Perturbo is a software package for first-principles calculations of charge transport and ultrafast carrier dynamics in materials. The current version focuses on electron-phonon interactions and can compute phonon-limited transport properties such as the conductivity, carrier mobility and Seebeck coefficient. It can also simulate the ultrafast nonequilibrium electron dynamics in the presence of electron-phonon scattering. Perturbo uses results from density functional theory and density functional perturbation theory calculations as input, and employs Wannier interpolation to reduce the computational cost. It supports norm-conserving and ultrasoft pseudopotentials, spin-orbit coupling, and polar electron-phonon corrections for bulk and 2D materials. Hybrid MPI plus OpenMP parallelization is implemented to enable efficient calculations on large systems (up to at least 50 atoms) using high-performance computing. Taken together, Perturbo provides efficient and broadly applicable ab initio tools to investigate electron-phonon interactions and carrier dynamics quantitatively in metals, semiconductors, insulators, and 2D materials.
This paper presents a fast method for global search of atomic structures at ab initio level. The structures global optimization (SGO) engine consists of a high-efficiency differential evolution algorithm, accelerated local relaxation methods and an ultrafast plane-wave density functional theory code run on GPU machines. It can search the global-minimum configurations of crystals, two-dimensional materials and quantum clusters without symmetry restriction in a very short time (half or several hours). The engine is also able to search the energy landscape of a given system, which is useful for e…
Optimizing ferroelectrics for contemporary high-frequency applications asks for the fundamental understanding of ferroelectric switching and domain wall (DW) motion in ultrafast field pulses while the microscopic understanding of the latter is so far incomplete. To close this gap in knowledge, ab initio-based molecular dynamics simulations are utilized to analyze the dynamics of 180$^\grad# DWs in the prototypical ferroelectric material BaTiO 3 . How ultrafast field application initially excites the dipoles in the system and how they relax to their steady state via transient negative capacitan…
Laser melting of semiconductors has been observed for almost 40 years; surprisingly, it is not well understood where most theoretical simulations show a laser-induced thermal process. $\textit{Ab initio}$ nonadiabatic simulations based on real-time time-dependent density functional theory reveal intrinsic nonthermal melting of silicon, at a temperature far below the thermal melting temperature of 1680 K. Both excitation threshold and time evolution of diffraction intensity agree well with experiment. Nonthermal melting is attributed to excitation-induced drastic changes in bonding electron den…
Time-dependent density functional theory is implemented in an all electron solid-state code for the case of fully non-collinear spins. We use this to study laser induced demagnetization in Fe, Co and Ni. It is shown that this demagnetization is a two-step process: excitation of a fraction of electrons followed by spin-flip transitions of the remaining localized electrons. These results successfully explain several experimental features such as the time-lag between the start of the pulse and demagnetization and spin-flip excitations dominating the physics. We further show that it is possible to…
We theoretically investigate the generation of ultrafast currents in insulators induced by strong few-cycle laser pulses. Ab initio simulations based on time-dependent density functional theory give insight into the atomic-scale properties of the induced current signifying a femtosecond-scale insulator-metal transition. We observe the transition from nonlinear polarization currents during the laser pulse at low intensities to tunnelinglike excitation into the conduction band at higher laser intensities. At high intensities, the current persists after the conclusion of the laser pulse considere…
Using an ultrashort laser pulse we explore {\it ab-initio} the spin dynamics of Gd$_x$(FeCo)$_{1-x}$ at femtosecond time scales. Optical excitations are found to drive charge from Fe majority $d$-states to the unoccupied Gd $f$-minority states, with $f$-electron character excited occupation lagging behind that of the $d$-electron character, leading to substantial demagnetisation of both species while leaving the global moment almost unchanged. For $x > 0.33$ this results in the creation of an ultrafast ferromagnetic (FM) transient by the end of the laser pulse, with the Gd demagnetization rate…
We report on {\it ab-initio} simulations of the quantum dynamics of electronic charge and spin when subjected to intense laser pulses. By performing separate calculations for a Ni thin film and bulk Ni, we conclude that surface effects have a dramatic influence on amplifying the laser induced demagnetization. We show that the reason for this amplification is due to increased spin-currents on the surface of the thin film. This enhancement is a direct consequence of the broken symmetry originating from the surface formation. We find that the underlying physics of demagnetization, during the earl…
