A dynamic mitigation is presented for sausage and kink instability growths of a z-current driven magnetized plasma column. We have proposed a dynamic mitigation method based on a phase control to smooth plasma non-uniformities and to mitigate the instability growth in perturbed plasma systems. In this paper we found that a wobbling motion of the z-current electron axis induces a phase-controlled perturbation, so that the growths of the sausage and kink instabilities are successfully mitigated. In general, plasma instabilities emerge from perturbations, and the perturbation phase is normally unknown. However, if the perturbation phase is known or actively imposed by, for example, a designed driver wobbling behavior, the instability growth would be controlled and mitigated by a superimposition of the perturbations imposed. The results in this paper demonstrate that the wobbling z-current electron beam would provide an improvement in the plasma column stability and uniformity.
The low-frequency instability of a magnetized plasma column and the anomalous radial plasma convection are shown to be linked with the existence of a radial cross-field current along a plasma channel rotating around the central magnetized plasma. The direct observation of the rotating plasma is obtained using an ultra-fast intensified camera. The ionizing electrons injected along the axis of the plasma column contribute to the accumulation of negative charges when the axial collector is at floating potential. The required neutrality leads to the continuous radial expulsion of energetic electro…
First experimental measurements are presented for the kink instability in a linear plasma column which is insulated from an axial boundary by finite sheath resistivity. Instability threshold below the classical Kruskal-Shafranov threshold, axially asymmetric mode structure and rotation are observed. These are accurately reproduced by a recent kink theory, which includes axial plasma flow and one end of the plasma column that is free to move due to a non-line-tied boundary condition.
The radial characteristic of a partially magnetized plasma column created by a hot cathode filament is presented. It is found that in the absence of magnetic field, plasma potential and density varies similarly according to Boltzmann distribution. However as the magnetic field increases, a clear divergence is seen as plasma density becomes more pronounced in the centre whereas a corresponding minima is observed in plasma potential; thus limiting the radial diffusion of positive ions towards the grounded sidewalls. A phenomenological model based on short-circuiting effect is developed, which fa…
A spherical tokamak (ST) with a plasma center column (PCC) can be formed via driven magnetic relaxation of a screw pinch plasma. An ST-PCC could in principle eliminate many problems associated with a material center column, a key weakness of the ST reactor concept. This work summarizes the design space for an ST-PCC in terms of flux amplification, aspect ratio, and elongation, based on the zero-beta Taylor-relaxed analysis of Tang & Boozer [Phys. Plasmas 13, 042514 (2006)]. The paper will discuss (1) equilibrium and stability properties of the ST-PCC, (2) issues for an engineering design, and …
Photoionization by a femtosecond, terawatt laser pulse generates a plasma column in a neutral ambient gas. Velocity of electrons, pushed by the laser ponderomotive force along the column surface, couples to the the radial density gradient at the column boundary, generating an azimuthally polarized THz rotational current (RC). The same mechanism produces the low-frequency RC in a leaky plasma channel. Applying external voltage to the channel induces a radially non-uniform electron flow (direct current) and a constant, azimuthally polarized magnetic field. Coupling them to the electron density p…
Spectroscopic measurements of the magnetic field evolution in a Z-pinch throughout stagnation and with particularly high spatial resolution reveal a sudden current redistribution from the stagnating plasma (SP) to a low density plasma (LDP) at larger radii, while the SP continues to implode. Based on the plasma parameters it is shown that the current is transferred to an increasing-conductance LDP outside the stagnation, a process likely to be induced by the increasing impedance of the SP. Since an LDP often exists around imploding plasmas and in various pulsed-power systems, such a fast curre…
The ability to separate large volumes of mixed species based on atomic mass appears desirable for a variety of emerging applications with high societal impact. One possibility to meet this objective consists in leveraging mass differential effects in rotating plasmas. Beyond conventional centrifugation, rotating plasmas offer in principle additional ways to separate elements based on mass. Single ion orbits show that ion radial mass separation in a uniform magnetized plasma column can be achieved by applying a tailored electric potential profile across the column, or by driving a rotating magn…
The low-frequency instability of a cylindrical poorly magnetized plasma with an inward-directed radial electric field is studied changing the gas pressure and the ion cyclotron frequency. The unstable frequency always decreases when the gas pressure is increased indicating collisional effects. At a fixed pressure, the unstable frequency increases with the magnetic field when the B-field is low and decreases at larger magnetic field strength. We find that the transition between these two regimes is obtained when the ion cyclotron frequency equals the ion-neutrals collision frequency. This is in…
Maintaining a discharge using a travelling electromagnetic wave results in a linear decrease in electron density along the plasma column. This distribution corresponds to the power dissipated by the wave to heat electrons in the gas
Spectral properties of the x-ray pulses, generated by perfectly uniform cylindrical implosions of tungsten plasma with parameters typical of wire array z-pinches, are investigated under the simplifying assumption that the final stage of the kinetic-to-radiant energy conversion is not affected by the magnetic field. The x-ray emission is shown to be generated within a narrow (sub-micron) radiation-dominated stagnation shock front with a "supercritical" amplitude. The structure of the stagnation shock is investigated by using two independent radiation-hydrodynamics codes, and by constructing an …
We propose a setup for positron acceleration consisting of an electron driver and a laser pulse creating a two-fold plasma column structure. The resulting wakefield is capable of accelerating positron bunches over long distances even when evolution of the driver is considered. The scheme is studied by means of particle-in-cell simulations. Further, the analytical expression for the accelerating and focusing fields are obtained, showing the equilibrium lines along which the witness bunch is accelerated.
