and dynamical masses. Known brown dwarf binaries with orbit constraints from other techniques will play an important role. We are carrying out one of the most precise and long-lasting radial velocity surveys for brown dwarf binaries in the Cha I star-forming region at the VLT. We were able to add two orbit determinations to…
This paper describes the analysis of UVES and GIRAFFE spectra acquired by the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey in the fields of young clusters whose population includes pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. Both methods that have been extensively used in the past and new ones developed in the contest of the Gaia-ESO survey enterprise are available and used. The internal precision of these quantities is estimated by inter-comparing the results obtained by such different methods, while the accuracy is estimated by comparison with independent external data, like effective temperature and surface gra…
The Gaia-ESO Survey: Calibrating the lithium-age relation with open clusters and associations. II. Expanded cluster sample and final membership selection
Lithium rich stars in globular clusters are rare. In fact, only 14 have been found so far, in different evolutionary phases from dwarfs to giants. Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain this enhancement, but it is still an open problem. Using spectra collected within the Gaia-ESO Survey, obtained with the GIRAFFE spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescope, we present the discovery of the first Li-rich star in the cluster NGC 1261, the second star known in the red giant branch bump phase. The star shows an extreme Li overabundance of A(Li)_LTE=3.92\pm0.14, corresponding to A(Li)_N…
Previous studies of open clusters have shown that lithium depletion is not only strongly age dependent but also shows a complex pattern with other parameters that is not yet understood. For pre- and main-sequence late-type stars, these parameters include metallicity, mixing mechanisms, convection structure, rotation, and magnetic activity. We perform a thorough membership analysis for a large number of stars observed within the Gaia-ESO survey (GES) in the field of 20 open clusters, ranging in age from young clusters and associations, to intermediate-age and old open clusters. Based on the par…
Possible M-type contact binaries were investigated by selecting W UMa-type variables with orbital periods below the 0.22-day cutoff. Gaia parallaxes were combined with Gaia and 2MASS photometry to obtain G and J-band absolute magnitudes of 674 red variable stars catalogued as contact binaries in the VSX database. The absolute magnitude of main sequence cool dwarfs varies strongly with spectral type, which was used to create a selection of 218 systems with primaries potentially of spectral types M0-M3. Lightcurves of the 46 systems with lowest near-infrared luminosities were inspected individua…
A small fraction of the halo field is made up of stars that share the light element (Z<=13) anomalies characteristic of second generation globular cluster (GC) stars. The ejected stars shed light on the formation of the Galactic halo by tracing the dynamical history of the clusters, which are believed to have once been more massive. Some of these ejected stars are expected to show strong Al enhancement at the expense of shortage of Mg, but until now no such star has been found. We search for outliers in the Mg and Al abundances of the few hundreds of halo field stars observed in the first eigh…
Detecting New Visual Binaries in Gaia DR3 with Gaia and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Photometry II. Speckle Observations of 16 Low-Separation Systems
Pre-main sequence models with inflated radii are needed to simultaneously reproduce the colour-magnitude diagram and the lithium depletion pattern in young open clusters. We tested a new set of PMS models including radius inflation due to starspots or magnetic inhibition of convection, using five clusters observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey, spanning the age range ~10-100 Myr where such effects could be important. Gaia-ESO radial velocities were combined with Gaia EDR3 astrometry to obtain clean lists of high-probability members for the five clusters. A Bayesian maximum likelihood method was adopt…
We present the first results of the EMBLA survey (Extremely Metal-poor BuLge stars with AAOmega), aimed at finding metal-poor stars in the Milky Way bulge, where the oldest stars should now preferentially reside. EMBLA utilises SkyMapper photometry to pre-select metal-poor candidates, which are subsequently confirmed using AAOmega spectroscopy. We describe the discovery and analysis of four bulge giants with -2.72<=[Fe/H]<=-2.48, the lowest metallicity bulge stars studied with high-resolution spectroscopy to date. Using FLAMES/UVES spectra through the Gaia-ESO Survey we have derived abundances…
The orbital motion of non-contact double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2), with periods of a few tens of days to several years, holds unique accurate informations on individual stellar masses, that only long-term monitoring can unlock. The combination of radial velocity measurements from high-resolution spectrographs and astrometric measurements from high-precision interferometers allows the derivation of SB2 components masses down to the percent precision. Since 2010, we observed a large sample of SB2 with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence, aiming at the derivati…
We report the discovery of two Li-rich giants, with A(Li) ~ 1.50, in an analysis of a sample of 40 giants of the open cluster Trumpler 20 (with turnoff mass ~ 1.8 Msun). The cluster was observed in the context of the Gaia-ESO Survey. The atmospheric parameters and Li abundances were derived using high-resolution UVES spectra. The Li abundances were corrected for nonlocal thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) effects. Only upper limits of the Li abundance could be determined for the majority of the sample. Two giants with detected Li turned out to be Li rich: star MG 340 has A(Li) non-LTE = 1.5…
The Gaia-ESO survey (GES) is now in its fifth and last year of observations, and has already produced tens of thousands of high-quality spectra of stars in all Milky Way components. This paper presents the strategy behind the selection of astrophysical calibration targets, ensuring that all GES results on radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and chemical abundance ratios will be both internally consistent and easily comparable with other literature results, especially from other large spectroscopic surveys and from Gaia. The calibration of GES is particularly delicate because of: (i) the…
Aim of this work is to determine C, N, and O abundances in stars of Galactic open clusters of the Gaia-ESO survey and to compare the observed abundances with those predicted by current stellar and Galactic evolution models. In this pilot paper, we investigate the first three intermediate-age open clusters. High-resolution spectra, observed with the FLAMES-UVES spectrograph on the ESO VLT telescope, were analysed using a differential model atmosphere method. Abundances of carbon were derived using the C2 band heads at 5135 and 5635.5 Å. The wavelength interval 6470- 6490 Å, with CN features, wa…
We present photometric observations in Sloan filters g', i' of the eclipsing W UMa stars USNO-A2.0 1350-17365531, V471 Cas, V479 Lac and V560 Lac. The sinusoidal-like O-C diagram of V471 Cas shows presence of third body with mass of 0.12 Msun (red dwarf) at distance 897 Rsun. The O-C diagram of V479 Lac reveals period decreasing. The results of the light curve solutions are: (i) The targets are overcontact binaries with small fill-out factors; (ii) Their components are F-K stars, comparable in size, whose temperature differences are below 80 K; (iii) All targets undergo partial eclipses and to…
The Doppler effect is commonly used to infer the velocity difference between stars based on the relative shifts in the rest-frame wavelengths of their spectral features. In wide binaries, the difference in gravitational redshift from the surfaces of the constituent stars with distinct compactness dominates at separations above 0.01 pc. I suggest that this effect became apparent for wide pairs in the Gaia eDR3 catalogue but incorrectly interpreted as a possible modification of Newtonian gravity in the internal kinematics of very wide binaries.
