Multiple gauge theories predict the presence of cosmic strings with different mass densities $Gμ/c^2$. We derive an equation governing the perturbations of a rotating black hole pierced by a straight, infinitely long cosmic string along its axis of rotation and calculate the quasinormal-mode frequencies of such a black hole. We then carry out parameter estimation on the first detected gravitational-wave event, GW150914, by hypothesizing that there is a string piercing through the remnant, yielding a constraint of $Gμ/c^2 <3.8\times 10^{-3}$ at the 90\% confidence interval with a comparable Bayes factor with an analysis for a Kerr black hole without a string. In contrast to existing studies which focus on the mutual intersection of cosmic strings, or the cosmic string network, our work focuses on the intersection of a cosmic string with a black hole, with characteristics which can be identified in binary coalescence signals.
A rotating black hole threaded by an infinitely long cosmic string is studied in the framework of the Abelian Higgs model. We show that contrary to a common belief, in the presence of rotation the backreaction of the string does not induce a simple conical deficit. This leads to new distinct features of the Kerr--string system such as modified ISCO or shifted ergosphere, though these effects are likely outside the range of observational precision. For an extremal rotating black hole, the system exhibits a first-order phase transition for the gravitational Meissner effect: whereas the horizon o…
In this work, we calculate the quantum correction effects on the deflection of light in the spacetime geometry of a quantum improved Kerr black hole pierced by an infinitely long cosmic string. More precisely, we calculate the deflection angle by applying the Gauss--Bonnet theorem (GBT) to the osculating optical geometries related to the quantum improved rotating black hole in the weak limit approximation. We find that the deflection angle of light is affected by the quantum effects as well as the global topology due to the presence of the cosmic string. Besides, we have managed to find the sa…
We develop a waveform model to describe the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary systems with comparable and intermediate mass-ratios. This model incorporates first-order conservative self-force corrections to the energy and angular momentum, which are valid in the strong-field regime [1]. We model the radiative part of the self-force by deriving second-order radiative corrections to the energy flux. These corrections are obtained by minimizing the phase discrepancy between our self-force model and the effective one body model [2, 3] for a variety of mass-ratios. We show that our model perf…
We study the emission of scalar fields into the bulk from a six-dimensional rotating black hole pierced by a 3-brane. We determine the angular eigenvalues in the presence of finite brane tension by using the continued fraction method. The radial equation is integrated numerically, giving the absorption probability (graybody factor) in a wider frequency range than in the preexisting literature. We then compute the power and angular momentum emission spectra for different values of the rotation parameter and brane tension, and compare their relative behavior in detail. As is expected from the ea…
An explicit example is found showing how a modified theory of gravity can be constrained with the ringdown signals from merger of binary black holes. This has been made possible by the fact that the modified gravitational theory considered in this work has an exact rotating black hole solution and that the corresponding quasi-normal modes can be calculated. With these, we obtain the possible constraint that can be placed on the parameter describing the deviation of this particular alternative theory from general relativity by using the detection of the ringdown signals from binary black holes'…
The ongoing observations of merging black holes by the instruments of the fledging gravitational wave astronomy has opened the way for testing the general relativistic Kerr black hole metric and, at the same time, for probing the existence of more speculative horizonless ultracompact objects. In this paper we quantify the difference that these two classes of objects may exhibit in the post-merger ringdown signal. By considering rotating systems in general relativity and assuming an eikonal limit and a third-order Hartle-Thorne slow rotation approximation, we provide the first calculation of th…
A black hole image contains a bright ring of photons that have closely circled the black hole on their way from the source to the detector. Here, we study the photon ring of a rotating black hole which is pierced by a global hyper-light axion-type cosmic string. We show that the coupling $ϕF \tilde{F}$ between the axion $ϕ$ and the photon can give rise to a unique polarimetric structure of the photon ring. The structure emerges due to an Aharonov-Bohm type effect that leads to a change of the polarization directions of linear polarized photons when they circle the black hole. For several param…
We present a new vacuum solution of Einstein's equations describing the near horizon region of two neutral, extreme (zero-temperature), co-rotating, non-identical Kerr black holes. The metric is stationary, asymptotically near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK), and contains a localized massless strut along the symmetry axis between the black holes. In the deep infrared, it flows to two separate throats which we call "pierced-NHEK" geometries: each throat is NHEK pierced by a conical singularity. We find that in spite of the presence of the strut for the pierced-NHEK geometries the isometry group SL…
The interferometric LIGO detectors have recently measured the first direct gravitational-wave signal from what has been interpreted as the inspiral, merger and ringdown of a binary system of black holes. The signal-to-noise ratio of the measured signal is large enough to leave little doubt that it does refer to the inspiral of two massive and ultracompact objects, whose merger yields a rotating black hole. Yet, the quality of the data is such that some room is left for alternative interpretations that do not involve black holes, but other objects that, within classical general relativity, can …
We provide semi-analytic expressions for quasinormal mode frequencies of slowly rotating Kerr black holes to the quadratic order in the rotation parameter. We apply the parametrized black hole quasinormal mode ringdown formalism to the Chandrasekhar-Detweiler equation and the Sasaki-Nakamura equation instead of the Teukolsky equation, and compare our result with the previous numerical calculations.
