The aim of this paper is to develop an approach to obtain self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators acting on anti-dual pairs. The main advantage of such a result is that it can be applied for structures not carrying a Hilbert space structure or a normable topology. In fact, we will show how hermitian extensions of linear functionals of involutive algebras can be governed by means of their induced operators. As an operator theoretic application, we provide a direct generalization of Parrott's theorem on contractive completion of $2$ by $2$ block operator-valued matrices. To exhibit the applicability in noncommutative integration, we characterize hermitian extendibility of symmetric functionals defined on a left ideal of a $C^{*}$-algebra.
In this article, the self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators satisfying anti-commutation relations are considered. It is proven that an anti-commutative type of the Glimm-Jaffe-Nelson commutator theorem follows. Its application to an abstract Dirac operator is also considered.
In this paper we consider the order-like relation for self-adjoint operators on some Hilbert space. This relation is defined by using Jensen inequality. We will show that under some assumptions this relation is antisymmetric.
Under the assumption that $V \in L^2([0,π]; dx)$, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for (non-self-adjoint) Schrödinger operators $-d^2/dx^2+V$ in $L^2([0,π]; dx)$ with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions to possess a Riesz basis of root vectors (i.e., eigenvectors and generalized eigenvectors spanning the range of the Riesz projection associated with the corresponding periodic and antiperiodic eigenvalues). We also discuss the case of a Schauder basis for periodic and antiperiodic Schrödinger operators $-d^2/dx^2+V$ in $L^p([0,π]; dx)$, $p \in (1,\infty)$.
This is a continuation of our previous paper. We consider a certain order-like relation for positive operators on a Hilbert space. This relation is defined by using the Jensen inequality with respect to the square-root function. We show that this relation is antisymmetric if the operators are invertible.
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of finite rank self-adjoint operators on $H$ with respect to the action of unitary operators. We suppose that ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of rank $k$ and for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$ the dimensions of distinct maximal eigenspaces are distinct. Under the assumption that $\dim H\ge 4k$ we establish that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal C}$ preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator, i.e. there is a unitary or anti-unitary operator $U$ suc…
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space of dimension not less than $3$ and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of compact self-adjoint operators on $H$. Suppose that the dimension of the kernels of operators from ${\mathcal C}$ not less than the dimension of their ranges. In the case when ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of finite rank $k$ and $\dim H=2k$, we assume that $k\ge 4$. We show that every bijective transformation of C preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator up to a permutation of eigenspaces of the same dimension.
In this work we introduce a new measure for the dispersion of the spectral scale of a Hermitian (self-adjoint) operator acting on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space that we call spectral spread. Then, we obtain some submajorization inequalities involving the spectral spread of self-adjoint operators, that are related to Tao's inequalities for anti-diagonal blocks of positive operators, Kittaneh's commutator inequalities for positive operators and also related to the Arithmetic-Geometric mean inequality. In turn, these submajorization relations imply inequalities for unitarily invar…
We consider a large class of self-adjoint elliptic problem associated with the second derivative acting on a space of vector-valued functions. We present two different approaches to the study of the associated eigenvalues problems. The first, more general one allows to replace a secular equation (which is well-known in some special cases) by an abstract rank condition. The latter seems to apply particularly well to a specific boundary condition, sometimes dubbed "anti-Kirchhoff" in the literature, that arise in the theory of differential operators on graphs; it also permits to discuss interest…
Unlike in complex linear operator theory, polynomials or, more generally, Laurent series in antilinear operators cannot be modelled with complex analysis. There exists a corresponding function space, though, surfacing in spectral mapping theorems. These spectral mapping theorems are inclusive in general. Equality can be established in the self-adjoint case. The arising functions are shown to possess a biradial character. It is shown that to any given set of Jacobi parameters corresponds a biradial measure yielding these parameters in an iterative orthogonalization process in this function spac…
Given a self-adjoint involution J on a Hilbert space H, we consider a J-self-adjoint operator L=A+V on H where A is a possibly unbounded self-adjoint operator commuting with J and V a bounded J-self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with J. We establish optimal estimates on the position of the spectrum of L with respect to the spectrum of A and we obtain norm bounds on the operator angles between maximal uniformly definite reducing subspaces of the unperturbed operator A and the perturbed operator L. All the bounds are given in terms of the norm of V and the distances between pairs of disjoint s…
Let $J$ and $R$ be anti-commuting fundamental symmetries in a Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}$. The operators $J$ and $R$ can be interpreted as basis (generating) elements of the complex Clifford algebra ${\mathcal C}l_2(J,R):={span}\{I, J, R, iJR\}$. An arbitrary non-trivial fundamental symmetry from ${\mathcal C}l_2(J,R)$ is determined by the formula $J_{\vecα}=α_{1}J+α_{2}R+α_{3}iJR$, where ${\vecα}\in\mathbb{S}^2$. Let $S$ be a symmetric operator that commutes with ${\mathcal C}l_2(J,R)$. The purpose of this paper is to study the sets $Σ_{J_{\vecα}}$ ($\forall{\vecα}\in\mathbb{S}^2$) of self-a…
Let H be a separable Hilbert space, and D(B(H))^ah the anti-Hermitian bounded diagonals in some fixed orthonormal basis and K(H) the compact operators. We study the group of unitary operators U_kd = {u in U(H): such that u-e^D in K(H) for D in D(B(H))^ah} in order to obtain a concrete description of short curves in unitary Fredholm orbits Ob={ e^K b e^{-K} : K in K(H)^ah } of a compact self-adjoint operator b with spectral multiplicity one. We consider the rectifiable distance on Ob defined as the infimum of curve lengths measured with the Finsler metric defined by means of the quotient space …
In this work a possibility of a decomposition of a bounded operator which acts in a Hilbert space $H$ as a product of a J-unitary and a J-self-adjoint operators is studied, $J$ is a conjugation (an antilinear involution). Decompositions of J-unitary and unitary operators which are analogous to decompositions in the finite-dimensional case are obtained. A possibility of a matrix representation for J-symmetric, J-skew-symmetric operators is studied. Also, some simple properties of J-symmetric, J-antisymmetric, J-isometric operators are obtained, a structure of a null set for a J-form is studied.
We consider operators of the type $D^α:H^2(\mathcal{H})\to H^2(\mathcal{H})$, where $D^α$ denotes a fractional differentiation operator, and $Γ_ϕ$ is a Hankel operator. For $α>0$, we characterize boundedness in terms of a natural anti-analytic Carleson embedding condition. We obtain three notable corollaries. The first is that our main result does not extend to $α=0$, i.e. Nehari-Page BMOA is not characterized by the natural anti-analytic Carleson embedding condition. The second is that when we add an adjoint embedding condition, we obtain a sufficient but not necessary condition for boundedne…
We introduce a notion of weak anticommutativity for a pair (S,T) of self-adjoint regular operators in a Hilbert-C*-module E. We prove that the sum $S+T$ of such pairs is self-adjoint and regular on the intersection of their domains. A similar result then holds for the sum S^2+T^2 of the squares. We show that our definition is closely related to the Connes-Skandalis positivity criterion in $KK$-theory. As such we weaken a sufficient condition of Kucerovsky for representing the Kasparov product. Our proofs indicate that our conditions are close to optimal.
