We investigate optical absorption spectra obtained through time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) based on nonempirical hybrid functionals that are designed to correctly reproduce the dielectric function. The comparison with state-of-the-art $GW$ calculations followed by the solution of the Bethe-Sapeter equation (BSE-$GW$) shows close agreement for both the transition energies and the main features of the spectra. We confront TD-DFT with BSE-$GW$ by focusing on the model dielectric function and the local exchange-correlation kernel. The present TD-DFT approach achieves the accuracy of BSE-$GW$ at a fraction of the computational cost.
A simple effective screening parameter for screened range-separated hybrid is constructed from the compressibility sum rule in the context of linear-response time-dependent Density Functional Theory. When applied to the dielectric-dependent hybrid (DDH), it becomes remarkably accurate for bulk solids compared to those obtained from fitting with the model dielectric function or depending on the valence electron density of materials. The present construction of the screening parameter is simple and realistic. The screening parameter developed in this way is physically appealing and practically u…
The material class of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites has risen rapidly from a virtually unknown material in photovoltaic applications a short 7 years ago into a ~20% efficient thin-film solar cell material. As promising as this class of materials is, however, there are limitations associated with its poor long-term stability, non-optimal band gap, presence of environmentally-toxic Pb element, etc. We herein apply a functionality-directed theoretical materials selection approach as a filter for initial screening of the compounds that satisfy the desired intrinsic photovoltaic functionalit…
In two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic metal-halide perovskites, the intrinsic optical lineshape reflects multiple excitons with distinct binding energies, each dressed differently by the hybrid lattice. Given this complexity, a fundamentally far-reaching issue is how Coulomb-mediated many-body interactions --- elastic scattering such as excitation-induced dephasing, inelastic exciton bimolecular scattering, and multi-exciton binding --- depend upon the specific exciton-lattice coupling. We report the intrinsic and density-dependent exciton pure dephasing rates and their dependence on tem…
In bulk and low-dimensional extended systems, the screening of excitations by the electron cloud is a key feature governing spectroscopic properties. Widely used computational approaches, especially in the framework of many-body perturbation theory, such as the GW approximation and the resulting approximate Bethe-Salpeter equation, are explicitly formulated in terms of the screened Coulomb interaction. In the present work we explore the effect of screening in absorption and electron energy loss spectroscopy, concentrating on the effect of local distortions on the screening and elucidating the …

Electric fields arising from the distribution of charge in metal halide perovskite solar cells are critical for understanding the many weird and wonderful optoelectronic properties displayed by these devices. Mobile ionic defects are thought to accumulate at interfaces to screen electric fields within the bulk of the perovskite semiconductor on application of external bias, but tools are needed to directly probe the dynamics of the electric field in this process. Here we show that electroabsorption measurements allow the electric field within the active layer to be tracked as a function of fre…
The large Landé g-factor, high spin-orbit coupling, and low effective mass of the two-dimensional electron gas in InSb quantum wells combined with proximal superconductivity may realize a scalable platform for topological quantum computation. Aluminum thin films directly deposited on top of InSb planar structures result in the formation of a reactive AlInSb layer at the interface. This interlayer progressively consumes the whole Al film, resulting in a disordered AlInSb layer after few months at room temperature. We report on a heterostructure design that results in a significant increase of t…
Angular dependent core-hole screening effects have been found in the cobalt K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of LiCoO2, using high-resolution data and parameter-free GGA+U calculations. The Co 1s core-hole on the absorber causes strong local attraction. The core-hole screening on the nearest neighbours cobalt induces a 2 eV shift in the density of states with respect to the on-site 1s-3d transitions, as detected in the Co K pre-edge spectrum. Our DFT+U calculations reveal that the off-site screening is different in the out-of-plane direction, where a 3 eV shift is visible in both calculations …
Accurate and efficient calculations of absorption spectra of molecules and materials are essential for the understanding and rational design of broad classes of systems. Solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) for electron-hole pairs usually yields accurate predictions of absorption spectra, but it is computationally expensive, especially if thermal averages of spectra computed for multiple configurations are required. We present a method based on machine learning to evaluate a key quantity entering the definition of absorption spectra: the dielectric screening. We show that our approach yie…