We report a computational theoretical investigation of electron spin-flip scattering induced by the electron-phonon interaction in the transition-metal ferromagnets bcc Fe, fcc Co and fcc Ni. The Elliott-Yafet electron-phonon spin-flip scattering is computed from first-principles, employing a generalized spin-flip Eliashberg function as well as ab initio computed phonon dispersions. Aiming at investigating the amount of electron-phonon mediated demagnetization in femtosecond laser-excited ferromagnets, the formalism is extended to treat laser-created thermalized as well as nonequilibrium, nont…
Spin relaxation and decoherence is at the heart of spintronics and spin-based quantum information science. Currently, theoretical approaches that can accurately predict spin relaxation of general solids including necessary scattering pathways and capable for ns to ms simulation time are urgently needed. We present a first-principles real-time density-matrix approach based on Lindblad dynamics to simulate ultrafast spin dynamics for general solid-state systems. Through the complete first-principles descriptions of pump, probe and scattering processes including electron-phonon, electron-impurity…
We employed ab-initio molecular dynamics to directly simulate the effects of Ag alloying ($\sim5%$ Ag concentration) on the phase change properties of Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$. The short range order is preserved, whereas a slight improvement in the chemical order is observed. A slight decrease in the fraction of tetrahedral Ge (sp$^{3}$ bonding) is reflected in the reduction of the optical band gap and in the increased dielectric constant. Simulations of the amorphous to crystalline phase change cycle revealed the fact that the crystallization speed in Ag$_{0.5}$Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ is no …
Excitation of a metallic ferromagnet such as Ni with an intensive femtosecond laser pulse causes an ultrafast demagnetization within approximately 300 fs. It was proposed that the ultrafast demagnetization measured in femtosecond magneto-optical experiments could be due to relativistic light-induced processes. We perform an ab initio investigation of the influence of relativistic effects on the magneto-optical response of Ni. To this end, we develop, first, a response theory formulation of the additional appearing ultra-relativistic terms in the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformed Dirac Hamiltonian d…
Ultrafast laser measurements probe the non-equilibrium dynamics of excited electrons in metals with increasing temporal resolution. Electronic structure calculations can provide a detailed microscopic understanding of hot electron dynamics, but a parameter-free description of pump-probe measurements has not yet been possible, despite intensive research, because of the phenomenological treatment of electron-phonon interactions. We present ab initio predictions of the electron-temperature dependent heat capacities and electron-phonon coupling coefficients of plasmonic metals. We find substantial…
Many important ultrafast phenomena take place in the liquid phase. However, there is no practical theory to predict how liquids respond to intense light. Here, we propose an $ab~initio$ accurate method to study the non-perturbative interaction of intense pulses with a liquid target to investigate its high-harmonic emission. We consider the case of liquid water, but the method can be applied to any other liquid or amorphous system. The liquid water structure is reproduced using Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations in a periodic supercell. Then, we employ real-time time-dependent densit…
We use ultrafast electron crystallography to study structural changes induced in graphite by a femtosecond laser pulse. At moderate fluences of ~< 21mJ/cm^2, lattice vibrations are observed to thermalize on a time scale of ~8ps. At higher fluences approaching the damage threshold, lattice vibration amplitudes saturate. Following a marked initial contraction, graphite is driven nonthermally into a transient state with sp^3-like character, forming interlayer bonds. Using ab initio density functional calculations, we trace the governing mechanism back to electronic structure changes following the…
Despite intense experimental effort, theoretical proposals and modeling approaches, a lack of consensus exists about the intrinsic mechanisms driving ultrafast magnetization dynamics in 3$d$ ferromagnets. In this work, we find evidence of electron-phonon mediated spin-flip as the driving mechanism for the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in all three 3$d$ ferromagnets; nickel, iron and cobalt. We use a microscopic three temperature model with parameters calculated from first-principles, which has been validated by direct comparison to the electron and lattice dynamics extracted from previous e…
In this work, we have systematically studied the role of point defects in the recombination time of monolayer MoS$_2$ using time-dependent ab initio non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Various types of point defects, such as S vacancy, S interstitial, Mo vacancy and Mo interstitial have been considered. We show that defects strongly accelerate the electron-hole recombination, especially interstitial S atoms do that by 3 orders of magnitude higher compared to pristine MoS$_2$. Mo defects (both vacancy and interstitial) introduce a multitude of de-excitation pathways via various defect…