One class of competitive candidates for dark matter is ultralight bosons. If they exist, these bosons may form long-lived bosonic clouds surrounding rotating black holes via superradiant instabilities, acting as sources of gravity and affecting the propagation of gravitational waves around the host black hole. During extreme-mass-ratio inspirals, the bosonic clouds will survive the inspiral phase and can affect the quasinormal-mode frequencies of the perturbed black-hole-bosonic-cloud system. In this work, we compute the shifts of gravitational quasinormal-mode frequencies of a rotating black …
The detection of gravitational waves from compact binary mergers by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration has, for the first time, allowed us to test relativistic gravity in its strong, dynamical and nonlinear regime, thus opening a new arena to confront general relativity (and modifications thereof) against observations. We consider a theory which modifies general relativity by introducing a scalar field coupled to a parity-violating curvature term known as dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. In this theory, spinning black holes are different from their general relativistic counterparts and can thus serve…
Recently it has been argued that near-horizon modifications of the standard (classical) black hole spacetime could lead to observable alterations of the gravitational waveform generated by a binary black hole coalescence. Such modifications can be inspired by quantum gravity considerations, resulting in speculative horizonless exotic compact objects (ECOs) with no singularities, which may be an alternative to the classical black hole solution. A largely model-independent description of these objects proposed in the literature relies on the introduction of a partially reflective wall at some sm…

Quasinormal modes are a set of damped resonances that describe how an excited open system is driven back to equilibrium. In gravitational physics these modes characterise the ringdown of a perturbed black hole, e.g. following a binary black hole merger. A careful analysis of the ringdown spectrum reveals the properties of the black hole, such as its angular momentum and mass. In more complex gravitational systems the spectrum might depend on more parameters, and hence allows us to search for new physics. In this letter we present a hydrodynamic analogue of a rotating black hole, that illustrat…

In this paper, we explore the signatures of non-rotating and rotating black hole mergers in the matter-free modified gravity. First, we solve the unstable circular null orbits and the innermost stable circular timelike orbits via the geodesic motion. The characteristic quantities of these orbits are systematically analyzed by varying the black hole spin and the scalar field parameter of the gravity. Then based on it, we study the ringdown modes from the light ring/quasinormal modes correspondence. The final spins of the merged black holes are also estimated with the Buonanno-Kidder-Lehner reci…
One of the most promising strategies to test gravity in the strong-field, large curvature regime is gravitational spectroscopy: the measurement of black hole quasi-normal modes from the ringdown signal emitted in the aftermath of a compact binary coalescence, searching for deviations from the predictions of general relativity. This strategy is only effective if we know how quasi-normal modes of black holes are affected by modifications of general relativity; and if we know this for rotating black holes, since binary coalescences typically lead to black holes with spins $J/M^2\sim 0.7$. In this…
Spectroscopy is a fundamental tool in science which consists in studying the response of a system as a function of frequency. Among its many applications in Physics, Biology, Chemistry and other fields, the possibility of identifying objects and structures through their emission spectra is remarkable and incredibly useful. In this paper we apply the spectroscopy idea to a numerically simulated hydrodynamical flow, with the goal of developing a new, non-invasive flow measurement technique. Our focus lies on an irrotational draining vortex, which can be seen, under specific conditions, as the an…
In order to perform model-dependent tests of general relativity with gravitational wave observations, we must have access to numerical relativity binary black hole waveforms in theories beyond general relativity (GR). In this study, we focus on order-reduced Einstein dilaton Gauss-Bonnet gravity (EDGB), a higher curvature beyond-GR theory with motivations in string theory. The stability of single, rotating black holes in EDGB is unknown, but is a necessary condition for being able to simulate binary black hole systems (especially the early-inspiral and late ringdown stages) in EDGB. We thus in…