We present a first-principles investigation of the electronic and optical properties of hybrid organic-inorganic interfaces consisting of MoS$_2$ monolayer and the $π$-conjugate molecules pyrene and pyridine. For both hybrid systems, the quasi-particle band structure obtained from the $G_0W_0$ approximation shows -- in contrast to density-functional theory -- level alignment of type II, owing to the mutual dynamical screening of the interface constituents. $\textit{Ab initio}$ calculations of the absorption spectrum based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation reveal besides intra-layer excitons on th…
We investigate spectral behavior of phonon spectral functions in an interacting multi-component hot carrier plasma. Dielectric polarization functions are formulated so that they satisfy Dyson equations of the effective interactions among plasma components. We find a useful sum rule giving simple relation between plasma-species resolved dielectric functions. Spectral analysis of various phonon spectral functions is performed considering carrier-phonon channels of polar and nonpolar optical phonons, acoustic deformation-potential, and piezoelectric Coulomb couplings. Effects of phonon self-energ…
We study selected transition metal related point defects in silicon and silicon carbide semiconductors by a range separated hybrid density functional (HSE06). We find that HSE06 does not fulfill the generalized Koopmans' Theorem for every defect which is due to the self-interaction error in the functional in such cases. Restoring the so-called generalized Koopmans' Condition with a simple correction in the functional can eliminate this error, and brings the calculated charge transition levels remarkably close to the experimental data as well as to the calculated quasi-particle levels from many…
Density functional theory screening of the hybrid double perovskites (MA)2BIBiX6 (BI=K,Cu,Ag,Tl; X=Cl,Br,I) shows that systems with band gaps similar to those of the MAPbX3 lead compounds can be expected for BI=Cu,Ag,Tl. Motivated by these findings, (MA)2TlBiBr6, isoelectronic with MAPbBr3, was synthesised and found to have a band gap of ~2.0eV.
We propose a systematic procedure for constructing effective lattice fermion models for narrow-band compounds on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations. The method is illustrated for the series of transition-metal (TM) oxides: SrVO$_3$, YTiO$_3$, V$_2$O$_3$, and Y$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$. It consists of three parts, starting from LDA. (i) construction of the kinetic energy Hamiltonian using downfolding method. (ii) solution of an inverse problem and construction of the Wannier functions (WFs) for the given kinetic energy Hamiltonian. (iii) calculation of screened Coulomb intera…
The metal-organic framework (MOF) MFU-4l containing Co(II) centers and Cl- ligands has recently shown promising redox activity. Aiming for further improved MOF catalysts for oxidation processes employing molecular oxygen we present a density-functional theory (DFT) based computational screening approach to identify promising metal center and ligand combinations within the MFU-4l structural family. Using the O2 binding energy as a descriptor for the redox property, we show that relative energetic trends in this descriptor can reliably be obtained at the hybrid functional DFT level and using sma…

The accuracy of the constrained random phase approximation(cRPA) method is examined in multi-orbital Hubbard models containing all possible on-site density-density interactions. Using DMFT, we show that the effective model constructed using cRPA fails to reproduce the spectral properties of the original full model in a wide parameter range. By comparing quantities such as the density of states and quasiparticle residues of the full and the effective models, we show that cRPA systematically overestimates the screening of Hubbard U for DMFT impurity solvers. We instead propose a new method to in…
Moiré superlattices of two-dimensional van der Waals materials have emerged as a powerful platform for designing electronic band structures and discovering emergent physical phenomena. A key concept involves the creation of long-wavelength periodic potential and moiré bands in a crystal through interlayer hybridization when two materials are overlaid. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on spatially periodic dielectric screening to create moiré bands in a monolayer semiconductor. It relies on reduced dielectric screening of the Coulomb interactions in monolayer semiconductors and their en…
We have investigated the influence of the substrate on the fluorescence of adsorbed organic molecules. Monolayer films of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-diimide (PTCDI), a supramolecular network formed from PTCDI and melamine, and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-dianhydride (PTCDA) have been deposited on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The principal peaks in the fluorescence spectra of these films were red-shifted by up to 0.37 eV relative to published measurements for molecules in helium droplets. Smaller shifts (~0.03 eV) arising from interactions between neighbouring m…