The magnetization response of bulk ferromagnets after excitation by an ultrashort optical pulse is calculated using a dynamical model of the Elliott-Yafet type that includes the effects of the spin-orbit interaction in the ab-initio ferromagnetic band structure, the electron-phonon interaction at the level of Boltzmann scattering integrals, and dynamical changes in the temperature of the phonon bath. Using realistic parameters for the ultrashort optical pulse, the computed maximum magnetization quenching achievable with electron-phonon scattering in a fixed band structure is much smaller than …
The ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a ferromagnet are governed by the interplay between electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom. In order to obtain a microscopic understanding of ultrafast demagnetization, information on the response of all three subsystems is required. A consistent description of demagnetization and microscopic energy flow, however, is still missing. Here, we combine a femtosecond electron diffraction study of the ultrafast lattice response of nickel to laser excitation with ab initio calculations of the electron-phonon interaction and energy-conserving at…
Calculations combining first-principles electron-phonon ($e$-ph) interactions with the Boltzmann equation enable studies of ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics. However, in materials with weak Coulomb screening, electrons and holes form bound excitons and their scattering processes become correlated, posing additional challenges for modeling nonequilibrium physics. Here we show calculations of ultrafast exciton dynamics and related time-domain spectroscopies using $ab~initio$ exciton-phonon (ex-ph) interactions together with an excitonic Boltzmann equation. Starting from the nonequilibrium e…
Starting from the continuity equation for the magnetization in time-dependent spin-density functional theory, we derive an expression for the effective time-dependent magnetic fields driving the out-of-equilibrium spin dynamics in magnetic systems. We evaluate these, so called, kinetic magnetic fields in the ultrafast demagnetization response to optical pulse excitations of ferromagnetic iron-based materials, namely Fe$_6$ cluster and bulk bcc Fe. We identify spatial "hot spots" where the demagnetization is particularly enhanced as a result of the increased kinetic torque.
The atomistic resolution recently achieved by ultrafast spectroscopies demands corresponding theoretical advances. Real-time time-dependent density-functional theory (RT-TDDFT) with Ehrenfest dynamics offers an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational costs to study electronic and vibrational dynamics of laser-excited materials in the sub-picosecond regime. However, this approach is unable to account for thermal effects or zero-point energies which are crucial in the physics involved. Herein, we adopt a quantum-semiclassical method based on RT-TDDFT+Ehrenfest to simulate laser-indu…
Measuring terahertz (THz) conductivity on an ultrafast time scale is an excellent way to observe charge-carrier dynamics in semiconductors as a function of time after photoexcitation. However, a conductivity measurement alone cannot separate the effects of charge-carrier recombination from effective mass changes as charges cool and experience different regions of the electronic band structure. Here we present a form of time-resolved magneto-THz spectroscopy which allows us to measure cyclotron effective mass on a picosecond time scale. We demonstrate this technique by observing electron coolin…
Charge transfer between photoexcited quantum dots and molecular acceptors is one of the key limiting processes in most applications of colloidal nanostructures, most prominently in photovoltaics. An atomistic detailed description of this process would open new ways to optimize existing and create new structures with targeted properties. We achieve a one-to-one comparison between ab-initio non-adiabatic molecular dynamics calculations and transient absorption spectroscopy experiments, which allows us to draw a comprehensive atomistic picture of the charge transfer process, following the time ev…
Time resolved measurements of the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation reveal that, in the {\it 3d} ferromagnets Fe, Co and Ni, the amplitude of the demagnetization increases linearly with the fluence of the light. We rationalize this phenomenon as being linearly driven by the increase in temperature, the electron-phonon and electron-magnon scattering, and a reduction of the inter-atomic exchange. The amplitude of the latter phenomenon, which until the present study has been widely overlooked, is obtained through \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations, and is argued to be th…
We describe a theoretical approach for spin-polarized hot-electron transport, as it occurs after excitation by ultrafast optical pulses in heterostructures formed by ferromagnetic and normal metals. We formulate a spin-dependent particle-in-cell model that solves the Boltzmann equation for excited electrons. It includes lifetimes and transmission coefficients as parameters, which can be taken from ab-initio calculations or experiment, and can be easily extended to multilayer systems. This approach is capable of describing electron transport in the ballistic, super-diffusive and diffusive regim…