In this work, we present the results of two-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of a hohlraum target whose outgoing radiation is used to produce a homogeneously ionized carbon plasma for ion-beam stopping measurements. The cylindrical hohlraum with gold walls is heated by a frequency-doubled ($λ_l = 526.5$ $μm$) $1.4$ $ns$ long laser pulse with the total energy of $E_l = 180$ $J$. At the laser spot, the peak matter and radiation temperatures of, respectively, $T \approx 380$ $eV$ and $T_r \approx 120$ $eV$ are observed. X-rays from the hohlraum heat the attached carbon foam with a …
The vertical motion of a tokamak plasma is analytically modelled during its non-linear phase by a free-moving current-carrying rod inductively coupled to a set of fixed conducting wires or a cylindrical conducting shell. The solutions capture the leading term in a Taylor expansion of the Green's function for the interaction between the plasma column and the surrounding vacuum vessel. The plasma shape and profiles are assumed not to vary during the vertical drifting phase such that the plasma column behaves as a rigid body. In the limit of perfectly conducting structures, the plasma is prevente…
The wave propagation and power deposition in blue-core helicon plasma are computed referring to recent experiments. It is found that the radial profile of wave electric field peaks off-axis during the blue-core formation, and the location of this peak is very close to that of particle transport barrier observed in experiment; the radial profile of wave magnetic field shows multiple radial modes inside the blue-core column, which is consistent with the experimental observation of coherent high $m$ modes through Bessel function. The axial profiles of wave field indicate that, once the blue-core …
Plasma accelerators sustain extreme field gradients, and potentially enable future compact linear colliders. Although tremendous progress has been achieved in accelerating electron beams in a plasma accelerator, positron acceleration with collider-relevant parameters is challenging. A recently proposed positron acceleration scheme relying on the wake generated by an electron drive beam in a plasma column has been shown to be able to accelerate positron witness beams with low emittance and low energy spread. However, since this scheme relies on cylindrical symmetry, it is possibly prone to tran…
We study the dynamic contraction a self-sustained glow discharge in air in a rectangular duct with convective cooling. A two dimensional numerical model of the plasma contraction was developed in a cylindrical frame. The process is described by a set of time-dependent continuity equations for the electrons, positive and negative ions; gas and vibrational temperature; and equations which account for the convective heat and plasma losses by the transverse flux. Transition from the uniform to contracted state was analyzed. It was shown that such transition experiences a hysteresis, and that the c…
A meteoroid penetrating the Earth's atmosphere leaves behind a trail of dense plasma in the E-region ionosphere, a region where electrons are strongly magnetized while ions are demagnetized due to their frequent collisions with neutrals. While radar measurements of meteor trail evolution have been collected and used to infer meteor and atmospheric properties since the 1950s, no accurate quantitative model of trail fields and diffusion exists. This paper describes a theory and simulations of trail plasma physics which applies to the majority of small meteors. Unlike earlier papers, our theory a…
Plasma wakefield acceleration is a method for accelerating particle beams using electromagnetic fields that are orders of magnitude larger than those found in conventional radio frequency cavities. The core component of a plasma wakefield accelerator is the plasma source, which ranges from millimeter-scale gas jets used in laser-driven experiments, to the ten-meter-long rubidium cell used in the AWAKE experiment. The density of the neutral gas is a controlled input to the experiment, but the density of the plasma after ionization depends on many factors. AWAKE uses a high-energy proton beam to…
The magnetohydrodynamic kink instability is observed and identified experimentally as a poloidal flux amplification mechanism for coaxial gun spheromak formation. Plasmas in this experiment fall into three distinct regimes which depend on the peak gun current to magnetic flux ratio, with (I) low values resulting in a straight plasma column with helical magnetic field, (II) intermediate values leading to kinking of the column axis, and (III) high values leading immediately to a detached plasma. Onset of column kinking agrees quantitatively with the Kruskal-Shafranov limit, and the kink acts as …