A self-consistent scheme for determining the optimal fraction of exact exchange for full-range hybrid functionals is presented and applied to the calculation of band gaps and dielectric constants of solids. The exchange-correlation functional is defined in a similar manner to the PBE0 functional, but the mixing parameter is set equal to the inverse macroscopic dielectric function and it is determined self-consistently by computing the optimal dielectric screening. We found excellent agreement with experiments for the properties of a broad class of systems, with band gaps ranging between 0.7 an…
Exciton dissociation at heterojunctions in photovoltaic devices is not completely understood despite being fundamentally necessary to generate electrical current. One of the fundamental issues for ab initio calculations is that hybrid interfaces combining materials with Wannier-Mott excitons and those with Frenkel excitons can easily require thousands of atoms to encompass the exciton-wave function. The problem is further exacerbated by a large permittivity difference at the interface, which requires meso-scale boundary conditions to accurately predict electrostatic potentials. For these reaso…
Finite-momentum dielectric function and excitonic effects from time-dependent density-functional theory with dielectrically screened hybrid functionals
We have performed a computational screening of topological two-dimensional (2D) materials from the Computational 2D Materials Database (C2DB) employing density functional theory. A full \textit{ab initio} scheme for calculating hybrid Wannier functions directly from the Kohn-Sham orbitals has been implemented and the method was used to extract $\mathbb{Z}_2$ indices, Chern numbers and Mirror Chern numbers of 3331 2D systems including both experimentally known and hypothetical 2D materials. We have found a total of 46 quantum spin Hall insulators, 7 quantum anomalous Hall insulators and 9 cryst…
At carrier densities above the Mott density Coulomb screening destroys the exciton resonance. This, together with band-gap renormalization and band filling, severely affects the optical spectra. We have experimentally studied these effects by ultrafast pump-probe reflectivity measurements on a ZnO single crystal at various wavelengths around the exciton resonance and in a broad carrier-density range. Theoretically we determined the Mott density in ZnO to be $1.5\times10^{24}$ m$^{-3}$ at 300 K. Taking a field-theoretical approach, we derived and solved the Bethe-Salpeter ladder equation and we…
We consider the effect of periodic scalar and vector potentials generated by periodic deformations of the graphene crystal lattice, on the energy spectrum of electrons. The dependence of electron velocity near the Dirac point on the periodic perturbations of different types is discussed. We also investigated the effect of screening of the scalar potential by calculating the dielectric function as a function of the wave length of the periodic potential. This calculation shows that the periodic scalar field is strongly suppressed by the screening. Using the dependence of electron velocity on the…
Atomically thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit exceptionally strong Coulomb interaction between charge carriers due to the two-dimensional carrier confinement in connection with weak dielectric screening. The van der Waals nature of interlayer coupling makes it easy to integrate TMDC layers into heterostructures with different dielectric or metallic substrates. This allows to tailor electronic and optical properties of these materials, as Coulomb interaction inside atomically thin layers is very susceptible to screening by the environment. Here we theoretically inve…
Dynamical screening of the Coulomb interactions in correlated electron systems results in a low-energy effective problem with a dynamical Hubbard interaction U(omega). We propose a Green's function ansatz for the Anderson impurity problem with retarded interactions, in which the Green's function factorizes into a contribution stemming from an effective static-U problem and a bosonic high-energy part introducing collective plasmon excitations. Our approach relies on the scale separation of the low-energy properties, related to the instantaneous static U, from the intermediate to high energy fea…
The idea of combining different two-dimensional (2D) crystals in van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) has led to a new paradigm for band structure engineering with atomic precision. Due to the weak interlayer couplings, the band structures of the individual 2D crystals are largely preserved upon formation of the heterostructure. However, regardless of the details of the interlayer hybridisation, the size of the 2D crystal band gaps are always reduced due to the enhanced dielectric screening provided by the surrounding layers. The effect can be on the order of electron volts, but its precise …