Femtosecond laser excitation of solid-state systems creates non-equilibrium hot electrons that cool down by transferring their energy to other degrees of freedom and ultimately to lattice vibrations of the solid. By combining ab initio calculations with ultrafast diffuse electron scattering we gain a detailed understanding of the complex non-equilibrium energy transfer between electrons and phonons in laser-excited Ni metal. Our experimental results show that the wavevector resolved population dynamics of phonon modes is distinctly different throughout the Brillouin zone and are in remarkable …
CO oxidation on Ru(0001) is a long-standing example of a reaction that, being thermally forbidden in ultra-high vacuum, can be activated by femtosecond laser pulses. In spite of its relevance, the precise dynamics of the photo-induced oxidation process as well as the reasons behind the dominant role of the competing CO photo-desorption remain unclear. Here we use ab initio molecular dynamics with electronic friction that account for the highly excited and non-equilibrated system created by the laser to investigate both reactions. Our simulations successfully reproduce the main experimental fin…
At the ultrafast limit of optical spin manipulation is the theoretically predicted phenomena of optical intersite spin transfer (OISTR), in which laser induced charge transfer between the sites of a multi-component material leads to control over magnetic order. A key prediction of this theory is that the demagnetization efficiency is determined by the availability of unoccupied states for intersite charge transfer. Employing state-of-the-art magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements with femtosecond time resolution, we probe this prediction via a systematic comparison of the ultrafast magnetic …
We monitor the dynamics of hot carriers in InSe by means of two photons photoelectron spectroscopy (2PPE). The electrons excited by photons of 3.12 eV experience a manifold relaxation. First, they thermalize to the electronic states degenerate with the $\bar M$ valley. Subsequently, the electronic cooling is dictated by Fröhlich coupling with phonons of small momentum transfer. Ab-initio calculations predict cooling rates that are in good agreement with the observed dynamics. We argue that electrons accumulating in states degenerate with the $\bar M$ valley could travel through a multilayer fl…
This manuscript presents, to our knowledge, the first fully ab initio many-body photoemission framework to predict the transverse momentum distributions and the mean transverse energies (MTEs) of photoelectrons from single-crystal photocathodes. The need to develop such a theory stems from the lack of studies that provide complete understanding of the underlying fundamental processes governing the transverse momentum distribution of photoelectrons emitted from single crystals. For example, initial predictions based on density-functional theory calculations of effective electron masses suggeste…
VO$_{2}$ is a model material system which exhibits a metal to insulator transition at 67$^\circ$C. This holds potential for future ultrafast switching in memory devices, but typically requires a purely electronic process to avoid the slow lattice response. The role of lattice vibrations is thus important, but it is not well understood and it has been a long-standing source of controversy. We use a combination of ultrafast spectroscopy and ab initio quantum calculations to unveil the mechanism responsible for the transition. We identify an atypical Peierls vibrational mode which acts as a trigg…
Ultrafast Nonthermal Lattice Destabilization and Suppression of Polar Optical Scattering in Electronically Excited $α$-SiO$_2$ from First-Principles and Deep Neural Network Potential Modeling
The ultra-fast demagnetization of small iron clusters initiated by an intense optical excitation is studied with time-dependent spin density functional theory (TDSDFT). In particular we investigate the effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the onset of the demagnetization process. It is found that the initial rate of coherent spin loss is proportional to the square of the atomic spin-orbit coupling constant, $λ$. A simplified quantum spin model comprising spin-orbit interaction and a local time-dependent magnetic field is found to be the minimal model able to reproduce our {\it ab initio} re…
Hybrid interfaces formed by inorganic semiconductors and organic molecules are intriguing materials for opto-electronics. Interfacial charge transfer is primarily responsible for their peculiar electronic structure and optical response. Hence, it is essential to gain insight into this fundamental process also beyond the static picture. Ab initio methods based on real-time time-dependent density-functional theory coupled to the Ehrenfest molecular dynamics scheme are ideally suited for this problem. We investigate a laser-excited hybrid inorganic/organic interface formed by the electron accepto…
Exciton-phonon coupling induces new pathway for ultrafast intralayer-to-interlayer exciton transition and interlayer charge transfer in WS2-MoS2 heterostructure: a first-principles study
An SDW antiferromagnetic (SDW-AF) low temperature phase transition is generally observe and the AF spin fluctuations are considered to play an important role for the superconductivity paring mechanism in FeAs superconductors. However, a similar magnetic phase transition is not observed in FeSe superconductors, which has caused considerable discussion. We report on the intrinsic electronic states of FeSe as elucidated by transport measurements under magnetic fields using a high quality single crystal. A mobility spectrum analysis, an ab initio method that does not make assumptions on the transp…