The electrostatic model proposed by Poulos [Phys. Plasmas (2019), $\mathbf{26}$, 022104] to describe the electric potential distribution across and along a magnetized plasma column is used to shed light onto the ability to control perpendicular electric fields. The effective electrical connection between facing end-electrodes is shown to be conditioned upon the smallness of a dimensionless parameter $τ$ function of the plasma column aspect ratio and the square root of the conductivity ratio $σ_\perp/σ_{\parallel}$. The analysis of a selected set of past end-electrodes biasing experiments confi…
Breaking of a plasma wave driven by a long beam of charged particles results in electron jets escaping from the plasma column and forming an electron halo. For plasma densities less than or of the order of the beam density, this process is well described by a semi-analytical model, which agrees with simulations and allows to calculate the position of wavebreaking points and determine the regions around the plasma column occupied by the halo.
A one-dimensional Particle-In-Cell Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC-MCC) method has been used to model the development and propagation of ionization waves in neon and argon positive columns. Low current conditions are considered, i.e. conditions where stepwise ionization or Coulomb collisions are negligible (linear ionization rate). This self-consistent model describes the development of self-excited moving striations, reproduces many of the well-known experimental characteristics (wavelength, spatial resonances, potential drop over one striation, electron "bunching" effect) of the ionization waves…
A simple analytical model of the barrier discharge in a long gap between opposing plane electrodes is developed. It is shown that the plasma density becomes uniform over large part of the gap in the course of the discharge development, so that one can speak of a formation of a dynamic positive column. The column completely controls the dynamics of the barrier discharge and determines such characteristics as the discharge current, discharge duration, light output, etc. Using the proposed model, all discharge parameters can be easily evaluated
Spontaneous spin-up are widely observed in tokamak plasmas, which is crucially important for plasma confinement. A kinetic theory is proposed to show that a toroidal rotation of core plasma is induced by the topological transition of orbits driven by turbulent diffusion in a collisionless tokamak plasma. The theoretical prediction agrees well with the well-known Rice-scaling of intrinsic core plasma flow. This new theory predicts an intrinsic core parallel flow of $\sim 100km/s$ for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.
We describe the experimental verification of lattice resonances in two-dimensional photonic crystals constructed from an array of gaseous plasma columns. Enhancements are seen in the extinction of normal incidence transverse electric electromagnetic waves when the localized surface plasmon modes of the plasma columns are shifted into the vicinity of the photonic crystal Bragg resonances. Simulations and experiments are in reasonable agreement and confirm the appearance of a Fano-like profile with deep and broad extinction bands. The broadening of the spectra as surface plasmon modes come into …
We present results of twisted plasma waves driven by twisted ponderomotive force. With beating of two, co-propagating, Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) orbital angular momentum (OAM) laser pulses with different frequencies and also different twist indices, we can get twisted ponderomotive force. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to demonstrate the twisted plasma waves driven by lasers. The twisted plasma waves have an electron density perturbation with a helical rotating structure. Different from the predictions of the linear fluid theory, the simulation results show a nonlinear ro…
The current-driven electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) instability is studied in presence of a transverse dc electric fields in a collisional magnetized dusty plasma. We derive the appropriate charging equation self consistently by using the Vlasov equation.
It is found that the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic drift drives a generic plasma pinch fluxes of particle, energy and momentum through the Stokes-Einstein relation. The proposed theoretical model applies for both electrons and ions, trapped particles and passing particles.