We conduct a descriptive analysis of the multipolar structure of gravitational-radiation waveforms from equal-mass aligned-spin mergers, following an approach first presented in the complementary context of nonspinning black holes of varying mass ratio [J.G. Baker et al. Phys. Rev. D 78 044046 (2008)]. We find that, as with the nonspinning mergers, the dominant waveform mode phases evolve together in lock-step through inspiral and merger, supporting the previous waveform description in terms of an adiabatically rigid rotator driving gravitational-wave emission-an implicit rotating source. We f…
Gravitational spectroscopy - the measurement of the quasi-normal modes of a black hole from the ringdown signal of a binary black hole coalescence - is one of the most promising tools to test gravity in the strong-field, large-curvature regime, but without the knowledge of the black hole quasi-normal modes in specific cases of modified gravity theories, only null tests of general relativity are possible. More specifically, we need to know the modes of rotating black holes, because typical compact binary mergers lead to black holes with large spins. In this article we compute, for the first tim…

In the context of higher dimensional braneworld scenario, we have argued that the occurrence of horizonless exotic compact objects, as an alternative to classical black holes, are more natural. These exotic compact objects carry a distinctive signature of the higher dimension, namely a tidal charge parameter, inherited from the projection of the higher dimensional Weyl tensor onto the four dimensional spacetime we live in. Due to the absence of any horizon, rotating exotic compact objects are often unstable because of superradiance. Interestingly, these higher dimensional exotic compact object…
We present a detailed descriptive analysis of the gravitational radiation from black-hole binary mergers of nonspinning black holes, based on numerical simulations of systems varying from equal-mass to a 6:1 mass ratio. Our primary goal is to present relatively complete information about the waveforms, including all the leading multipolar components, to interested researchers. In our analysis, we pursue the simplest physical description of the dominant features in the radiation, providing an interpretation of the waveforms in terms of an {\em implicit rotating source}. This interpretation appl…
We have investigated several properties of rapidly rotating dynamic black holes generated by gravitational collapse of rotating relativistic stars. At present, numerical simulations of the binary black hole merger are able to produce a Kerr black hole of J_final / M_final^2 up to = 0.91, of gravitational collapse from uniformly rotating stars up to J_final / M_final^2 ~ 0.75, where J_final is the total angular momentum and M_final the total gravitational mass of the hole. We have succeeded in producing a dynamic black hole of spin J_final / M_final^2 ~ 0.95 through the collapse of differential…
The notion of non-equatorial spherical photon orbits is among the very special properties of the Kerr spacetime of rotating black holes and is one that leaves a clear mark on the electromagnetic and gravitational wave signature of these objects. In principle, one could use observations like the shadow a black hole casts when is externally illuminated or the gravitational quasi-normal mode ringdown of merging black holes in order to identify the Kerr metric via its light-ring and spherical photon orbit structure, or perhaps look for the presence of more exotic non-Kerr ultracompact objects. Thi…
Modelling of gravitational waves from binary black hole inspiral has played an important role in the recent observations of such signals. The late-stage ringdown phase of the gravitational waveform is often associated with the null particle orbit ("light ring") of the black hole spacetime. With simple models we show that this link between the light ring and spacetime ringing is based more on the history of specific models than on an actual constraining relationship. We also show, in particular, that a better understanding of the dissociation of the two may be relevant to the astrophysically in…
Motivated by the desire to understand the leading order nonlinear gravitational wave interactions around arbitrarily rapidly rotating Kerr black holes, we describe a numerical code designed to compute second order vacuum perturbations on such spacetimes. A general discussion of the formalism we use is presented in (arXiv:2008.11770); here we show how we numerically implement that formalism with a particular choice of coordinates and tetrad conditions, and give example results for black holes with dimensionless spin parameters $a=0.7$ and $a=0.998$. We first solve the Teukolsky equation for the…
