For a not-necessarily commutative ring R we define an abelian group W(R;M) of Witt vectors with coefficients in an R-bimodule M. These groups generalize the usual big Witt vectors of commutative rings and we prove that they have analogous formal properties and structure. One main result is that W(R) := W(R;R) is Morita invariant in R.
For an R-linear endomorphism f of a finitely generated projective R-module we define a characteristic element $χ_f \in W(R)$. This element is a non-commutative analogue of the classical characteristic polynomial and we show that it has similar properties. The assignment $f \mapsto χ_f$ induces an isomorphism between a suitable completion of cyclic K-theory and W(R).
In this paper we develop a novel approach to Witt vector rings and to the (relative) de Rham Witt complex. We do this in the generality of arbitrary commutative algebras and arbitrary truncation sets. In our construction of Witt vector rings the ring structure is obvious and there is no need for universal polynomials. Moreover a natural generalization of the construction easily leads to the relative de Rham Witt complex. Our approach is based on the use of free or at least torsion free presentations of a given commutative ring $R$ and it is an important fact that the resulting objects are inde…
Fix an odd prime $p$. The results in this paper are modeled after work of Hesselholt and Hesselholt-Madsen on the $p$-typical absolute de Rham-Witt complex in mixed characteristic. We have two primary results. The first is an exact sequence which describes the kernel of the restriction map on the de Rham-Witt complex over $A$, where $A$ is the ring of integers in an algebraic extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, or where $A$ is a $p$-torsion-free perfectoid ring. The second result is a description of the $p$-power torsion (and related objects) in the de Rham-Witt complex over $A$, where $A$ is a $p$-t…
In arxiv:1602.04254, we have defined polynomial Witt vectors functor from vector spaces over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ to abelian groups. In this paper, we use polynomial Witt vectors to construct a functorial Hochschild-Witt complex $WCH_*(A)$ for any associative unital $k$-algebra $A$, with homology groups $WHH_*(A)$. We prove that the group $WHH_0(A)$ coincides with the group of non-commutative Witt vectors defined by Hesselholt, while if $A$ is commutative, finitely generated, and smooth, the groups $WHH_i(A)$ are naturally identified with the terms $WΩ^i_A$ of the…
Let $R$ be a commutative local ring. We provide an explicit presentation of the symmetric Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}^{\mathrm{s}}(R)$ of $R$ as an abelian group when $R$ has residue field $\mathbb{F}_2$. This completes a recent work by Rogers and Schlichting, where an explicit presentation of $\mathrm{GW}^{\mathrm{s}}(R)$ is given when the residue field is different from $\mathbb{F}_2$. We then use this result to compute the symmetric Grothendieck-Witt rings for the sequences of local rings $\mathbb{Z}/2^n\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{F}_2[x]/(x^n)$.
In this paper we introduce the 2-typical de Rham-Witt complex for arbitrary commutative, unital rings and log-rings. We describe this complex for the rings \Z and \Z_{(2)}, for the log-ring (\Z_{(2)},M) with the canonical log-structure, and we describe its behaviour under polynomial extensions. In an appendix we also describe the $p$-typical de Rham-Witt complex of (\Z_{(p)},M) for p odd.
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of split quadrics over a field of characteristic not two. We even determine the full bigraded I-cohomology and Milnor-Witt cohomology rings, including twists by line bundles. The results on I-cohomology corroborate the general philosophy that I-cohomology is an algebro-geometric version of singular cohomology of real varieties: our explicit calculations confirm that the I-cohomology ring of a split quadric over the reals is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring of the space of its real points.
We introduce Milnor-Witt $K$-groups of local rings and show that the $n$th Milnor-Witt $K$-group of a local ring $R$ which contains an infinite field of characteristic not $2$ is the pull-back of the $n$th power of the fundamental ideal in the Witt ring of $R$ and the $n$th Milnor $K$-group of $R$ over the $n$th Milnor $K$-group of $R$ modulo $2$. This generalizes the work of Morel-Hopkins on Milnor-Witt $K$-groups of fields.
We prove some results connecting the zeta functions of varieties over finite fields with the big Witt ring over $\mathbb Z$. We explore relations with motivic measures and a classical formula of Macdonald on invariants of symmetric products of a variety.

We extend the big and $p$-typical Witt vector functors from commutative rings to commutative semirings. In the case of the big Witt vectors, this is a repackaging of some standard facts about monomial and Schur positivity in the combinatorics of symmetric functions. In the $p$-typical case, it uses positivity with respect to an apparently new basis of the $p$-typical symmetric functions. We also give explicit descriptions of the big Witt vectors of the natural numbers and of the nonnegative reals, the second of which is a restatement of Edrei's theorem on totally positive power series. Finally…
This article deals mostly with the following question: when is the classical ring of quotients of a commutative ring a ring of stable range 1? We introduce the concepts of a ring of (von Neumann) regular range 1, a ring of semihereditary range 1, a ring of regular range 1, a semihereditary local ring, a regular local ring. We find relationships between the introduced classes of rings and known ones, in particular, it is established that a commutative indecomposable almost clean ring is a regular local ring. A commutative any ring of idempotent regular range 1 is an almost clean ring. It is sho…
The K-ring of symmetric vector bundles over a scheme X, the so-called Grothendieck-Witt ring of X, can be endowed with the structure of a (special) $λ$-ring. The associated $γ$-filtration generalizes the fundamental filtration on the (Grothendieck-)Witt ring of a field and is closely related to the "classical" filtration by the kernels of the first two Stiefel-Whitney classes.
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of the classifying spaces for the symplectic and special linear groups. In the structural description we give, contributions from real and complex realization are clearly visible. In particular, the computation of cohomology with $\mathbf{I}^j$-coefficients is done closely along the lines of Brown's computation of integral cohomology for special orthogonal groups. The computations for the symplectic groups show that Chow-Witt groups are a symplectically oriented ring cohomology theory. Using our computations for special linear groups, we also discuss the question…
We establish new structures on Grothendieck-Witt rings, including a GW(k)-module structure on the unit group GW(k)^x and a presentation of \ul{GW}^x as an infinite Gm-loop sheaf. Even though our constructions are motivated by speculations in stable A1-homotopy theory, our arguments are purely algebraic.
We build a ring spectrum representing Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology, as well as its étale local version and show how to deduce out of it three other theories: Borel-Moore homology, cohomology with compact support and homology. These theories, as well as the usual cohomology, are defined for singular schemes and satisfy the properties of their motivic analog (and more), up to considering more general twists. In fact, the whole formalism of these four theories can be functorially attached to any ring spectrum, giving finally maps between the Milnor-Witt motivic ones to the classical motivic one…
The purpose of this article is to prove that Gersten's conjecture for a commutative discrete valuation ring is true. Combining with the result of \cite{GL87}, we learn that Gersten's conjecture is true if the ring is a commutative regular local, smooth over a commutative discrete valuation ring.
We give a Matsumoto-type presentation of $K_2$-groups over rings of non-commutative Laurent polynomials, which is a non-commutative version of M. Tomie's result for loop groups. Our main idea is due to U. Rehmann's approach in case of division rings.
We prove that the hermitian Gersten-Witt complex is exact for Azumaya algebras with involution of the first- or second kind over a regular local ring, which is essentially smooth over a field, or over a discrete valuation ring.