We propose a new approach to high-intensity laser-driven electron acceleration in a plasma. Here, we demonstrate that a plasma wave generated by a stimulated forward-scattering of an incident laser pulse can be in a longest acceleration phase with an incident laser wave. This is why the plasma wave has the maximum amplification coefficient which is determined by the breakdown (overturn) electric field in which the acceleration of injected relativistic beam electrons occurs. We estimate qualitatively the acceleration parameters of relativistic electrons in the field of a plasma wave generated a…
Photon bursts with a wavelength smaller than the plasma inter-particle distance can drive plasma wakes via Compton scattering. We investigate this fundamental process analytically and numerically for different photon frequencies, photon flux, and plasma magnetization. Our results show that Langmuir and extraordinary modes are driven efficiently when the photon energy density lies above a certain threshold. The interaction of photon bursts with magnetized plasmas is of distinguished interest as the generated extraordinary modes can convert into pure electromagnetic waves at the plasma/vacuum bo…
Generation of terahertz electromagnetic radiation due to coalescence of upper-hybrid waves in the long-wavelength region of strong plasma turbulence driven by a high-current relativistic electron beam in a magnetized plasma is investigated. The width of frequency spectrum as well as angular characteristics of this radiation for various values of plasma density and turbulence energy are calculated using the simple theoretical model adequately describing beam-plasma experiments at mirror traps. It is shown that the power density of electromagnetic emission at the second harmonic of plasma freque…
We identify the desired characteristics and parameters of a beta>1 magnetized plasma, possibly with highly tangled, open field lines, that could be a suitable target to be compressed to fusion conditions by a spherically imploding plasma liner [S. C. Hsu et al., IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 40, 1287 (2012)] formed by merging hypersonic plasma jets. This concept is known as plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF). We set requirements on the target and liner such that (a) compressional heating dominates over thermal transport in the target, and (b) magnetic amplification due to compression …
We explore the role of the background plasma ion motion in self-modulated plasma wakefield accelerators. We employ J. Dawson's plasma sheet model to derive expressions for the transverse plasma electric field and ponderomotive force in the narrow bunch limit. We use these results to determine the on-set of the ion dynamics, and demonstrate that the ion motion could occur in self-modulated plasma wakefield accelerators. Simulations show the motion of the plasma ions can lead to the early suppression of the self-modulation instability and of the accelerating fields. The background plasma ion mot…
Runaway particles can be produced in plasmas with large electric fields. Here we address the possibility that such runaway ions and electrons excite Alfvénic instabilities. The magnetic perturbation induced by these modes can enhance the loss of runaways. This may have important implications for the runaway electron beam formation in tokamak disruptions.
Temporal evolution of the inhomogeneous energy density driven instability (IEDDI) is examined in presence of a nonuniform transverse dc electric field in collisional magnetized plasma cylinder. Using experimentally known parameters relevant to IEDDI, we have estimated the growth rate for $ν$=1, 2 and 3 nonlocal eigenmodes.
New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous plasma are identified. These modes represent transient $ω\simeq k_{\Vert }v_{th}^{(e,i)}$ sound oscillations in magnetized plasma that are kinetically destabilized via Landau interactions. Electron and ion sound branches are unstable for large values of the Larmor radius parameter $% k_{\bot}ρ_{e,i}\gg 1,$ respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific plasma response that significantly deviates from Boltzmann distribution in the region $k_{\bot}ρ_{i,e}\gg 1$ . Pacs: 52.35 Kt, 52.35 Qz
A long, relativistic charged particle beam propagating in a plasma is subject to the self-modulation instability. This instability is analyzed and the growth rate is calculated, including the phase relation. The phase velocity of the accelerating field is shown to be significantly less than the drive beam velocity. These results indicate that the energy gain of a plasma accelerator driven by a self-modulated beam will be severely limited by dephasing. In the long-beam, strongly-coupled regime, dephasing is reached in less than four e-foldings, independent of beam-plasma parameters.