Quasi-normal mode frequencies and gravitational perturbations of black holes with any subextremal spin in modified gravity through METRICS: the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity case
Spectacular breakthroughs in numerical relativity now make it possible to compute spacetime dynamics in almost complete generality, allowing us to model the coalescence and merger of binary black holes with essentially no approximations. The primary limitation of these calculations is now computational. In particular, it is difficult to model systems with large mass ratio and large spins, since one must accurately resolve the multiple lengthscales which play a role in such systems. Perturbation theory can play an important role in extending the reach of computational modeling for binary system…
Distorted black holes radiate gravitational waves. In the so-called ringdown phase radiation is emitted in a discrete set of complex quasinormal frequencies, whose values depend only on the black hole's mass and angular momentum. Ringdown radiation could be detectable with large signal-to-noise ratio by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna LISA. If more than one mode is detected, tests of the black hole nature of the source become possible. The detectability of different modes depends on their relative excitation, which in turn depends on the cause of the perturbation (i.e. on the initial da…
Astrophysical tests of general relativity belong to two categories: 1) "internal", i.e. consistency tests within the theory (for example, tests that astrophysical black holes are indeed described by the Kerr solution and its perturbations), or 2) "external", i.e. tests of the many proposed extensions of the theory. I review some ways in which astrophysical black holes can be used as natural laboratories for both "internal" and "external" tests of general relativity. The examples provided here (ringdown tests of the black hole "no-hair" theorem, bosonic superradiant instabilities in rotating bl…
We discuss properties of black holes which are pierced by special configurations of cosmic strings. For static black holes we consider radial strings in the limit when the number of strings grows to infinity while the tension of each single string tends to zero. In a properly taken limit the stress-energy tensor of the string distribution is finite. We call such matter stringy matter. We present a solution of the Einstein equations for an electrically charged static black hole with the stringy matter, with and without cosmological constant. This solution is a warped product of two metrics. One…
Black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes have been the subject of intense scrutiny, including detailed frequency-domain analysis and full nonlinear evolutions. Remarkably, studies of linearized perturbations in the time-domain are scarce or non-existing. We close this gap by evolving linearized scalar wavepackets in the background of rotating BHs in AdS spacetimes. Our results show a number of interesting features. Small BHs in AdS behave as asymptotically flat BHs for early/intermediate times, displaying the same ringdown modes and power-law tails. As the field bounces ba…
Binary neutron-star (BNS) systems represent primary sources for the gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. We present a systematic investigation in full GR of the dynamics and GW emission from BNS which inspiral and merge, producing a black hole (BH) surrounded by a torus. Our results represent the state of the art from several points of view: (i) We use HRSC methods for the hydrodynamics equations and high-order finite-differencing techniques for the Einstein equations; (ii) We employ AMR techniques with "moving boxes"; (iii) We use as initial data BNSs in irrotational quasi-circular orbits; (iv)…
Structure at the horizon scale of black holes would give rise to echoes of the gravitational wave signal associated with the post-merger ringdown phase in binary coalescences. We study the waveform of echoes in static and stationary, traversable wormholes in which perturbations are governed by a symmetric effective potential. We argue that echoes are dominated by the wormhole quasinormal frequency nearest to the fundamental black hole frequency that controls the primary signal. We put forward an accurate method to construct the echoes waveform(s) from the primary signal and the quasinormal fre…