We advance a theory of quasistatic approximation and investigate the excitation of nonlinear plasma waves by the driving beam of ultrarelativistic electrons using novel electrostatic-like particle- in-cell code. Assuming that the beam occupies an infinitesimally small volume, we find the radius and length of the plasma bubble formed in the wake of the driver for varying values of the beam charge. The mechanism of the bubble formation is explained by developing simple models of the bubble at large charges. Plasma electrons expelled by the driver charge excite secondary plasma waves which compli…
Scaling or smiliarity laws of plasmas are of interest if lab size plasma sources are to be scaled for industrial processes. Ideally, the discharge parameters of the scaled plasmas are predictable and the fundamental physical processes are unaltered. Naturally, there are limitations and ranges of validity. Scaling laws for direct current glow discharges are well known. If a well diagnosed discharge is scaled, the field strength in the positive column, the gas amplification and the normal current density can easily be estimated. For non-stationary high power discharges like high power impulse ma…
Compton scattering of gamma rays propagating in a pair plasma can drive the formation of a relativistic electron positron beam. This process is scrutinised theoretically and numerically via particle-in-cell simulations. In addition, we determine in which conditions the beam can prompt a beam-plasma instability and convert its kinetic energy into magnetic energy. We argue that such conditions can be met at the photosphere radius of bright Gamma Ray Bursts.
Generation of electromagnetic radiation near the second harmonic of the plasma frequency during the injection of an electron beam into a rippled-density plasma channel is investigated using both analytical theory and particle-in-cell simulations. The generating scheme is based on nonlinear interaction of the most unstable beam-driven potential plasma wave with its satellite arising due to scattering on the longitudinal modulation of plasma density. Resulting superluminal oscillations of electric current in a finite-size plasma channel radiate electromagnetic waves via the same mechanism which …
We present a new mechanism of attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses generation from a relativistic laser-driven overdense plasma surfaces in the wavebreaking regime. Through particle-in-cell simulations and analysis, we demonstrate that the observed ultrashort XUV emission for the parameters we considered is predominantly due to a strong plasma-density oscillation subsequent to wavebreaking. The coupling of the strong density variation and the transverse fields in the front surface layer gives rise to the transmitted emission with frequencies mainly around the local plasma frequency. Thi…
A theory for the generation of current in a toroidal plasma by radio-frequency waves is presented. The effect of an opposing electric field is included, allowing the case of time varying currents to be studied. The key quantities that characterize this regime are identified and numerically calculated. Circuit equations suitable for use in ray-tracing and transport codes are given.
A hybrid kinetic-fluid model is used to study ionization waves (striations) in a low-current plasma column of DC discharges in noble gases. Coupled solutions of a kinetic equation for electrons, a drift-diffusion equation of ions, and a Poisson equation for the electric field are obtained to clarify the nature of plasma stratification in the positive column and near-electrode effects. A simplified two-level excitation-ionization model is used for the conditions when the nonlinear effects due to stepwise ionization, gas heating, and Coulomb interactions among electrons are negligible. It is con…

The power of second harmonic electromagnetic emission is calculated for the case when strong plasma turbulence is excited by a powerful electron beam in a magnetized plasma. It is shown that the simple analytical model of strong plasma turbulence with the assumption of a constant pump power is able to explain experimentally observed bursts of electromagnetic radiation as a consequence of separate collapse events. It is also found that the electromagnetic emission power calculated for three-wave interaction processes occurring in the long-wavelength part of turbulent spectrum is in order-of-mag…
In this work we investigate a numerical model of a coaxial RF-driven plasma jet operated at atmospheric pressure. Due to the cylindrical symmetry an adequate 2-D representation of the otherwise 3-dimensional structure is used. A helium-oxygen chemistry reaction scheme is applied. We study the effect of secondary electrons emitted at the inner electrode as well as the inserted dielectric tube and discuss their impact on the discharge behavior. We conclude that a proper choice of materials can improve the desired mode of operation of such plasma jets in terms of materials and surface processing.
The nonlinear propagation of small but finite amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) in an ion-beam driven plasma with Boltzmannian electrons, positive ions and stationary charged dust grains, is studied by using the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT). It is shown that there exist two critical values $(γ_{c1}$ and $γ_{c2})$ of ion-beam to ion phase speed ratio $(γ)$, beyond which the beam generated solitons are not possible. The effects of the parameters, namely $γ$, the ratio of the ion-beam to plasma ion density $(μ_{i})$, the dust to ion density ratio $(μ_{d})$ as well as th…
The stability theory of the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is developed for the case when the electron quiver velocity in RF wave is of the order of or is larger than the electron thermal velocity. The theory predicts the existence the instabilities of the ICP which are driven by the current formed in the skin layer by the accelerated electrons, which move relative ions under the action of the ponderomotive force.
